Love this place!! The matcha was really good, does not come super sweet but there is a side area where you can add your own simple syrup. The workers were very nice and brought the food to you, and the overall interior was really cute, but packed. The ginger matcha was very unique, and tasted like Taho (Asian tofu dessert with ginger syrup), and was super creamy and yummy. The sandos were AMAZING! We shared the chicken katsu sando and the tamago sando, both came with 3 pieces and were very well worth the price. The chicken one was so saucy and crunchy and the egg one was also good.
Came here on a Saturday afternoon to grab a quick lunch! I ordered with the cashier up front who was very helpful in explaining to me the options available here. After I ordered, I took a seat in the waiting area by the Togo window to wait for my order. There was plenty of tables for dining in, but they were filled so I grabbed my order to eat outside. There was a little area in the front of the store for you to eat at. Stonemill matcha has been on my radar for a long time now and I'm happy to say I was not disappointed. I ordered the matchazuke 4.5/5 and the matcha latte 4/5 and they were both delicious. The matchazuke was perfectly savory, each bite packed full of umami. The piece of salmon was seasoned nicely, not too salty and paired perfectly with the matcha. The matcha broth was so comforting, you could taste the bonito dashi they used to make it. I was worried the portion would be too small but it was pretty filling! The matcha latte had a beautiful deep green color and was creamy and not too sweet. I did noticed that it was a little grainy, which was the only thing I didnt like about this experience. My partner ordered a hojicha latte and said it was a 5/5 and it's her new favorite place to get hojicha latte in SF. I would definitely come back and try more of their menu. I'm eyeing that matcha silk pie!
Stonemill Matcha is a fantastic neighborhood spot serving delicious Japanese dishes alongside a wide assortment of high-quality matcha drinks and desserts. Whether you are in the mood for a katsu sando, curry over rice, ochazuke with their matcha twist, or something sweet like the matcha cream pie, it is hard to go wrong here. All of the savory dishes I have tried have been great, but the fish katsu sando is one of my absolute favorites. The huge fish fillets are perfectly fried and flaky, tucked inside pillowy shokupan and topped with tangy yuzu shio koji sauce, tomato spread, and fresh crunchy cabbage. Every component works together beautifully, with richness, brightness, and texture all in balance. The pork katsu curry over rice is another standout. The katsu comes sliced into thick pieces that are still juicy inside, and it is fried expertly so the breading stays attached as you eat it. The curry has a really balanced flavor, even if I would not mind a little more spice, while the pickled radishes provide a nice contrast. I always add an onsen egg (for an additional $2) because breaking the runny yolk and mixing it into the curry adds another layer of velvety richness and creaminess. You can also tell they use high-quality matcha in their drinks, so the beverage menu is really more about choosing what fits your mood that day vs avoiding any bad options. Stonemill Matcha is a great option for a grabbing a drink on the go, a full blown sit down meal, a quick dessert stop or all of the above!
Great spot for a caffeine fix and sandos The pork katsu sandos were delicious-- crispiness from the pork, freshiness from the cabbage and tanginess from the sauce. The pork was nicely cooked. The fish katsu sandos were good, but did not compare to the pork katsu ones in terms of flavor and wow factor. Of course had to get a drink while here! I tried the hojicha with strawberry. The strawberry paired nicely with the hojicha without overpowering it. The hojicha was nutty and earthy. There is a line to order for takeout in the restaurant and pick up is outside through a window.
Visited 8/21/26 - Matchazuke 19 This is perfect for a cold winter day! The broth was clean and refined coupled with the seaweed and crunchy rice bits! The fish was cooked to perfection and didn't smell fishy if you know what I mean. Must have been an attribute of how fresh and clean the fish was since it was buttery and rich! - Pork Katsu Sando 19.5 Solid choice if you are a more reserved eater. The sando was prepared to perfection and would accommodate even the pickiest eaters. The pork was crispy and the sauce was delicious. - Japanese Gozen 24 Originally placed my order and saw this on the menu so I had to try it. The miso soup with edmame rice was delicious. Key call outs were unagi egg, salmon sashimi + roe, and the pickled cucumber. The egg plant was delicious considering I don't typically like that, here it was flavorful and packs a punch. - Rose Matcha Latte 6.75 You could tell the matcha was ceremonial grade and prepared with care. If your usual is a rose milk tea, you have to try this! I loved the rose garnish on top for extra pizazz! - Strawberry Latte + Hojicha 7.50 The hojicha was smooth and complimented the strawberry at the bottom. The strawberry syrup at the bottom was clearly prepared fresh and was strained beautifully, no bizarre lumps of strawberry randomly that you get from other places. The bathroom was decently clean. The flow is you order at the kiosk get a number and find a seat where the food will be sent to your table. If you are on work lunch, you can order ahead and they have a take out window! Overall the food AND drinks are 5 stars.
