GET THE MENTAIKO CREAM SAUCE UDON!!! Seriously, THE BEST THING YOU'LL EVER EAT! The noodles were so delicious with the creamy mentaiko sauce--I'm already craving it again! Service was great and the ambiance was really nice. The restaurant is located inside Japan Center Malls, so just a heads-up that the restroom is outside in the communal area. But seriously... get the mentaiko cream udon!!!

Had a wonderful experience with our server Jeff. We had sake, udon and tempura shrimp. Jeff's knowledge and description of the sake was appreciated. The shrimp tempura was almost as good as what we had in Kyoto. Maybe the best we've had stateside. Wished we had more room for food and we will be back!

It's so good! And really popular. Portions are big, prices are reasonable, and everyone is friendly and will have good recommendations for menu items. The udon was great and so was the katsu. Nice interior as well.

The staff was very friendly and has great hospitality service, which i think its a huge role in food industry. I ordered the Tonkotsu Undon and my buddy ordered the Salmon Spinach Cream Sauce Udon. Both udon were amazing and so rich in flavors. I would definitely come back here and try other udon dishes!

One of the best places to get udon that tastes like Japan. There is a long line, but you can get on the waitlist before. Jeff was great! The service is very fast and our food came out within minutes. It is very busy so it can be a bit loud inside. But after eating, just a lot to do after work like going shopping across the restaurant. The mentai cream sauce udon is very good. It's very creamy and refreshing. I would definitely come get this again. Spicy Niku cold udon is also very good. It is quite spicy, but very good. The cold sauce is also a great pairing with it.

Quick to be seated on a Sunday afternoon. Food is always tasty, and the service today was great. Janny was kind, attentive, and quick while they helped us throughout the meal. 5 stars for Janny!

I think this is a great shop however it might not exactly be for me because of one thing. I ordered the tonkotsu and I think that they seem to have used some sort of dashi broth with a little too much smoked flavor for my liking. I think that the smoke flavor distracted too much from the natural smoothness and sweetness that tonkotsu is supposed to have. However the portions were generous and the product was overall of very high quality, so I'm still rating it 5 stars on those merits alone, just not my cup of tea.

This place is super popular so make sure you get on the waitlist right away. I love this place because they are super kid-friendly and have all the utensils you would need. You can even ask for kid scissors, which is what my daughter always wants whenever she eats her tempura udon so she can cut her shrimp and udon into smaller bites. There's a lot of seating for parties between 2-4 although I have seen parties of 6 before. Jenny was our server and she was amazing, our food came out super fast too. My favorite dish and recommendation is the mentai cream sauce udon because there's so many chunks of seafood goodness. Definitely a must try.

Our go to udon spot in the city! Can't really go wrong with any item on the menu. Food 5/5: they make their udon fresh in house every day, I particularly love the cold udon here because you really get the full textual experience of chewiness. That's why I got the Zaru udon, it's served over ice and you dip it in the noodle sauce with toppings. My partner got the mentaiko udon and it was nice and creamy and savory from the fish roe. We also got the crispy onigiri that came topped with a heaping portion of chasu. The rice was perfectly crispy on the outside and still soft moist inside, pair well with the chasu for a snack. Service 4/5: fast and efficient not too much to note besides that they seem to always be busy and you do need to wave them down if you need help. Ambiance 5/5: nicely furnished inside to give it really an intimate vibe while feeling authentic to the Japanese decoration.

Delicious! Enter Yelp waitlist on weekday at 6:20, took 25 minutes to get a table. All guests need to be there to be seated. The space is somewhat small, has still fits plenty of customers. Simple menu! I love that there's a Udon noodles and rice dish combo. The creamy mental was good, but got really creamy. Tonkatsu udon had great flavor, just solid choice for soup. Most dishes range from $19.50 - $22 which is reasonable for really delicious food. Overall, yummy udon and a lot to offer for guests.

Food (5/5): Ordered a regular sized mentaiko udon, assorted tempura and the crispy onigiri bites. The onigiri bite was solid with nice crispy rice but could've had more meat. The mentaiko udon was delicious and had a nice creamy flavor. The tempura were decent. Service (4/5): Wait time was crazy for this place as we waited over an hour. We actually ate at the nearby skewer place beforehand because that opened up earlier. The nice thing is that you're on an online yelp wait-list so you can get in line over the app and walk around while waiting. Ambiance (5/5): Nice wooden interior with beautiful Japanese decor. Very busy on a Sunday but overall really nice traditional Japanese vibe.

Mugizo is one of the best options in Japantown. Always tasty and service is always excellent! Got the spicy Niku bakkake udon tonight. Was excellent! All the flavors worked together, and the spice level really came through. I've tried the curry udon, cream and tonkotsu and all are excellent options. Waiter was Jeff tonight and he was excellent! Overall: 4.8/5

AMAZING food and experience!!!! Jane made our experience really great and was a great server. Ordered the tonkatsu udon - delicious savory broth but not too rich. We also loved the agedashi tofu and pumpkin tempura! Will definitely be back!!

Any way to make reservations?

There is a check-in podium and the line generally moves quickly except peak times (weekends and holidays).

Do they still sell cold soba?

No not anymore. It is no longer on their menu.

Do they still sell Salmon Cream Udon at the Japan Town location?

