We made a reservation in advance and that got us seated upstairs, where you can also dine but it's fine to only order drinks. The bar is downstairs and you walk through it and up the stairs to get to the upstairs dining area. The restrooms are back downstairs so keep that in mind. At the door, you show your ID before you enter. The server was really helpful and friendly. We perused the menu, which was a book of photographs, with great descriptions of the drinks and the photos of San Francisco culture. It was hard to choose only one drink because they all had interesting ingredients. The ice in my drink had words inscribed in it. That was really cool (literally); I've never seen that effect before in a cocktail. The drinks were nice and if you don't want a cocktail, they also have root beer, beer and wine. The table next to us ordered the kale salad and it was piled high so we had to order that too but we got it to go, along with the fries, which were delicious.
Trick Dog was ranked #100 on 2026 North America's 50 Best Bars. We liked it here so much we came back twice during our trip in SF. For drinks we ordered the Oaxacan Carnival, SoMa, Urban Canine and Trick Dog. My favorite was the Oaxacan cocktail, and it's what I got again when we came back the second time. For food we ordered bao buns, french fries, cauliflower, and the trick nuggets. The nuggets were so good and crispy I ordered them again when we came back. The only downside is the space is a bit small and it can get crowded. The service was also slow at times and was difficult to get the attention of the bartenders, but the drinks and food made up for it. And even though it was crowded, it felt fun and I loved the music they were playing. The menu design being like a photography book was also really cool, and my boyfriend even bought one to keep.
This place is AMAZING - 10/10! Not only did all of the drinks taste great, they were also really cool looking. We ordered the Ocean Park, Dolores, SoMa, and Oaxaca Carnaval. The bartender was great - we didn't know what to order and she was super helpful. For food... where do I even begin? The Famous Kale Salad - I now understand why it's famous. So freaking good! It's a big portion, but it was so good we ate the whole thing. We also ordered the Trick Nuggets and the Mission Dog. The nuggets were good but nothing extraordinary. But the Mission Dog - OUT OF THIS WORLD FANTASTIC! The bar has both indoor and outdoor seating, we sat at the bar. Their menu is super cute - it has pictures of San Francisco for each menu item, and you can actually purchase the menu. We did! Definitely coming back.
This is a world famous SF institution that's definitely worth a visit. Their cocktails are creative and one of a kind. Be sure to read through them all and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations, as there could be some that aren't to your taste. And don't sleep on their food, which can be quite hearty and delicious. This place can be quite busy, so be patient for a good seat.
Absolutely love the creativity and energy behind this bar. Trick dog changes up their menu every half year, and they go all out with the concept. I went recently and the theme is Meet Me in the City (photography + cocktails) and I felt like I was perusing a photography book when looking at the menu. Pictured below was their circus theme from last year. There's always a cocktail or two that I like, and they have a good range from classics to creative twists. The chicken nuggets are also delicious lol. There are two floors in this bar, with a chill dining area on top and more of a normal bar / loud music scenario on the bottom. Love that you can pick your vibe and run with it (although the dining area does close after a certain hour). Drinks are pretty fast even when it's busy, and overall a good time
Trick dog is a great local bar especially for after work drinks. I can't speak too much to the cocktails but I've gotten wine and beer here. This time tried the pickle beer, I love pickles so this one wa really interesting. They also have a selection of food which is great, all their sandwiches are on hot dog buns so it's kinda funny! But this place is definitely on the pricier side. It's also pretty frequently super packed at times I can't really stay long because people are legit shoulder to shoulder. I mean no fault of the bars that just shows it's popular but definitely not a place to chill and chat since it's so busy.
Revolving, inventive cocktail menu. Always enjoy the theme of the drinks and menu. Their bar bites are surprisingly very tasty...the nuggets, burger and kale salad are solid. Dog friendly as well!
Drinks are great as always. One of the bartenders was unnecessarily rude to me (it was 4:05pm) and that really soured my experience after being a fan of Trick Dog for years. Not coming back until the aggression subsides. Saturday afternoons aren't meant for unwarranted passive aggressive service.
After hearing so many rave reviews of this place, I'm truly disappointed with my experience. I love the quirky menus and the neighborhood the restaurant sits in. But where Trick Dog fell flat for me, was the service. It was extremely hard to order as the bar gets very rowdy and bartenders take their time making drinks. I'm especially disappointed that the bartender failed to mention that one of our drinks was non-alcoholic. It was in the fine print of the menu, and I only noticed when I went back to admire how beautiful the menu was. Extremely disappointed that I wasn't given a heads up, given that the drink costs the same, and are highly overpriced.
