Tonkatsu Curry Rice Plate with Ebi Fry Prawn
    Mike L.

When I heard about Nippon Curry for the very first time, I knew it was just a matter of "when", not "if", I'd eventually make my way here. Any spot that specializes in Japanese curry will pique my curiosity, but it was especially true in this case. However, between how long the line was and how uneven some of their early reviews were, I figured I'd just wait until some of the buzz had died down (plus, I still wasn't eating out much at the time anyways). Fast forward and I'm so glad to have finally made my way here! Even despite how the food didn't quite live up to what I had hoped for... While Nippon Curry is the name they go by now, this place originally bore the same name as the popular Hinoya Curry chain in Japan. Not sure why it changed (perhaps due to SF's restrictions on chains?), but, regardless of the reason, the most important thing is that Hinoya's curry is still what's being served. Which is no small detail considering how almost the entire menu is made up of curry rice plates and whatever fried goodies and sides/toppings you want to add to your dish. Kind of limited to a certain degree, but, even though if it's far from a guarantee, it's usually a good sign when a place focuses and specializes so heavily on just one thing! -- CHICKEN KATSU CURRY RICE PLATE with AJI FISH FRY (+$4)...$17 I was most hopeful for these and they were great! The Chicken Katsu was juicy and relatively crispy while the curry had a nice beefiness. I also enjoyed the Aji Fish Fry, but, at $4 for one piece, it felt a little light for the money, even if the overall portion size wasn't terrible. -- TONKATSU CURRY RICE PLATE with EBI FRY PRAWN (+$3)...$17 Comparatively, this was a little underwhelming. Although the pork was decently moist, the cutlet seemed smaller and didn't seem as flavorful as the Chicken Katsu. Thankfully, the curry was just as good, but the Ebi Fry Prawn was terrible - small and tasteless. Beyond the food, I appreciate how friendly the workers were, but one fellow, in particular, could probably use some additional training. Not that it was a big deal, but, the first time I was here, he tried to clear my friend's plate while he was still eating (to be fair, he had just one or two bites left). The second time, though, we saw the same guy cleaning tables by picking up grains of rice with one hand and then using the other to wipe the table. No gloves, no towel - just his bare hand. I don't typically do it anyways, but it's safe to say we didn't eat any of the food that fell off our plates onto the table. All told, despite how Nippon Curry didn't quite live up to the hype and my high hopes for them, I'd be lying if I said they entirely missed the mark either. Aside from that one worker, everything else about my visits has been decent enough and they're a decent option for the area (I don't usually associate Japanese curry with the Marina). While I certainly wouldn't make a point of driving out here again (I'd rather head to Curry Hyuga in Burlingame), I wouldn't be staunchly opposed to coming back if I was already out here. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down.

Came here for a late Sunday afternoon lunch and there was plenty of seating. We ordered the pork katsu curry, Kani cream Croquette curry, and a side of Ebi Fry. Each curry came with a side of Fukujinzuke and 1 pickled pearl onion. The katsu was nice and crunchy and pork was good. The kani cream Croquette had a crunchy later with a creamy oozy filling that went well with the curry. The curry and rice is perfect. I kind of wish you can order it spicy though but there are chilli flakes you can add on the side. The curry itself is not spicy at all. The portions aren't too big so it was a light lunch. Overall very tasty curry.

Yummy curry! The place is super clean, ample of seating space. Weekend lunch was great, order, sat down, and order came in less than 15 minutes. Order a pork katsu curry ($17 w/out tip and tax). The curry portion was plenty for 2 people to share. The katsu was super crunchy, tender pork as well. Curry was a thick layer filled with great flavor, good spice ratio of cumin, turmeric, coriander, ginger, and I think pepper. To add some spice, near the water area are spice powder and crunchy bits. In addition to the curry plates, there is sandos, croquettes, and tempura items. Overall, solid option for food in the Marina.

i stumbled upon nippon curry and was pleasantly surprised!! the chicken katsu curry was perfectly cooked, well cooked interior but crunchy and crispy exterior, draped in the most delicious curry! the red pickles were also delightful. service was friendly and fast - order in the front and your food is brought out. there are a few tables inside to sit and enjoy. i highly recommend nippon curry and will be back!

