Flat iron cut

Mokkoji joins the Milpitas community located across the street from Great Mall situated behind Trader Joes. The parking garage is quite tight and can fill up on weekends. We came on the day before grand opening and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality. Immediately as you walk in, you'll notice the restaurant is on the smaller side compared to other shabu shabu restaurants. The tables are long and it seems like a lot of reviewers mention you may be seated right next to a stranger without a divider, which could be awkward or hard to enjoy your meal without listening to another party's conversation. The menu features a few set options as well as a la carte. I would say the set is only worth it if you drink or want the dessert. If you came strictly for hotpot, I would stick to a la carte section. * spicy pork broth - upcharge but made the beef and veggies extra flavorful. Its worth the splurge. * flat iron mokkoji cut - highly recommend this cut! Both the marinated and non marinated options are great as we did half and half. The marinade kind of just dissolves into your soup but both tasted delicious. Mokkoji checks all the boxes. Premade thoughtfully crafted sauces, high quality meat cuts, and fabulous service. If you are someone who prioritizes high quality food (and willing to spend a bit more) rather than quantity, you will enjoy Mokkoji.

*Visited around 4:30pm on a Wednesday with a party of 2 I finally got a chance to try Mokkoji and I was pretty impressed with the staff and food here. The restaurant itself is a little on the smaller side, but you are able to join their Yelp Waitlist before arriving to restaurant. Keep in mind that there's a parking garage right next to the restaurant- it's a very quick walk :) The staff here are incredibly kind and was able to explain the menu very well. OKAY THE FOOD: * Sukiyaki broth: I am an avid sukiyaki shabu pot person, and had to try their sukiyaki. I didn't realize the broth came with mushrooms and had planned to take them out, but our waitress noticed and was quick to get a new pot for me- I have a mushroom allergy but it's not super intense, and I didn't tell our waitress but she was SO sweet and made sure I didn't have a pot with any mushroom. * Marinated Prime Rib: my GOODNESS was this cut delicious. I think I like a tad bit more than their marinated brisket. I definitely want to come back and try their other meats and their combo sets.

First time trying the shabu shabu at Mokkoji, and we were surprised to learn this is their newest location -- they even have one in Indonesia. We ordered the all‑beef platter combo for two and added a marinated flat iron beef plate for our group of three. The combo comes with veggies, rice, six garlic shrimp as appetizer , two drinks or beers, and two ice creams. Just note that the price does not include broth. We tried the spicy pork, spicy miso, and fire crab broths. They also offer ponzu and sesame dipping sauces. Presentation was solid and the beef quality was definitely nice. Prices are on the higher side, especially considering it's not all‑you‑can‑eat, but overall it was a good experience for a first visit. Service was ok, need to keep asking for plate and bowl when they get the broth first without utensils. I also hope that they will offer refill for drinks and have options for more than 2 combo in the future.

Beef sampler. Pork broth, spicy pork, and spicy sukiyaki. Delicious!!

Love love love! Went here with some friends to try it out. I've had Mokkoji before in SoCal a few times, but this was both of my friends' first time. Mokkoji is in a little plaza with a Trader Joe's and Starbucks nearby. Theres a parking garage connected to the Trader Joe's, where there's retail parking spaces (both on first and second floor) available. Since we went on a Thursday evening, parking was very easy. Mokkoji itself is a small restaurant, but there were a good amount of tables available. Since it was a weekday, there was no wait at all. Our server was also very sweet, and helped explained the menu to us since we wanted to try the bigger meat bundles. She also suggested popular broths and marinated meats! Overall, she took care of us very well. The meal itself was absolutely delicious. I had the spicy sukiyaki broth and it was spicy and sweet but savory all at the same time. You also get a cup of rice, udon noodles, an assortment of veggies, and tofu in addition to your meats. Everything tasted so good and fresh. You also get sauces on the side, and the sukiyaki also gets an egg sauce. The sauces definitely elevated the eating experience. Overall, it was super tasty and service was awesome. Will definitely come here again! :)

My friend and I have been regular customers of Mokkoji when it was in Socal, so we were beyond excited to see it come to the Bay. Unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing. My friend's spicy miso tasted like instant ramen soup base, and towards the end of her meal, the waiter offered to add more miso to the broth. The soup finally tasted like miso, but we were basically finished with the meal. Ultimately, the meal came out to $50 per person, after tax, tip, and the additional card charge they apply, which could've easily been the price at an AYCE buffet elsewhere. I would highly recommend getting your shabu shabu fix somewhere else, where you would get more bang for your buck.

