    Order kiosk

Wanted to try this place for a while now, but they're closed last time we're here. Finally got to try it on Thursday night for an early dinner, before watching a movie at the California Theater. Ordering from the kiosk was easy, and the food was ready pretty quickly. We ate at the long communal table right in front of JapaCurry. I had high expectations because of their high ratings, but was quite disappointed with my mediocre chicken katsu curry plate. While the sauce was hot, the chicken katsu wasn't. It tasted like the chicken had been cooked for a long time. Portion size was not bad, with quite a lot of chicken. Flavor was just ok. Not something I would recommend.

    TonKatsu (Pork) Curry ($18.50)

In a Curry Food stall located in the SoFA Market, which is an indoor food and drink hall in DTSJ. JapaCurry started out as a catering company in 2023, and opened this location early last year (2025). I first saw the Chef at JapaCurry being interviewed by a local news station** talking about his food and I became very interested in their authentic flavors. The Good: *They also have a pickup location in Santa Clara with new locations coming soon. *Still do catering *Dog-friendly covered outdoor dining *Easy kiosk ordering and paying *Minimal interaction with the staff, but it was all very cordial and pleasant. *Ordered the Tonkatsu (Pork) Curry and I was very impressed with the crispy, extra thiccc cut of tender pork. The curry itself was also quite good, and had a nice spicy kick at the end which was nice. The concomitant, and traditional, rice and red pickles (aka Fukujinzuke) made for a nice meal overall. *Pricing is pretty reasonable for around $16-19 for a nice sized lunch that gets you full, but not so much that you're comatose. The Meh: *They're a little stingy with the Curry itself. There is an option for "Extra Curry Sauce" for $4, if you absolutely need it. *Shared seating means you might have to share a table with *gasp* strangers. It's not ideal but it is what it is. *No alcohol but some of the other vendors inside the SoFA do. The Ugly: *Unless you come on a Sunday, then you're most likely going to have to pay for parking. Conclusion: Not my favorite Japanese Curry, but it's definitely up there. **I'm not 100% on the news station part, but I definitely saw an interview somewhere. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Katsu Chicken Curry

Best rated food booth in this hall. Several closed restaurants. Seating available inside and out. Order at kiosk and pay electronically. Food (chicken) is precooked and kept in a heating cabinet. Curry has excellent flavor. Breading in chicken is good and the chicken portion was decent with good white meat. Not bad for prepped food. Would eat here again.

I bought a too good to go surprise bag and though they should use it as means to advertise I was disappointed. The end pieces of the chicken on the Katsu was dry and the curry sauce was not what I expected. Curry is normally quite flavorful-this fell short. I did enjoy the veggies, however. Very fresh and tasty. The gentleman who packed my bag was surprised and didn't have it ready. It's in a shared restaurant setting, like a food court, so you can dine in, but the restaurant alone is take-out.

[Food] - Tonkatsu Curry ($18.50): Love the flavorful tomato/beef based curry! Definitely not like the average Japanese restaurant curry! Rice (fluffy) & moist) and tonkatsu (fatty but a bit overcooked) were plentiful, but the curry portions just weren't the same ratio as the rice and tonkatsu overall. I appreciate that the curry includes some vegetables (carrots, potatoes, spinach) without paying more. So depending on your preferences this could be a hit or miss but I still can overlook everything just for the curry. You can also get extra curry sauce ($4) - Fried Tofu ($4.50 for 4 pieces): A bit bland, but of course delicious with curry sauce or even sriracha. I have to admit that the price is pretty steep for 4 pieces. I would personally skip this next time. [Service] - Helpful, friendly, attentive [Ambiance] - Small mom and pop shop at DTSJ in SoFA Market [Overall] - Would come back again as there aren't many places that serve a more flavorful tomato/beef based curry. Most Japanese restaurant serve more of a store bought Japanese curry flavor (beef/potato) flavor.

My friends, wife, and I checked out JapaCurry. Unfortunately, we arrived later in the day around 2pm, and a lot of their entrees were already "sold out" like their tonkatsu and karaage. My friend ordered the Pork Belly (Kakuni) Curry. Thick, Rich, "beefy" flavorful, and soothing curry. Nothing is as comforting and enjoyable as a bowl of curry rice. The pork belly was tender and soft. The rice was fluffy and soaked up all the curry goodness. Served with cabbage to give added texture and to help cut the richness or spice. Also fukujinzuke which is a must when eating Japanese curry! We'll be back! Support your local business!