Favorite Kyoto style curry in the city, without question. Fast (as it should be, sub-five minutes), comforting, savory, umami-rich stews, equally filling portions of our usual pork or chicken katsu on top (love that their take out containers are custom designed to elevate the katsu above the stew but also allow steam to emanate upwards, genius) and spot-on rice both in terms of flavor and consistency. Love the side dish croquettes especially potato and oyster. Usually order an extra side of pickled bits and bobs. PS thank you for saving us during the Great PG&E Substation Fire Blackout of '25 and a) having power, b) double orders of katsu and croquettes that got us through that first night (new addition and all), and c) making a very memorable one month birthday dinner for us by candlelight.

Nippon Curry dam straight! I haven't had curry this good since I was in Japan! I seriously like this place. I was hesitant to try with a cheesey name like this, but trust me it's solid! I got the pork katsu and usually it's pretty chewy, thick to bite into, and not a strong flavor. But with my first bite of it here, it was like BAM! Solid buttery curry flavors all around. And the pork katsu was cooked to perfection. Very light and crispy, I couldn't believe I was eating a pork katsu! I need a Nippon Curry in the East Bay!!

Great curry spot! Fast service and delicious, filling food. Initially, it looked like a lot but there was a thin layer of rice underneath. I also liked how they brought the food directly to me as I sat inside. Convenient spot for tasty, quick food!

Ordered Delivery for lunch. Noticed they a lunch item I had never seen before called Popeye curry with pork and spinach. I've had Nippon a number of times and it's probably my favorite Japanese curry spot in the city so I already knew the pork Katsu and curry would be great, but I love the addition of the spinach for the added veggies. The delivery came package separately. In the main bowl vessel was the curry itself, topped with spinach, and then in a separate divider was the Katsu and the pickled veggie. I appreciate this as it prevents the crispy Katsu from getting soggy. The Katsu meat was juicy and textually, perfect especially for a delivery order. The curry was packed with flavor and included elements of heat and sweetness. The whole dish makes for a very filling and comforting lunch.

I came to Nippon Curry to grab dinner after a work meeting. I love Japanese curry, and I wanted to try a place with it while I was in the city for work. The space itself is in the Marina and is very popular. It took a while to order because they were dealing with TONS of orders, mostly online from what I could tell. It took me ~10-20 minutes to order and get my food for dining in...I didn't really mind but just an FYI if you plan on eating in person. I ordered the spinach and cheese curry from their veggie menu. It was delicious -- no notes. The cheese added a lot of richness to curry that I wasn't expecting (and I prob wouldn't order it again because it was maybe too decadent) but man was it good. Maybe some of the best curry I've had in the bay. Go here!!

    Pork Katsu Curry

Food is consistently good and heartwarming. I live in this neighborhood and would come here whenever i needed a pick me up. My favorite is the pork katsu. It's on the thinner side and sometimes a little overcooked hence the 4* but usually just excellent. Lots of big tables, easy to seat groups big or small. Also good for eating alone. Staff is friendly, place is clean and good comes out promptly.

Stopped by Nippon Curry SF for a quick dinner with friends recently and it was a pretty good experience. The restaurant is centrally located and there's a cashier/ordering counter to the left side once you walk in. The menu is displayed right next to the cashier, and you can choose from multiple entrees and appetizers. I opted to order the chicken katsu curry plate and requested the curry on the side, since I was a bit nervous about the flavor and level of spice. Customer service was friendly and efficient, and we received our dishes pretty quickly. The restaurant wasn't too busy when we went and they had several open tables with seating. I enjoyed my dish overall, the chicken wasn't dry and the breading was adequate and crispy. I used the curry sauce for dipping and thought the flavor was good. The curry itself had a little kick to it, but I still liked the flavor. Pricing for each dish was a bit higher than expected, especially for the fried clam version, which seemed to be a less preferred option. Parking can be limited as the restaurant is in the Marina, but there are a few parking structures within walking distance. Overall, a solid spot for Japanese curry and may be a worthwhile spot if you're wanting comfort food.

I remember coming to this spot when it was a previous curry restaurant but Nippon Curry also offers very similar Japanese curry which hit the spot. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. Our food came pretty quickly within 5-10 minutes of sitting down. You can order sides or extras along with your entree dish which include potato croquette or extra meat. I ordered the pork katsu curry ($17) which came covered with curry sauce and a lot of meat, so overall pretty good portion of food for the amount you pay. The curry flavor was great with a hint of spice, and the meat was very tender. Overall a solid spot for Japanese curry and if you need a quick bite to eat or a takeout option. Parking can be a little tough around the Marina district but there's some streets with ample parking spots a couple blocks away from the restaurant.