Wow wow wow!! Some of the best matcha I have ever had and the coolest spot to visit. It feels very authentic and official, especially in the "matcha world" and the matcha was smooth and full of so much character. A strawberry matcha is always my go-to and the fresh, homemade syrup made all the difference. The "milk-bread" like toast "croutons" was the food item I opted for, but the rice bowls, platters, and desserts at nearby tables looked and smelled absolutely delectable. The workers were very kind, accommodating and inviting. They quickly helped when the lid to my matcha was broken and spilling. It is definitely fun to sit down, enjoy your matcha for a little, take in the vibe, and then take it to go and explore the area!
Beautifully decorated cafe!!!Absolutely delicious matcha drinks!! The strawberry matcha in particular is the best!!!! The fresh strawberry puree they make is fabulous!!! They have many other hot and cold drinks such as teas and lemonades and rice bowls with chicken, fish and tofu just to name a few. Also, several yummy desserts!! Great, friendly service. Lots of seating indoors and out. Does get really busy at times, but so worth the wait!!!!!
Loved this spot. The minute you step into the cafe you can tell it's going to be good. The sesame latte on ice had real sesame and delicious sesame flavor. This cafe uses real ingredients and not powdered flavorings. The rusk was crunchy and sweet. The strawberry yuzu was fruity, cool, and refreshing. It's like nothing I've ever tried.
Still one of the OG matcha spots in SF in my opinion. It has a welcoming, japandi decor. I ordered the matchazuke during my recent visit. It was delicious and comforting and it brought back memories of Japan. They also have a wide variety of beverage and dessert options, making it a great spot to order something to enjoy there or take to go.
Ambiance: A small matcha theme'd cafe located in the Mission district serving a wide variety of matcha drinks and dishes. The inside has nice lighting and both booth and chair seating to pick from and music that's not overly loud to allow work and catching up with friends. Wait time: Not a long wait time early in the morning between time of ordering and receiving your drink. If you are taking it to go there is an outdoor pick up window attached to the outside of the store for convenience and to prevent cluttering inside. Service: Friendly staff and helpful with suggestions on the menu for both drinks and food. Drinks: Ginger Matcha Latte: The strong matcha and spicy ginger flavor paired well with the sweetness of the Oat Milk creating a balanced flavor. Drink size was fair based on other matcha shops. Overall, a nice little tea shop to pick out a good quality matcha beverage, light Japanese style breakfast / brunch, or a sweet treat. Clean and quiet ambience inside with friendly staff.

I've been wanting to try this place for a while because of all the hype. It was fine for a quick matcha fix but didn't blow me away. We got the strawberry matcha latte and the hojicha palmer which were ok but the Matcha Cream Pie was the highlight with the light lemony notes in the cream. The strawberry latte was giving tart thick milk and I could barely taste the matcha. The hojicha palmer tasted like Korean pomelo tea - I think they use that marmalade in it - and again I couldn't taste the roasty aromatic notes of hojicha that I love. Note that they seat you, you don't seat yourself.
Although I ordered a matcha latte to takeaway, clearly everyone else had a different memo! The café was full of couples eating, drinking matcha and chatting away - and the doors hadn't been opened for long! My matcha latte was very flavorful (grassy & bitter) and beautifully shamrock green. Oat milk was the only alternative milk so I chose it. The female cashier seemed hurried to take my order then shoo me outside - annoying since it was still chilly. But I could see she was doing double duty as a server and cashier (dealing with walk-in customers and delivery pick ups). Luckily, I didn't wait long for my matcha latte. A Plus: One of the two the outside folding tables was available - yay! Stonemill Matcha is one of the few cafe's focused on matcha with a lovely indoor café space...if only I had time to stay & relax.
