Tom is an amazing waiter. Definitely a plus to experience. Food was obviously good and the environment was comfortable! Tom is the shit!

MENTAI CREAM SAUCE UDON*
Julie T.

I've been on a search for mentakai pasta and I found this spot and given the great reviews I decided to come here for my birthday! There's also another location in Mountain View if that's closer to you. The plaza has plenty of parking and the space itself is spacious inside. We were kindly greeted and sat down at a booth. Here's what we ordered for our family of 5: Mentai cream sauce udon (5/5) $24.25 We were sharing this dish since I wanted everyone to try so we opted for a large and glad we did. It was super creamy, cheesy, salty from the fish roe, and had bits of crunchy tempura and seaweed in it. The noodles had a good chew and plentiful! This definitely satisfied my craving for the dish! Katsu curry udon (4/5) $27 We also ordered this in a large size and it was a little bit thicker sauce and had chunks of meat and carrots in it on top of the noodles. Comes with a side of plain white rice as well. We took Some sauce out and smothered the rice too. It was tasty! Tonkatsu Udon Deluxe (4/5) $24.50 This was a good sized bowl with a big chunk of braised pork belly, spinach, tempura shrimp, and a soft boiled egg. The broth was rich and really slurp-able. It came with a bowl of fish powder (which we didnt use) as it was tasty enough Kid's Meal (5/5) $10 $10 only! This was a really good deal for any kid that is under 12 years old. My son has a big appetite and he ate ALL of it so must be good. The meal came with: plain udon bowl, broccoli tempura, edamame, fish cake (which we put in his udon), French Fries, a jelly gummy, honest juice box and last a token for a Gashapon. That was fun he got to put his coin in and get a prize! Lastly they gave me a free ice-cream scoop for celebrating my birthday there. It was a really delicious meal and I'll definitely be back to try more dishes or when I have more Mentai cream cravings.

Whenever I'm in the SJ area, I always stop by this spot. I love noodles, and the udon is that good. The texture is perfectly bouncy and chewy every single time. I honestly can't get enough of it! I came by most recently with my bestie and we ordered the kitsune udon, niku udon, agedashi tofu and crispy onigiri bites. I personally recommend sticking with the udon. The onigiri was bland, oily, and looked nothing like the picture. The agedashi tofu is pretty good but not a must get. I've also tried the tempura before too and wasn't impressed either. Still worth coming back for the udon alone. Service is very good, the restaurant is clean, and located with its own small parking lot.

TONKOTSU UDON

Came on a Sunday right when they opened and it filled up quickly!! They have a little parking lot, definitely recommend coming early. The staff is so attentive, maybe a little overboard lol. Better more than none I guess. I ordered the Tonkatsu udon, and I'm learning I like ramen better than udon but overall was still very rich and delicious! I wish there were more toppings without the additional charge. The assorted tempura was light and crispy! Ordered the chashu onigiri and forgot to eat it because we got full so quickly. Everything came out all at once, I was surprised. Nice little get together spot for lunch or dinner, not too loud and definitely great for groups :)

The udon was first and foremost the best element of the restaurant, besides the bidets. There was a bit of a wait during dinner, but the line moved quickly and efficiently, especially for smaller parties. Our server reviewed the menu with us and gave great recommendations. My only complaint would be the limited vegetarian options, although our server did her best to accommodate us with a hot option. We ordered drinks from the seasonal sake cocktails, which were prepared tableside. *Yuzu Passion Gold: glisteningly beautiful with edible glitter but cloyingly sweet. The sake was barely detectable beneath the syrupy citrus flavoring. *Pinky Cloudy Sake: shared a similarly sweet profile but wasn't as artificial tasting. This resembled the Starbucks Pink Drink with the slightest hint of alcohol. *Mentai Cream Sauce: surprisingly wasn't too heavy and had a thinner consistency, so it gently coated the udon. The mentai carried some spiciness that greatly enhanced the creamy base. However, the salt could have been dialed back. The udon was perfectly bouncy and should be eaten quickly to maintain its chewiness. *Tempura Udon: the udon was equally as good here. The tempura was fried perfectly and retained its crunch throughout the meal. I was amazed by how the corn kernels managed to be fried separately. An above-average fry. Overall, the udon shone and I was content with our entrees. However, the drinks definitely need some work and could benefit from being less sugary. The bathrooms were also a plus, especially given the bidets.

