We came to Shoji in the daytime for a quick drink. And by drink, I mean matcha. I got the matcha einspanner and it was the best I've ever had. We ordered from the register and went into the next room and it was such a vibe. It was like drinking at a bar in the daytime and the ambiance was perfect. The einspanner has a delicious cream top and it really added you the taste of the matcha. I'll be dreaming of it until the next time I have it!
Cool place for drinks! I wish I had dressed better since the decor is so classy. It was a little warmer than anticipated inside but it may have been just that day. Service was really friendly and explained everything they brought out. I would probably only do drinks here next time, or food with a smaller group. The burger is definitely worth trying!
A friend of mine told me about this place so she reserved a table for us. The place has a cool vibe with the music playing in the background and the inside is nice. They have seating inside and in the patio area which is heated. We arrived on time but had to wait a little bit before getting a table. We sat in the patio area and they had to turn off the heat because it was too hot. Better to be too hot than cold. We ordered a couple drinks to start and they brought us waters as well. For our appetizers and entrees which we shared were french fries, UNI AMAEBI DONBURI, PORK JOWL, and the SHOJI BURGER. The fries came out first and were cooked perfect crunchy, and the sauces that came with it was a nice addition. The Uni Amaebi Donburi came second and it was really good, light, fresh, and overall delicious. Too bad it was a small dish with a big price. The Burger came out afterwards and it was delicious. The burger was cooked perfect, and the cheese flavor was very tasty. It was a great burger. We didn't order desserts so that will have to be next time. The service was really good because they were really busy. I would recommend reservations. The price is a little high so be prepared. i'd still come back to try other dishes because the food and service was excellent.
Great ambiance with two distinct spaces - dark and plush vs outdoor covered patio with a lot of light. Most of the food is in petite portions to be an accompaniment to drinks, great easy stop to enjoy conversation. The food is good and well presented. The tebasaki is good though a bit sweeter than what I've had in Japan. The mini seafood bowl has a very high seafood to rice ratio! Service is friendly. I'll come back for some cocktails next time.
I really wanted to like Bar Shoji, but it just really missed the mark for me. Yelp needs to update pricing to at least $$$. The chirashi don was $53 and did taste great, albeit sushi rice with amaebi, ikura, and uni is hard to make badly. But, the bowl was literally 6 inches across and came with maybe 6 sheets of commercial seasoned nori. Not worth the splurge! The fries and burger shared the melted cheese sauce, which was basically a fancy velveeta. The burger did have a nice blush in spite of being served in a pool of bubbling cheese saucy. It was all just fine but egregious at $15 and $28 dollars. It does look nice for the gram, but is a bit overwhelming in terms of cheese. The best bite for me was the tebasaki, which were crispy and had a sweet yuzu kosho glaze. I could eat many of these, but the $19 plate had 4 wings (flats with tip attached). This was an overpriced, average meal at best. I am personally don't drinking alcohol, so I did enjoy the jasmine fermented tea I had. We left hungry and out $262 for 4 drinks and small bites shared among a group of 4. I would skip food and just get drinks if I came again.
Loved the drinks and food, looking forward to going back! We ordered the fries, the famous burger, and the matcha affogato. The match affogato was by far the best item. The matcha is rich and high quality, paired with a strawberry ice cream, the perfect bitterness to offset the sweetness from the rest of the dessert. Between my friend and I, we probably tried almost all of the crafted cocktails. Finally, a place that puts some actual liquor into the drinks, not just some diluted juice for $20! All of them were valid. The servers were also incredibly friendly and attentive! Looking forward to coming back in the day time to try their cafe menu and at night for the uni amaebi donburi
This review is for BAR Shoji (not the Cafe) Wow! Talk about ambience. You need to be 21+ to enter and they do check ID. It's dark and sexy inside. Table setting was gorgeous. Decor is minimal. Menus are scanned using the QR code at the table. Service is excellent! We were approached/reminded that our reservation was for 1.5 hours but the party after us wasn't arriving until later so we can extend our stay for another half hour. That was very nice of them to let us know. We started with cocktails. Beautiful glassware. They may look delicate but these drinks are strong! Very delicious though. We ordered: KABOSU - like an elevated spicy clarified margarita with Thai flavors. Not too spicy. It just adds a kick. This cocktail paired well with what we ordered for dinner. KOHAKU - like a matcha whiskey cocktail SHOJI MARTINI - dry and made with Japanese gin For dinner, we ordered: FRENCH FRIES with Akazu aged vinegar aioli, tobiko - the fries were dusted with Thai seasoning which were flavorful eaten as is but when dipped in the aioli, whoa!!! The tobiko added the right amount of balance to the tang of the aioli. Next level!! OYSTER - the dressing was good. A little on the sweet side. PORK JOWL - tender and so flavorful. I wish it came with rice. The pear and pineapple kimchi was the perfect side. CEVICHE - fish was fresh and the flavors were well-balanced. Loved the giant pieces of nori rice crackers. SHOJI BURGER - this was a nice show at the table. The fondue cheese was yummy. The burger was well-seasoned. Good for sharing. For dessert, we had: HOJICHA AFFOGATO - Beautiful, delicate and delicious dessert that was fun to watch prepared at our table. Lovely experience. Thank you for the great service. The staff was kind and professional. Well done.
