Katsu Gin is a very popular spot that focuses on crispy cutlets (ands shrimp) served with Japanese curry gravy. It gets very busy, so it helps to arrive early (even bestie they open) unless you are fine with waiting. The demand is high and the food lands well on the mark. The cutlets are satisfying and pair nicely with the curry, making for a solid, comforting meal. The shrimp is also crunchy and tasty. It may be a bit more hyped than it deserves to be, but it is still a place I enjoyed and would come back to.

Was visiting the area for work and decided to get a to go order from Katsu Gin. The place was crowded but the server took my order and my food was ready quickly in about 10 minutes. I ordered Tonkatsu Curry. What I received was a huge piece of pork cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. The curry sauce had a little kick and perfectly paired with the pork. The rice was nicely cooked and the pickled vegetables were refreshing. The miso soup was rather mundane and didn't really add anything to the meal. With that being said, you don't come to this place for the soup. I will definitely be coming back to try the other items on the menu.

What an authentic katsu spot! I had a hankering for some great katsu curry like I had in Japan, and my husband found this spot that had options for a vegetarian too! I honestly was expecting some like coco ichibanya (or hoping that it'd be close), and Katsu Gin was waaaaay better! The curry is very tasty and just the right thickness, and the katsu was freshly fried. The meat was tender and juicy, not at all dry like most chain katsus. If you want some great katsu curry, Katsu Gin is great! The atmosphere is also very calm, even with kids in the restaurant, so it's a great spot for a date or night out.

I had really high hopes for Katsu Gin, but ended up leaving incredibly disappointed. Surprised all of these high reviews. We ordered two Curry Katsu (pork and chicken). We added a side of Shrimp and Veggies. We almost added an extra bowl of rice (+$2) for our little one, but the guy, who was really nice, said that he'll make sure our rice was "large". So, let's start with the food. The Katsu was off. The batter was off. It was very greasy and flaked off in weird levels (initially very find and then mealy like). It just didn't work. The pork was dry, but the chicken was tender. It just felt like the quality was lacking. The curry, too salty. Hints of sweetness came from the... teriyaki? that was on top of the curry, but a lack of depth and flavor that was over shadowed by how salty the curry was made it difficult to enjoy. The cabbage was not shredded uniformly and just too thick in certain places. This consistency actually matters, but lacking here. The service was fine when you ask for assistance. During our entire stay, not once were we checked on nor our water refilled. The bathroom also had a mini flood and no one bothered to clean it up. It's really these little things that adds up enough for a place to not get another consideration.

Was in the mood for some katsu and curry. We went here for a family lunch on Mother's Day. We all tried different things. The kids got chicken katsu and oyster katsu and chicken skin. Adults had fish katsu and the hirekatsu. Kids demolished their food and wouldn't let me try the chicken katsu but they're picky eaters and ate everything so it must have been really good. The fish katsu was delicious and came with miso soup which was also good. Service was good and attentive. Will definitely come back again. Highly recommended.

We were in need of some lunch after visiting the library. So I was looking around the area to see if there were any new spots we haven't tried yet and I suggested a couple of spots and my hubby chose Katsu Gin. In short, delicious, plentiful, and heart warming curry and I will be back for another to-go meal. L O C A T I O N Katsu Gin is located off of N Milpitas Blvd and Calaveras Blvd. It's next to Noah's Bagels. The parking situation here is tight. There's not that many spots but luckily we found one directly in front of Noah's Bagels. I N S I D E It's not a huge spot but they do have a number of tables as well as bar seating. M E N U We were here primarily because of the curry, but they do have each protein (Pork loin, pork tenderloin, chicken, fish, shrimp, oyster and veggie) by itself as a set or sides as well as on udon or over rice (as a don). They also have appetizers which we ended up skipping. After looking at photos as I've never heard of hirekatsu (pork tenderloin), we decided to go with the standard pork loin aka tonkatsu curry set. Not thinking too much about it, we also got the fish katsu on the side. The curry set comes with miso soup, rice, and pickled veggies. The fish katsu side was two large fish fillets and a dipping sauce. The tonkatsu was sizeable and juicy. It did have a nice trim of fat though my hubby wasn't feeling it. I like fat folks so for me it was great. I grew up having fried pork chops and the fat was the best part. The curry packed a punch. I still wish it had large chunks of potatoes or carrots but I know this is traditional style. It was very flavorful and everything I want in terms of consistency and flavor. The fish katsu was fine. The dipping sauce was delicious. It was nice and sizeable considering it was a side. We didn't realize it would be when we ordered! So we were quite full from the meal. I typically don't end up having the soup with Japanese meals but I wanted to taste this one. The miso soup was also quite flavorful. It made me want to finish it all. S E R V I C E We called in our order as we were just going to pick it up on the way from the library. They said 20-25 minutes so we ended up going to a donut shop nearby first. We arrived and it was already ready to go. So I would say err on the side of 15-20 minutes when picking up. Easily paid by card. O V E R A L L I would definitely be back if I were having a curry craving. Maybe not another side of protein if we were doing it again. It was definitely enough food for two people. If you're going to eat in person, you should use the QR code to sign up for their waitlist as there were definitely people waiting outside and it was packed inside. I would likely do another to-go which was a great experience.

Service, ambience on point. Friendly, accommodating and helpful. My friend and I got the chicken katsu and shrimp/oyster katsu. Chicken katsu was very crispy, flavorful, not too burnt, and had good portions. I togo'ed a bit home as well. The food quality reminds me of when I was in Japan a few months ago! Have been here multiple times and would go again. Parking location is good. Efficient service if there's a long waitlist and they take your orders in advance.