JapaCurry offers a decent option for Japanese curry fans in downtown San Jose, but my visit left me feeling a bit underwhelmed, especially considering the price. While the curry flavor itself was good, a few elements of the dish and the overall experience could have been better. What I had: - GyuCurry (stewed beef) - Added shredded cheese - Added marinated egg The curry itself had a solid flavor -- rich and comforting without being too heavy. However, the stewed beef was just alright; it didn't have the melt-in-your-mouth tenderness I was hoping for. It's possible I ordered the wrong protein since, unfortunately, the more popular options like karaage, tonkatsu, and chicken katsu were sold out by the time I arrived :-(( The shredded cheese felt like an afterthought -- simply sprinkled on top without being melted into the dish, similar to how Chipotle tops their bowls. I had expected a gooier, richer texture. Like if you've ever been to kbbq restaurants and they have melted cheese over the meats- yeah that's somewhat what I was expecting. As for the marinated egg, it tasted fine but didn't really have the depth of flavor that a good marinated egg usually offers. Considering I paid close to $30 for the bowl with toppings, I found the protein portion and topping quality a little disappointing for the price. JapaCurry is part of the SoFa Market food hall, which has a casual and lively atmosphere. Seating is communal-style, meaning you'll likely be sitting close to strangers at shared tables. Finding a spot can be a bit hit-or-miss depending on the time of day. Parking downtown can be tricky, but there are nearby paid lots and some street parking if you're willing to circle around. Service was quick and no-frills -- order at the counter and wait for your food to be called! TLDR: Overall, while I liked the curry flavor, the value and toppings didn't quite justify the price for me. I might consider giving JapaCurry another try earlier in the day when more proteins are available, but this visit was just okay. I give JapaCurry a 3/5. I hate to rate small businesses and mom/pop shops harshly but I feel like this was just satisfactory overall. Hoping that if I come back and try one of the sold out meats, my rating would be alot higher! How I rate on Yelp: (5 stars): Exceptional!! -- food, service, and atmosphere all outstanding. Worth going out of your way. (4 stars): Great! -- very good experience overall, minor flaws but nothing major. (3 stars): Good -- decent, acceptable, but there's room for clear improvement. (2 stars): Poor -- disappointing experience, multiple issues (food, service, or setting). (1 star): Terrible -- very bad experience, would not return or recommend.

    Chicken katsu curry udon

Ordered the chicken katsu curry udon to go, the chicken was soggy and bland, the udon noodle was decent. Also ordered the potato croquette which was also soggy and greasy. Maybe this is not the place for to-go orders.

Natto green onion curry with fried tofu
    Minah L.

Wanted to try their potato croquette curry but it wasn't available so we went with their natto green onion curry with a side of fried tofu. I've never had natto in curry before but it was a tasty addition with very little fermentation flavor. The curry itself was flavorful and light. The tofu was soft and perfectly fried and helped complete the meal and make it more filling. I'll be back to this stall to try their potato croquette curry next!

The customer service was awesome. It made the food taste better. Added some spice seasoning that took my food to a great level.

This place reminded me of a curry place inside of a kyoto train station so good! The smell took me back to Japan. Love the ordering kiosk as well, also like being back in japan. Food came out super fast. We will definitely be back!

Located in the SoFa market. Lots of seating with other restaurants inside. Came around 5:30pm on a Saturday and there was no line. The staff was super nice and my order was ready in 5 minutes after ordering! I got the Potato Croquette Curry ($15.00) and it was really good! The croquette was pillowy soft, the curry was good, and the ratio of rice to curry sauce was perfect for me. The shredded cabbage and pickled red things were a nice touch too. My other 3 friends also really liked what they got. Super fast, nice staff, super convenient in the area of downtown SJ and menu was so small that it was not overwhelming with choices. I love that! Would come again if I'm in the area and craving Japanese curry!

    Karaage curry
    Rossewidge ..

Nearly $20 with tip--after paying for metered street parking -- to get this karaage (fried chicken) curry plate and the chicken was SOGGY exactly like it was microwaved from frozen. Not to mention the rice was overcooked. The curry itself was the only edible thing. Why bother running a restaurant with this level of disrespect for the food and your customers? I want so little out of life and this completely ruined my day

I had my eye on the sandos, specifically the Chicken Katsu Sando, but landed on the Spicy Tuna Don instead. Good call. Spicy yellowfin tuna tartare over well-seasoned sushi rice, topped with sesame, furikake, green onions, with a little radish and cucumber on the side. The tuna was very fresh, the rice was on point. Service was quick and polite - they even have an outside window for takeout. One nice detail: a neat dollop of wasabi is pasted along the inside wall of the bowl, which is a clean way of letting you control exactly how much heat you want to mix in. Tasteful presentation, but don't let that fool you. It has a legitimate kick, so calibrate accordingly. Paired it with their Honjozo dry sake cup, which was a nice complement to the meal and exactly the right call for a mid-afternoon bite. The sandos looked great on other tables and I fully intend to go back for the Chicken Katsu Sando - and then go try the wine bar next door to it. which was pretty tempting.