Yes, still they are selling it at there

Do they still have the Chicken Kinoko cream sauce udon?

I ate there last week. It wasn't on their menu.

Hi! Are there any gluten-free items on the menu?

Yes the soba noodle dishes are gluten free

Why can we no longer waitlist using the app? It worked fine pre-Covid, but was removed sometime after March 2020.

Thanks for your question. We faced many customers who used waitlist app actullay didn't show up. This will bother other customers as well. So, we decided to ask customers to…

How is the waitlist on a Thursday?

If you go before afterwork hours there usually isn't a waitlist. But other than that, Thursdays generally aren't bad at all

Do they have outdoor seating?

They do not have outdoor seating. They are actually located inside the Japantown plaza.

Do they still sell the uni udon?

Yes, I just had it a week ago. 10/2/21

Tried calling to make a reservation, but no one picked up. Do they actually take reservations?

I don't believe they can take reservations. It's a really fast moving place and you sign up either online or in person on the wait list. The wait list is electronic.

I decided on their cold soba with shrimp kakiage and vegetable tempura. Heavenly! Their tempura batter is whisper light and crisp. My favorite surprise was a piece of crab tempura tucked into my selection. We ended our meal mixing in the hot soba broth. I would definitely return, and hope for a shorter wait!

You self order at a kiosk and seat yourself. There are two people cooking everything from scratch in the open kitchen and they'll call your number when your food is ready. I advise coming before they open as my friend and I came 15 minutes before they opened on a random Wednesday and there were already 5 others ahead of us. If you miss the first seating, you'll have to wait 45 min until someone finishes and leaves. We decided to share one cold soba with shrimp tempura and veggies in addition to the spicy dipping broth. It was delicious!! If you aren't a big eater, one order is definitely enough to share. The soba portion is quite generous. The tempura is made-to-order and really crunchy. I'm excited to come back and try their scallop kakiage. The spicy broth was really good with a hint of yuzu so if you like spicy food, I'd recommend adding that as a side item. It's a "cozy" restaurant so you might be sharing a table with another party. I'd come solo or even at most with one other person to have the best opportunity to sit each other.

There was a remarkably…read morelong line, but I decided to get in it thinking I could order quick, chow down, and be on my way. Alas! it was not to be, as I had to meet up with my group, and the line only moved in smidges. The intervening years visiting SF didn't provide me with any opportune moments to stop by. That is, until one Saturday evening August 2026 while I was walking around and by chance happened upon the same lovely scent. Although it was a few minutes before 11pm, the line to get in was closed off. Tomorrow was my last night in SF, so I made it my primary objective to dine here. Well, Sunday I was at the Chase Center till about 9:20pm where the Muni line was packed and going nowhere fast. In the spur of the moment, I ran all the way from Chase Center to Lower Nob Hill, a 2.3-mile journey, yielding to red lights and Pokémon fans. Exhausted, it was a couple minutes past 10pm when I arrived. Lo and behold, the line had not closed yet. Ordered their Signature Toripaitan ramen and was very pleased that it was ready in about two minutes. I'm not afraid to admit I literally vacuumed the contents of that bowl. Sure I was sweaty and famished, but the combination of chashu, menma, burdock root, ajitama egg, chicken broth, and every other element checked all my proverbial boxes. The waitstaff who took my order was likely aghast that I ate so violently, though she was professional and responded energetically when I showered her with thanks and praise for the meal. I also ordered a mazemen to-go for the next day's lunch, and that was a real treat. Recently, I learned that there is a location in Culver City. Heck, why wait another 8 years?

The line was twice as long at 830pm, so would recommend coming earlier. Service was very quick, food came in less than 10 minutes. I really enjoyed the TKO Ramen as compared to the Classic Toripaitan it was more unique and flavorful. If you want something you can only get here, I'd go for the more unique options like TKO. For the TKO, they really packed it with garlic and the fried carrots paired very well. The Classic Toripaitan was delicious, but more similar to Ramen you get elsewhere. Love the chewy noodle. Portions are on the smaller side. Given the small restaurant, would recommend coming here as a smaller group. Parking is pretty easy since there's usually street parking around the block.

Granted, we came in around 9 PM, about an hour before closing, so we understood that the kitchen was getting toward the end of the night. We ordered a few dishes to share and there were actually some highlights. The scallops: These were great! Easily one of the better dishes we ordered. The karaage chicken: The chicken itself had great flavor, but the creamy sauce on top was extremely rich and ended up overpowering the chicken. I think with less sauce, this could have been a really good dish. Now, the ramen: This is where I was genuinely left speechless. I don't think I've ever had ramen with absolutely no umami. Like, none. It was one of the strangest things I've ever tasted. I was biting into something, there were textures in my mouth, it smelled great... but that was it. No depth. No richness. No umami. The broth, meat, and even the noodles somehow had almost no flavor. The only thing that really came through was the greasy chili oil that lingered on your tongue afterward. After a couple of bites, we looked at each other and decided to leave. At that point, most of the food was still sitting on the table practically untouched. Maybe we caught the kitchen on an off night, especially coming in later in the evening. The scallops showed us that there's definitely potential here, but unfortunately, the ramen was such a miss that it overshadowed the rest of the meal for us.
