This place is popular for dinner so make reservations! Short rib soup with cheese (Large): A- Kalbijjim is quite popular right now and this one is solid. Huge pieces of tender beef and the soup is slightly sweet. I like the daikon and rice cake in here. Chadol & yangji seolleong-tang: B+ Very clean tasting broth. Nice and refreshing. Kind of difficult to eat since they didn't have proper soup spoons to scoop. Crispy yuk jeon: A+ GET THIS APPETIZER! I'm not sure if this is an actual dish they serve in Korea but it's one of the best things I've had. Super crispy rice wrapper that has ground beef in the center.

Spacious and food portions are generous. I got the braised short ribs (it can be made not spicy). Super filling and definitely good for 3-4 people. Sweet and savory tasting, would definitely come again with friends

Amazing Korean galbijjim. A bit different than Daeho stylistically. I love how the chunks of short rib were all boneless and incredibly tender. It also came with rice cakes, potato, carrot, and a lot of daikon radish. There are actual jalapeño pieces in the sauce if you choose to make it spicy. Crispy beef pancake was refreshing! It's kind of like a smash burger in a fried rice paper. Great flavor, especially paired with the soy jalapeño onion banchan. The banchan itself didn't look like much but was surprisingly flavorful. My favorites were fishcake and cucumber. You get one free banchan refill. Galbijjim is always the perfect meal for when you want something hearty. And unlike Daeho, there is no wait!

Love the galbijjim here! It's incredibly flavorful and tender with a good ratio of meat to vegetables. Though the menu said it should have rice cakes and I don't think ours had any, so maybe worth checking with the server to clarify. The yukhoe was also delicious and fresh. It was my first time having beef tartare with pear in it, and I must say they pair very well! The banchan was good and seemed pretty standard to me (sad there are only four though). First refill free, subsequent refills $5 each. The galbijjim is quite large--we shared a yukhoe and galbijjim among four people and had some extra galbijjim to take home. Pretty good value! The server was very friendly and attentive, and the restaurant is pretty spacious with a clean aesthetic. The restaurant was mostly full but we were able to get a table for 4 on Sunday around 6:15pm with practically no wait. Highly recommend checking this spot out if you like galbijjim!

Appreciated the yelp waitlist - it went by in ~40 min on a Saturday night! Half the time went by looking for parking. Nice ambiance that was more relaxed than daeho - hwa mi won also wins with the better quality food and value. - galbijjim: delicious! the regular size portion could be enough for three people. The meat was perfect tenderness and nice cuts. The vegetables still had texture and the glass noodle soaked up the yummy sauce which had a good balanced flavor. Appreciated the attention to detail on making sure all parts of the cheese was torched and melted. Banchan was also better than alot of other spots!

The food was absolutely amazing! The service, however, was not so great. We can easily overlook the bad service when the food is this good!

Wow what a great place! Aesthetically pleasing, bright with enough natural lights, airy, clean and soft ambiance, low key elegance. Tastefully done dining room without looking like trying too hard. Everything in its place where they belong. I came for lunch today, came all the way from Nob Hill. I've been craving my old diet of eating raw meat of free range grass fed beef. Any kind of preparation of the raw beef actually, either French steak tartare, Ethiopian gored gored, kitfo, or even the most basic of it all Ethiopian kurt sega (also known as tere sega). I've been skeptical of finding any good one here in SF actually especially after eating a kitfo at the house of Tadu two weeks ago. These people need to go to DC and Northern VA to learn how to make Ethiopian food. Anyway, back to Hwa Mi Won. I finally found it, I finally find a great steak tartare of raw beef in the form of Korean Yukhoe. Incredible quality, textures, delicious and full of flavor. I was so happy! This dish is a must order, I think this was one of the best dish I've had so far this year beside my dish in Maui at Mama's Fish House with my GF. I also ordered a Combination Bone Soup (Modeum Tang). It was milky, creamy, and hot. (add little bit of salt to adjust the taste) I've had to order this even thought it's 85 degree outside. Very good but the Steak Tartare was something else entirely, A league of its own. Banchan were good but I came here for the raw meat not for the free side dish. I highly recommend this Non BBQ Korean restaurant for you who likes to eat Korean food of the Joseon (Chosun) era.

I've been so excited to try Hwa Mi Won after seeing this new Galbijim spot open up and I finally got a chance to go for lunch. I arrived with a few friends around 1pm on a Sunday and were happy to get seated right away. We ended up getting a large galbijim which comes with beef short ribs, vegetables, rice cakes, and 3 bowls of rice and a seoullongtang to share. The galbijim was absolutely delicious with super tender pieces of beef, chewy rice cakes, and soft carrots, potatoes and turnips. I almost wished we added on more rice cakes as they had the perfect texture and soaked up the sauce nicely. The large is definitely enough to feed 4 hungry people and we enjoyed the seoullongtang for a warm, comforting soup to share. Price-wise Hwa Mi Won is more affordable than other galbijim spots in the city and I loved the flavor of the sauce (not too sweet)! We'll definitely be back the next time we have a craving for galbijim. I only wish it was closer to downtown and that they give free refills on banchan.