I want to preface that this restaurant is simple, no frills, and looks a little outdated when you walk in. However, the service was very friendly and the menu is pretty extensive! This location offers Japanese-style curry dishes from chicken katsu curry to fried fish curry and even offers vegetarian curry dishes as well. I also love that you can pick from a list of toppings to add to your curry. Not to mention, you can choose the spice level of your curry. Volcano offers a spice level of 1 (mild) - 4 (volcano). I ordered the fried shrimp curry with the addition of a potato croquette, spice level 2 (medium). I was STARVING and was tempted to add more toppings but didn't want to go too crazy so I could enjoy the curry itself! I also ordered a cup of miso soup on the side. I'm going to be totally honest, I was just expecting an average bowl of curry but boy was I wrong... 5/5! The food came out piping hot, to-go style, in white plastic containers. The shrimp was golden, light, crispy, and tender. The potato croquette was super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I was amazed that none of the fried items were greasy whatsoever. The curry was thick, hearty, comforting and had a slight kick of spice. Accompanied with a mound of steamy, white rice, this dish was delicious and the portions very generous! The miso soup was light, umami, and broth-y. It really helped to cut the richness of the curry and fried items. I'm so happy I got to try this place and will be back to try their katsu sandos next time!

It has almost a thick gravy like texture and often is dark brown in color. I've had Japanese curry in Japan as well as around the SF bay area and I would say the japanese curry here is average at best. The texture is a little lumpy to be honest and there isn't a tremendous amount of curry flavor. Today, we ordered a couple of items off the special menu - Kaki Curry (oysters) and Shiso Mentaiko Cream Spaghetti. The Kaki Curry came with six fried oysters, some rice, potato salad, and a dab of sauce for the fried oysters. The fried oysters were fresh and crunchy. Overall, it was satisfying but nothing spectacular. The Shiso Mentaiko Cream Spaghetti is a cream sauce based pasta dish with roe, shiso leaves, and nori seaweed. It's an interesting twist to your popular spaghetti dish so the flavor profiles were interesting. The dish was creamy and the nori and roe brought some unami flavor. Between the two dishes, I enjoyed this one slightly more even those this place is a "curry" spot. Dish comes with a japanese cabbage salad and miso soup which tasted pretty standard.

The food took some time, even though we were the only party at the time that we ordered, but you can tell that it is made of fresh and with love. As someone who enjoys eating flavorful meals, but is also very conscious of healthy choices, I was very grateful that they had grilled chicken curry option since it normally comes fried only, and that you could opt for brown rice instead of white rice. My chicken curry dish was so hearty and flavorful, the curry is housemade and the chicken was very tender We also ordered a chicken Katsu Bento, which was both juicy yet perfectly crisp. It comes with a little bite of soba noodles and a bite of macaroni and that small salad . Order at the counter , and there's a handful of indoor tables The tonkotsu ramen was also delicious - came with two super huge slabs of juicy pork belly and the broth was scrumptiously rich . Glad we ended up here for lunch !

It was kind of difficult already with my husbands crutches. A wheelchair could be possible if they sit you at the very front entrance. There's anime on the shelves if you want to read and relax. Love that they had a warning that some of them may not be suitable for kids. They don't split bills, so heads up if you're going with multiple people. Our boys really liked their curry and katsu. They were able to make it not really spicy and it was just right for them. Napolitan was so good. The serving size was just right. At first I thought it might be too big, but because it was so good, I scarfed that thing down. This will definitely be our spot to go back to when we're in Japantown.

This was one of those places that I always passed and would think to myself "I need to stop there one of these days." Well I finally did and it was quite good. The curry I got would have been the perfect level of spice for my wife, who's fully white, but next time I think I'll go up a level or two. It was still good and full of great flavor, but I expected a bit more from the level of spiciness I got. The young guy that was helping me was very nice and attentive. There was this person visiting someone who worked there, I think she was a nurse who worked nearby, who was chatting with her friend (the other server) at such a volume I wonder if the nurse lady knew that inside voices were even an option. That was a little distracting but I don't blame my server for that. I don't care if employees at places want to chat, that's fine. Just be aware of the volume. Overall I'm very glad I went here and the food was delicious.
