It's not a dumpling house, it's a dumpling home. And it's run efficient as a military base. We showed up within an hour or so of closing and there was a long line. Had to sign up for the list on yelp, but even at 16th spot in line we sat in 25 mins just as predicted. The dumplings were very delicious. Pan fried pork baos (10/10) - the bao is thin, and the bottom is fried to crispy golden brown. The inside is filled with yummy soup. It's an explosion of flavor and different textures! Beef tongue (10/10) - tried this for the first time and it didn't disappoint. Braised beef tongue with special soy sauce on top. This dish is served cold. The outdoor seating was nice (and super nice of them to provide blankets if you're cold). We ordered the zha jiang noodles, which was super colorful and nicely portioned. The mushroom + chicken dumplings were also good, but I wouldn't say they were spectacular (solid dipping sauce though). I liked the pork baos the most by far--they came out piping hot and were filled with pork juices, so be careful when biting in! Very tasty! I liked their chili sauce on the noodles so be sure to ask for it! Food was good, but I'm not sure if it justifies the typical (long) wait time. Dropped in for lunch recently on a Sunday around noon and the place was packed with a healthy group of people on the waiting list before us which was a good sign for the food quality. The front desk quoted us 25 minutes but we were called after only about 15 minutes which was great. Our server was friendly and helped us select between a few options we had in mind. She checked on us frequently to ensure we had everything we needed. Everything we ordered was spectacular. Definitely at least a tad bit more expensive than a hole in the wall dumpling spot you might find in other parts of SF, but worth a try. Amazing food, went on a Friday during lunchtime and there was no wait. We walked here from my friends place so didn't pay attention how the parking was but it is street parking. We got the Dan dan noodle, pan fried pork bun and xiao long bao. Everything was incredible, flavor was so good and made well. The pan fried pork bun had so much juice inside and flavor was so good. This was our first stop on a dumpling crawl and one of the most recommended spots in Hayes Valley. Since we had our dog with us, we sat outdoors - easy seating and a comfortable setup. Service was friendly and quick. We ordered, ate, and wrapped up everything in about 20 minutes, which made it a great crawl-friendly stop. Came with a group of friends, a couple of which are regulars here, and I am happy they had a couple of vegan options that I could choose from. Of the two vegetarian/vegan options I remember seeing, I chose the steamed dumplings over the buns, and they were pretty good with a reasonably flavorful vegetable-rich filling. I think it was vegetables and tofu rather than mock meat, which I don't see as often in restaurants. I was also able to try the green onion pancake and the green beans, which were shared across the table, and they were also good. My omnivorous friends swear by the pork xiao long bao (XLB), so that's apparently the thing to get if you're not veg*n (and that's the traditional XLB, so that makes sense). The location was really busy when we were there (it was close to a holiday and a Sunday), so you may need to prepare for a wait unless you're grabbing takeout. The decor feels fairly standard for a Chinese restaurant, and it seemed fairly clean where we were sitting (near the entrance). They handled our group of six pretty well, so I would say they're decent for groups (bearing in mind the wait, of course). We're not in SF that often (because parking is a nightmare, LOL), and my husband doesn't have the patience for long waits, but I would be happy to come back here again with our friends. read more

Came on a Monday at 11:40am, 10 mins after opening, as a party of 1. No wait! Service was attentive and the interior was cozy. Was recommended by a friend to try, in his opinion, the most outstanding item to get here: the mala numb & spicy pork xiao long bao. I got the 8 piece order, and it was enough to make me feel satisfied. First off, the dumpling skin was phenomenal. It was SO thin, but still had a nice bite/chewiness. Might be the best XLB dough I've ever had. Inside there was plenty of meat and a good amount of juice. The flavor was deep and rich, but not too salty. I personally would've liked the mala spice to be slightly stronger, but that's coming from someone who doesn't mind eating the actual peppercorn. The filling was also definitely slightly sweetened - it was a good balance to the savory, but if I were being nitpicky I would've liked it a HINT less sweet. This place is up there in the XLB world, and 100% worth a try. I've tried a handful of XLB spots -- Din Tai Fung, Dough Zone, Nan Xiang in NYC, and this place sticks out for sure. FYI -- The XLB here are the BIG kind, like double the size of Din Tai Fungs. There's so many different styles of XLB ranging from Nanjing style, to Shanghai, to Taiwanese style. I would say this one is a hybrid of Nanjing and Shanghai-style -- The wrapper was super thin and translucent like Nanjing's, but the filling was hefty with sweeter soup like Shanghai's. Don't forget to bite the dumplings carefully and use the little red soup bowl to salvage the soup! Or else you'll end up like the person next to me who got soup all over herself hahaha. read more

The fried pork bao was crispy on the outside but so juicy and tender on the inside. The beef brisket noodle soup was also really good, and the portions were big. The beef melted in my mouth. The numb and spicy XLB was also a hit and super juicy. Spice levels are extremely mild though. The waitress said it would be spicy but it wasn't spicy at all in my opinion. SF has no shortage of restaurants whose names are prefixed with "Dumpling." I'd imagine establishments with this naming convention finding it hard to shine in such a crowded marketplace. That is, unless you're Dumpling Home, long revered to be one of the best dumpling joints in SF. As a party of two on a Friday evening, there were over 9 parties ahead of us, but the line moves quick (little less than 30 min). The food arrives pretty promptly after ordering too, a hallmark of Chinese restaurants. The juicy pork dumplings are utterly sumptuous, crispy bottoms contrasting the plush skin and silky soup inside. Definitely the best I've had. The crab and pork soup dumplings are also standouts, very robust in crab flavor, which is a qualm I have with this XLB variation . Heavier than din tai fungs but delicious all the same. My boyfriend made a snarky aside as I ate the soup dumpling whole, something about a breach of dumpling etiquette. Dumpling policing aside, this dish too otherwise superb. A surprising favorite and reigning champ of the night were the dandan noodles. Sesame forward and less spicy than other renditions while still not feeling overly indulgent with the nutty flavor. We also had the wood ear fungus which was delicious and lended a delicate acidic contrast to the rich meal. A skip? Probably the eggplant. Just too oily, almost swimming in a vat of viscous, overly sweet sauce. It gave both of us a pretty gnarly stomach ache. Updating to 5 stars since honestly this is one of my favorite restaurants. Yes it's a bit pricy and yes the wait is often long. But the dumplings are addicting!! The juicy pork baos are out of this world. Careful when you bite into them because the juices will shoot everywhere. Their chicken Xiao long bao are excellent as well and full of soup. I wish they had a numb and spicy chicken version- their numb and spicy pork is amazing but I prefer chicken! If it's not on your table, ask for their chili oil. Super flavorful. The place is always busy and lively- great energy. But also means it can sometimes feel a bit hectic. If it's not too cold out or you're fine with the just a heat lamp (which admittedly does work well), the outdoor tables are a bit more relaxing. read more

The filling was juicy and packed with soup while the skin was thin but not too delicate that it bursts easily. Our party really enjoyed the pork boiled dumplings, and the spicy pig ear. The pig ear was crunchy and not overly spicy/mala. The famous sheng jian baos fell a little short. I would say the dough is a bit thick and on the sweeter side, reminiscent of a sweet mantou. The crab soup dumpling was very umami and the crab flavour was fresh. I was very curious about the spicy dumpings, and wasn't disappointed at all. The fried soup dumplings was on the sweeter side, but the fried bottoms were crispy without being heavy.
