Finally found a great Japanese katsu joint in the Bay Area. Reminded me of being back in Japan. The sets are great options. I recommend asking for the curry on the side so that your katsu doesn't get all soggy during your meal. Service was also solid as well. Really can't complain honestly. Upon recommendation by a friend, we came here to eat. I had wanted to like this place, but It's the little things that bother me here, though there definitely were some highlights. And if some changes are made, it may be better. We ordered the Tonkatsu Curry set, the Kirekatsu set, and the Udon w/ curry set. The commonality of the three dishes were the three huge "bricks" of tonkatsu. Though they were awesomely juicy and had a nice crunch to the coating, they lacked flavor. I believe this is due to the shear size of the tenderloin (each one would constitute one serving of meat.) Even with tonkatsu sauce (very sparsely drizzled), the flavor was lacking. I prefer the bite-sized cuts instead. Perhaps the most frustrating is the weight of each brick made it a challenge to hold with chopsticks (in all fairness, they did provide a fork . . .). And twice I dropped the brick into my bowl of udon, splashing the curry broth everywhere. Grrrrr! The curry had a spicy kick at the start, but then . . . Mixed feelings. Difficult to describe, but it seems that there was an emphasis more on the spiciness, but not much on flavor? For me, the blend was not balanced. That is what each of us felt. The curry sauce for the udon was nice, however and did not overpower the noodles. The highlights were the pickled carrots and scallion bulbs - outstanding!And they were my favorite item of the entire meal! Very crunchy and packed with flavor, the carrots were delicious, and the small scallion bulbs were crunchy and sweet (though a bit too sweet, in my opinion). These veggies are an effective, but effective palette cleanser. Second most-liked was the bowl of shredded cabbage. The sesame miso dressing was very tasty. With the huge amount of cabbage, the dressing was not nearly enough. I suggest cutting back on the amount of cabbage served and keep the amount of dressing as is. If the wait staff see an excessive amount of uneaten cabbage, that may be a sign to cut back on the serving size... The wait staff were friendly and attentive. Kudos here. It is strange that my accolades principally were of the condiments and the salad, and not of the main dishes. The word "proportion" may sum it up succinctly - make the tonkatsu smaller, cut back on the amount of cabbage in the side salad to better balance the dressing with the cabbage. We've been wanting to try this place for a while and when we finally did, we were pleasantly surprised. I ordered the chicken katsu set and it was super filling. The salad was super yummy, but the chicken katsu was better than I expected. The flaky panko breadcrumbs were just right and didn't make it to heavy; it was actually light. We were served by a young man who was really helpful and attentive. He did a really good job with giving advice and recommendations. He made sure that we were good with our meal and our water was filled. The ambiance of the restaurant was different. Mind you, I remember it being a Starbucks and the way they restructured it made it seem bigger and spacious. A friend and I came for dinner and I was surprised to see all the tables full. We were seated at the bar. The service was good, my friend and I were busy chatting and didn't have a chance to look at the menu but the server was kind and gave us a few more minutes to review before coming back for our order. I had really high hopes for Katsu Gin, but ended up leaving incredibly disappointed. Surprised all of these high reviews. We ordered two Curry Katsu (pork and chicken). We added a side of Shrimp and Veggies. We almost added an extra bowl of rice (+$2) for our little one, but the guy, who was really nice, said that he'll make sure our rice was "large". So, let's start with the food. The Katsu was off. The batter was off. It was very greasy and flaked off in weird levels (initially very find and then mealy like). It just didn't work. The pork was dry, but the chicken was tender. It just felt like the quality was lacking. The curry, too salty. Hints of sweetness came from the... teriyaki? that was on top of the curry, but a lack of depth and flavor that was over shadowed by how salty the curry was made it difficult to enjoy. The cabbage was not shredded uniformly and just too thick in certain places. This consistency actually matters, but lacking here. The service was fine when you ask for assistance. During our entire stay, not once were we checked on nor our water refilled. The bathroom also had a mini flood and no one bothered to clean it up. There's not that many spots but luckily we found one directly in front of Noah's Bagels. I N S I D E It's not a huge spot but they do have a number of tables as well as bar seating. M E N U We were here primarily because of the curry, but they do have each protein (Pork loin, pork tenderloin, chicken, fish, shrimp, oyster and veggie) by itself as a set or sides as well