Be sure to make a reservation! On a random Wednesday evening this place was VERY busy. Luckily I was able to make a reservation on Open Table for later in the day. We started dinner with oysters. They were fresh, clean and the beet chili jam sauce was very vibrant. It was a great combination of flavors. It's topped with fried shallots which adds a nice crunch to end off the bite. For dinner I had the uni amaebi donburi. It comes with ikura, sweet raw shrimp and uni. There was also a layer of what seemed to be finely processed mushrooms under the ikura which added a nice texture. The egg yolk added a richness and creaminess throughout the dish. It is a very rich dish so I didn't mind that it was what others described as a smaller portion. I'd definitely stop in again for dinner with friends.
Omg genuinely such a beautiful and amazing cafe! I had to try the matcha einspanner because it was so popular on tiktok! And wow was it delicious. The vanilla foam with kinako powder was SOOO good. The barista recommended us to eat the cream separately from drinking the matcha and omg that was life changing!! I've never tasted cream top this good, it did not have any milk/cheese taste! It also wasn't too sweet. The matcha itself was pretty strong, but not the best matcha quality I've had personally. Don't get me wrong, it was still really good! The hot hojicha latte was also good and strong, but nothing too special unlike the matcha einspanner. Matcha einspanner definitely the star of the show :) Space was beautiful and so aesthetic, it was bar vibes! At night they do serve cocktails :) Service was also amazing, workers were so kind! I NEEED to come back to try the dinner menu!!!!
This shop is served as a cafe in the morning and bar at night. I came here in the evening to check it out, and highly recommend to make reservation in advance. Their drink menu is full of unique creations, and their non-alcoholic cocktails were especially impressive. We ordered two: Cold Noodle and Dashi Apple. Both were delicious and totally my style - light, refreshing, and full of layered flavors. I honestly didn't have high expectations for the food, but it ended up being a pleasant surprise, especially the chicken wings. They were incredibly juicy, perfectly seasoned, and so good that I seriously considered ordering another plate. The oysters also stood out, served with a unique sauce that was bright, refreshing, and had just a subtle kick of spice to whet the appetite. We also tried their signature burger. The beef patty was cooked perfectly, staying juicy without being dry. To finish, we ordered the Matcha Affogato. The matcha is slowly poured over the ice cream tableside, making for a fun little presentation and the perfect ending to the meal. The interior design is modern, thoughtfully designed, and aesthetically beautiful. There's also a spacious, bright outdoor patio.
Such a cool Japanese bar with a great atmosphere! Make sure you bring your ID, because they will card you at the entrance as if you're going into a club. The inside has a really cool, stylish vibe, with a great selection of drinks and very good bartenders. The food was amazing too, especially the sando -- honestly, it might be the best sando I've ever had in San Francisco! Excellent service all around and a fun, comfortable place to meet up with friends for drinks and some seriously good Japanese food. Definitely a spot I'd come back to!
Shoji is a true experience that takes you back to Japan. Their cocktails are so good. The chicken sandwich was to die for. The ceviche was bright and zesty. The donburi with Ikura and Uni was creamy and melted in my mouth at each bite. The wings were great too. The hojicha affogato desert was spectacular. I would go back! Amazing vibes and great service.