First off, I want to share that I love going to the Mokkoji branches in OC/SoCal and I try to go there whenever I am in the area. Once I found out that they would be opening one in the Bay Area, I had to go and try it for myself. Unfortunately, the quality of their food wasn't as good as the ones in SoCal and the menu costed more. I came with a group of friends during lunch time on a Friday. There was no wait and we got seated almost immediately. The server was very attentive and explained the menu quite well. I decided to get the Mokkoji cut with the marinate on it. I asked for the marinate on the side and they said they can't do that (in the SoCal branches this wasn't an issue). When the food came, the meet was super thinly sliced... like crazy thin and I was very surprised since I know the branches in SoCal were very generous with the cuts. I am just upset that I have to pay more and get smaller cuts. I will still be going to Mokkoji but not this branch unless they fix their serving size issues.

I love mokkoji in socal so I was super excited to see one open in Milpitas!! The food is good and I love the sesame sauce! All the ingredients were fresh and its one of my favorite shabu spots of all time. Service was super good but the wait time was sooo long :( we were first on the waitlist for 20-30 minutes and it was also raining, not the restaurants fault but theres not much awning to hide under to avoid the rain. I liked how clean and spaced out the tables were though! Everything felt very clean and it wasnt too cramped. But mokkoji up here is definitely more expensive and the prices were hard to justify for the food

The service is really good, they were nice and quick once we were inside. They did check up on us here and there how we liked the food. The meat was arguably the best thing here. Extremely solid. And the sauces were pretty good. The place was cozy with modern asian decor. The thing I couldn't get behind was the broth, the original had a shroom taste and the miso had no miso flavoring. The side of greens with a bit of noodles was lack luster. It felt like a little this and that. I think it woulda been nicer if it came with more of one green. Or the choice between no rice for more noodle. The pricing for sure was not worth it in my opinion. A plate of 3 meats with broth was around $60 a person.

The popular Mokkoji, a casual Shabu Shabu spot, finally opened up their Bay Area location. I've been staring at this spot every time I'm at Trader Joe's and am so glad they're open! I had a large flat iron Mokkoji cut and New York for the meats. Both meats were really good, although I prefer the flat iron cut, it was flavorful and well marinated with garlic. They also have a $24.99 lunch which includes a regular size brisket (originally $29.98) and tea. Also they have unlimited rice and veggies (only for the bok choy, lettuce and kale) so be sure to ask for extra veggies! The fire crab broth was sooo seafoody/ crabby, it was not bad but also not that good. I also tried my friend's pork and spicy pork broth, and the spicy pork broth was the best of the 3 broths we had. Dinner time on a weekday had no wait. Although the place was full when I left at 6.30pm.

The hype is real yall! It's pretty darn good! My friends and I were a table of 4 and came around 7:30pm on a Sunday and waited for about an hour and 15 minutes until we got seated. They cut off the online waitlist sometime past noon I think so you can only waitlist in person. We each decided to do the "SPECIAL FOR 2" with the beef sampler set since you can get a variety of different meats. It's $119 for the beef sampler set which is around 60 per person if you're sharing for 2. It's definitely well worth the price for how much you're getting! The special for 2 also comes with two sets of refillable rice, house made sauce and veggies. It doesn't say on the menu or I'm just blind but it comes with garlic shrimp as an appetizer. For the veggies only the bokchoy and and the kale are refillable. You also get a choice of drinks that come with either 2 pints of Sapporo beer, 2 hot/cold sake or 2 soft drinks. And then for dessert you get 2 choices of taiyaki ice cream with your flavor of choosing. I love that some veggies are refillable but I will say they skimp out on the enoki mushroom. I wish there was more enoki but it was literally a few strands. However, I do love that it comes with a tofu with the mokkoji branded on there. As for the sauce this place does not have a sauce bar. They gave you 2 bowls of sesame sauce and some other yummy sauce that I'm guessing is similar to ponzu with soy sauce or something. We also for their pickled cucumber with chili oil as an appetizer and it's marinated and pickled nicely with yummy tangy flavor! They have a good variety of broth flavors and I chose spicy sukiyaki! It was really yummy and you can ask them to make it more spicy. But beware because the spice they use it actually pretty spicy and I'm a spicy lover! The meats were pretty good quality and you can choose to have them come marinated or not. We asked our server what he recommends and he said we won't be disappointed with marinated so we tried that. The marinated meat is good but it changed the flavor of my broth overtime as I put in more meat. Persoanlly I prefer it non marinated for next time as I like to taste my broth at its original state. Because at the end my broth was just really salty from all the marinated meat that was cooking inside. The garlic shrimp were really good and I really like the outside coating. It was flavorful and I liked the sauce they paired with the shrimp. I got the yuzu nade as my choice of soft drink and it's really good! My friend got their iced matcha green tea and it's really watered down. I could barely taste the matcha and it just tasted like mainly of water with added sugar LOL. LOVE that taiyaki icecream comes with the special two set! They had either vanilla or chocolate to choose from and I got vanilla! The inside of this place is quite small though and that definitely why the line takes so long! I hope they can expand this restaurant here because it's good and popular! I highly recommend trying this place out and getting the special for 2 beef sampler set. After taxes and stuff but before tip it was around 73 for each person which is so good for how much you're getting. I was so extremely full by the end of this but satisfied.