My crew and I wanted to find a bar nearby and I found Trick Dog open until 2AM! Their kitchen was still open until midnight so we wanted to grab food as well! It's almost like a club but a bar too. The music they were playing 11/29 was popping with a lot of throwbacks (Alice Deejay, Venga Boys). The bar is pretty intimate and not really good for groups but lucky we were only a group of 3 and found space at the bar. The drinks are super unique (see photo). Not overly sweet and the alcohol isn't too harsh. Once midnight hit, the bar announced it was one of the bartender's birthdays! Pacho?? So wholesome to see the workers announce this and the whole bar sang happy birthday to him. What a cool community Trick Dog has created! The vibes are chill and I would recommend if you're in the area! I'd love to come back to try the famous kale salad though haha
We stopped here for a quick drink on the way to dinner! The menu was so fun and had a lot of Asian inspiration. We needed a pick me up so we went for their version of espresso martini! We couldn't stop talking about the ube foam! Super fun. Did not need a reservation and was able to order at the bar. Bartenders were super friendly. Music was good too!
I've given this restaurant many tries over the last several years, and honestly, it's always fell short. Normally it's super crowded, like shoulder to shoulder. The ambiance is pretty rough BUT the bar tenders are all great and very attentive. They do their job well, this review has NOTHING to do about them. It's more about the drinks Although I've never had the food there, the drinks are ... okay. They are really pricy (~20$) and For a 20$ drink I'd expect more. We had an ube drink and some kind of tequila drink? It was sour and the ube drink was something i could make at home. TLDR not my favorite place for a drink, go around the corner for better drinks at true laurel. But it was Monday night and we were out of options soo yeah
I used to love this spot, I've enjoyed my cocktails although they are $20. The service is just awful. Waited ~20 minutes while the bartender looked through me as if I was an invisible. As I said, may I also get some fr-- the bartender held up 2 fingers cutting me off and said "I'm not taking any more orders right now" and then took someone else's drink order. It was wild. I've had rude service from this same bartender repeatedly so I won't be back. Lost resort down the block has the most friendly staff!
Fun experience here. We sat at the bar, and I overheard many customers asking who's working or customers greeting the staff. Definitely felt like the staff is well known in this neighborhood and has a lot of regular customers. Great to see. The menu is awesome. Very cool and caught me by surprise as I grew up as a wrestling fan. It felt nostalgic and made it fun to choose a drink. It seemed like a seasonal or rotating menu since I heard the bartender say this was our new menu. The Andre the Giant drink was the best of the three we ordered (Roddy Rowdy Piper and Rey Mysterio). The charred cabbage was great. Never thought I would order a cabbage dish, but the description made it appetizing. They also played great classic hip hop music. read more
Came here for a fun night out with friends who were in town and loved the creative and unique drink offerings. When I heard they had a fish sauce cocktail, I had to try it! Surprisingly enough, I really enjoyed my drink and finished it within minutes. I loved the creativity behind the drink, and all the flavors came together really well. Service - friendly and attentive even with the crowds! Friend was able grab reservations for a table upstairs- it's a big spot that can get a little confusing if you're drinking! Bathrooms - downstairs, there are signs but can be confusing. Multiple stalls for both the restrooms split- men/non binary and women/non binary- love that. Drinks were super fun and creative- especially the menu!! I really liked the HHH with the ice cream top! Rowdy Roddy Piper was super tasty too- kind of reminded me of a dirty tea with the dirty being the alcohol! Heh Food was good too- I loved the fries. Perfectly crispy and those edges mmHMM. Trick Dog is a popular, recognized cocktail bar that has drinks downstairs and a restaurant upstairs. They currently have a near space-themed menu with some unique creations. The Little Bee Hive was out there - comes in an astronaut cup with a chicharrone and the bbq flavor pops at the end which was more potent than I expected so not for me as a gimmick. Mexican Jumping Star was good - get the yuzu flavor with the tequila making for a very fair drink. Dolphin Head was alright and certainly bubbly from the sparkling wine. This is definitely one of the coolest bars in the world..there is great reason this place is always winning awards and making "best of" lists. My favorite part about this experience? THE MENUS!! I know that sounds odd but they change up their theme every so often (so you have to keep coming back!!) and the menus are always so fun! Current theme is space and the menu looks like a space ship's control panel :)) Now the drinks..like delicious little experiments! I've had color changing drinks, drinks with jellies, most recently, a drink served with fried pork skin. And the glassware is always enviable; on point with the current theme. Great spot for drinks and light bites! We ordered the martini flight, which felt like a steal for $39. They were very strong and delicious, so you definitely get your money's worth! We also ordered the veggie nuggets, fries, and kale salad. I am not a vegetarian but I was surprised by how yummy and filling the veggie nuggets were. Plus the kale salad came in a very generous portion, which always makes me happy. All in all, I would definitely recommend and would come back to try more of their cocktails! read more

