I got to try Pang during their soft opening and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was full by about 6pm but the service remained attentive and efficient. The black sesame noodles were perfectly chewy and flavorful and the veggies added a nice freshness. A little bit of the vinegar and house chili oil also elevated the dish! As someone who can be picky with honey walnut shrimp, the mala honey walnut shrimp was so delicious! Not too mayo-heavy and the mala added a perfect touch of heat and flavor. The food was amazing! My favorites were definitely the Mapo Tofu Dip, Honey Walnut Shrimp, and XO fried rice with beef tendon. Fresh food with a wide selection of menu items to choose from. Food was delicious and they were able to accommodate my group. Great service with friendly staff and beautiful interior. While many things on the menu seem as if you can get it elsewhere at first glance, they really add their own personal twist and touch which sets it apart. For instance, green beans with the parmesan topping was nice and the sauce with the popcorn chicken was tasty. The chicken pieces were plump and fresh (not like the dried pieces you may get elsewhere). The friend rice was SO good (with the spicy beef tendon on top, wow) and the soup bases were also delicious. If you go with a large group, you can order a lot and taste more dishes. The crispy shrimp had a nice kick to it - the list of items to try go on and on. Came here with a friend for dinner on Friday and it was pretty busy but the line wasn't too bad. We ordered a few dishes to try. 1. Mapo tofu chip & dip - 4.5/5, we were pleasantly surprised by how good this was especially with the lotus root chip. 2. Cilantro pork salad - 3/5, this tasted very interesting and similar to eating hotpot sesame sauce lol. Wasn't super amazed by it. 3. String beans - 3.5/5, standard green beans but they added shaved Parmesan on top which kind of worked but again pretty standard nothing really amazing. 4. Braised beef noodle - 4/5, we thought this would have more broth. This was more like a saucy based noodle dish. We did like the flavor and enjoyed the elements of it but wanted something soupy. Nice new modern Chinese restaurant on Irving! The restaurant has a nice interior, bright and well decorated. They have some unique dishes on the menu and a lot of Chinese classics as well. I came at 5:15pm on a Friday as a party of 2 and was seated right away. But I hear the wait can get long if you come during peak dinner time. We ordered the mapo tofu dip, the black sesame noodles, the beef stew with noodles and the black sesame crème brûlée. Everything was good but we enjoyed the mapo tofu dip, the beef stew and the crème brûlée the most. The mapo tofu dip was flavorful and creative! It had the mapo tofu flavor but wasn't spicy. The beef stew was tender and delicious, and it came with a good amount of beef. The black sesame crème brûlée was great! They torch the sugar topping at the table, it was fun to get a little show. I've been watching pang closely since I saw the coming soon sign walking down 9th Ave a few months ago and I'm glad it's finally open - we can definitely use some neighborhood staples in the area! I came for their grand opening - service was a little awkward still, and the inside is clean, bright and modern. -scallion pancake beef roll ($12): this came out mostly cold (maybe slightly warm?) and was a little lacking in protein and veggie filling for us. It was also rather bland (which will be a theme here) and could have benefited from some housing sauce - I enjoyed it immensely more with the addition of their excellent (I'm assuming house made) chili crisp sauce. -black sesame noodles ($23): I was really looking forward to this since it's a unique take on the classic sesame or peanut butter mixed cold noodles I grew up eating, but while you can definitely taste the black sesame, the dish overall was still quite bland, and it still felt like something was missing even after adding the vinegar, soy, and chili oil available on the table. Again for the price the amount of protein and veggie felt a little lacking for us. -braised beef noodle soup, add tendon ($18 + $2): we got this spicy, and surprisingly it did have some heat! despite that... it was still somehow lacking flavor? This had a more generous amount of meat than the other dishes, but was overall not a memorable bowl of noodles. We were also given a complimentary dish of black sesame lava bun (normally $7 for 3) as part of the grand opening - these were good but seem to likely be premade and not too unique compared to what you would get at a typical dimsum place. Always looking to support a new neighborhood joint, I met up with my daughter at Pang for a quick bite. It's bright, clean and has plenty of tables at 4:30. I ordered a spicy beef tendon, which was chewy with a Sichuan kick to it. Collagen's good for my joints and my daughter didn't want any, so I had it by myself. She ordered dan dan noodles, which had a nice chewy texture and creamy sesame meat sauce, with a poached egg on top. We tried Pang on July 9 and it was a