I took my two friends here for a birthday celebration, and it was so magnificent.  It looks very unassuming from the host stand, but you are transported into a beautiful dining area as you are ushered in. Lush velvet booths, a beautiful mural behind a magnificent bar top, and even perfect table ware!! I love when restaurants pay attention to details. Everything I ordered was delicious. The oysters, uni amaebi donburi (Sea Urchin & Raw Shrimp Rice Bowl), Tom Kha Ceviche, and the chicken egg salad sandwich. The bites were truly so decadent, balanced, and well-executed. The oysters were fresh, plump, and perfectly topped with sweet and citrusy flavors. The bite of the night was the uni amaebi bowl. They load you up on sea urchin, shrimp, and roe. It is bursting with flavor, and paired with PERFECTLY COOKED RICE.  The drinks were also amazing! I got the matcha cocktail and the espresso martini. I mean... phenomenal. Everyone wants to do a matcha cocktail, but I don't think a single bar program is going to put one out as perfect as Shoji's. It's delicate and earthy, and the perfect drink to pair with their menu.  Dessert was also good! Tea-based affogatos. They're fun. Ugh, I want to live in SF just so I can frequent Shoji. The uni amaebi donburi was delicious - light, refreshing, the sea urchin was just the right bit of briney and buttery but not too overpowering, and the ikura (salmon roe/red caviar) exploded and gushed in your mouth so satisfyingly. Came with plenty of sheets of nori, so you may not need to order the nori on the side. The only thing I didn't love was the raw shrimp, but that's a texture preference. Even the rice was good and offset all the flavors perfectly. The kohaku cocktail (one of the two most popular, the other being the gin miyabi/french 75) was matcha forward and didn't taste too strongly of whiskey. The space is intimate with upbeat music that is not too loud. There is also a projector showing scenes of city life in Japan on the wall, which adds a really nice touch. They were quite busy, but our server checked in often and was apologetic about the wait. Food-- *Kombu celery: I did not know celery could be prepared to taste this flavorful. I've been to the cafe in the morning a few times. Each time I would get the matcha einspanner. It's so good. I've also tried their houjicha and I feel like it needs some sweetness to it. They did let us know that it wasn't sweet before we ordered it and asked if we wanted it sweeter. Their affogato is also good. For their bar/dinner, we've tried the oysters and I like how they make the sauce for it. We got the uni amaebi donburi which was good but my favorite dish is the tori nanban sando. I love how it tastes and still think about it all the time. Really enjoyed the egg salad in it and the chicken. We have to come back to try their popular shoji burger and other dishes. About a 15 minute wait when I arrived at like 1pm on Thursday, and about 5-10 minute wait for the drinks! The einspanner is so pretty when you dine in, and you get to use a little wooden spoon to scoop some of the crème on top :) There's some indoor seating in the back, but if it's a sunny day, there's also some outdoor seating in the patio just past the kitchen! We went on a Thursday night on the way home from a SF Pride fundraiser after making a reservation for 9:15pm at 9pm. The maître d' was probably the best part of our time there. I could initially only reserve outdoor seating, but when I got there, I saw how special it was to sit at the bar. The maître d' kept an eye out for us and moved us to the bar once two seats opened up. The prices are pretty steep so I wouldn't recommend sitting in the outdoor part of the restaurant since it's not as outstanding. The ambience inside the restaurant is much better. We ordered the Kohaku and the Noguchi. Both drinks were interesting. The Noguchi in particular had a performance aspect to it with smoke coming out of the drink. It reminded us of a bar in New York City called Angels Share. We ordered the katsu sando as recommended on Yelp and then almost regretted not ordering the cheeseburger fondue when we saw it arrive next to us. However, the sando was incredible. Soft fluffy bread, crisp batter on the chicken, with delicious egg salad wedged in between. Without having tasted the cheeseburger, I would recommend getting the sando over the cheeseburger simply because the cheeseburger might just be a gimmick with the fondue. Still next time we come, we will get the cheeseburger. So here are my recommendations if you are going to Shoji, 1) make a reservation inside the restaurant (not outside), 2) plan to go for the experience, for a drink or a snack since it's not cheap. read more