Came here on a Wednesday morning (about 10:30) and there was no wait and ample seating. I was able to get my matcha quickly and linger in the bar area. The matcha had great flavor, not too milky. The vibe is moody and dramatic, making it among the chicest places at which I've sipped on a matcha latte. I was able to drink leisurely while reading (on my phone -- the lighting is dim, so this isn't the place for working or reading actual paper). Inside is quiet, but not so quiet that you can't have a normal conversation. Staff is very friendly.

We were visiting SFMOMA and discovered this cafe nearby - just a few minutes walk since it was just on the other side of the block. I was craving for matcha, and SHOJI did not disappoint!! The Matcha Einspanner is incredible!! It is rich, creamy, and satisfying! Upon entry, you place your order at the counter, and if you want to enjoy your drink in the cafe, you can find a table beyond the curtain. The interior is calming and romantic. A nice spot for a coffee/matcha date! I would definitely frequent this cafe if I worked in the area. Will for sure keep this place in mind if I'm in town for dinner, because the burger and fries on the menu look like they're out of this world! read more

Really enjoyed our visit to Bar Shoji. The ambiance is intimate and moody, with dim lighting that makes it a great spot for a date night. We weren't very hungry, so we shared the wings and ceviche. The wings were crispy, with that perfect sweet-and-savory balance. The ceviche was bright and tangy, and the crunchy seaweed added the perfect texture. And of course, we had to finish with the horchata dessert, which was delicious. Drinks were tasty as well. Service started a little slow but picked up as the night went on. Overall, a lovely spot for drinks, bites, and a cozy evening. read more

Stopped by on a Friday at 1pm, pleasantly surprised to see there was no line at all! Their menu is pretty small so I was set on the matcha einspanner. It comes already sweetened and no adjustments can be made, only added. I thought it was pretty decent, I do enjoy the soybean and matcha powder they sprinkle on the top. Definitely on the less sweet side so I appreciated that. As for the matcha flavor, it tasted pretty standard to me. Definitely nice how they have an indoor and outdoor area. The outdoor area gets pretty hot since it's similar to a greenhouse but nice for photos. We ended up coming back inside since it was too hot outside. The inside spots definitely fill up fast due to the AC and nice ambience but we were lucky someone had just left. Super nice spot to just chill or have a date! read more

I actually came here twice while on a trip to SF. The Cafe turns into a bar at night. So the first night I had the Kohaku, which was a whiskey drink. I pretty much try any creamy drink that has a whipped egg white. This was an amazing drink, bright citrus, smokey whiskey, and a creamyness from the egg. Next the Miran Miyagi oysters were very fresh, I forgot what was in it, but there was some crunchy bits for texture and there was also a good kick of spice. The Hojicha Affogato was their dessert, and it was also great. It had dark chocolate gelato and a raspberry compote. I came back to try the Matcha Einspanner since I heard good things about it. I never had one before, but if they're all like this, then I love einspanners. It had a super thick whipped cream with a nice high quality matcha. The service was also very friendly. And since this is a bar/ cafe, it's super chill vibes. read more
Absolutely stunning speakeasy style bar attached to the cafe. Get your coffee and head on over for some cozy and intimate settings. The decor is dark, moody and heavy Asian inspired. Do your meeting or work from this location. The back has a restaurant or private party setting. The coffee is good but the milk need to be swap out. Not the optimal combo. I stopped by on Saturday afternoon and got the matcha einspanner and sat down in one of the booths inside. The service was prompt and my drink came out in around 5 minutes. The matcha itself was pretty strong and pronounced in flavor, which I enjoyed. The cream top was quite thick on top and didn't have any added sweetness so it was more of a textural element more than anything else. It also had some kinako powder on top which I thought was a nice touch! This was my first time getting to sit inside the restaurant and it had a nice broody/speakeasy vibe to it. There was also an outdoor patio that you could enjoy as well. I know that Shoji turns into a restaurant at night so I can definitely see how this would be a great spot for a date night. However, during the day, the space was even being used by customers as a meeting space/study space. I would be back again if I were in the area, but like most SF spots, parking was an absolute nightmare! read more