as on udon or over rice (as a don). They also have appetizers which we ended up skipping. After looking at photos as I've never heard of hirekatsu (pork tenderloin), we decided to go with the standard pork loin aka tonkatsu curry set. Not thinking too much about it, we also got the fish katsu on the side. The curry set comes with miso soup, rice, and pickled veggies. The fish katsu side was two large fish fillets and a dipping sauce. The tonkatsu was sizeable and juicy. It did have a nice trim of fat though my hubby wasn't feeling it. I like fat folks so for me it was great. I grew up having fried pork chops and the fat was the best part. The curry packed a punch. I still wish it had large chunks of potatoes or carrots but I know this is traditional style. It was very flavorful and everything I want in terms of consistency and flavor. The fish katsu was fine. The dipping sauce was delicious. It was nice and sizeable considering it was a side. We didn't realize it would be when we ordered! So we were quite full from the meal. I typically don't end up having the soup with Japanese meals but I wanted to taste this one. The miso soup was also quite flavorful. It made me want to finish it all. S E R V I C E We called in our order as we were just going to pick it up on the way from the library. They said 20-25 minutes so we ended up going to a donut shop nearby first. We arrived and it was already ready to go. So I would say err on the side of 15-20 minutes when picking up. Easily paid by card. So good I came twice in a week! A little busy even on weekday nights (as they should be!), but food comes out pretty fast so I only had to wait about 15 minutes for a party of 3. Oyster & shrimp katsu appetizer - You get two shrimps and two oysters, I found the oysters very slightly fishy. Shrimp is pretty good, but I think I prefer a tempura style batter rather than the katsu style, so maybe not for me. Fish katsu set - this one comes with its own slightly citrusy shoyu sauce in addition to the normal katsu sauces that come with all the other sets. This shoyu was so good and paired perfectly with the fish - my family even dipped their chicken and pork in it! The fish itself was slightly inconsistent in fillet size, so the thickest piece came out perfectly cooked, but the thinnest piece was a little dry. The cabbage under the katsu sets also come lightly dressed with a sesame sauce - you can ask for more dressing if you want it! Not a particularly large restaurant and it seems pretty popular. I went on a Saturday afternoon and there were a few people waiting in line to dine in. I ordered the Tonkatsu Set. It came with thick chunks of pork katsu, salad, rice, sauce, and miso soup. The pork was wonderfully fried and not dry. While already delicious by itself, the sauce added a tanginess that elevated the flavor. I'd rate this meal an 8/10. Pork was delicious. Salad was fresh and everything paired well together. Miso soup was solid as well and didn't skimp on the tofu like some other places. My total came out to be about $20, which I think is worth it by Bay Area pricing standards. Came with a friend on a Saturday around 1:30pm and Katsu Gin was very busy. They use a QR code waitlist posted by the entrance. Located in a large shopping plaza, parking was easy and we walked around while waiting. We were quoted 30-45 minutes but only waited about 20. Service was efficient and friendly, and food came out within 10-15 minutes after ordering. The space was clean, modern, and I liked the open-kitchen concept. Folks here love their tonkatsu curry! Came on Friday at noon and there was about a 20 min wait for our 5 person group. The restaurant is small with either 2 or 4 person tables, part of the reason why we had to wait for our table. I'd say this place can seat no more than 50 people. The service was great as the restaurant manager tried to seat us as soon as he could given the place was packed. He noted a large table becoming available soon so he went ahead and offered to take our orders first so that the food would be ready by the time we were seated. He was right about that - we don't have to wait long at all before our food came. The menu offering is what you would expect: katsu with or without curry, and katsu don (with rice / egg) as well. Our party ordered pork cutlet, chicken, and fish (rock cod) katsu with curry to try a bit of everything. They were all delicious with the right amount of breading on each. The pork cutlet was juicy and flavorful and is my recommendation if you can't decide what to try. I liked the curry as well, thick with a bit of a kick; I like having something to dip the katsu into. Also, the rice here would cooked so well - carbs are my weakness - and I really appreciate rice that comes out perfectly. This is a hearty meal, generous portion, at $20 a plate. It comes with a side of miso soup and small side of pickled vegetables. Other reviews talk about the meat coming out not as hot as they expect - I imagine that the kitchen staff do let the freshly fried meat cool off a bit but it really didn't take away from the experience and the breading was still very crunchy.