Stopped by here on a Friday to grab dinner with a friend, we had reservations at 7 pm and as soon as we got in, we we're asked for our names and showed our IDs, and promptly got seated in the outside heated patio. The inside had a nice speakeasy type vibe once you walk in while the back patio had more of your typical dining experience with tables a bit closer, a nice mixture of both atmospheres. We started with drinks, I had the Ichigo Ichie, and she had the Kohaku, I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed the Kohaku more then the Ichigo, something about that Matcha hit the spot where I could not taste the Whiskey, the Ichigo itself was good, but the Kohaku stole it for me, so of course I had to order one after I finished my Ichigo! We then grabbed a half dozen Miyagi oysters and a Ceviche to start. The Oysters were delicious by themselves, but when the Ceviche came out, I had the wild idea of combining a bit of the Ceviche sauce into the oyster to get a herbal then citrusish flavor after, and damn did it work! The Aged Sashimi came out afterward along with the Uni Amaebi Donburi where we also substituted for Hokkaidio urchin, the Sashimi was delicious with the various cuts, along with the nori paste next to the wasabi. What stole the show I'd say was the Donburi. When we mixed it together and tried a few bites, the flavors exploded. It was so good I forgot that it was raw shrimp and had thought it was hamachi. We also ordered a Tori Nanban Sando as I've always wanted to try Japanese-style sandwiches, and wow, was it delicious as well! We were in a rush because there was IMMENSE traffic with it being the Superbowl weekend in SF and the Chapelle show - to give you context, we were an hour late. Shoji (SF) nails the ambiance and service! the room is stylish, energetic, and feels like a great place for a night out. Unfortunately, the food itself was pretty hit or miss. A lot of the dishes leaned very aggressive in flavor. Strong fish sauce notes and heavy spice levels tended to overpower everything else, which took away from what I usually love about Japanese food: balance, restraint, and letting the ingredients speak for themselves. Instead of clean, nuanced flavors, many bites felt loud and one-note. The burger was enjoyable mainly because it was loaded with cheese (which... kind of feels like cheating ). It's tasty, but at $28 for a single-patty burger, it didn't feel worth the price, especially compared to other options in the city. I think where Shoji truly shines is in the drinks and dessert. The cocktails were phenomenal, and the standout of the night was the hojicha affogato, served tableside. Rich, phenomenal chocolate ice cream with freshly whisked hojicha poured over the top! warm, aromatic, and perfectly balanced. Easily my favorite bite of the night and a must-order. What a stunning restaurant! I've heard so much about this place but never made it out to try the cafe during the day, but was super excited to try the bar at night. It's 21+ at night and the ambiance felt super trendy and intimate. The service was super friendly and although our drinks took quite a long time to arrive (only after all of our food arrived), the pacing of the courses was great and we didn't feel rushed at all. I enjoyed the miso soup (came piping hot and lots of green onions) as a starter. The ceviche was surprisingly spicy and it was such a refreshing bite with the fruit and chip, although I didn't love how the chip left dust all over my fingers (just a gripe of mine). Flavor-wise delicious though. The burger was fantastic -- came in a cast iron with melted cheese poured in, which bubbled for a while. The meat was charred nicely, super tender, and the caramelized onions were a great touch. I scooped up all the extra cheese after!! Highly recommend. Also loved the hojicha affogato dessert (tbh the main reason I wanted to come here) -- super chocolatey but not too sweet at all. Would have loved to try the matcha version as well. They pour the hand whisked hojicha in at the table which was such a nice touch. I got the kohaku drink, which was a whiskey based matcha drink. The matcha flavor wasn't super strong and the drink itself was pleasantly fruity & not too alcoholic. Presentation of both drinks was beautiful as well. Behind the curtain is a beautiful bar and seating area to drink you matcha there. I would go with my coworkers (who are more versed in espresso than me) and they would chat with the staff about the seasonal beans and flavors. Solo walk-in on a Wednesday around 4:45 PM. Got seated without a wait. Ordered the Noguchi, a bold, smoky cocktail that delivered exactly what it promised. The smoke was a bit much at times, but if that's your thing, this is your drink. It was definitely mine. Smokey, spirit forward, and heavy. The real star here? The space. The artwork alone is worth the visit, easily some of the most memorable I've seen in a bar setting. Everything feels intentional and curated, like someone actually cared about every corner of this room. That said, Shoji leans more modern design-forward lounge than anything traditionally Japanese. Music ran medium to loud, ranging from Thundercat to Marita Takeuchi, so don't come expecting quiet or intimate. Ambience: Visually stunning, stylish, and cool... but more "look at me" than "settle in." I didn't find out til I paid the bill that there's an outside section. Maybe next time. Service was fine, but I never caught my initial server's name and the hospitality didn't quite match the room. A space this thoughtful deserves service that goes a little above and beyond. I previously dined at Mourad & Shoji changed the space so much that I didn't recognize the layout. There's a narrow dining room with bar area on the right & larger dining area is outside in the back. I had high hopes for Shoji as we were fans of Shota, one of their other restaurants. We sat at the bar, which is usually my preference unless I'm on a date with someone super special & want more privacy. The dining room is kinda dark (the type of lighting that makes everyone look good) but there are small lamps for accent lighting. We started out with drinks, which were great. The food menu didn't have many items & we shared the crudités (not anything special), marinated amaebi & uni donburi (my favorite item as it was delicious), ceviche (my friend said that this was his favorite dish of the evening) & the cheese burger (this was my second favorite savory item & should be eaten with silverware because it's messy from the delicious cheese sauce). Despite what's pictured below, I actually would not recommend the einspanner- both my friend and I agreed the consistency was kind of odd (like only cream) and made it hard to mix and enjoy the drink since I was just getting bitter goopfuls of matcha against goopfuls of cream. Instead, get the hot matcha latte if you want something strong and smooth. I usually ask for less sweet and it's not sweet at all (perfect for me) -- just make sure you like the taste of grass :) It comes in a small dainty cup but is on the stronger side. Here's a very overdue review on my experience here from Summer 2025! I highly recommend making a reservation for their BAR SEATING on OpenTable. Truly one of the BEST AMBIANCES of a cafe I have ever seen. Imagine a storefront counter that looks like a standard matcha and coffee shop. However, if you go behind the curtain? A beautiful high ceiling bar with luxury speakeasy vibes. Velvet couches and a large countertop that serves cocktail-like matcha and lattes. The Matcha Einspanner is definitely all the craze here! The presentation and intricate creation process is interesting! The attention-to-detail is commendable even. The vienna cream is the highlight for me. Decadent and rich with sweetness. However the matcha itself was just okay! It was decent and made from concentrate. Not too sweet and a little earthy. I would like to try their other drinks next time. I have yet to return and try their food, but this was overall a wonderful experience that was really memorable! Great for a date night or a catch up with a couple friends. Definitely a small intimate space, so maybe a table of 4 max would be ideal. read more

