I saw this restaurant was recommended as one of the top to visit in Chinatown. I honestly wasn't that impressed with the rice rolls. It was a lot of bland rice roll with not that much meat, and that part wasn't very good. I normally really like rice rolls at restaurants. I got the BBQ pork and shrimp rice rolls. The BBQ pork did not seem to have any barbecue flavour or sauce at all. I'm not sure if they gave me one without the barbecue. The pork was okay. I liked the shrimp roll better, although there wasn't that much shrimp. I think they overall lacked flavour, even after adding a lot of soy sauce and chili oil. I did really like the special soy sauce they make here as it has a unique flavour. Each one was $7.50. They take cash, Venmo, or Zelle.
It was super busy when my friends and I came on a Saturday morning. But don't let the line intimidate you as it moves pretty quickly. They also are efficient and it took 15 minutes after ordering for our food to be ready. You can tell the rice rolls are prepared authentically and handmade in the back. I loved how you can customize the rice rolls, getting 1 choice of protein and 1 choice of veggie. It was pretty cheap as well, around $7 per plate. Highly recommend visiting this place!

The wonton soup was really bland. Price: 5/5 This place is cash only. It was really affordable, with each dish costing less than $10. Great bang for your buck! Service: 4/5 This place is an order and then sit down. There was a decent line and wait. The tables were seat yourself so even if you get your order, there may be no seats. Ambiance: 3/5 This place is not comfortable for seating. You share tables with people. The place is a little dirty. And unfortunately, where we sat, there was a bit of ammonia smell (like pee). It was very off putting and made everything less appetizing. The rice roll was really good and I would totally come back to order to go from here.
The texture of these rice rolls are incredible -- very soft and tender, not super chewy. More silky than expected as well. They have a sauce bar at the side which definitely helps to make it taste good! They allow you to add 1 extra topping for free, and we chose corn. Prices are good and it is cash-only. Quite busy inside, but it didn't take us long to grab a table on a weekend afternoon.
Fast, casual, but yummy would be my description for Rice Roll Express. Located right in the heart of Chinatown, but definitely not your typical "hole-in-the-wall" spot. It's a little more modern, bright, clean, and although the space isn't huge, they fit a good amount of seating inside. Prices are slightly higher than some nearby spots, but still very affordable with generous portions. Personally, I'd rather pay a little more for fresh rice rolls made to order than go dirt cheap and sacrifice quality. You order at the cashier, grab a number, and wait for your food. Staff was friendly and efficient, and our food came out in about 10 minutes. We ordered the Rice Roll Express Special, Plain Rice Roll, Beef Brisket & Shrimp Wonton (without noodles), and Pork & Preserved Egg Congee. The rice rolls were definitely the highlight, fresh, soft, and had that silky velvet texture that just melts in your mouth. Adding egg gave it an extra creamy texture that I really enjoyed. I also experimented with adding peanut sauce and LOVED the nutty flavor with the rice roll/ The wontons were big and plump, and the beef brisket was super tender but pretty salty on its own. I'd definitely recommend it with noodles and soup to balance everything out. The congee was hearty and comforting for breakfast, but a little bland for my taste. I would've loved thicker pieces of preserved egg and smaller bits of pork. Overall, a great experience and definitely a spot worth checking out if you're wandering around Chinatown.

Great steamed rice rolls in SF Chinatown. You order at the counter. There was a long line but it moved decently quickly and they take your order and payment quickly. Be sure to have someone in your group grab a seat while you're waiting in line. It gets busy but people tend to eat quickly and leave. This was my first time trying a rice roll and it was so good! I'm vegan so I got the vegetable rice roll which comes with 2 free veggies, and I picked scallion and cilantro. The roll itself was nice, the rice noodle has a good soft but still slightly chewy texture, however it's definitely the sauces that make the dish. I especially liked the special soy sauce, and I also paired it with chili oil. I also tried some of the peanut sauce which I liked, but it was slightly sweet and the rice roll felt like it would go better with savory sauces to me. They also had a jalapeno soy sauce which looked interesting but I did not try. We came on a sunday afternoon around 5pm and it was quite busy, and me and my friend had to wait a short while before finding 2 open seats. There is a bathroom inside the restaurant but it is for paying customers only, and it is sort of hidden behind the ordering counter. The place only accepts cash or venmo, no credit card. My roll was $7 which felt like a great deal especially for SF.
We were here for lunch, there was a crowd I assumed it'd take a long wait, but since it was self service it didn't take much time for the food to arrive. We ordered a shrimp one, a pork one and some noodles. The pork was ok but the shrimp was amazing. The best part was the noodles it was a hidden treasure that we absolutely enjoyed. First time in spot, gives you a small mom and pop shop but as soon as you walk in, it's very cute, the menu is very straightforward and very easy to order a meal. Very fast service, the staff are nice, welcoming and friendly. Delicious food, flavorful and a must have condiments to put on food to add extra flavor. We ordered the specials beef roll, shrimp rolls, wonton soup, and black sesame soup. We'll definitely come back for more.
Great little lunch spot in Chinatown for something simple, light, affordable and delicious. I had the pork chee cheong fun and it was plump, soft, and really nicely done. They give you a generous portion too. You can add one extra topping for free, like cilantro, corn or bean sprouts. I went with bean sprouts and liked the extra texture. The pork and shrimp with roe in chili oil was good as well, although it's definitely on the mild side. This place isn't overly Szechuanized like a lot of other spots, so if you want that stronger spicy Szechuan flavor, you'll probably need to add your own extra sauce. Service was efficient and lunch was quick. Cash only. Overall, definitely a recommended Chinatown lunch spot if you want something affordable, light and tasty without making a whole production out of lunch.
I had been wanting to come here for sometime. NYC Chinatown has a few rice roll places, one of which is absolutely my favorite. Singapore has a few similar Michelin places. Incoming San Francisco's version. Price point is higher. This being san Francisco, is expected as most Chinese restaurants tend to be more expensive than NY. Noodles are very tasty. The combo version is quite big. The dried shrimp version is okay / not as good as NY version but is worth trying. The other dishes - congee is my favorite along with beef wonton soup. All things considered, this is a very satisfying place - it is not as good as my favorite spot in NY, and it is on par with the Michelin rated one in Singapore (from Hong Kong originally), but it is the only place specializes in rice rolls in San Francisco. They do it well. If you are not living in or traveling to NY or Singapore often, this is the place that will scratch your itch for rice rolls on the west coast.