We visited during the Circus menu and sampled several cocktails. As expected with a concept that evolves frequently, the quality and balance of the drinks varied. Some offerings were well-executed and enjoyable, while others leaned more heavily on novelty than finesse. For instance, the Human Dartboard was a standout -- refreshing and vegetal, topped with a clever cheese foam that added both texture and intrigue. In contrast, the Glass Walker opened with aggressively savory notes that made the first sip jarring; while it became slightly more approachable with subsequent sips, the overall balance felt off. Trick Dog continues to impress with its ambition and originality, but some drinks could benefit from a bit more nuance. At times, the concepts feel more literal than layered -- bold in idea, but lacking the subtlety that makes a cocktail truly memorable. read more

This is the 7th menu I've had here and the drinks are consistently solid, with creative and unique options (and the kale salad is ALWAYS delicious). The staff also has good recs depending on what you are feeling. Came at 5:30 PM on a Tuesday this time around and we were able to be seated upstairs for 4 people without a wait or a reservation. The ambiance was lively without being too loud--the noise level tends to get quite high later on. The current theme is such a wonderful love letter to SF, and the book was fun to flip through + you can tell a lot of work was put into making it. Great option for drinks in the Mission and always looking forward to what the team comes up with next. read more
Reviewing Tricks Dog's AAPI Cocktail Week event: Asian Invasion Arrived about 20 min after the start of event (6:20pm) and had to wait in line for about 15 min outside the venue. Staff were super friendly and explained they wanted to make sure bartenders weren't overwhelmed by crowds. Once we were inside it was definitely full, but we were able to get our drinks within 10-15 min. The menu for AAPI cocktail week was fun, filled with unique drinks from guest bartenders and we were tempted to try them all! Highlights from the night included Manila gold (whiskey, mango, vanilla and calamansi) as well as the salted plum highball (gin and salty plum soda). The food menu was from All Pau - everything looked amazing and we heard rave reviews from attendees who ordered food. We ended up getting the butter mochi trio which was the perfect sweet bite to complement all our cocktails. The event was definitely crowded, but staff and bartenders were friendly and we had an amazing time! See you next year, AAPI cocktail week! read more