very busy Thursday for them. We put ourselves on the QR code list available onsite, and initially said 160 minutes but all in all we ended up waiting about 40 minutes, so don't lose faith! We were a group of four so we're able to try many dishes. The portions were generous and shareable. We had: 1) Mala tofu dip (they were running a promo, so this was free that evening) 2) honey walnut Mala shrimp - delicious, my favorite dish of the night - good fry on the shrimp and good flavor 3) beef pancake rolls - good but those who know the Sunset well would find these in line with what other restaurants serve 4) beef stew with tendon - good flavor but a tad salty so should eat this with rice 5) black sesame noodles - I know this is their signature dish but I didn't enjoy this. Their online reservation tool was a bit misleading or miscalculated and told us it was less than 5mins but we were willing to wait for their soft opening. I came here for dinner on Saturday. We waited around 30 minutes for our table, which wasn't bad. Once we got the notification that our table was ready, they had us wait another 5-10 minutes to get us seated. The restaurant's a decent size for SF and the modern light oak theme made the restaurant look very clean. Even though it was really busy, our waiter had the best attitude and was very kind. We tried the Three Treasures Stir Fry, DIY Scallion Pancake Roll, and Mapo Tofu Chip n Dip. The Three Treasures Stir Fry had very nice textures from the lotus and mushroom, but I thought it was a tad too salty and umami. The rice didn't balance it out too well, leaving the sauce to be overwhelming. The DIY Scallion Pancake Roll was a cool concept but the pancake was quite disappointing. The pancake was too salty and had barely any scallions. The portion of meat to the pancakes was a bit off, way too much pancake and slice of meat was a bit thin. The Mapo Tofu Chip n Dip was honestly the best out of the three dishes. It tasted just like mapo tofu and loved the blended up tofu. I did really like how all the dishes came out piping hot! However, the quality of the dishes we got was definitely lower than expectations, not sure if it's worth the price we paid. Especially because SF has so many high quality authentic spots for Chinese food, the par is definitely higher for this cuisine. I first tried to come to Pàng on a Wednesday only to discover the restaurant is closed that day. Well luckily, I was able to come back over the weekend. The place was super packed, so my friend put us on the waitlist, and at the time, there was only one group ahead of us. After maybe 15-20 minutes we were seated at a small table between others. We took a few minutes to check out the menu and settled on the cucumber salad, Shanghai bok choy, scallion pancake beef roll, and black sesame beef noodles. A waiter came by to take our order promptly, and the foods all arrived soon in quick succession. I felt like the cucumber salad and Shanghai bok choy were very standard for what they were. The scallion pancake beef roll and black sesame beef noodles stood out to me more. The scallion pancake was quite 胖 (pàng) - probably one of the thicccest I've ever had, not thin and crispy like traditional scallion pancakes, but I liked Pàng's take on it. The end piece didn't have much beef, so it was mostly pancake, but the interior pieces were stuffed full. The black sesame beef noodles were the star of the show, or in our case, table. My friend and I kept reaching for more of these yummy, gooey, savory noods topped with thinly sliced beef. If I could recommend just one thing, it would definitely be this dish. My friend remarked that Pàng's food feels homecooked and established in the neighborhood even though the restaurant is currently in soft launch, and I agree with him, as it totally encompasses the vibes Pàng is going for. I was here for their soft opening, and there was a wait-list (60-80 minutes for two people on a Friday at 5:30pm). There was a small crowd outside the entrance the entire time my party was eating inside, so plan ahead. Service was okay. We had to flag down the servers a few times as they looked a bit busy, but staff were friendly with the few brief interactions we had. We ordered the popcorn chicken, dan dan noodles, mala dumplings, scallion pancake beef roll, and a braised beef noodle soup. This ended up being a bit more than enough food for two people and we ended up with a small box of leftovers. They do have a drink and small dessert menu too. Popcorn chicken was crispy, larger than I expected with a tangy sauce (maybe good as an appetizer for sharing up to 3 people). The dan dan noodles were good, with a lovely flavor. I thought they were good but my dining buddy said they were great. The dumplings were nice dumplings but missed the mala part of the flavor. The scallion beef pancake was crispy, flavorful, but dry (wish it had a tad more sauce or similar on it) it is like an odd burrito, which I ended up tearing into smaller pieces to eat. We got the braised beef noodle soup without the tendon. Hot, flavorful, and nicely sliced beef. The noodles looked