Mokkoji is located under an apartment complex, Graham at The Fields. Not sure if they have their own parking area but we just found 2 hour street parking at the Gideon Apartments complex right across the street. We arrived about 10 minutes early before opening on a Friday and there were two groups already waiting. We got seated right away once they opened. I was really surprised at how small the restaurant was.. not many tables since it's a small space. It was clean with high ceilings though. We ordered... FRIED FISH CAKE BALLS $11 -fried fish ball with fish roe. Came with a side mayo-chili powder sauce. Good, nothing too special. I enjoyed how creamy it was. 4/5* FLAT IRON "MOKKOJI CUT" (R10pieces) $28.98 + FIRE CRAB BROTH +$5 -served with set of rice, house-made sauces & veggies. Came with half a raw crab in the broth. Broth was sweeter than expected.. with a hint of seafood. The flat iron was very soft and tender when cooked. 4/5* TORO "FATTY BELLY" (R10pieces) $30.98 + SPICY PORK BROTH +$5 -served with set of rice, house-made sauces & veggies. More of a savory broth. The meat had a good amount of fat to meat ratio. 4/5* ADD ON-GLASS NOODLES $5 -loved how chewy they were after we cooked them! Pricey though since the portion was small. 4.5/5* ADD ON-MEATBALLS (5) $10 -pretty good and fresh. Made in-house so they were super soft. They were on the sweeter side which was kinda odd..and definitely not worth $10. 3/5* Our server was friendly but definitely a newbie. He had to go back to the kitchen to get some answers for our questions. They kept bringing us other peoples orders which I thought was kinda funny...happened about 3 times. We also had to ask for rice but it wasn't ready at the time. The rice was grain rice? It was super mushy the first round, and a bit dryer the second round. Their rice and veggies are unlimited though! You get a side of ponzu and sesame sauce. If you like "spicy," you can ask for their spicy drops which they will squeeze into your sauce. The server said it was ghost pepper. I asked for 5 drops and there definitely was a kick! Overall we would come back if we were craving. Their meats are definitely better than most and their broth tasted unique. Service was friendly with some kinks. I wouldn't wait too long for a table though..would definitely come on a weekday.

Finally tried Mokkoji and it's easily my new favorite hot pot spot! It's located right below the luxury apartments across from Great Mall and parking is pretty ample with a retail parking structure plus additional spots outside. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and I loved the variety of meat cuts and options to choose from. One standout for me was the ghost pepper spicy drops -- such a game changer. You can add them to your broth or sauce depending on how much heat you want and they bring a really nice kick. Each order comes with veggies and you can get unlimited refill on certain veggies (bok choy, kale, and cabbage). A couple of small downsides: I do wish they offered single-eater beef combos so you could try a wider range of beef cuts without committing to full portions. Also, the menu can feel a bit overwhelming on your first visit since there are so many options and it's pretty busy visually. Overall though, definitely a spot I'll keep coming back to!

The broths and sauces are decent but doesn't stand out to me compared to other good hot pot/shabu shabu places. The gomadare was a little salty and not nutty enough for me. Ponzu was decent, but not zingy enough for me. They give smaller portions of rice and veggies, which I'm fine with, but the rice and certain veggies are refillable. Good tactic for them to reduce waste and be more price efficient. I tried their flat iron, brisket, toro, and New York. Flat iron was the most tender and was my favorite followed by toro. You have a choice of marinated versus non-marinated meats, but toro by default is marinated. I think the marinade is like a garlic oil/paste. The pricing here really bothers me. The price per cut of meat increases for each portion size instead of being a flat price across the board. For example, for their popular flat iron meat, 10 pieces is $28.98, 14 pieces is $33.98, 20 pieces is $43.98, and 32 pieces is $64.98. Each tier increases in price by multiples of 5, but the size doesn't increase proportionally. It's crazy to me that between 10 to 14 pieces, I'm paying $5 more for 4 pieces and between 14 to 20 pieces, I'm paying $10 more for 6 pieces. I think Mokkoji is average shabu shabu, but it is very pricey for what it offers, and I do not think the long waits are worth it (our wait was 1.5 hours on this visit). It feels like they're charging premium prices for a not very premium experience. Comparatively, for around $36-$46, I can get good authentic AYCE shabu shabu at Kiwami for dinner, and it's even cheaper during lunch. Mokkoji's most expensive meat tier is about $115 for 32 pieces, but for around $90-$100 at Mikiya (their top tier), I get AYCE Japanese wagyu. I will not be returning Mokkoji.

