While we were waiting for a table, we said we were okay with 2 separate tables, and they still weren't seating us even though we were first on the waitlist. We would ask the reason, but no explanation was given. When we were sat, the server gave a lot of attitude, and even hit the wall behind one of our guests. Food was great, but it was so hot inside. I'm so happy I was born Korean and that ppl are born Korean and that this restaurant exists. This place was so yummy it's ridiculous. We ordered the barley tea, beef tartare with Asian rice pear, yukkejang, and dulsot bibimbap. Barley tea was Tartare was yummy and well marinated and seasoned. No complaints at all for the food it was so delicious and yummy! I like cracking my own egg in yukkejang but that's just personal preference. I've been here a handful of times since it's so close to my house, so I figured it was finally time to leave a review. We almost always order the Braised Beef Short Ribs for two. The short ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender and come in a rich stew with potatoes, carrots, turnip, and rice cakes, plus two bowls of rice. You can choose your spice level and pick between white or purple rice. . It also comes with the usual banchan. Kimchi, pickled radish, fish cake, and cucumber. Nothing really stands out, but they were all fresh. One thing I always wish is that the stew came with more rice cakes since there are only a few scattered throughout. Luckily, you can order extra, and I'd definitely recommend doing that if you're enjoy them as much as I do. I've also had the bibimbaps, and they are really good too. Finally got to try this spot after hearing so much hype about it when it first opened! The place is smaller than expected inside but very clean, bright, and gives minimalist vibes. We arrived around 7p on a Friday and there was only a quick wait (Yelp waitlist was very short, probably didn't even need to join) so seems like the hype has died down quite a bit (I remember having to wait 1.5 hours in November last year). We ordered the galbijjim (spice level 1) and the meat pancake (yuk jeon). The yuk jeon was so good! Very flavorful, crispy, and unique (haven't seen it on the menu anywhere else). However I will say it was a little too oily which made the rice paper soggy on the bottom. 10/10 flavor though and good portion. The galbijjim was actually quite spicy for level 1 so I would probably opt for no spice next time. (My partner agreed it was decently spicy and his spice tolerance is a lot better than mine.) The meat was very flavorful and tender, though some parts were a bit too fatty for me. I loved the other toppings too -- the veggies were cooked nicely and it also comes with rice cakes. I added wide glass noodles which were tasty as well. The regular portion will probably serve 3-4 people for around $80. We were so full by the end of the meal and still had a lot to take home :) Service was friendly and food came out very quickly! We did have to flag someone down for more water and napkins though. I've been so excited to try Hwa Mi Won after seeing this new Galbijim spot open up and I finally got a chance to go for lunch. I arrived with a few friends around 1pm on a Sunday and were happy to get seated right away. We ended up getting a large galbijim which comes with beef short ribs, vegetables, rice cakes, and 3 bowls of rice and a seoullongtang to share. The galbijim was absolutely delicious with super tender pieces of beef, chewy rice cakes, and soft carrots, potatoes and turnips. I almost wished we added on more rice cakes as they had the perfect texture and soaked up the sauce nicely. The large is definitely enough to feed 4 hungry people and we enjoyed the seoullongtang for a warm, comforting soup to share. Price-wise Hwa Mi Won is more affordable than other galbijim spots in the city and I loved the flavor of the sauce (not too sweet)! Any kind of preparation of the raw beef actually, either French steak tartare, Ethiopian gored gored, kitfo, or even the most basic of it all Ethiopian kurt sega (also known as tere sega). I've been skeptical of finding any good one here in SF actually especially after eating a kitfo at the house of Tadu two weeks ago. These people need to go to DC and Northern VA to learn how to make Ethiopian food. Anyway, back to Hwa Mi Won. I finally found it, I finally find a great steak tartare of raw beef in the form of Korean Yukhoe. Incredible quality, textures, delicious and full of flavor. I was so happy! This dish is a must order, I think this was one of the best dish I've had so far this year beside my dish in Maui at Mama's Fish House with my GF. I also ordered a Combination Bone Soup (Modeum Tang). It was milky, creamy, and hot. (add little bit of salt to adjust the taste) I've had to order this even thought it's 85 degree outside. The only challenge that we had for lunch - finding a close parking space. We were quite impressed with the simple ambiance, tasty Banchan, excellent service, reasonable prices, and most importantly - the tasty food. One weekend evening, right before it opened I added myself to the waitlist on Yelp. Highly recommend that otherwise there will be a wait. The restaurant has a nice interior, good art. For items ordered, for two people we tried the: Beef Jang: Thin meat patty that was sweet