Was visiting the area for work and decided to get a to go order from Katsu Gin. The place was crowded but the server took my order and my food was ready quickly in about 10 minutes. I ordered Tonkatsu Curry. What I received was a huge piece of pork cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. The curry sauce had a little kick and perfectly paired with the pork. The rice was nicely cooked and the pickled vegetables were refreshing. What an authentic katsu spot! I had a hankering for some great katsu curry like I had in Japan, and my husband found this spot that had options for a vegetarian too! So, let's start with the food. The Katsu was off. The batter was off. It was very greasy and flaked off in weird levels (initially very find and then mealy like). It just didn't work. The pork was dry, but the chicken was tender. It just felt like the quality was lacking. The curry, too salty. Hints of sweetness came from the... teriyaki? that was on top of the curry, but a lack of depth and flavor that was over shadowed by how salty the curry was made it difficult to enjoy. The cabbage was not shredded uniformly and just too thick in certain places. This consistency actually matters, but lacking here. The service was fine when you ask for assistance. During our entire stay, not once were we checked on nor our water refilled. The bathroom also had a mini flood and no one bothered to clean it up. M E N U We were here primarily because of the curry, but they do have each protein (Pork loin, pork tenderloin, chicken, fish, shrimp, oyster and veggie) by itself as a set or sides as well as on udon or over rice (as a don). They also have appetizers which we ended up skipping. After looking at photos as I've never heard of hirekatsu (pork tenderloin), we decided to go with the standard pork loin aka tonkatsu curry set. The menu has a few pork cuts for your katsu as well as a curry variant of the same option. These all come over rice with a side shredded cabbage you'd typically see in Japan. I got the Hirekatsu with Curry option. The was a bit more "plump" than what you'd typically see with Katsu. It could just be mine but it quite dry and tough rather than juicy. Demiya offers a thinner cut of katsu as well as spice level variety of curry and add ons. Otherwise, the service is pretty normal. So good I came twice in a week! A little busy even on weekday nights (as they should be!), but food comes out pretty fast so I only had to wait about 15 minutes for a party of 3. The hire katsu had thick and big cuts of meat which is great if you want lots of protein. The tonkatsu was more tender and balanced more evenly with breading than the hire. Between the hire and tonkatsu, the only big difference was how thick the meats were. The three katsu meats in general were a little too oily for my taste, but on the bright side, the portions were pretty big. The curry felt a little fatty paired with the fried katsu. However, the pickled onion was great! I loved the acidity of it paired with the fattiness of the dish. Overall, if you like katsu, you will like this place. I really enjoyed my first time here. Luckily a few individuals from my party had queued up earlier so I didn't have to wait too long. This place gets busy so try to go near when they open or transition times from lunch to dinner. I'm impressed with the amount of food as well as the cook on the proteins. I definitely felt like I got my money's worth. I ended up getting the fried fish katsu. The batter on the fish was good, but the meat itself was very lightly seasoned. Depends on your take, but I could see how some may perceive it to be a little lack luster. For me, it was deliberately served with 3 sauces. I got to curate my bites and it wasn't monotonous. I also felt better since I was consuming less sodium. You also got a miso soup, cabbage salad, rice, and pickled veggies served in a small sauce dish. I definitely want to try the other proteins out. The wait was a bit long because we went around 6:30pm on a Thursday/holiday and had a larger party. Staff was nice and accommodating. Even my grandparents liked it! I like Japanese curry, this one reminds me of the flavor of golden curry. So filling! The parking situations tight so make sure you give yourself some time to find a spot. Located near City Hall, I'm sure a lot of workers are regulars. Came in around 12:20pm and thought it was going to be busy; but it wasn't. It wasn't until I had gotten seated, the place really started getting customers through the door so I'm glad came when I did. I didn't know what the difference was from their regular Katsu and Mira Katsu so I asked the server and she mentioned it was their signature and it's what they're know for since it was a darker cut of the pork. It comes with miso soup, salad and a variety of pickled veggies. Wasn't sure how it was supposed to be eaten but I do know the little onion was my favorite after a bite of katsu. The platter comes with 4 katsu's over a wire rack so that the meat won't get soggy and it could breath. They give you the option to size up your rice but I know that would've filled me up so I stuck to the regular serving and focused on the included salad and it brings a nice crisp and freshness to the already deep fried item. My go-to order at Katsu Gin is their chicken katsu set. I definitely love the cabbage and the way they bread their katsu here. It reminds me of the way they do it in Japan. I also like how the rice is fluffy. Unfortunately, they were out of chicken skin so I had to come back another time. The service here is a 5/5. My friend and I came here before closing and they didn't make us feel rushed. My second time here was with a party of 4 and it was pretty busy on a Sunday night. We waited outside and shout out to one of the staff his hospitality for turning on their patio heater for us! This time I came in the evening and the staff told us they were out of chicken skin, but he recommended these mini fried tofus that weren't on the menu and I have to say, it was good, but we weren't craving it as much as the chicken skin. I did have to wait nearly 10 minutes for my food to come out while my friends were almost done eating. It was a disappointment to find out that the party that sat next to us minutes after we sat, were able to order chicken skin. At this point I felt like they were being selective, but that's just how I felt. They could have informed us that it's back on the menu. Overall, I only come here for the convenience of how close it is from home, but they can improve on consistency of what's available on the menu. I do hope they add desserts on the menu or something unique like Gyukatsu in the future because this restaurant has a lot of potential for growth. Weekday lunch was not busy when we arrived by 12. My party had the gyoza appetizer and the hire tonkatsu curry set. I'm not sure if it's cause I've had tried a good amount of curry restaurants, but this one just didn't stick out for me. The katsu itself was larger than most I've had at other places, but maybe because of that, it was a bit on the dry and chewier side. Katsu sets are taking over the world! OVERALL: I don't know if it's because I have had the privilege of trying katsu sets around the world (including Japan) or what, but this place was not great, at all.
