Came here for the lunch special. I got a yellow chicken curry with rice and a thai tea for $17.95 before tax and tip! The drink only comes with the special if you dine in. I ordered my curry hot and was pleasantly surprised that it actually had a good kick and made me sweat. Most places I go to don't ever make it spicy enough. The curry was really flavorful and the portion size could easily feed two! Like massive. Definitely not enough rice compared to curry. The thai tea was really refreshing and the perfect drink for my meal. Appreciated that it wasn't overly sweet. There was one server holding it down when I came during Monday around noon. There was about 5 parties including myself and she was very efficient. I was able to dine in and get out of there within 30 minutes. The place is very casual. read more

The moment we sat down and looked at the menu, we probably should have left. The restaurant was uncomfortably warm, and even the bathroom felt like a sauna. Unfortunately, the food didn't improve the experience. The papaya salad was served warm, which made it much less appetizing, and even the drinking water was served at room temperature despite how hot the restaurant was. We had to ask if the Thai boat noodles were available, which in hindsight should have been a sign to skip them--they ended up being the worst dish we ordered. The khao soi was probably the only dish that stood out in a positive way. The fried fish was decent, but I wish the sauce had been served on the side because it overpowered the fish instead of complementing it. The crispy pork was also just okay--nothing memorable. The service was fine, but it's surprising that the staff doesn't seem to recognize how uncomfortable the temperature is inside the restaurant. At the very least, guests should be served ice-cold water to help offset the heat. Overall, we won't be returning. It doesn't hit the spot and may appeal more to diners who are less familiar with traditional Thai cuisine and its flavor profile. read more

I completely agree with the other reviewers--the service here is genuinely exceptional. From the moment we sat down, everything felt attentive and well-coordinated. Three different servers came by to help with our meal: one took our order, another offered suggestions on what to choose, someone checked on us during the course of our visit, and another brought out the water jar. It was one of those experiences where you never feel like you're waiting for anything, and the whole process is just seamless. The food is just as impressive. Everything tastes fresh and comes out delicious, from start to finish. We especially enjoyed the basil fried rice and the ka-praw, and we've also tried a variety of the curries--everything we ordered was on point and full of flavor. Warning: their fresh chili is da bomb! I also really like the ambience. It's the kind of place that feels comfortable and welcoming, and it's become our go-to Thai restaurant whenever we're craving Asian food. Everything tasted just okay, very mediocre overall. The Pad See Ew had a weird bitter aftertaste that made it hard to enjoy. The Pad Thai was also disappointing; the noodles were clumped together and lacked flavor. We didn't finish either dishes. For the price, I expected much better quality and taste. Small restaurant and you can hear conversations from the other side of the room. I enjoyed the shrimp tom kha soup. It had a slightly spicy kick to it. The roti came with dipping sauce and diced cucumber (slightly pickled). Beef pad see ew came with eggs, where most of the salt/flavor was seeped into, and the beef was a bit dry for my liking. Delicious Thai food with a comfortable and dog friendly outdoor patio! We went on a Saturday afternoon and there was no line. We ordered the roti, crispy pork belly, sausage, Laos style papaya salad, and a khao soi to share between 3 people. All of the food was absolutely delicious but we felt like the portions were a little small for the price. The pork belly and sausage were both ~ $23 and didn't come with as many pieces as we thought it would. This was some of the crispiest roti I've ever had! I loved the curry dipping sauce on the side and the nice crunch of the cucumbers. The pork belly was slightly overcooked, a little hard but the flavors were great! The sausage tasted house made, it had a great tang to it and I loved the variety of dipping sauce. We ordered extra spicy/hot for the Laos papaya salad but it was definitely medium. First time at Khoisan Thai with a party of 3 and was pretty disappointed. The service started off bad, waiting for water for about 10 minutes and having to ask for it. Orders were taken pretty quickly but the food came out slowly. Friend got his dish first and we had to wait for our mama noodles. My friend and I wanted to grab something with lots of veggies after walking for the afternoon. We decided to try a new place and picked Khaosan Thai after looking through Yelp. The menu had a variety of items/dishes that looked promising, but we stuck with what we're familiar with since that's what we were craving. The restaurant was relatively empty - only one other group - when we got there around 6 on a weeknight. However, it filled up while we were eating and there were also lots of to-go orders being picked up. The inside had cute decor and it was a good ambiance to have dinner as the music was light and relaxing. We both enjoyed the papaya salad - light, refreshing and with a