Chicken Dry Fried Chicken (Wet) Diced Or Wings*

San Tung - what can be said that hasn't been written a thousand times over? A San Francisco institution and gem. 75 minute wait for a large group of friends (7-8) on a Monday evening. Always well worth the wait! Highlights are of course the famous crispy dry fried chicken wings that no competitor has truly perfected or copied, the dry fried beef (I may enjoy this more than the chicken!) and dry fried string beans. Be prepared to wait and possibly make friends at a communal table. Oh San Tung, never change.

Brought some family who have never been and they enjoyed the infamous dry chicken wings, eggplant and fish filets in that order. Hot take, although I like the wings I def don't think they're the best I've ever had in the city. I liked that the eggplant skin was pre-peeled and it was a generous amount. I'd skip the fish bc it was fried with a candied skin with the same flavor as the wings which wasn't what I expected. Note we came during lunch so if you're getting the wings just pay $5 more for double the wings (12 instead of 6) rather than get the lunch special if there's a large party. Staff attentive and friendly.

We ordered two small soups and the fried chicken wings. Tomato Soup and Egg Drop Soup: For a small, they were quite generous with the portion size. Definitely could have ordered one to share. Both were flavored quite well and enjoyable. San Tung Fried Chicken: I heard the fried chicken was a must-try, but it wasn't for me. It was far too sweet for me and just reminded me of korean fried chicken. I don't prefer my protein on the sweet side, and these left a jarring sweet aftertaste in my mouth I did not enjoy. I will not be back for the wings but would be interested in other things. The prices appear to be a bit more expensive for Chinese food, but the portion sizes are slightly larger than average.

One of the best restaurants in San Francisco. Reliable, delicious, consistent. Yes there's a wait, but it's absolutely worth waiting for. I tried a few dishes other than the usual wings and black bean noodles this time, and they were also good! But not better than the classics, they're famous for a reason.

Ordered the dry fried shrimp and it was amazingly delicious! First time ordering and definitely won't be the last. Flavorful, saucy, and the shrimp were plump. Definitely a must try

Genuinely some of the worst Chinese food I've had in the city. I've had San Tungs for takeout in the past but wanted to give it another go dining in person. Sad to say, I will not be coming here again. I truly do not understand how this place is hyped up. For food we got: - hot and sour soup: liked the shrimp in it, the "hot" is just a ton of black pepper. Would not recommend just not good. - mushroom & bok choy: sauce tasted kinda gooey, and the mushrooms were soggy. - shrimp chow mein with homemade noodle: literally just salty noodles, no flavor to noodles or shrimp besides being way too salty - dry fried wings: only thing I semi enjoyed, still way too salty. Good at first but would not go back for them or anything else. Service is average for a joint like this. It's fast and to the point so not docking any stars there. They do a great job moving the like quickly. Ambiance is crowded and loud, it's a popular joint so expect to share tables with other parties etc. If you're looking for flavorful, authentic, and delicious Chinese food with a good ambiance and service go to Dynasty Dumpling on California, 100x better.

I came with a group for lunch and was seated quickly. We ordered beef, chicken wings, fried rice, dumplings, and green beans. This place has amazing food. The beef and chicken wings were my personal favorites but everything was good.

I have been yearning to try San Tung for the longest time ever since I heard of their bomb.com chicken wings, and we finally had the chance to try it. Well let's just say the hype is real. We arrived on a Monday right when they opened at 11 am. The restaurant was already busy, but we managed to be seated as we walked in. That was just our luck, because within minutes, there were large groups arriving and more groups on the waitlist. We wanted something else to go with the chicken wings, and I also heard their jajiangmian was pretty good, so we ordered that along with the original dry fried chicken. We were served tea and water, and our server was friendly and efficient. There was a nice selection of condiments at our table as well, but we didn't need them of course. Watching the staff, they were very on top of everything, which was to be expected, given how famous this restaurant is. I saw they even had a station set up for to-go orders for people to grab utensils, napkins, and condiments. Very streamlined. The noodles with black bean sauce were first to arrive, and the dish was packed with meat and seafood. The noodles were perfectly bouncy and chewy, and the meat was tender. The black bean sauce was solid. It reminded me of the jajiangmian I've had at San Wang (which iykyk). It was the perfect potion for sharing and we quickly devoured it all. Then the star of the show arrived, the original dry fried chicken. We opted for the wings and they came in a sticky, lick-your-finger delicious, garlicky sauce that left me wanting more. I particularly enjoyed ripping the meat off the bones and dipping it into the extra sauce. These were nothing like I have ever had. My husband, who has had way more wings than I've had (as I'm not usually a wing kind of girl), said these were hands down some of the best wings he's ever had. You'll want to ask for more napkins, because trust me, that sticky sauce gets pretty messy (and stays on your fingers). Now I see why our server asked if we wanted to order some rice, because that sauce would have been so good over rice. But even without rice, we managed to clean up that plate nicely and left only bones. Bones that were gnawed on and savored of course. As I type this, I'm thinking about the next chance we can get to go back to San Tung. I'm glad we chose a weekday, because I cannot imagine having to wait forever for a table. We will most definitely be back!!