We finally got the chance to try this restaurant with my husband and his family, and we all really enjoyed our food. They take your order before you're seated, which was a nice touch since it kept the wait time for our meals pretty short. We ordered the katsu curry along with a few donburi dishes that came with rice and egg, and everything was delicious. By the end of the night, we were definitely full and satisfied. There's a good amount of seating inside, and the staff is both friendly and efficient, which made the whole experience even better.

Gin? Like the alcohol? No--more like Jin from BTS, because this katsu spot is just as memorable (and a little polarizing) as a comeback album. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, but luckily there was no wait when we dined in. The staff were quick, efficient, and polite, and once we ordered, the food came out hot and fast--always a great sign. Let's talk about the star: the katsu. It absolutely delivers. The exterior is perfectly crispy and golden, while the inside is juicy, tender, and practically melts in your mouth. It's rich, satisfying, and easily the highlight of the meal. On the other hand, I wouldn't recommend the tamago donburi. I usually love dishes like oyako don, so I had high hopes, but this one just didn't hit the mark. Cooking the katsu in the egg ended up softening the crust and overcooking the meat, which took away everything that made the katsu so good in the first place. Great concept, just not the execution I was hoping for. Portion sizes here are very generous--honestly, one katsu plate could easily be shared between two people. Overall, even though not every dish was a hit for me, the quality of the katsu alone makes this place worth coming back to. Not everything has to be a perfect album to still have a few standout tracks--and this spot definitely has one.

Food 5/5 - Ordered tonkatsu pork-loin cutlet, which includes miso soup, cabbage salad, pickled veggies, two dipping sauces and a bowl of rice. Miso soup was good and the cabbage salad was refreshing, definitely a bigger portion than I expected once broken apart. The pork-loin cutlet was delicious. The breading was nice and crispy, and the thick-cut cutlet itself was tender and moist. Price $$ - Price is good for the portions that were served. Service 3/5 - Service is average, they made a round to refill our waters. Ambiance 4/5 - Interior is good with Japanese modern-open themed decor. Overall - Had a pleasant experience and would visit again.

Solid spot for a casual dinner. I really liked the katsu--the breading was perfectly crispy and it was a good size. The dipping sauce and the cabbage salad it came with were both great too, and I especially enjoyed all the pickled side dishes. It felt like a very complete meal. The only downside was the curry. My girlfriend ordered the curry udon, and honestly, neither of us liked it. It totally lacked flavor and just tasted like some low-end instant curry. Another highlight was the staff was very friendly and the service was extremely quick.

I'm so excited there's finally a tonkatsu place in the bay! The pictures i've seen from this place look so good and i decided to try it today. Overall, the flavor is there but the meat is just ever so slightly on the dry side and the bottom is a little bit soggy. The restaurant is pretty small and i came at the end of lunch which i believe was the only reason we were seated so quickly. I can see this place being super packed during busy hours It fulfills my cravings enough for tonkatsu but it could be better

I came on a Saturday a little bit before they opened at 5:30 and there was already a couple people waiting to come it! I'm glad that their business is booming because they truly deserve it! I got to try the Hirekatsu Curry set this time since last time I didn't like that the To katsu was thinner than the first time I went. The hirekatsu was juicy and thick so I think this will be my go to from now on instead of the Tonkatsu just because it's thicker and juicy! I didn't get the Tonkatsu this time so I can't compare it to the last time I had it. I notice they added lots of new menu items such as curry udon and rice bowls for those who enjoys those dishes! Hirekatsu Curry 5/5 I asked for my curry to be on the side this time and it was perfect along with a side of cabbage salad! I didn't not have a soggy katsu after eating! I also noticed they now place the katsu on the rice instead of half and half on the curry and rice which helps a lot with the texture! my boyfriend ordered the set normal and everything was still crispy! Oyster and Shrimp Tempura : 5/5 shrimp was crispy and the oyster was yummy! it also comes with an side of cabbage as well! I think they have gotten the hang of things since they opened! Food comes out at a good pace and the staff are very friendly and attentive! I will definitely be recommending this to those who love a katsu that reminds me of the one I had in Japan and Hawaii! Thick and Juicy with crispy fluffy crust! I believe the main focus of the restaurant is the katsu rather than "katsu curry" which is fine with me because I come here to eat crispy juicy katsu and everything else is just a plus! I really like the way they fry and do their katsu here. for the affordable price you pay, the meal was delicious!

I'm going to be totally honest, I was just expecting an average bowl of curry but boy was I wrong... 5/5! The food came out piping hot, to-go style, in white plastic containers. The shrimp was golden, light, crispy, and tender. The potato croquette was super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I was amazed that none of the fried items were greasy whatsoever. The curry was thick, hearty, comforting and had a slight kick of spice. Accompanied with a mound of steamy, white rice, this dish was delicious and the portions very generous! The miso soup was light, umami, and broth-y. It really helped to cut the richness of the curry and fried items. There was this person visiting someone who worked there, I think she was a nurse who worked nearby, who was chatting with her friend (the other server) at such a volume I wonder if the nurse lady knew that inside voices were even an option. That was a little distracting but I don't blame my server for that. I don't care if employees at places want to chat, that's fine. Just be aware of the volume. Overall I'm very glad I went here and the food was delicious.
