I visited and enjoyed Home Eat branches in Cupertino and Sunnyvale, I was excited to see their counter at the Milpitas Great Mall food court. Who knows, this was my worst experience. I had Chili Fried Chicken, which was overly spicy with absolutely no other flavor, give up after one bite. Shrimp Pork Wontons were also bad with very thick, doughy skins and a tasteless filling. Their monthly promo drinks item were either too sweet, or too watery, it was pre-mixed and no way to adjust sugar or ice level. Won't be back. read more

I really liked the food but my spice tolerance level is not there. Everything was too spicy for my tolerance level. I loved loved the shredded potato salad but could only have so much. The hot and spicy noodles were filling but had to split it over a couple of meals as it was too spicy. Also tried their beef wrapped rolls. It was nice but I would prefer to have a bit more hoisin sauce in there. I was surprised/happy to see home eat at the great mall. They have a pretty formidable presence in the Bay Area with several restaurants already. They are in the food court section in the great mall and occupy the space of almost 2-3 regular sized stalls. They offer cold and hot dishes, the hot dishes are similar to Panda Express style. On top of that they also have their regular menu offerings including all the specials they offer on a weekly/monthly basis at their other restaurants. I got the special for the week- salt and pepper fried fish. It was an instant gratification for some cravings after my long walk through the mall. It was delish but undeniably greasy. I ended up with a tummy ache after I devoured 5 of the fish pieces. Anyway, fish itself was soft and well cooked, outside was crispy. Home Eat is located at the food court in Great Mall and offers both fast food takeout and more restaurant like to go options. For their entree boxes, think of Panda Express but higher quality. You can order a base of fried rice or chow mein and then add entrees. They don't skimp on the portions here and pile it on really high. The entree box was just standard to us. The fried rice was on the blander side but I didn't have high expectations given its fast food style. The broccoli beef had more broccoli than beef so I was missing some of that protein but tasted pretty standard. The mapo tofu on the other hand was pretty good; it carried a spicy sichuan flavor profile that I wasn't expecting so it had a good kick. The portion for the price is a steal though and you can also add a soft drink to it. What I really liked was ordering from their kiosk where things are made to order. If you have time to wait the food comes out fresh. We ordered some salt and pepper wings and they did not disappoint. They were piping hot, crispy, juicy and tender, and had great flavor. This is one of the best Chinese takeouts I've been in a food court. I'm surprised that this vendor has plenty of options such as appetizers, house specials, a la carte entrees, hot pots, soups, combos, etc. Normally, you have to go to a regular restaurant that has this many options. The food is slightly more expensive than many overrated fast food places, but it's fair enough because the food quality here is higher. There are several ways to order food at the food court location including ordering online for pickup, ordering on the touch screens or ordering the express items. I opted to order the express items which was pretty cheap. I ordered the black pepper beef and honey walnut shrimp. My friend ordered the kung pao chicken and orange chicken. The quality is not up to par with the actual restaurants. The food tastes stale and not as flavorful as the restaurant. My friend who eats at Home Eat restaurants almost weekly, he thought the food was pretty bad as well. Ordering was simple and very similar to Panda Express. This was my second time ordering from Home Eats at Great Mall in Milpitas, and unfortunately, it was a completely different experience from my first visit. The first time I came in (during a weekday with low foot traffic), the food was fresh, hot, and really tasty. That experience made it an easy decision to come back. This recent visit, however, was on a Saturday--and I honestly should have trusted my instincts and walked away. Won't be a next time... It started when I asked a simple question about the two sizes of honey walnut shrimp: one priced around $12 and the other around $20. All I wanted to know was whether the $12 portion would be enough for three people. Instead of a helpful response, the two employees spoke to each other in their native language and dismissively told me "no," with a tone that felt rude and unhelpful. That moment alone made me uncomfortable, and in hindsight, I should have left right then. I decided to order anyway because of my previous good experience--and that was my mistake. The food quality this time was disappointing. The honey walnut shrimp was clearly refried. As someone who cooks regularly, I can tell when fried food has been reheated--it affects the texture, taste, and overall quality. Honestly, it was so bad it made Panda Express's honey walnut shrimp taste golden by comparison. If taking it back would have made a difference I would have shot back there, but knowing what I know about certain establishments. They would not right their wrongs. So it's easier to just not go back. To make matters worse, I also witnessed the two employees scooting themselves across the counter to get to the customer side instead of simply walking around. In a food establishment, seeing shoes come into contact with surfaces near where food is handled is concerning and raises questions about overall cleanliness and hygiene standards. Between the poor customer service, questionable cleanliness, and the food quality, this visit felt like a bait-and-switch compared to my first experience.
