I have no complains when we're here during lunch time as the service was okay in general. However, the last time we were here, we tried to have dinner here. It's busier compared when we ate during lunch time. The server that we have is not as friendly and accommodating. My wife, oldest son and I returned to Katsu Gin for lunch yesterday. We arrived around 1:15pm for lunch and this time we didn't have to wait for a table. The last time, Katsu Gin was fairly new and a lot of people were trying it for their first time. Our wait was around 20 minutes to get a table. Yesterday, we were able to walk right in and got seated quickly. The restaurant was pretty crowded and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food and having friendly conversations. My wife ordered a Chicken Katsu Bowl, our son had a Curry Pork Katsu Udon and I had a Tonkatsu Bowl. My wife and I ordered from their lunch menu, while our son ordered from their regular menu. Our food came out hot and fresh. Our Miso Soups were hot and had a good amount of Nori (seaweed) and tofu too. I like the Tsukemono they provide as well. We all enjoyed our meals. Upon coming in, they have a tv showing some sports and a good amount of tables. Servers are super nice and the owner took our order before we got to the table so we didn't have to wait too long for food. All their katsus were perfectly breaded and crispy, while the meat is still moist - not dry. The cabbage salad is ever so thinly sliced and just such a good pair with the katsu. If you've been to Japan, the presentation of the food at Katsu Gin will definitely make you miss Japan. I feel like I could have had a better experience, since it seems I went on an off day. I kept dipping the katsu in the different sauces to mask the aftertaste but I stopped eating because I couldn't ignore it anymore. Sorry for asking... :/ It's normal for katsu places in Japan to have huge piles of cabbage so I wasn't surprised. The cabbage added a relief from all the fried fish I was eating. Miso soup was standard with nice big chunks of tofu; the rice was fluffy and light. Chicken Curry Katsu (3/5) - Chicken was juicy and plentiful, but honestly the curry had no taste. It added a that gravy like texture but didn't have that deep, rich curry flavor we think of when it comes to Japanese katsu. Usually at these spots you're asked how spicy you want the curry to be but here it's all mild, with no option to add your own spice. VIBE: Interior is simplistic, almost a little cramped. The tray that the food comes out on takes up the whole table space so don't expect to put anything on the table. It's very loud inside. Hard to have conversations. Dare I say it? This place had chicken katsu curry that was better than Curry Hyuga! And I don't say that lightly because I LOVE Curry Hyuga! Upon recommendation by a friend, we came here to eat. I had wanted to like this place, but It's the little things that bother me here, though there definitely were some highlights. And if some changes are made, it may be better. We ordered the Tonkatsu Curry set, the Kirekatsu set, and the Udon w/ curry set. The commonality of the three dishes were the three huge "bricks" of tonkatsu. Though they were awesomely juicy and had a nice crunch to the coating, they lacked flavor. I believe this is due to the shear size of the tenderloin (each one would constitute one serving of meat.) Even with tonkatsu sauce (very sparsely drizzled), the flavor was lacking. I prefer the bite-sized cuts instead. Perhaps the most frustrating is the weight of each brick made it a challenge to hold with chopsticks (in all fairness, they did provide a fork . . .). And twice I dropped the brick into my bowl of udon, splashing the curry broth everywhere. Grrrrr! The curry had a spicy kick at the start, but then . . . Mixed feelings. Difficult to describe, but it seems that there was an emphasis more on the spiciness, but not much on flavor? For me, the blend was not balanced. That is what each of us felt. The curry sauce for the udon was nice, however and did not overpower the noodles. The highlights were the pickled carrots and scallion bulbs - outstanding!And they were my favorite item of the entire meal! Very crunchy and packed with flavor, the carrots were delicious, and the small scallion bulbs were crunchy and sweet (though a bit too sweet, in my opinion). These veggies are an effective, but effective palette cleanser. Second most-liked was the bowl of shredded cabbage. The sesame miso dressing was very tasty. With the huge amount of cabbage, the dressing was not nearly enough. I suggest cutting back on the amount of cabbage served and keep the amount of dressing as is. If the wait staff see an excessive amount of uneaten cabbage, that may be a sign to cut back on the serving size... The wait staff were friendly and attentive. Kudos here. It is strange that my accolades principally were of the condiments and the salad, and not of the main dishes. The word "proportion" may sum it up succinctly - make the tonkatsu smaller, cut back on the amount of cabbage in the side salad to better balance the dressing with the cabbage. I actually ate here a few times when I was in the area. I ordered various variations of their Tonkatsu offerings including the regular, curry, and udon sets. There is a hirekatsu, which was supposed to be more leaner and tender cut compared to the regular tonkatsu. Unfortunately, the