My favorite was the wonton in a flavorful chili oil. It's not spicy, so I encourage non-spicy eaters to be brave and give it a try. Shrimp Feast rice roll has whole shrimp as well as small dried shrimp which offer small salty flavor bursts. Despite the long line and crowded tables, the turnover is quick. Order first, then sit down.

This place is overrated. I visited on a Saturday at 11:55am. There was a long line but it moves fast. I only waited 10 minutes in line to order and then another 10 minutes for the food to be ready. You wait for your number to be called. There were signs of, "no outside food or drinks but I saw many people with their matcha and boba tea drinks. There's a communal table, counter seating and some tables. It felt cramped in there. They do not accept credit cards. Cash, Venmo or Zelle only. They offer a few different condiments - peanut, Sriracha, special soy sauce, sweet sauce, black vinegar and sesame seeds. I ordered the shrimp feast rice roll, shrimp and roe wontons in chili oil and a soy milk. I wasn't asked what I wanted for the free topping on the rice roll which they offer corn, cilantro, scallions, bean sprouts or lettuce. It was just too hectic in there. The rice roll just kept falling apart. It was not silky. The dried shrimp was also fairly salty. For better rice rolls, try, Yin Ji Chang Fen. The chili wontons were good. You get 10 pieces on top of a bed of beansprouts. But when you slap on a lot of chili oil, that's mostly what you taste anyway. Fresh rice rolls! I can definitely see what the hype is all about! Restaurant is a little small, but the freshness of the rice paper was delicious! They even have their own special soy sauce too that wasn't salty at all! There was definitely a line that went out the door constantly so be prepared to wait, but it was over all a good place! I got the #1 which had all the meats, a shrimp one and lastly the wonton chili oil! All were amazing bites! read more
I finally had the time to come try rice roll express for a quick lunch and I'm so sad I haven't gotten the rice rolls until now. We got the shrimp feast rice roll with bean sprouts and dry wonton noodles to share and between 2 people it was more than enough food. Loved the mix of fresh and dried shrimp in the rice rolls. It's so flavorful and the egg adds a nice texture and flavor as well. Definitely top your rice roll with plenty of their special soy sauce and chili oil. The dry wonton noodles were also great. I really enjoyed their shrimp wontons too but it's really their fresh rice rolls that bring people here. It can definitely get busy but ordering is fast and efficient and like many fast casual Chinese spots, table sharing is expected! Cash or Venmo only for payment. read more
I always swing by rice noodle express whenever I'm in SF. The taste and quality for the price is so worth it! My favorite go-tos are the egg rice noodle roll and porridge. You can never go wrong with a classic egg rice noodle roll. Paired with the soy sauce, the taste is amazing. The portions are also really big. As for the porridge, it included preserved egg and pork which is always a breakfast classic and warms me right up. Seating can get pretty limited but usually if you wait a bit you can get lucky with a table. Service is decent, you order at the front and then pick up your order when your number is called. read more