like bulgogi, fried with rice paper or seemed like it. It was a bit hard to eat cause the beef patty would fall out. It had a sweet dipping sauce with it. Overall okay. Seollongtang: Got the combination one which comes with brisket duo, galbi, oxtail, beef tendon, cheek meat, wheat noodles and rich ox bone soup. Comes with a bowl of rice, purple or white rice. Noodles were overcooked, nice creamy broth, the meats were all good beside the beef rib which had a decent amount of connective tissue so hard to take the meet off with just a chopstick and spoon. Galbi Tang: Soup broth was a bit sweet when I got it, but by adding the salt it helped balance it. It came with tender boneless beef short rib meat, glass noodles, egg and then side of green onions to add. Got it with purple rice. It also came with a beef rib and had the same issue as the beef rib from the seollongtang. For the meal a side of banchan, fish cake, radish, cabbage kimchi, and cucumber salad were served. The favorite was the fish cake. Service was okay, not amazing since we were waiting a bit before the order was taken. But that's fine, food is good. This place is sort of a cleaner and calmer version of Daeho. Maybe it's because they are relatively newer or it was just our timing? Without tasting them side by side or me being able to go to Daeho any time I want (far drive) so I have a recent memory of it, it's hard to say that the flavors of Hwa Mi Won's Galbijjim can't compare to Daeho. Off memory Daeho's Galbijjim was a bit more flavorful but Hwa Mi Won's beef was more tender. As for flavors that could be due to the varied spice levels depending on our group. Service - It took a bit for us to get seated (they're understaffed), but once seated, we were served fairly quickly. Overall, friendly and attentive staff. Ambiance - Love the modern & clean decor, much nicer than the average Korean restuarant. The restaurant is smaller than I expected and fits maybe 40 people or so. Food - We ordered the galbijjim (medium spicy) and added on additional vegetables (potatoes, radishes, carrots, & onions). My god... it was incredible. The galbi is ridiculously tender and I loved the home-y suace, which is more savory/balanced than Daeho's sweeter sauce. We got the regular-sized galbijjim ($75) and it was massive! Certainly big enough for 4 people. It also comes with two rices of your choice (white or purple). Note that they don't offer a "mild spicy" option - only "no spicy", "medium spicy", or spicier options. The "medium spicy" here is definitely equivalent to "medium spicy" at Daeho. The complimentary banchan (unlimited refills) comes with four dishes: fish cakes, kimchi radish, kimchi, and pickled cucumbers. These were okay, nothing to write home about. Also boasting high commendations from Infatuation and Beli alike, Hwa Mi Won piqued my interest, so I made the trek out. My friends and I came here on a rainy Wednesday evening around 5, surprised to see no wait. We settled on the large galbijjim, medium spicy, with cheese atop, a necessity when you order at these types of establishments and shared the seollongtang. To date, I've never had a good seollungtang in the bay. The broth should have a sticky mouthfeel imparted by the gelatin. This had none. Unfortunate but expected. Otherwise, it's just a decent, simple beef bone broth. The galbijjim is marginally different than Daeho's. Decadent, cheesy, and beefy all the same. The presentation varied slightly; the stew's runnier (which I'm a fan of -- that's up to personal preference), but contents are still the customary assortment of potatoes and carrots. Overall, the experience is just ok. The banchan is disappointing, with refills incurring additional surcharges. $5 for a scant portion of kimchi and kkaduggi leans toward absurdity. People mention that Hwa Mi Won is Daeho's slightly more affordable counterpart, but I'm not so easily convinced. read more

So great to have Hwa Mi Won in the (Outer) Richmond. We don't have to track specifically to Japantown when we want some kalbijim (칼비짐). Recently came by for lunch with my hubby and this place is hopping. Good thing they have a Yelp waitlist to make sure everyone is signed in. We came at a good time, so our wait was only like for a minute. Sat down and ordered a Seolleontang (ox bone soup) with Galbi because it's so cold outside. And we also got a Galbi Bibimbab and added cheese! I was so excited because I have never had bibimbab with cheese before. This just made me so happy. Food is really good without them being too salty. In fact they have salt and pepper on the side in case you need them which I only use additional pepper only. Also they give you a side of Gochujang so that's flavorful enough. A few differences I appreciate: - warmer tones - tables have wood tone with kintsugi-inspired accents, rice paper door throughout walls and ceilings, ceramic looking ware instead of stainless steel - fish cakes and cucumbers in the banchan - yukhoe (steak tartare) is offered, and more menu options in general - bones in the kalbijim are also longer which makes for a prettier presentation and surprisingly - I suspect purposefully - fit perfectly in the to-go containers, which are identical to Daeho in that they will seal it with plastic) Yukhoe was excellent but probably would not pay extra for the Parmesan