The place is cozy, great music, glimmer, nice staff, but the nice touch is the cocktail menu, i love the name of the cocktails and how they're, We tried Adhara, Dog Star and Zeta, my favorite "Dog Star", really balanced with a tropical flavor, i loved it! Trick Dog is a vibey establishment with a small offering of food and cocktails. FOOD [4.5/5] =========== + Kale Salad (6/5) - WOULD RECOMMEND! THE KALE SALAD HERE IS ACTUALLY THE BEST SALAD EVER. I think about it all the time. + "Burger" (4/5) The burger hot dog was pretty good. We came to Trick Dog for a drink before our reservation at Foreign Cinema. We sat by the bar and were lucky to spots as we were pretty early. It was the Circus menu and we got the Illusionist and Glass Walker. I loved the Glass Walker with gin, rice vinegar and wasabi. The hint of wasabi in particular was really interesting. The Illusionist was pretty sweet and reminded me of a tiki bar drink. It did have a nice smoky aftertaste with the mezcal but it was a bit too sweet and creamy for me with the sherry cream. Overall really interesting cocktails and a great food menu that we'll need to try next time! read more

stopped by before going to dinner around the area for some drinks and split a hot dog. There have really creative and fun themed drinks with some nonalcoholic options. we ordered at the bar and went upstairs to find a table. lots of seating upstairs when downstairs got crowded, and it was such a cosy vibe with the vines on the all and window into the restaurant next door. hotdog was bomb. read more
Heard it was the best bar in SF, and although the drinks were interesting, I didn't really like mine. For some reason it tasted a bit musty to me, like the funk of blue cheese. My friend thought it tasted fine though, saying that's what coconut milk was supposed to taste like. There's upstairs seating which gets closed off, but it wasn't roped off so people kept going up anyways. Music was loud, so a bit hard to chat. Maybe the food is good, but if it's the same quality as "Quik Dog" it's fine. read more

Stopped into Trick Dog in San Francisco and finally tried the Mexican Jumping Star and wow they did not disappoint. Trick Dog is one of those bars, that nails creativity without sacrifice and balance, and this cocktail is the perfect example. The vibe inside is dim lighting, cool design/art and the bartenders clearly know what they're doing. Service was quick even with the bar being crowded and everyone behind the bar was friendly and knowledgeable. If you're into inventive cocktails that are executed really go visit trick dog. read more
Was walking down this street on a Tuesday evening and decided to stop inside. It's a fun place and the staff was very nice. The food way surpassed our expectations. The kale was not at all bitter like kale can sometimes be. It was covered in pepitas and cheese as well as surprise bites of avocado so there was lot of good textures. The dress was delicious and there was a good portion. The hotdogs was probably one of the best hotdogs I've had in the city. The bun was lightly toasted, the sauce/peppers added a good amount of spicy without taking away from the flavors of the hotdog, and I always love opinions on a hot dog. Overall, this place was great! I gave it a 4/5 because the prices were pretty expensive but it was delicious. read more
this place is a must go to in mission! the drinks are so tasty - i got the globe of death. if you're into old fashions, this is a great option!! well balanced drink. price wise, pretty standard for SF cocktails, will run you around 20$ including tax and tip. staff os super friendly and check in on us frequently. we were seated upstairs where there's tables. waiter also provided plenty of suggestions for things to try and answered all of our table's questions. read more

This review is on the drinks only. I can't say enough about the artwork and presentation of their menu, which they change (I think they said) every 6 months to a year. You can see recent examples framed on the wall, but the current one is a set of circus act postcards. It's surely not the most efficient way to convey info, but it shows their creativity and gives attention to every cocktail. Cheers to the designer(s). The bar itself is immaculate and the high ceilings make it feel more spacious than it is. The bartenders show a lot of care in their craft. This is a great place to go to try something surprising. Lion Tamer: Delicious and on the sweet side with a hint of spice. The presentation with the fluffy mint in mine was nice. Sword Swallower: A take on a martini, this was refreshing on a warm day. It's served with a sliver of cucumber wrapped around the collins-sized ice block and a little sword. Glass Walker: Briny! I'm not into savory cocktails including classic martinis, but I respect the creativity here. I've never had a drink with rice vinegar, nori, and wasabi. read more

In my opinion, the food is equally as good as the drinks. The kale salad is especially memorable.
Can you bring your dog to Trick Dog?
Not sure what the official rule is, but I saw a woman holding her dog in the bar this evening. It was crowded. I wouldn't advise bringing a dog here unless you want to hold it the entire time.