Special concentrate spicy drops (recommend 2 drops if you like spicy)

Although Taishoken is known for their tsukemen, I'll always opt for mazesoba if I see it on a menu. The mazesoba here is easily some of the best I've had in the Bay Area. The included piece of chashu is well-seasoned, fall apart tender and had a good balance of lean to fatty meat. The noodles are cooked to perfection and have a really nice chew to them. There is just the right amount of sauce in the dish, and the raw egg yolk adds a wonderful richness that coats each strand of noodle when mixed. Included with your mazesoba is a small side of vinegar. I would definitely recommend trying out the mixed mazesoba on its own -- without the vinegar, and adding in the vinegar about half-way in in order to try out a completely different flavor profile of the noodles. The acidity of the vinegar cuts through the richness and keeps you coming back for bite after bite. If you've never tried mazesoba before, I can't recommend it enough at Taishoken. The chicken katsu curry set was easily the star of the table -- crispy cutlet over rice with thick, savory curry that had the perfect balance of sweetness and richness, and it came with a comforting bowl of miso soup. Even with the curry sauce, the katsu stayed crunchy to the last bite. The chicken katsu don brought a softer, homestyle vibe with fluffy egg, onions, and lightly sweet sauce soaking into the rice. Super comforting and satisfying without feeling too heavy. For appetizers, we tried the shrimp & vegetable katsu and the shrimp & oyster katsu. Everything came out hot and freshly fried with a light, crispy coating. The shrimp were juicy with a nice snap, while the oysters were rich and buttery inside with that perfect crunch outside. I even got up to walk to the kitchen at the 45-minute mark and was told that the kitchen was "very busy". The restaurant wasn't even full, and we had had reservations, so they should have been prepared. Also, when we ordered directly via the app, the food came out quickly. I have a feeling that our initial orders never got put in. We were a large party, 10 people per table (2 tables), and the waitstaff kept bringing the food to the wrong tables. We would get food we didn't order and vice versa with the other table. Not sure where the disconnect was, because each table had their own QR code. If I decide to give them another chance (again, everything I ate was well-prepared and delicious), I would probably order my food directly from the app to ensure it actually makes it to the kitchen, and not have to wait an hour.

exceptional service. very unique take on sushi…read more The place is too crowded, small room, which is perfect for you to focus on culinary experience. I do not post any photo here or comment on the food. You should go and experience for yourself.

I feel like I'm being gaslit reading everyone else's reviews.. I was so excited to try Ichika but…read moreit's ended up being the worst omakase experience I've had by far. And I've tried a fair share of omakase places. The prix fixe 9 course meal was $150 per person, and I personally feel the quality of the ingredients and overall seasoning of the dishes did not meet that price point. It was already a rough start with the appetizers. I'm also a texture person so maybe someone else would like these but I was not a fan of the vegetable jelly nor the goopy seaweed salad. Had I known this prior to dining I don't think I would have wanted to go with the omakase menu. The chawanmushi was very underseasoned and missing salt completely. On the menu it says it has crab in it but the only crab meat you get with it comes in a tiny claw that you have no way of digging out The nigiri, which I was most excited for, fell VERY flat. The fish wasn't particularly fresh and I found a bone in my nigiri. (??) The rice was also really dry and mushy. I was genuinely so disappointed at this. Miso sea bass was overly sweet which didn't really work with how fatty the fish was. It was too much. Also found more bones in the miso sea bass but that's less gobsmacking than finding it in your nigiri. The dessert, matcha tiramisu, just tasted like straight up cream and not sweet at all. I don't have a sweet tooth by any means but this could've used sugar. I didn't feel very good eating this, the fattiness of the cream plus not having any flavor ruined it for me :( Overall, the main theme is just the lack of seasoning in any of the dishes plus ingredients not being fresh. I know it's Kaiseki style, but the dishes also seemed very uninspired and plating was kinda messy. When I looked closely, the plates weren't clean and there were marks.. Maybe I'm being nitpicky but at a price point like this, the details matter. Word of advice, if you live in South Bay and want omakase, just take your $ and drive an hour up to SF. My bf took me here to celebrate our anniversary and I feel awful about how bad it was.. +1 star for the friendly service.