hirekatsu was very tough to chew compared to their regular tonkatsu and was not worth paying extra. I presume it was simply just cooked too long and it lost all the fat content on the meat. I would recommend sticking with the tonkatsu to save your wallet unless they can find a way to make it more tender. I did try their curry, tastes like a Golden Curry. As for the appetizers, they offer takoyaki, chicken skin, and oyster and shrimp, which were all solid. Presentation wise, all the food was served in a big tray, but it would have helped if the servers specified which tray the appetizers were placed on. It's easy to figure out when you're solo, but if you are with someone, you can easily mistaken it to be part of the meal and assume it never showed up. As for the ambience, it's an old Starbucks, hence the weird layout with the kitchen in the middle. The hours of their service had been weird, as they open only for dinner initially, but I realized they are now open for lunch. Overall a good place to satisfy your tonkatsu cravings. read more

M E N U We were here primarily because of the curry, but they do have each protein (Pork loin, pork tenderloin, chicken, fish, shrimp, oyster and veggie) by itself as a set or sides as well as on udon or over rice (as a don). They also have appetizers which we ended up skipping. After looking at photos as I've never heard of hirekatsu (pork tenderloin), we decided to go with the standard pork loin aka tonkatsu curry set. Not thinking too much about it, we also got the fish katsu on the side. The curry set comes with miso soup, rice, and pickled veggies. The fish katsu side was two large fish fillets and a dipping sauce. The tonkatsu was sizeable and juicy. It did have a nice trim of fat though my hubby wasn't feeling it. I like fat folks so for me it was great. I grew up having fried pork chops and the fat was the best part. The curry packed a punch. I still wish it had large chunks of potatoes or carrots but I know this is traditional style. It was very flavorful and everything I want in terms of consistency and flavor. The fish katsu was fine. The dipping sauce was delicious. It was nice and sizeable considering it was a side. We didn't realize it would be when we ordered! So we were quite full from the meal. I typically don't end up having the soup with Japanese meals but I wanted to taste this one. The miso soup was also quite flavorful. It made me want to finish it all. S E R V I C E We called in our order as we were just going to pick it up on the way from the library. They said 20-25 minutes so we ended up going to a donut shop nearby first. We arrived and it was already ready to go. So I would say err on the side of 15-20 minutes when picking up. Easily paid by card. The pork was dry, but the chicken was tender. It just felt like the quality was lacking. The curry, too salty. Hints of sweetness came from the... teriyaki? that was on top of the curry, but a lack of depth and flavor that was over shadowed by how salty the curry was made it difficult to enjoy. The cabbage was not shredded uniformly and just too thick in certain places. This consistency actually matters, but lacking here. The service was fine when you ask for assistance. During our entire stay, not once were we checked on nor our water refilled. The bathroom also had a mini flood and no one bothered to clean it up. Came here on a Saturday night in a group of 3 for early. We heard the line can be quite long so we decided to come 15 min before their dinner opening at 5:15pm. Was visiting the area for work and decided to get a to go order from Katsu Gin. The place was crowded but the server took my order and my food was ready quickly in about 10 minutes. I ordered Tonkatsu Curry. What I received was a huge piece of pork cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. The curry sauce had a little kick and perfectly paired with the pork. The rice was nicely cooked and the pickled vegetables were refreshing. The miso soup was rather mundane and didn't really add anything to the meal. With that being said, you don't come to this place for the soup. On a Saturday evening around 6 PM we had to wait roughly 30 minutes before being seated. Once arriving you can scan the QR code to put yourself in the queue. We ordered the fried tofu (appetizer), chicken katsu set, and pork katsu curry. The fried tofu was perfectly crisp without being too oily. A nice appetizer to start the meal. The set comes with cabbage, miso soup, rice, and meat of choice. The chicken was perfectly fried on the outside and tender on the inside. We were anticipated the pork to be tender but found it to be more tough and slightly dry in comparison to the chicken. I would recommend the chicken moving forward. The curry had good flavor and was excellent to eat with the meat. Service was friendly and quick. They frequently monitor the dining area to make sure all needs are being met. I came her for a group dinner and the staff was super accommodating! We had a toddler and they were very willingly able to seat us where a high chair was convenient, but we ended up not needing one. Service was solid. I got the Tonkatsu set and added fish katsu and I must say that I was very much impressed with the Fish katsu! They give you an assortment of sauces, a side salad, rice, and miso soup. The sauces worked perfectly well with the fry on the katsu and the batter on the katsu was nice and light.
