We stumbled upon Third Rail after watching a basketball game at Chase Center, and it ended up being such a gem! The atmosphere was great. It was busy on a Saturday night without feeling overwhelming and the whole place had a really fun relaxed energy to it. The staff was also fantastic and super helpful with all of our questions. We tried an Old Fashioned and the Third Rail cocktail, which was similar to a sour, and both were phenomenal. Seriously some amazing drinks. Such a fun spot - highly recommend! Came in on Saturday before a concert at Chase and it was busy but not so busy that you couldn't find a seat/have a conversation. Third Rail is an awesome bar! The cocktails are great, they have some interesting beers, and serve jerky. I have only tried the cocktails and have been very impressed in the quality, presentation, and service. They do a fun combo of a beer, shot, and jerky, which I haven't tried, but it always looks fun when I see it. My major gripe here is that every time I have been here, they keep the door open, and it is absolutely freezing inside. It is near the water, so you get a cold breeze running through the bar. I don't know if it is some legal reason, but that would make this bar even better if they just closed the door. read more

I've been here at some weird hours, and the staff has always been very pleasant. The drinks are good and strong, but the real champion here is the jerky. The vibe is relaxed but not quite as "casual neighborhood bar" as some other local bars are. Third Rail is a nice chill bar in the Dogpatch. My party of 4 came by Saturday night around 9:30 pm and it wasn't crowded at all. We were able to snag seats. Metered street parking also wasn't hard to find nearby, though it was paid until 10 pm. They have a special called the Rail Shot, which comes with a beer on tap + shot + jerky for only $12. We didn't get it, though I saw plenty of others ordering it. All cocktails run $14, and they have beer and wine as well. I tried two cocktails, the Electric Feel and the Butter be Good. The Electric Feel was my favorite of the two, as it was a sweeter drink. The Butter Be Good was quite strong and I had to slowly sip it. They have a great back bar with a variety selection of whiskey. They had a few fun infused drinks which I absolutely loved. They also have events throughout the week and partner with food so I'd recommend following them on Instagram for the full agenda. We didn't try any of the jerky but they had some fun pairings that you could do. Overall, a great place for drinks and to hang out with friends. They also have a hidden TV that they'll display now and then and a Wall of Jerky! I have tried the following so far: Cocktails: The Detour - This was one of my favorite cocktails. More spirit-forward, the marriage between coffee, mezcal, and orange truly make a beautiful pair (...or is it a threesome?). Escape to Jerez - This one might be my very favorite. A lovely and delicious blend of flavors. Refreshing and boozy! The Loveless - Tasty and boozy, but not memorable for me. Evil Twin - This was tasty, boozy, and spicy, but also not as memorable for me. Jerky: Sriracha - Spicy, savory, a little zesty, and tender -- one of my favorites! Red Eye - Unique! You can certainly taste the coffee. I like this with The Detour (but I think I like The Detour with anything). Rope A Dope - This was more of a Slim Jim-style. I liked this one! Simple, tasty. Sonoma - One of my favorites, because of the cut of the meat. Chunkier, satisfying bite. Spicy Grandma (?) - I think that was the name...She was definitely full of flavor! Very tasty. We needed a place we could come to prior to our dinner reservations, so we popped on Yelp to provide the recommendation. I am NEVER disappointed by Yelp and this place has turned to my hidden gem of 2021. When you approach the place, you'll notice the parklets offering a few outdoor dining tables. Inside, the place is low lit, dark wooden panels, large clocks on the wall, and then there's the bar area. The bar is lit up and definitely the attention focus. It's filled with tons of bottles of spirits and also a "Wall of Jerky." What is this place?! A quick search online reveals that this place is known for their cocktails and oddly enough, their jerky. When we approached the bar, the mixologists were hard at work, creating orders, but super personable! I can't for the life of me, remember their names but there were two gentlemen running the bar and truly the highlight of experience. They were nice, funny and super patient with us as searched for our drinks. As for our drinks and food, here's what we got: Each jerky ounce is about $4.50. We got three to try: the rope a dope, Sonoma and Mighty. They are served on a wooden platter with butcher paper lined on the bottom and a cute stamp on the paper with the type of jerky you ordered - nice touch! - Mighty Meat - black pepper, paprika, coriander - Sonoma - smoked beef, ginger, brown sugar, onion, soy sauce (from Sonoma County Meat Co.) - Rope a Dope - rope style jerky with brown sugar and garlic My favorites were the sonoma and rope a dope. They were complex, easy to chew and had a hint of sweetness that made the flavor dynamic. Great taste! We loved it so much, we went home with a few ounces of each. FWIW, the bartenders mentioned that the Sonoma, Sriracha, and rope dope are made from Sonoma Jerky Company; the rest are made from the owner of this bar. We also got the Evil Twin cocktail for $13. It's made with Mezcal tequila, aperol, grapefruit, lemon, habanero and topped with a lemon rind slice. OH EM GEE - this cocktail was fantastic. Loved that the mezcal was prominent and yet delicate. The grapefruit and lemon citrus helped to tone the tequila flavor down. It's served in a coupe cocktail glass and so so good! I enjoyed every minute of my THREE servings of this. Listen, don't sleep on Dogpatch. It's up and coming and has some really great businesses like Third Rail. This place is a gem and I can't wait to return.