Me and my husband had to check this place out due to everyone raving about it and the high rating reviews. I ordered the sweet and spicy original wings. I would say the flavor is not in your face and it's a settling calm flavor in one tiny wing. Id also say the wings are good but dont know if this place lived has lived up the hype when people say "these are the BEST wings". I wasn't impressed however I would say this is one of the better spots I've been to. I felt like the wings were a tiny size and wished it was more meatier. Crisp on the wings was decent, and easy to chew on. Service: if you're coming here, trust me on this and call ahead to order, it will save you so much time. If I didn't do this, I would have waited 30 mins. Line was out the door so be aware.

The WORLD FAMOUS Sticky Garlic Chicken Wings! The "Best Wings in America" and I agree!

Excellent Chinese cuisine, great warm service, in busy but comfortable ambiance is the perfect way to describe San Tung. I was so excited to try this place for my birthday. Upon arrival, the wait was around 30-35 minutes. I didn't mind, as I could see the array of dishes arriving on different tables. As we got seated, I immediately placed my order after looking at the menu while I waited. I ordered Mongolian Beef, Shrimp Fried Rice, and of course, the sticky garlic wings! The Mongolian Beef was saucy and flavorful, with green onions, white onions, and chili peppers. The Shrimp Fried Rice was filled with shrimp, veggies, and had so much flavor on its own. The combination of the Fried Rice and Mongolian Beef was absolutely delicious! The star of the show was the sticky garlic wings. After seeing it for so long on TikTok, I finally made it to try what is being called the "Best Wings in America". After the first bite, we agreed these wings were DEFINITELY the BEST!!! The wings were fried perfectly, seasoned to perfection. The sticky garlic sauce that drenches the wings added another layer that kept me going back for more. Definitely worth the wait and the trip to San Francisco. This is my new favorite place and I will be back very soon!

Not my first time coming here but finally writing a review based off my most recent experience. Parking is always hard to find here so it's best to have one person find parking while the other sign up to wait. We arrived around 530p on a Sunday and managed to wait only 1 hour to be seated. You write your corresponding number, name, and party number on a white board. Stay nearby because they'll call out your number. If you miss it, they move onto the next due to the volume of people waiting. Dried fried chicken is a MUST. Perfect texture...crispy, saucy, flavorful, fingerlickin' good..must I say more? The other dishes we ordered are just pretty average tasting like any other Chinese restaurant. Knocked down a star because service isn't the greatest. We asked 3 different servers for a fork and to refill our tiny water cups. But what can you expect from an insanely busy restaurant?

San Tung is a candy store and you can't convince me otherwise. Ok yes it's been long rumored that they serve other food, but their Dry Fried chicken wings are good enough to hard carry a franchise empire. There's no way they use traditional dry fried seasonings. The sauce is thick as molasses and twice as sweet. But the batter is still mouthwateringly savory and the chicken skin firm and crispy. For sweet tooths like me, this is the final boss of chicken wings. There's really not much more that can be said about their chicken when they've already got (as of writing this) 8700+ positive reviews in the books. I made the mistake of also ordering dry fried beef. Clearly my appetite was too much for my stomach to handle. The beef isn't any better or worse: it's just different. The flavor compliments it well. The bonelessness of the beef made it feel like we were really eating candy out of a bag. Do yourself a favor and order one or the other, never both. Your palate and pre-diabetes will thank you. Lastly, we got the pork dumplings. Huge portions for the size, good soft mushy texture for their wrapper and firm, salty pork on the inside. Paired well with just a hint of soy and chili sauce. Not as notable as their signatures but the dumplings are worth ordering. The restaurant itself is traditional Chinese, but not attached to Chinatown. We came in on a Friday lunch and were seated immediately, despite the restaurant being nearly packed. We must've gotten lucky, because 15+ other people came in shortly after and waited 20+ minutes to get in. This isn't fine dining, this shouldn't be a special occasion. This is "what do you feel like eating today? Let's get chicken wings". I'm not from San Francisco. I don't live in San Francisco. Every time I visit, I make the pilgrimage to San Tung.