Good vibes and ambiance, pretty popular on a weekend night so i would make reservations. Uni donburi: 4.5/5 Really solid, only issue is that it's kind of tiny. We got one per person and it still felt a bit tiny for the price. I really liked the cured egg since it added a nice saltiness/umami, the uni and the shrimp both tasted really fresh and clean. Oysters: 4.5/5 Oysters were a bit small but the red sauce they pair with is really good Ceviche: 3.5/5 Ceviche itself was fresh but a bit spicier than i would have preferred. The seaweed crisps were cool but was a bit hard to eat since they disintegrated with each bite. Matcha Fizz: 3/5 Super citrusy, nothing special in my opinion Matcha affogato: 4/5 Good balance of tartness from the strawberry, subtle sweetness of the matcha, and sweet ness from the ice cream. Good textural balance with the nuts at the bottom. read more

Stellar service! We were seated quickly despite the crowd. The food and cocktails also came out pretty quickly. We adored our server. She was attentive and answered our questions about the menu. My boyfriend and I were also impressed by the presentation of the dining area. The silverware and plates were high quality and from a brand we like I 100% recommend the Shoji fries and chicken wings. The burger seems to be the claim to fame but I promise it's good as people make it out to be. The cocktails are on the strong side but at least I'm getting what I paid for. The Kabosu was my favorite. Will definitely be coming back! read more

Truly a hidden gem (although it is quite popular lol) i love their matcha and the soybean powder they put with it. Such delicious flavors, and the matcha strong asf too! I feel the caffeine kicking my heart after just two cups lols The service was great, the bartender even let my friend charged his phone at the front which is super nice of them! Ambiance is feels highclass at the bar, the front is reserved for business transactions with people coming in out for their orders, it can get pretty crowded though! read more

Although my first experience here was OK, second time was much better ! Made a reservation with a few gals and got seated quickly. The inside is moody and honestly the music is bumping- really great atmosphere! We got to order a few different types of foods and drinks - all delicious. The uni was good but pricy. The best food was the Katsu sandwich, would order again! The egg salad inside the Katsu was fire, and the milk bread was so soft! Now the drinks. All pretty good! Complex and Asian inspired, however so many of them had a bubble / soda complex and I'm more of a flat cocktail gal. Overall still good. Would come back with a reservation mainly for the sandwiches and vibes read more

i wanted to love this spot sooo bad because i love matcha and fancy cocktails, but alas, shoji left much to be desired. service was a little curt for my liking when we first entered. i understand there was a decent amount of people waiting, but the hostess felt like she was sick of being there (which fair, but not ideal ykwim). ambiance of course was stunning even though we were on the outside patio, the vibes were still great. as for the food and drinks, let's just say they looked better than they tasted. i got the kohaku which is the matcha whiskey drink, and i personally couldn't taste the matcha at all. the whiskey was extremely overpowering and the drink just felt like drinking sweet whiskey with a whisper of green tea -- a far cry from how green and pretty it was. my friend got the miyabi which was a fizzy lychee gin-based drink, which she said was good, but nothing out of this world. i also tried the myoga, which was an herby vegetal moscow mule, and while that was a lot better than the kohaku, it was nowhere near the top of my list of savory cocktails i've tried. the food was decent but nothing to write home about. i liked the ceviche and its tom kha sauce, but the seaweed chips it was served with were messy and got dust all over our hands. overall, with how many great bars there are in sf, shoji is a skip for me. read more