Came here for girls night on a Friday night. There was a bit of a wait to get our seats. We wanted to be seated inside, but there is an outdoor area that also looked really cute, and vibey. The food on the menu is small, tapa style and you order multiple dishes to share. We got the tebasaki, pork jowl, and ceviche to share. I really enjoyed the tebasaki and ceviche. The seaweed or nori rice cracker with the ceviche paired really well. The tebasaki was so flavorful. The kimchi that came with the pork jowl was pineapple and pear based. I was expecting actual kimchi and was surprised that it was sweet. The service was good and the place has great vibes. The cold noodle non alcoholic drink was very savory, tasted heavily of seaweed. It was an interesting drink that I've never tasted before. My friend got the matcha fizz with a shot of alcohol, which tasted amazing. I will be getting that next time. The expresso martini tasted a bit watered down. It turns into a cafe during the day time and they are known for their matcha drinks. read more
Must-visit place! I absolutely love the vibes here, it's such a cozy and comfortable space to work during the day. I visited on a weekday during their cafe hours and it was perfect. You must try the Matcha Einspanner if you're a matcha lover. I honestly want another one right now as I'm writing this review. I can't wait to come back again to try more of their café drinks. Everything is so good and perfectly balanced, and the sweet cream is absolutely amazing. The kinako powder on top is the perfect combination. The bathroom is also super clean and spacious, which is always a plus. I've also booked dinner over the weekend and I'm really excited to try their dinner menu soon! read more
Overall a nice aesthetic café. I like that there is outdoor seating in the back with shade. It's very vibey. My matcha was good but the portion is kinda small for the price. The ice spinner on top was not too sweet, which I appreciated. I would probably go back to try their dinner menu not sure about coming back for Matcha or coffee. read more

Honestly quite impressed with the food! I wish they served their matcha drinks in the evening since I wasn't able to try them, but being able to try the food was also worth it. My friend and I didn't have a reservation since we thought a Thursday early dinner wouldn't be busy! We arrived just in time - there was a little wait when we arrived around 5pm, but there was a cancellation so we were able to get seated at the bar instead of the outdoor patio :) Everything we ordered was amazingggggg! I was quite impressed since it seemed more of a cocktail bar bite vibes. It is a bit pricy though, but I can't say my money spent was not worth it. I definitely want to come back and try their matcha drinks though. The only downside is the location since there's not much parking during the day. read more
Unfortunately this place is just another one of SF's high end bars with low lighting and expensive food that is not worth the price. We came here knowing it would be more expensive, but I don't think the food lived up to the hype I was expecting. The portions were pretty small, so Shoji is more like a tapas & drinks bar rather than a dinner spot - just FYI. The ceviche was fine but had a little spicy kick to it, the donburi was not special (this could be served at any of the other Japanese spots in the city for half the price), & the burger was tasty but very small. The fries were good & I did enjoy the toppings. The chicken wings were also delicious but were probably some of the skinniest wings from the saddest chickens. read more

Made reservations for a Saturday. We arrived a little early but there were no tables available at the time of our arrival; however, she was able to seat us about 15 minutes before our reservation time. Reservations are highly recommended as we observed many walk-ins but there was a 1+ hour wait. Also, must be 21+. It's not an extensive menu - more like small bites. Appreciate the selection of Zero proof drinks. Hubs happy with the NA Suntory. I went with the Dashi Apple which was quite refreshing. Kiddo ordered the Miyabi which was quite floral. We ordered food items to share. Started with the Tebasaki (chicken wings). Kiddo liked these so much she ordered another one. Next, the pork jowl - some pieces were just fat but the meat was seasoned well. Loved the pear and pineapple kimchi - would've liked a bowl of that. The Tori Nanban Sando was another good one. The Shoji Burger is what hubs came for. Fork and knife definitely need to eat this. Pillowy soft bread, melty cheese, and the pickles all made for a tasty burger. Hubs would return for this alone. Ended our meal with the Hojicha Affogato - so good and such an enjoyable way to end our meal. We weren't rushed at any time. Service was good in that they checked on us often. I made a reservation online and I actually wanted to sit inside but they made us sit outside which wasn't the worst thing. I was worried about the temperature but the thing that was not convenient about us was you're extremely close to the next table that we could hear them loudly even if they were just talking in a normal tone + volume. We were just extremely close and it was our first date. It was extra awkward because of us hearing the conversations surrounding us as we were sandwiched in the middle of 2 tables. The food was pretty good. The donburi was very fresh. The ceviche was also so good. The aged sashimi