The dry udon with tempura was very good. The tonkatsu udon was tasty too. The rice bowl was quite good, with the sauce on the tempura. Parking was plentiful. Easy to find restaurant with maps. Service was quite attentive. Nice clean bright huge place. Will come again.

The creamy salmon udon was amazing. the creamy sauce and the tangy al-dente like udon cooked to perfection! Everything tasted amazing. Service was great also. Can't complain. I would recommend this place.

Crispy Onigri bites
Cindy M.

We started off with an order of Crispy Onigiri Bites. 5* - lightly crispy on the outside with tender rice on the inside topped with tender pieces of pork lightly dressed with sauce. It comes with two generous cakes, one for each of us. Niku Udon - Hot 5* First off, the generous portion is worth the $22 Broth was rich. Not too greasy and flavorful. Tender beef and noodles plus the toppings were excellent. Salmon Spinach Udon was outstanding. - Hot 5* I ordered a small which was just right for me but if you want a larger portion for more filling and satisfying meal get the large. The creamy broth was something I have never had before. The flavor of the spinach and the green onions were perfectly balanced with the saltiness and umami of the salmon leaving room for the chewy noodles to stand out. I literally ate and slurped every bit of broth in the bowl. Everyone around us seemed to be enjoying their food. Standout aside from music and service were the noodles. Thick, chewy and very fresh. We could see the staff making the noodles in the kitchen. We want Tom next time we come in! He gave us recommendations on times to enjoy a meal without the crowds. We came in around 5:30 on a Monday night. Said weekends are crazy busy but would suggest for close to 8:00 p.m. for a later dinner if you can't make it early. The other server who greeted us when we came in also seated us and checked in on us throughout the meal as well. You can tell everyone works as a team here. He was managing the doordash orders which were ongoing. Spicy fish powder is a must. Iced matcha tea delicious! Atmosphere very nice and relaxing. I can honestly say this goes on my top list for eating out in San Jose.

SALMON SPINACH CREAM SAUCE UDON

Greeted promptly. For starters, we had Corn Tempura and Takoyaki -- both consistently served hot and delicious. (More dipping sauce for all tempura dishes should be provided however.) The Tempura Zaru Udon was overly chewy, like it was made then sat refrigerated for a period of time. Tempura Sara Udon is served cold, but the noodles should still be prepared fresh, then served over ice. The Mentai Cream Sauce Udon is always a hit, as well. Service was very attentive and our water refilled constantly.

BEEF SUKIYAKI NABEYAKI UDON*

Finally checked out Udon Mugizo in San Jose and had to try a couple of dishes since the menu had so many options. I got the Eel Don and the Beef Sukiyaki Nabeyaki Udon. The Eel Don was a solid choice the eel was tender, flavorful, and had that nice sweet-savory glaze that went really well with the rice. If you're indecisive like me the best choice would to get one of the naveyaki what's unique about it is it comes with sukiyaki and udon. It's the best of both worlds. The Beef Sukiyaki Nabeyaki Udon was definitely the more filling of the two. The udon noodles were thick and chewy, and the beef had a nice savory sukiyaki flavor. Overall, I enjoyed both dishes. If you're a fan of thick, chewy udon and Japanese comfort food, Udon Mugizo is definitely worth checking out. I'd come back to try some of their other udon options next time.

Rainier F.

Out of all the delicious Japanese food, udon noodles is my least favorite out of all the Japanese cuisine. Udon is just too thick of a noodle for me unfortunately. We happen to be in the Saratoga area during dinner recently. We decided to check out Udon Mugizo. Glad we did. We arrived on a Saturday evening for dinner. The restaurant is located in San Jose, in a nice area off Saratoga Avenue close to the 280 freeway. Parking is accessible in the parking lot all around the restaurant. Udon Mugizo is fairly large with plenty of tables and booths. The modern cultural decor is rich and intimate with traditional heritage. Atmosphere is inviting and family friendly. We ordered the Tonkatsu Udon, Mentai Cream Udon with a side of Chashu, large hot sake, and an Unagi Seiro Set. Everything was high quality and delicious. My son's Tonkatsu Udon was flavorful. He enjoyed the broth very much. My Mentai Cream Sauce Udon was different but uniquely flavored for an udon bowl. The signature sauce was scrumptious and went very well with the udon noodles. The shrimp tempura from the assorted tempura was crispy and tasty with the tempura sauce. Unfortunately the corn tempura was ok. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Udon Mugizo. The staff were friendly and accommodating. I really enjoyed the fresh authentic udon noodles. It definitely was the star of all our dishes. The vibe was welcoming and bustling. Price point was fair. The Yelp waiting list online is a nice touch and recommended for anyone looking to arrive at the restaurant before hand. We hope to be back to try other dishes on the menu.