the same as the ones in the dan dan and worked less well in a hot broth (but were fine for the dan dan). I'm glad we got the soup, as I ended up dipping most stuff into the soup for a bit more flavor. Everything here was good, but nothing was a standout to recommend. This area can be a bit challenging to find parking but park a few blocks away and just have a nice stroll down to the restaurant. The restaurant itself is not that big, about 40 people. They have about 4 to 5 waitstaff and we didn't have any issues with refilling water or asking for extra napkins. Pang can be thought of as an upscale dumpling house with modern flare. For apps, start with the Fried Taro and Fried Wonton chips with a ma-po tofu dipping. the fried taro had a few pieces that was soggy. For the ma-po tofu sauce, pinch less salt would've been perfect and the way they made it, it would've worked best over rice. Their chili sauce was a bit on the mild side but perfect for those who want a hint of spice without burning their tongue. The dumplings were flavorful but we also tried something different; their ma-po tofu flavor dumpling was my favorite of their dumplings. Now if they were able to incorporate some actual tofu it would be a home run. The tomato and egg noodle is straight out comfort food and perfect in all ways.. Their beef roll is standard compare to other places but was very good nonetheless. A must try here is their honey walnut shrimp. Full of flavor, crispy and juicy when you bite into it. The other folks in our group loved their dan dan noodles (I'm not a peanut sauce guy) and I'll take their word that it was good. For dessert, the standard fried bun with various dipping (custard, matcha and condensed milk) is best pair with a beer. The best flavor came out if you dip the custard and matcha with the condensed milk but if you're not a fried bun person, hands down go for their black sesame Crème brûlée. The food was mixed - The beef noodle soup was decent. I liked the portion of meat. I also added the tendon for $2, and it was all cooked well. The noodles were just okay. The broth was authentic, but it tasted like something was missing to give it a deeper flavor - I liked the one at Bei Fang Style Restaurant more. The shrimp & chive dumplings were bad. Dumplings are hard to mess up, but you can see in the picture here how little shrimp is in it from cutting into one. They should just call it a chive dumpling. Went during the soft opening and was impressed overall. The food was really good, and I'm excited to come back and try more of the menu. We ordered the Mapo Tofu Dip, which was the standout dish of the meal. The Hot and Sour Soup was also flavorful and well-executed. We also tried the soup dumplings, which were a bit disappointing. The wrappers were slightly doughy and chewy, and there wasn't as much soup inside as we expected. The service felt a little awkward at times, which is understandable during a soft opening, but there are a few details that could be improved before the official launch. For example, when the soup was served, we weren't given soup spoons and had to ask for them afterward. Overall, the food showed a lot of promise, especially some of the signature dishes. With a few refinements to both the service and certain menu items, I think this place has the potential to become a great addition to the neighborhood. We stumbled upon the soft opening, and waited about 30m for our 2-person table. They have a waiting system where they will text you when your table is ready, which makes the wait much more bearable and there are enough around Irving St to keep us busy while we wait. We got two appetizers (Chili oil wontons & mapo tofu chip 'n dip), chicken & corn dumplings, and the tomato egg noodle soup. The two appetizers were tasty, and the chip & dip was particularly inventive. I really enjoyed the texture of the crispy taro chips against the pasty mapo tofu dip. It works really well. The tomato egg noodle soup was the highlight for me. Other places often do this dish with a heavy tomato flavor and sometimes even supplement it with ketchup sauce, which really overpowers the other flavors. Pàng's version is savory and all the flavors are very well balanced. For us, the chicken & corn dumplings was the only forgettable dish. Pretty standard and more dedicated dumpling restaurants definitely do it better. All in all a tasty meal, and I would definitely come back to try other dishes. read more