decent amount of kick at medium spicy. I really liked my tom yum noodle soup - the broth was sour and hot (temperature wise), but I would have liked a bit more spice. I've never had an egg in my tom yum before, so that was new. I enjoyed the crispy wonton and ground chicken. The rice noodles were broken up for some reason and not quite cooked enough for my taste. My friend's pad thai took quite a long time to come out - I was almost done eating by the time it was brought out - and she had filled herself up on the papaya salad. I have had many dishes but my personal fave has to e the homemade khao soi noodle dish! Also another classic dish I enjoy are the specialty meat dishes that are huge in portion size and comes with sticky rice and sauces. All meat opt are great as I have had a handful of different meats. Not to mention the drinks are superb!! the best one if the coconut water. Pure bliss and so tasty with refreshing aroma and ingredients! revives the soul!!! Seems really dark in the front, but service was very welcoming. Been here twice now, both times I just walked in and ordered, each time the service was prompt and courteous. I've ordered: Pad Thai $17.95 - had the chicken. I was nervous at first because the noodles clumped together in a mound - BUT that first bite had such good flavor. It was great, I'd recommend this place based on their pad Thai. Pad see ew $20.95 (beef) - the beef costs $3 more and pad see ew is my favorite dish. The did a good job of making it here. I've had other bland pad see ew. Pineapple fried rice $17.95 - ordered it with chicken, it's a classic. I did not mind the taste, but I think it could be more flavorful. Khao soi $20.95 - I don't get it. You get crispy and boiled noodles in soup. This dish seems popular at other Thai places too, and it's good, but I felt the other varieties of soup and noodle dishes they had were better. It's fine as a side dish or snack. Crispy roti $11.95 - I could get this all day every day. I forget how many pieces you get. It's plenty and so crispy! It also comes with a curry dipping sauce and cucumbers in a pickled liquid. I love the cucumbers. However, the roti was extra oily the 2nd time I ordered it. Chicken satay $15.95 - you get 4 skewers, dipping sauce, cucumbers in a pickled liquid, and 4pcs of toast that would make a full single slice. This dish was not worth it. Dipping sauce was good, cucumbers were good - but the amount of chicken per skewer was small, one was very skinny and dry. Solid choice, though! I've eaten here 7 times now and mostly enjoy it! Came back on Friday night and it took a while to get the servers attention for ordering. Overall they were good but food wasn't the best today. Khao Soi 5/10: Crispy noodles were not crispy, cilantro was blackened and rotting (see pic), and this is the first Thai restaurant I've seen come with whole chicken drumsticks instead of chopped meat or braised thighs. The execution just felt sloppy and lazy overall. I picked out the rotting parts of cilantro I could see but had a stomachache after eating the rest that was immersed in the soup- perhaps my fault for not just sending it back but I did mention the cilantro. Som Tum (Papaya) Salad 4/10: These salads are pre-marinated so you can't change the spice level- but it was overly spicy for "medium spice"- way too many Thai chili's and it just wasn't a good experience, i trying to help my mom finish the dish. Green curry 7/10: It was okay, but too sweet. The jasmine rice was the star of the show actually, it was cooked perfectly!! I feel bad leaving this review when I've had so many solid meals here, so I'm averaging it out at 3 stars. The service is usually better and the pad see ew and yellow curry are awesome!! My current FAVORITE Thai spot in San Jose. Yes- it tops Original Krung Thai. I've been to Khaosan maybe 3-4 times now, and they've won me over with their bold flavors, quality, and consistently great service. Tip: Come with a group of 4+ so you can try a bunch of dishes family-style. After our 4th time here, I'd say it's the best way to experience the menu, especially given their generous portions. If you're dining with a group, make a reservation (weekends esp). If it's just two people, you can usually walk in without too much of a wait. We've also done takeout before, but honestly- the food is so much better when eaten fresh at the restaurant, and it's just not quite the same at home. Now onto the food... * Ka-Praw: Spiciness was to our liking and packed full of flavor * Green Curry: A staple, rich and comforting * Pad See Ew: Loved that it wasn't too greasy and well balanced * Tom Yum Noodle Soup: Exactly what it sounds like- just order it :) * Roti Sampler - Dipping sauce is YUMM And the MUST-try dish: Khao Soi. Last night was my first time ever trying Thai food and I'm so happy that this experience took place at Khaosan Thai! The ambiance is clean and cute but the restaurant is definitely on the smaller side and it got really loud in there on a Friday evening. The service was great from beginning to end. When I mentioned to the server that it was our first time there, she was very happy to help answer any questions we had about the menu. We ordered the egg rolls as an appetizer and they came out piping hot and were very tasty. For our mains, we all shared the tom yum fried rice with shrimp, the eggplant with beef, a side of jasmine rice, the yellow curry with chicken and a noodle dish. Everything was delish!