was just okay. It was not great so even if I'd like to go back to check out the other dishes, I will not order that again. I personally think the dishes were a little expensive and the sea urchin substitution was worth trying but if I'd order the donburi again, no need to upgrade. Hopefully, I could go back to try it again as we couldn't properly enjoy the food because of where we were seated. Maybe we need to try the other dishes and be lucky enough to sit inside. We ate here in the patio and it was great. The waitress was nice and gave us solid recommendations. The presentation of the burger might have overshadowed the flavor, but the cheesiness and richness of the sauce was outstanding l. I liked the Donburi, but for the price, you might be better ordering anything else of their amazing food, like the Chicken Wings. read more

If you've been to Angel Share in NYC, Shoji carries a strong resemblance. It's a classy joint but the bass from the music echoes throughout the place. It gets busy fast and there was a bit of a queue even though we had a reservation. The pricing feels steep; in some ways, I was transported back to Manhattan and Manhattan city prices! I ordered the Noguchi which has A5 wagyu washed Japanese whiskey. It's a smoky drink and is obviously spirit forward but reminded me of a toned down Manhattan. It's a cool spot but don't think I'm in a rush to go back. read more
Finally checked this place off my bucket list! Just a tip: they only serve drinks in the morning, and food service starts at 4 PM. Of course I had to get the famous Matcha Einspänner, and let's just say it absolutely lives up to the hype. The matcha tastes authentic and rich, while the einspänner cream is barely sweet, which I really appreciated. The kinako powder on top was such a nice touch and tied everything together perfectly. The atmosphere is also really lovely. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and the whole space feels calm and inviting. Tip: Parking isn't easy around this area. There's a nearby garage at 101 Second Street that was only $3 for the first hour. read more

~4.5/5, best not-too-sweet matcha in sf fidi area this is a review just for the matcha/morning cafe to-go; hope to update review for the food since it's been a while.. I've been here several times since their first opening and through their numerous cup changes. I can say the matcha is consistently good, and glad the cup size is bigger :) Matcha einspanner is great, the latte is not sweet and you can taste the matcha quality, milk proportions are just right. Einspanner cream is delicious too and a sweet treat paired with the latte, and topped with matcha powder. read more
Their drinks and food are decent, although very expensive and small portions. Medium to low light gives a great vibe for a date or a more intimate hangout spot. What they really need to work on is the customer churn. You are only given 90 minutes to order, consume and leave, which doesn't quite match what you'd be looking for if you're going for a happy hour or trying to grab some drinks and bites and catch up with your friends. It honestly felt rushed service and more like they want to just get rid of you so the next person in line can come in. And for the price point they're charging you, yeah it's not worth it. You can do so much better in the city. But if you're looking to burn money, or show off to someone that doesn't understand anything about culinary or dinning and just wants to be part of the hype, hits the spot! read more
This review is for the dinner, not the cafe. Really enjoyed the food, decor, vibes, and service!! Unexpected but they had a solid house music playlist going on too LOL. Our friends got drinks including the Noguchii which had A5 Wagyu Washed Japanese Whiskey and Hinoki Wood Smoke -- when they unveiled the drink, the smoke flavor was so strong we could smell it from across the table and it was so good. Fav dish was the Shoji Burger followed by the Tebasaki. Our party of 4 were seated in a booth at the end of the room where it had dark/moody lighting. We liked that the menu was small so we could order most of it. Our server was like "you guys have the longest food ticket" and they had to keep clearing dishes and making room on the table for us LOL. The water glasses were tiny and even though the servers were great about refilling them often, I had to refill myself a bunch because each sip was half the glass hahah. Recommend getting a reservation for dinner otherwise you can try to walk-in right at opening. What we got: - Ceviche: solid, mild spicy - Uni Amaebi Donburi: high quality but expensive for what you get - Tebasaki: fried chicken wings SO GOOD, loved the seasoning - Pork jowl: solid even when we're not as into fatty meat - French fries: too cheesy/saucy lol - Tori Nanban Sando: good quality chicken, tasty - Shoji Burger: our fav! Delicious!!!! Best matcha in soma. And being at a conference this week, I've tried all the walkable matchas in the area. The baristas are super sweet. Bella made our iced and hot matchas and they're beautiful as well as delicious. Great ratio. The ambiance is cozy, comfortable, and relaxing.