The overall experience was a little disappointing. The Chive and Shrimp dumplings were maybe 80% chives, while the rest was dough and shrimp. I personally would have liked less chives, as the taste was a little overpowering. I also ordered the Three Treasures Stir Fry, which was not bad but very bland. I can confidently say that my friends and I will never come back to this restaurant. We were in the mood to try something new and the Black Sesame noodle caught our eye. We got on the waitlist and we were told we'd be seated in 25-40 minutes. We ended up waiting an hour. Whenever I asked the server how much longer, he kept repeating, "only a few more minutes." When we finally sat down, we were finally excited to try the Black Sesame noodle but they told us it was sold out within the last hour. This was super disappointing since it was 8pm and we waited over an hour. We then ordered the ginger scallion noodles, and they came back five minutes later to say they're out of it. At this point, we're pretty frustrated. We had to ask the server for water too after 15 minutes of waiting. We end up ordering: Fried rice Scallion pancakes Mapo tofu dip Popcorn chicken Dandan tofu noodles Tofu chow fun Honey walnut shrimp The food was subpar. It lacked flavor, an ounce of seasoning, and just incredibly underwhelming. The only thing I would order again is the fried rice. The scallion pancakes had little to no scallions! I'm just completely dumbfounded by that. The popcorn chicken was a downer- overly salty and the sauce was not good. My friends and I were expecting the tingly sensation we usually get from mapo tofu but it was completely absent from the dip! It was so bland and disappointing. Half of the chips were also burnt and hidden at the bottom. The worst thing was the Dandan noodles... it was so unpleasant. And for the grand finale - our honey walnut shrimp never came! We got: - scallion pancake beef roll - This was my favorite dish of the night, well executed beef pancake roll although fewer pieces (4) than I was expecting. - mapo tofu chip n' dip - Sounded so good, but unfortunately didn't work for me. I didn't like the flavor of the mapo sauce (there was some spice in it that I found overwhelming) and the lotus root chips were a bit limp. - black sesame noodles - Again sounds great in theory, but the flavor of black sesame with the noodles just somehow didn't work for me. I also didn't like the beef (found it a bit chewy and flavorless) - garlic soy steamed okra - This was the one thing we ordered that wasn't in any influencer content, and was a surprise winner. look, im not one to write really scathing reviews and generally I want to support restaurants, especially new restaurants that are up and coming, but i really should have read the reviews before coming here because I think this was one of the most disappointing / worst meals i've had in a while. especially in a city with really good chinese ( and varied chinese, i'm thinking four kings, taishan cuisine, happy family gourment, literally everywhere else in the richmond and the sunset), i had high expectations for this place. we got quite a few things, which you can see listed below. I will say that the portions to price feels a bit weird, especially given that it feels like its priced more like a slightly more higher end version of everything, but when I saw that the green beans had parmesan on it, I was like okay? we also had a bit of a wait but i'm not faulting the restaurant for that at all! honestly im so glad that its been so busy and so popping which shows how much the community wants to support these kinds of restaurants. some things i love: - the menu design and the ethos!! look, that menu was really cute and the desserts looked really good. I appreciated how they have a really particular focus on what they're trying to do and how the name leans into it - the ceramics - the chili oil was REALLY GOOD and needs to be spicier and also sold separately - the shirts and the general vibes of the servers and who i'm presuming the owner is really good. to the owners, if you're reading this (yes im adding this disclaimer because i've had a few responses LOL) - all of the flavors of the dishes felt muted, a bit incohesive, and the xo fried rice smelled fishy (in not a good way). I would encourage you to go back to find the original versions of these flavors, and ask what really makes these dishes sing, and then reincorporate new versions. for me, personally, the wontons were the best but also compared to something like dumpling home in hayes was no comparison (missing bounce, missing chili, missing a hint of sweetness) - re service: I think the firing order of dishes felt off. I know that this is a NEW RESTAURANT and SOFT OPENING so obvious there is some slack to cut, but if you're pacing it as an apps to entrees situation, the food should come out in that way. we got the rolls last (which should be fast as a line item? considering that most items should be prepped and the dough just needs to be fried) both the bing and the chicken were NOT crispy which was pretty disheartening - I would investigate a different color of lighting, and also perhaps add table lighting. if you've made it to the end of this review, I would caution against going for a good chinese meal until some fundamentals have been investigated to be quite honest. i'm also partially writing this review because maybe im really old man curmudgeon-y coded but I'm sick of everything on yelp being like wow! this was really good! and being used as this blase online forum. sometimes you want to read a brutally honest review. so here it is. read more