No matter which location I go to, whether if it's SJ or SF, there's always a wait, and rightfully so! I went with a party of 6 and we were seated in about less than 40 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. I ordered the beef sukiyaki udon; it was very tasty and the noodles were perfectly chewy. They make the noodles in house. I think my only complaint was that my dish seemed to be on the smaller side compared to other dishes, but it was enough to satisfy me. I also ordered a glass of the plum wine and it was refreshing and had a subtle sweetness to it! Shout out to Tom, our server! He was super nice to our group and even gave our entire party 6 bibs for the soups.

Niku udon
Andrew T.

I definitely recommend putting yourself on the waitlist. The service here is great and the staff is friendly. The food didn't take too long to come out either. There's plenty of parking available. I liked the traditional modern Japanese interior. I ordered the niku udon which was flavorful and delicious. The soup could have been hotter though. The serving size here is decent. The mentai cream sauce udon is tasty as well. The strawberry packed soda tasted like sparking water and barely tasted like strawberry.

Udon Mugizo Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Udon Mugizo

Can you order takeout bento without dining in?

Hello Sally T Yes, we do…

Is there a to go option?

Yes, there is. You can also buy *just* the uncooked noodles, as well, to take home and add to whatever soup you desire.

What time do they open for lunch, 11am?

Yes 11am everyday!

Can they accommodate large parties (8-9) assuming we call ahead and make a reservation?

Yes! When we went, we had 8 in our party. We did reserve in advance and I would recommend that because it does get packed.

What are the vegan options for udon? Is the broth vegetable-based?

Maybe the closest thing is the vegetable udon, but I would call and double check just in case.

Can the vegetable udon be made warm? (Looking for warm veg/vegan options)

They serve vegetable udon warmly. Tell the server.

Anywho, we ordered a variety of items to try: new stamina don, clam chowder croquette, kani chirashi bento, and a salmon kama bento. Regarding the food: New stamina don came with slice beef, sliced beef tongue, braised pork, poached egg, and kimchi over rice. The sliced beef was cooked to rare, and the braised pork was very tender. The rice also came with the poached egg, kewpie mayo and a lemon, mixing it all together with the rice made it have a nice creamy flavor. Clam chowder croquette was something I have never heard of before, so I definitely wanted to try it. This was delicious, would definitely get it again. A fried crispy croquette with clam chowder in it but also some mashed potatoes and tonkotsu sauce on top. Kani chirashi bento had snow crab, fish roe over rice, rolled egg omelette, sashimi, fried boneless chicken, and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The sashimi came with 4 pieces, 2 tuna and 2 salmon. the tuna was a little fishy but the soy sauce helped. The salmon was actually pretty good - good fattiness. The fried chicken was fine, a few pieces were dry. Overall this bento was good. Salmon Kama bento is salmon collar over rice, fried boneless chicken, takoyaki and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The salmon collar needed some salt in my opinion. For the food overall, it was a little bit under seasoned for me but for portion, price and quality are good.