I was STARVING and was tempted to add more toppings but didn't want to go too crazy so I could enjoy the curry itself! I also ordered a cup of miso soup on the side. I'm going to be totally honest, I was just expecting an average bowl of curry but boy was I wrong... 5/5! The food came out piping hot, to-go style, in white plastic containers. I had my eye on the sandos, specifically the Chicken Katsu Sando, but landed on the Spicy Tuna Don instead. Good call. Spicy yellowfin tuna tartare over well-seasoned sushi rice, topped with sesame, furikake, green onions, with a little radish and cucumber on the side. The tuna was very fresh, the rice was on point. Service was quick and polite - they even have an outside window for takeout. The Kaki Curry came with six fried oysters, some rice, potato salad, and a dab of sauce for the fried oysters. The fried oysters were fresh and crunchy. Overall, it was satisfying but nothing spectacular. The Shiso Mentaiko Cream Spaghetti is a cream sauce based pasta dish with roe, shiso leaves, and nori seaweed. It's an interesting twist to your popular spaghetti dish so the flavor profiles were interesting. The dish was creamy and the nori and roe brought some unami flavor. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy inside, with a nice light seasoning that didn't overpower the dish. The curry sauce was rich, slightly sweet, and had just enough depth to keep you going back for another bite. Portion size was great for the price, and everything came out hot and fresh. The vibe felt cozy and laid-back--nothing fancy, but definitely the kind of place you'd come back to when you're craving something reliable and filling. Only reason it's not a full 5 stars is I wish the curry had a bit more spice or complexity, but that's personal preference. Still, a really enjoyable meal overall and worth checking out.

The ambiance was also quite nice. I enjoyed the wall decor, and the ambiance is a bit darker. As for food, two of my friends got the creamy vegan ramen (they're vegan and vegetarian). My other friend for a pork don with a spicy miso ramen, and I got the gyu-don with a spicy miso ramen. The food was very delicious - everything was cooked well, perfectly flavored. I like the rice plates as they come with a tiny bowl of ramen of your choice :) Overall, we would definitely come back again as we thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience!

It was kind of difficult already with my husbands crutches. A wheelchair could be possible if they sit you at the very front entrance. We wanted to go because they have napolitan and we were very happy that we went. The staff were nice. They keep to themselves and check in on you just enough. There's anime on the shelves if you want to read and relax. Love that they had a warning that some of them may not be suitable for kids. They don't split bills, so heads up if you're going with multiple people. Our boys really liked their curry and katsu. They were able to make it not really spicy and it was just right for them. Napolitan was so good. The serving size was just right. At first I thought it might be too big, but because it was so good, I scarfed that thing down. This will definitely be our spot to go back to when we're in Japantown.

This was one of those places that I always passed and would think to myself "I need to stop there one of these days." Well I finally did and it was quite good. The curry I got would have been the perfect level of spice for my wife, who's fully white, but next time I think I'll go up a level or two. It was still good and full of great flavor, but I expected a bit more from the level of spiciness I got. The young guy that was helping me was very nice and attentive. There was this person visiting someone who worked there, I think she was a nurse who worked nearby, who was chatting with her friend (the other server) at such a volume I wonder if the nurse lady knew that inside voices were even an option. That was a little distracting but I don't blame my server for that. I don't care if employees at places want to chat, that's fine. Just be aware of the volume. Overall I'm very glad I went here and the food was delicious.

Good in the fact it's simple, but left me wanting more. We went for lunch. When I say the service is basic, it's that we got seated, they brought out waters and that was the only service we received during the meal. The reason for my 3 star rating is that I wasn't really wowed by anything and the value. I understand rent and overhead is expensive but $17 for that Oyakodon is bit high. I understand Unagi being priced what it is. With that being said the ramen is comparable to other ramen shops in SF.

In 2017 it was listed on SF's best food truck list and if you've been a fan they've carried over their black and red color scheme to the restaurant.  The good thing is they are used to operating at high volume with fast turn around so the food comes out really fast. The menu is small but they do serve Japanese beers and sake. Shoyu Ramen: Noodles and broth were perfect and the chashu and seaweed were abnormally large, it was very tasty. For being proportional I would have loved more green onion. Spicy Miso Ramen: Perfect for warming you up on a cool SF day, it's savory with a delicate heat and thicker cut pieces of meat. Overall size may be perfect for other people but my friend and I could not finish our bowls, it seemed like we kept eating and eating and the bowl looked exactly the same so great value for the price.