Was left disappointed with the meal here. Was excited to have a new spot to try out and was hoping they'd do well, but the dishes all left me puzzled. It felt like they were scared of adding authenticity to their dishes. Everything tasted lackluster or strange. We tried the spicy beef noodles with tendon, dan dan noodles, beef pancake roll, and mapo tofu dip. The mapo tofu dip came out cold, which I imagine was a choice, but it just made it taste like some old forgotten dish with cold meat and congealed oil. The beef pancake roll had decent flavor but the pancake was not flakey or hot. The beef noodles were fine, but wished the noodles could be bouncier. And the dan dan noodles had plenty of sesame paste, but didn't have much mala spice to it. Everything was salvaged by adding spoonfuls of their chili oil, which was possibly the best thing there. Perhaps they're trying to be more inclusive with different palates, but if you're looking for an authentic taste, this isn't it. read more

Pang is marketed as a restaurant covering the Chinese-American diaspora. We were really excited to try it out, but were ultimately disappointed. Food: The menu can more or less be divided into two categories. Chinese classics and modern takes. The prices are hefty, so we decided to opt for more modern dishes (as they are more unique). We ordered the beef noodle soup, the mapo tofu chip and dip, and the black sesame noodles. * Beef Noodle Soup: They make their own noodles. Texture is great, soup is too salty. * Mapo Tofu Chip and Dip: The chips (lotus root and wonton) don't taste freshly fried, the texture is a bit soggy. The tofu sauce is too runny for chips that have gigantic holes in them. And also, way too salty! I think it's a heavy on heavy combo that could benefit from some more complex flavors... I think the chip with poke or something would be great. * Black Sesame noodles: I don't love black sesame, but I found the nutty flavor pleasant, though quite light... I could have used about double the amount of sesame flavor. Again, the noodles had a great bouncy texture. The torched meat had an interesting flavor, but I found it unpleasant when paired with the black sesame sauce. Vibes/Service: The space is super cute, no wait at 6pm on a Monday - though the food trivia on the waitlist is fun. Overall I don't see myself coming back, and I'd also not recommend to my friends to come here unless they do a major overhaul of the menu :( read more

Go to Panda Express. I don't even know what to tell you. We ordered 6 dishes: - Cilantro pork salad: tastes exactly like the Dan Dan noodles, oh wait! There is no taste. - Mapo tofu chips n dips: chips were good. Tofu dip or whatever is like a hummus texture but whatever seasoning that was, no. Should've just poured the chili sauce people had on the table into that dish. - Mala pork dumplings: it's not Mala, it's just cumin. - Dan Dan noodles: tastes like the cilantro pork salad, no taste. - Black sesame noodles: out of all these dishes this one was actually edible. Except the beef was a weird soft texture....it was giving tenderizer, not "I was cooked for 24hrs." - Shanghai pan fried (whatever): supposedly made to order fresh. Not crunchy, not even crisp. 90% bread, 10% meat (that's being generous......) The best tasting thing I had that night was the jar of chili oil sitting on our table. Left full because we didn't want to waste but definitely did not leave joyful and satisfied. Many people ordered the walnut shrimp so maybe you can try that. Anyway, save your coins, get a slice of pizza or something. You'd be so much happier. 2 stars for friendly staff, and let me sit down at a table for 20mins waiting for my friends to arrive. read more

The service was great, 3rd day of opening and already able to keep the restaurant busy. Had their DanDan Noodles and they were great, in my opinion add a little bit of chili oil to cancel or switch up the flavor of sesame. The portion sizes are pretty decent, but it comes with value as this is a very affordable place. MUST GET THE Fried Mantou as dessert comes with three sweet dipping sauces and with the Jasmine Pearl Tea it really is an absolute best way to finish a great dinner! The tea costs $5 for a pot and the flavors are amazing. Definitely a new upcoming must try spot close to Irving. read more

The food was so so good, everything was so flavorful and unique. My favorites were definitely the Mapo Tofu Chip n' Dip and Honey Walnut Shrimp. The Mapo Tofu dip was unique, yet familiar. The tofu was nutty, but not overpowering and went super well with the lotus root and wonton chips. The Honey Walnut Shrimp was probably the best Honey Walnut Shrimp I'd ever had. It was so perfectly crispy and sweet, but didn't feel too heavy either. All the other dishes were also super yummy!! The wontons and dumplings were juicy. The black sesame noodles were an innovative take on dan dan mian. The beef Chow fun had SUPER tender beef and wasn't too oily. And even though we were super full, the black sesame crème brûlée still stole the show and was a great way to end the night!! It wasn't too sweet and reminded us of the black sesame soup from childhood. All super good and I definitely wanna go back to try everything else on the menu :D read more