The server, Aya, recommended the Housemade Ginger Ale and it was life changing! It tasted not too sweet and had the perfect balance of ginger. The food tastes like traditional Japanese cuisine. You pull into an utterly unremarkable Santa Clara strip mall and, for a moment, wonder if you have…read morethe right place. Then you open the door. Suddenly, you are somewhere else. Leichi is tiny, roughly 20 seats with booths tucked against the walls, sake bottles lining the room, and that wonderfully restrained quiet you find in small restaurants in Japan. It reminds me far more of the little restaurants I've loved in Tokyo, Kyoto and Kyushu cities than of the endless parade of sushi restaurants scattered around the Bay Area. And that distinction matters, because Leichi isn't really about sushi rolls. It is about something much more Japanese: craftsmanship. There is a Japanese idea, "kodawari" an almost uncompromising devotion to the details of one's craft, including the details most people may never consciously notice. That is what Leichi feels like to me. House-Made Tofu. Start here. It arrives looking almost too simple: impossibly soft tofu with ginger, green onion, salt and house-made soy sauce. That's basically it. But take a bite and you understand the restaurant FULLY. The tofu is delicate and almost custard-like, cool and silken against the sharp little spark of ginger and scallion, while the soy adds depth without drowning it. It is a dish with nowhere to hide, and Leichi doesn't need to hide anything. They make a sesame tofu version as well, equally worth ordering. Chawanmushi. Another deceptively quiet dish. The Japanese steamed egg custard is silky, savory and deeply comforting. Grilled Edamame. Rather than simply being steamed and dumped into a bowl, the pods arrive grilled and lightly blistered, their edges carrying a faint smokiness, with just enough salt clinging to your fingertips. A completely ordinary dish becomes something you keep reaching for. Nasu Dengaku. This may be one of the prettiest versions I've had. Two pieces of eggplant arrive lacquered in miso, one white, one red, the glossy surfaces caramelized until sweet, savory and slightly charred. Underneath, the eggplant practically collapses into creaminess. It looks almost like edible artwork, but more importantly, it tastes fantastic. Fresh Soba. The kitchen makes its own soba, served either cold or in broth, and that alone tells you something about the seriousness of the place. Good soba is a food of texture, aroma and restraint; there isn't a pile of sauce available to disguise mediocre noodles. Udon with Tempura. The udon has that wonderful chew and elasticity good udon should have, especially satisfying submerged in hot broth. The accompanying tempura is crisp and lightly battered. This is one place where I'll still give Japan the edge: some of the best tempura I've eaten in Kyoto had an almost impossibly thin, delicate shell that shattered on contact. Leichi's is very good; Kyoto ruined the curve. Then there is the seafood. I've never had a piece of sushi or sashimi here that didn't taste meticulously handled and exceptionally fresh. But one dish is the one I keep thinking about. Chirashi. It arrives like a little jewelry box. Carefully arranged slices of fish sit over warm rice, with ikura scattered across the top like translucent orange pearls. There is something particularly lovely about the temperature contrast, the cool, clean seafood against the gently warm rice underneath. It makes the bowl feel comforting rather than austere. Add a bowl of miso soup alongside it and, frankly, I don't need much else. Miso Black Cod. Another standout. The fish is so tender it separates at the slightest pressure from your chopsticks, while the miso has caramelized around the edges into something sweet, salty and deeply savory. The richness of the cod and the fermented sweetness of the glaze are exactly why this dish became a Japanese restaurant classic when it's done properly. And Leichi is not only for seafood. Japanese Curry. Their curry is wonderful the deeply comforting Japanese style, with slowly cooked vegetables creating that characteristic savory sweetness and richness. Ochazuke. This is another dish that captures what Leichi does so well. Rice and its accompaniments arrive first, followed by hot broth that you pour over everything yourself. Sake. The list is thoughtful, and when you order a bottle, they bring the bottle itself to the table. On my trips through Japan, I became fascinated by the seriousness with which people sometimes approach seemingly ordinary work. And there is something almost spiritual about it. Leichi feels like a tiny manifestation of that philosophy hidden in a Santa Clara strip mall. And behind all of it, the feeling that the chef that cares very deeply about getting these seemingly simple things right, day after day. Quiet. Precise. Unpretentious. And full of soul. I'm incredibly glad this little restaurant exists.

Unfortunately, our experience during our most recent visit was so disappointing that we no longer plan to return. While we were having dinner, my dad was watching a soccer game on his phone. At no point did any staff member ask us to lower the volume. After the table behind us left, our waiter politely informed us that those guests had complained about the sound and asked if we could turn it down. My dad immediately lowered the volume without any issue. After that, we noticed the owner repeatedly looking at us and speaking to the waiter about the situation. Feeling uncomfortable, my dad asked if everything was okay. The owner's response was unexpectedly rude and confrontational. He aggressively told my dad to turn off the phone, even though the volume had already been lowered and my dad was complying. The interaction felt hostile and intimidating. From that point on, we felt extremely uncomfortable. The owner continued to stare at us and discuss the situation with staff while we were trying to finish our meal. Rather than stay and enjoy the rest of our dinner, we decided to leave. In more than 10 years of dining here, we have never experienced anything like this. We understand that noise complaints can happen and would have gladly cooperated, as we already did. What was upsetting was the way the situation was handled by the owner. Long-time customers should be treated with respect, and unfortunately, that was not our experience. Because of how we were treated, we will not be returning.