Been coming to San Tung for years, even back when San Tung #2 was next door LOL. This place has been a staple for me growing up in SF, and it is one of those spots you just keep going back to. Wait was about 20 to 30 minutes on a Sunday afternoon, which is honestly standard here. Once seated, service was quick and efficient as always. It does get loud, but that is part of the experience and I do not mind it. Walnut Prawns My favorite thing to order here. Crispy, perfectly coated, and that sweet creamy sauce always hits. This is the must order for me every time. Original Dry Fried Chicken Wings Still good and flavorful, but I will say it used to be a bit better when it was more saucy and coated heavier. The flavor is there and the crisp is solid, just not as drenched as I remember from years back. Fried Rice A little on the oily side this visit, but still tasty and satisfying. Good portion and classic comfort side. Overall, San Tung is still a classic SF staple. It may not be perfect every single time, but it is consistent, nostalgic, and somewhere I will continue to support !

San Tung Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - San Tung

Does San Tung use MSG on their dishes?

Yes, but they only use organic, non-GMO, farm-to-table MSG. Do you have any other dumb questions?

Will San tung be open on Christmas Day?

No, they are not open on Christmas day. Great food!!

Do you do a Party Platter? How much is the dry wings party platter?

I ordered the deep-fried wings (1 dozen) and the price was $19.95. I went there the week of Christmas. The wings were fabulous!!

Do they ever run out of their wings?

Have not experienced it before. I guess to be safe, can call and ask.

Will they be open during Lunar New Year?

not sure but my guess is no - they were closed on Columbus Day 2022 haha

Do they still do online orders?

Their website indicates they do.

Why is it temporary closed and when will it reopen? Need that fix!

Not sure why it says temporarily closed, but they were open on Saturday 7/8/23.

What is the recommended attire for dining at your establishment?

Something you don't mind wearing outside in the cold for an hour, because that's likely to be how long you'll be waiting for a table.

Do they take reservations?

No they don't.

How many wings with each order?

It varies but usually about 10 which is fine when they're decent wings and drumettes, but I've had to-go orders when the wings were scrawny, just skin & bones, hardly any meat, in which case even getting 10 was not a good deal.

Has the wing recipe changed recently?

Not that I’m aware of, but after my first experience I’d never go back.

Do San Tung take Reservations?

No, there is a sign up sheet just inside the entrance.

Are you closed on Wednesdays?

No they are opened

Is this restaurant located in Chinatown?

nope! san tung is located closer to golden gate park in the inner sunset area!

Are they open Sunday?

Usually, yes! Unless they go on vacation

Did anybody know what hidden fee that they charge? I grab their take out a bit often but never pay…

When you order from their website, they charge a 4% service charge.

How long is the wait for Saturday lunch?

usually 20~ min

Open for dine in now?

Yes! Open for dine in now! Hurry before everyone finds out!

Why cant i order online for the next day? It is just letting me order on Fridays?

San Tung is closed on Wed and Thursday's.

Do they take reservations for large group?

They're currently closed for dine-in. Take-out only as of today.

We were a large group of 15, including several kids, and we completely understand that the restaurant is small and accommodating a group our size can be challenging. We waited in line for almost an hour with around 6 children. During the wait, a staff member named Sue came outside, asked how many people were in our group, and handed us menus. Since it was our first visit, we were naturally asking questions and trying to understand the menu. Unfortunately, throughout the interaction, her body language and expressions felt impatient and unwelcoming. There was visible frustration and eye-rolling, which made us feel uncomfortable rather than welcomed. Even after we were seated, the experience continued to feel tense. One of the toddlers in our group started crying briefly -- something fairly common with young children -- and we were told to "keep it low out of respect." While we absolutely respect other diners, the way it was communicated felt lacking in empathy, especially on a busy Mother's Day with families dining out. A small gesture of kindness or understanding could have gone a long way. Instead, my friend felt compelled to take the child outside, which was disappointing. Additionally, after being seated, we had to remind the staff multiple times to come take our orders. What makes this especially unfortunate is that the ramen itself was truly delicious and lived up to the hype. The food was excellent, which is why this experience was so disappointing overall. I hope management takes this feedback seriously because customer service and hospitality matter just as much as the food experience. Unfortunately, this was not the ideal way to end our Mother's Day celebration.