My favorite Korean restaurant in SF. Galbijjim better than Daeho, Korean Hot Pot like you've never seen before, and an ambiance of a nicer Korean restaurant. All the portions here are pretty big, and you can definitely share a $80 galbijjim with 3-4 people. I love how all the beef is so tender, and all of the sauces/broths are flavorful. Whether it's the galbijjim, hotpot, galbitang, or anything else, you can't really go wrong. You also have a nice selection of banchan with some pretty delicious kimchi too! Service is attentive and you can ask for more of that delicious banchan as many times as you'd like. Will definitely come back and bring friends!

no misses but my favorite was the galbitang, the soup was super flavorful. they have a pepper based sauce that was really tasty too. all the beef across dishes were really tender. spice level 2 felt sufficiently spicy for me for the galbijjim to still be flavorful and enjoyable. it was practically empty when we walked in at saturday noon lol but people started trickling in afterwards. staff was nice but it was slightly of a struggle when we tried to get the fish cake banchan refilled.

One weekend evening, right before it opened I added myself to the waitlist on Yelp. Highly recommend that otherwise there will be a wait. The restaurant has a nice interior, good art. For items ordered, for two people we tried the: Beef Jang: Thin meat patty that was sweet like bulgogi, fried with rice paper or seemed like it. It was a bit hard to eat cause the beef patty would fall out. It had a sweet dipping sauce with it. Overall okay. Seollongtang: Got the combination one which comes with brisket duo, galbi, oxtail, beef tendon, cheek meat, wheat noodles and rich ox bone soup. Comes with a bowl of rice, purple or white rice. Noodles were overcooked, nice creamy broth, the meats were all good beside the beef rib which had a decent amount of connective tissue so hard to take the meet off with just a chopstick and spoon. Galbi Tang: Soup broth was a bit sweet when I got it, but by adding the salt it helped balance it. It came with tender boneless beef short rib meat, glass noodles, egg and then side of green onions to add. Got it with purple rice. It also came with a beef rib and had the same issue as the beef rib from the seollongtang. For the meal a side of banchan, fish cake, radish, cabbage kimchi, and cucumber salad were served. The favorite was the fish cake. Service was okay, not amazing since we were waiting a bit before the order was taken. But that's fine, food is good. Next time I am here, I will probably get one of the big pots they have such as a brisket pot or galbijim.

This place is sort of a cleaner and calmer version of Daeho. Maybe it's because they are relatively newer or it was just our timing? Without tasting them side by side or me being able to go to Daeho any time I want (far drive) so I have a recent memory of it, it's hard to say that the flavors of Hwa Mi Won's Galbijjim can't compare to Daeho. Off memory Daeho's Galbijjim was a bit more flavorful but Hwa Mi Won's beef was more tender. As for flavors that could be due to the varied spice levels depending on our group. What COULD give them the edge over Daeho is their Beef Tartare. I'm glad our server had recommended it.

It honestly felt like we were ordering with a friend who just happens to know the entire menu inside and out. She gave amazing recommendations and even told us she makes the hot sauce from scratch (which... you can taste the difference). That level of care really set the tone for the whole night. Now the food... not a single miss. Seriously, not one thing we didn't like. We went with the Ultra menu ($108), which includes lobster, and it was 100% worth it. For broths, we chose the Tom Yum and Tonkotsu. Both were rich, flavorful, and perfect in completely different ways. The meat selection was incredible, especially the wagyu options, they literally melt in your mouth. You can tell the quality is top tier. The flame-torched wagyu nigiri was absolutely out of this world--perfectly balanced and paired with a wasabi powder that elevated every bite. We also had the hamachi cloud, which was so fresh, flavorful, and had the perfect crunch--such a standout dish. And the spicy clams? Easily one of our favorites. Super fresh, super tasty, and packed with flavor. Beyond the food, the entire staff made us feel genuinely welcomed, which made the experience even better. The location is perfect. It's right in the center of Japantown. Inside they have a bar where you can sit and talk with the servers face-to-face. And it's a great spot to people watch while you eat. I truly cannot recommend this place enough. Between the incredible quality, the variety, and the next-level service. This is a spot I'll be coming back to again and again (and yes, I'll absolutely be asking for Irene).

The rolls came with 8 pieces each and each piece was a good size, so it was plenty for two of us. I also got a Sapporo beer (bottle) to sip on. Granted we were a bit late for our reservation, we ended up having to wait another 30-40 mins. The place (2nd floor) is small & awkward. You can also feel whenever the table next to us got up and stomped/yelled/moved in their chairs-- which was really often. The basic AYCE menu is fairly limited-- esp for the side options.