cheese next time Seolleongtang broth had great depth Kalbijim was excellent and was generous with the glass noodle add on (my favorite part). My party of 3 were seated immediately around 5:40 pm on a Sunday. Six parties were already on the waitlist, but luckily, we bypassed the waitlist and snagged one of the last few smaller tables still open from the first seating round. All members must be present to be seated. We shared a large galbijjim and added wide sweet potato noodles. The seasoning and sauce is a tad sweet for my liking but paired well with the banchan of radish and cabbage kimchi, spicy fish cake strips, and pickled cucumbers and onions. The meat was tender and fell off the bone, and the dish overall wasn't too greasy. At the end of the meal, we were stuffed and brought home some leftovers. Came here with a group of four and we all enjoyed everything from the moment we walked in. We made reservations just in case for dinnertime and glad we did because they were busy. The place has this clean open concept vibe with light brown wooden furniture and white walls that make everything feel bright. It was a little warm inside when we went and I did sweat a bit from eating the hot food, but the food and service made up for it. The staff were super friendly and personable, and the portions were no joke for the ribs. We left full and still had leftovers! We ordered the crispy yuk jeon, wakyu yukhoe, the large braised beef short ribs with glass noodles, and the seolleong tang. Everything tasted fresh and comforting, especially the clean tasting broth from the seolleong tang. A quick tip from me is that I love glass noodles and they give you a ton, but I probably would not add them into the braised short ribs again because they soak up the sauce fast and make it starchy and thicker than I would like it. The flavor and meat though were still super good. My favorite was all the beef dishes but honestly I could have been totally happy just eating the wakyu yukhoe with a BIG bowl of rice. Will definitely be back for more and two dishes of the beef tartare! read more

Hwa Mi Won has been on my list of places to checkout for a bit, and I finally had a chance to come by on an early Sunday afternoon. It was around 1:30pm and there was no wait - maybe around 4-5 other parties seated. It's quite a large bright and clean space with plenty of tables, but I'm sure it can get quite busy. We got quite a few things to share between two of us and definitely over-ordered because of how good everything looked. We had 4 banchan - a nice fresh/younger kimchi, a lightly dressed cucumber salad, some fish cake strips, and a daikon that was less crisp and more tender than expected - all tasty and we got refills on the cucumber salad, kimchi and fish cakes. -Wakyu Yukhoe: our friend had recommended the yukhoe, so we had to get one to try - tartare is not usually my thing since I don't think its super flavorful, but this is nicely seasoned with sesame oil and some sort of sweet bulgolgi-esque sauce. The korean pear was a nice addition to this as well. I will say the serving size was pretty big and it would probably be better split between more people though. -Crispy Yuk Jeon: this was a little different than what I was expecting, and is essentially a beef patty pancaked inside what I believe is rice paper that gets crisped up - it was a little oilier than I would like and while it was nice to try wasn't my favorite. -Combination Bone Soup (Modeum Tang): you get a choice of purple or white rice, and I picked white rice, but this actually comes with some wheat noodles inside, so I didn't really eat much of the rice with it! The soup is nice and clean, with the rich mouthfeel that comes with a broth that's had hours in the making. There was a generous amount of meat, which was all very tender, and I love that you can season it to taste with salt and pepper at the table. -Mushroom Stone Pot (Beoseot Dolsot Bimbimbap): this came with soooooo many mushrooms and was super umami and earthy. The stone pot comes out hot and gave the rice a nice crisp without anything getting too burnt - I just wish this came with a little bit of something else to balance out all the mushroom - the kimchi banchan helped but it just started to get a little one not after a bit. Overall, Hwa Mi Won definitely met our expectations! We had leftovers to take home and it ended up being about $60 a person - definitely a little more high-end but we over-ordered. Can't wait to come back with a larger group to try the galbijim or one of the larger hotpot dishes! read more

We ordered the galbijjim (extra meat, add cheese, add glass noodles) for 4 people and it was more than enough food for us. We ended up stuffing ourselves until we could barely walk, so I'm thinking if we ate a normal amount, that meal probably could've fed 5-6 people. They also have free and unlimited banchan. My favorite is their fish cake banchan. I'm retry sure we asked to refill at least 3-4 times, but the staff were happy to serve us. We came as a Wednesday night walk in at 7:30pm and were seated right away. Parking was fine at night but I can imagine it might be more challenging during the day. Nonetheless, great spot for galbijjim, comparable go daeho (without the line)!! I'm excited to come back and try their other menu items!! read more