Rice Roll Express in Chinatown was a solid quick stop. The line itself moved pretty fast, but the wait for the food was a little longer since the place was packed, which was understandable. Getting a table can be tough because the seating is communal and a lot of people seem to hang around even after they finish eating, so I'd think of this more as a quick in and out meal. Also heads up, they don't take card. The shrimp rice rolls were definitely fresh, hot, and had that soft silky texture you want. Honestly all they needed was the special soy sauce and chili oil. The soy sauce had that addictive "crack sauce" type flavor, and the chili oil gave it a nice little Sichuan style tingly kick without overpowering everything. Rice Noodle Roll Express is a gem! We ordered delivery and everything arrived fresh + delicious. The shrimp rice noodle roll with cilantro was my favorite the cilantro really stood out and added such a bright fresh herby flavor. We also tried the combo with egg, beef, and green onion, which was also tasty. The rice noodle rolls had the perfect texture and you could tell it was freshly made they were soft, silky, and a bit bouncy. The sauces paired really well with everything without overpowering the ingredients and you had many options. On top of that, the portions were generous and the prices were very affordable. If you're looking for authentic, comforting rice noodle rolls, this spot is definitely worth trying!! read more

I wasn't expecting this spot to be so overstimulating because they don't have a crazy amount of Yelp reviews, but I was proven wrong. This place is so warm, stuffy, and crowded, it's truly a Chinatown experience. We tried the special and added shrimp, it came out steaming hot and was really good. The wontons weren't my favorite, they had peanuts in them which I'm not a fan of. At the counter, they have special/sweet soy sauce, peanut sauce, chili oil, and vinegar. Now is it worth a long wait to order, receive food, and have to squeeze around people...no it's not. I think it took around 45 minutes for the whole trip. They have indoor seating, but everything is completely full. The parking is awful, use rideshare apps or public transit to get here. ig: @cravingswithcat read more

Excellent food and great price point definitely worth visiting if you're in Chinatown in San Francisco not as good as New York Chinatown, but still worth the wait. The food service came out quickly and the flavors were delicious. We walked away with leftovers and will definitely come back. read more
My wife and I stopped by Rice Roll Express and picked up two orders of their rice rolls: one special and one "shrimp feast". The rice rolls here are as good as they get. The rolls are thin, have a wonderful chewy texture, there's generous amounts of toppings in each, and there's a sauce bar inside -- with peanut sauce, chili oil, hoisin, and soy sauce, so you can control the exact flavor profile you're getting. After placing our order, we received our order quickly -- well within 10 minutes. There's plenty of seating indoors, but we opted to take our food to go. If you're a fan of Cantonese rice rolls, I cannot recommend Rice Roll Express enough. Cash only, and parking in the area is extremely difficult. You'll want to either take public transportation, or prepare to double park if you're coming with a car. read more
Started our food journey in SF here and did not disappoint. Had the special roll- you can pick your sauce. I prefer peanut and chili oil. Definitely delicious and filling. The rice rolls are perfectly chewy and had a good filling to outside ratio. I'm not a huge soup girl but I think the wonton soup was also stellar. Came here on a Tuesday for a slightly later lunch and there was still a bunch of people here! I can tell that social media is doing wonders on this establishment because I see a lot of tourists coming through to try these rice rolls. Self seating, so it's nice if you come with someone else to either save you a seat. There's also a "bar" like seating against the wall. You order and pay in cash & your number's called when it's complete. If you order more than one plate you get a try. All of the condiments are provided at the front aside from the Sriracha-which they have at every table. I wished I tried the Shrimp Feast instead, but I guess it means that I'll just have to return another time. I didn't hate the Rice Roll Express Roll, but it's not a favorite of mine I was just curious to try it. ~~Service: Good. The rolls are good but not quite the same as the dim sum ones. The flavor is good and the self serve sauce bar means you'll always have enough sauce. There are a lot of tables to eat at once you grab your food from the counter The only down side to this spot is that there isn't a label system. You don't know which roll is which If you are buying multiple orders with similar ingredients. read more

Rice rolls are my favorite part of dim sum, I brought my friends here and they had vegetarian options too! I'm so happy that everyone liked it, the secret is literally dosing this with the special soy sauce. They also have peanut sauce and chili oil Ordered the beef rice roll, veg rice roll with bean sprouts and green onions, black sesame soup, soy milk. Everything is authentic and I'll definitely be back my next sf trip to try the other yummy dishes ! Service was super quick. I always think that it is easier to do one thing well than to do everything average. This place does it all well, and their menu is very simple. Order at the counter, let them know whether you are dining in or getting togo food. They give you a receipt with a number on it and you watch the display to see when your food comes up. The seatingvis mostly table shared bar counter. They have a variety of sauces/condiments to add to your noodle dish 9mce it is ready. You clean your own area when done and continue your journey through Chinatown. The Shrimp Rice Roll with scallions was perfect. The rice noodles were so fresh and the shrimp were super tender. Such an amazing place in Chinatown! The rice rolls are so delicate, filling, and affordable. One of the best value meals you can get in the city and definitely a must try if you are in the area. A filling meal for under $10 is a STEAL! I got the Rice Roll Express combo rice roll and you can load whatever sauces you want onto the roll so I added a little bit of everything. read more