I can't believe it's taken me this long to finally try Stonemill Matcha, but I can now agree with everyone else that it is definitely worth the visit if you love matcha. Since Stonemill opens at 10 AM, I arrived around 9:40 AM. Shortly afterwards, a long line started to form behind me. Once inside, my friend and I placed our matcha orders and were seated in a cozy nook by the window. Despite the steady flow of customers throughout the morning, our drinks were brought out in about ten minutes. My matcha latte with oat milk was served in a large ceramic mug, and it was certainly one of the smoothest matcha lattes I've had in SF (where there is no shortage of contenders!). The matcha itself was slightly earthy, and the latte had a hint of sweetness to balance the flavor. I did not order food this time, but I saw several people around us order the Japanese breakfast set and matcha cream pie, which I will have to try on my next visit. Despite the constant line to enter the cafe, the ambiance inside remained relaxed and welcoming, perfect for savoring our matcha. read more

Ordered their iced matcha latte with oat milk, unsweetened as well as an iced hojicha latte with oak milk, unsweetened. Getting a pretty basic, straight forward matcha or hojicha beverage is always a good way to tell how a store's quality of matcha is. Of course just a plain matcha like usucha is a better way of telling but I like mine with oat milk. Upon first sip of the matcha latte, I could tell immediately that the matcha quality is of very low grade. It was extremely bitter even with the oat milk which was unfortunate. I sipped on it on my walk home and once I was back, I added more oat milk to the cup. That's how bitter it was! On the other hand, the hojicha latte was quite alright. Nothing to write home about but I didn't have to make my own alterations for that one. I'd come back for a hojicha latte but definitely not for their matcha. I can make it better at home..using a high quality powder. read more
Black sesame latte- nutty flavor is really good, but just tastes like black sesame in milk compared to an actual latte Pork sando- very good !! Pork is really tender, bread is delicate and soft, the shredded cabbage balances out the richness of the sauce Beyond the food, the ambiance inside was lovely with simple decor, lots of light, and a good amount of seating. This place has possibly my favorite matcha desserts I've ever tried. I've yet to see such amazing matcha desserts in SoCal (where there's plenty of soft serves, einspanners, etc) Dropped by here after having lunch and this place was busy! But I have to praise that they do work fast and service is great. Indoor seating will be a tiny wait but is worth because the inside is so lovely, more like a Japanese tea room rather than some cafes that lean towards the clean modern usually all white interior look. We got seated at this cute little tea area almost felt like a sushi bar vibe. I was impressed that I could see that they had different water kettles labeled with appropriate temperatures for brewing their matcha. So I ordered for my date and me: matcha latte, matcha pie, and the cookie trio. Matcha latte was good! Nothing too crazy but still really good, I'm more of a hojicha person nowadays but solid drink and beautiful textured milk. The PIE! This is their best dessert and for good reason. Citrusy, but not terribly sweet, rich yet still has the subtle matcha flavor. I could see potential for a fall forward hojicha version of their pie one day. $10 for a slice but worth to share Cookie trio was a good pick too. My favorite was probably the Kinako oatmeal raisin cookie and I think would pair well with any warm drink. Matcha white chocolate cookie was not too bad, I think it benefited a lot from the bit of sea salt on top. The Hojicha chocolate walnut cookie was my second favorite! I don't see many hojicha desserts happening yet in matcha cafes so this cookie was a delight to have and honestly I've gotta try making my own. So warm but not too dominated by the chocolate. I wanna come back because they've got a matcha chestnut cake I wanna try next, just stellar for the desserts read more

Wow! I can't believe this is my first time here. A sip of the matcha latte and I was instantly transported back to Japan. And that creamy matcha pie with yuzu cream topping, ahhhh I wanna buy a whole pie for my friend's bday. It's so silky I love it! Also, had the crispy fish sando, yummy!!Everything I got on my first visit was amazing. The staff is cool and the cashier is very friendly and patient with my inquiries. Came for matcha and was disappointed. Busy dine in area and line outside. Ordered for take out and the drink comes out quick. ~2 minutes. Option to mobile order as well. I got the strawberry matcha and the seasonal lavender matcha. Both drinks were bitter and tasted watered down. Default sweetness was not too sweet but the matcha didn't have the creaminess even with regular milk. Strawberry puree was good but not enough to carry the diluted matcha. The matcha cream pie was solid. Soft matcha filling with very crispy edge. Whipped cream on top was also tasty. Would not come back here for the matcha. Maybe their food is better. With matcha coming out that quick feels like it wasn't prepared well and lost its quality. Street parking here or parking garage next street over. read more

Came here to try the Japanese breakfast! They only offer it on weekdays for dine in only and they have a limited quantity, so be sure to come early. Our group came around 1pm and was able to grab the last 3 sets. Our party of 6 was able to share the 3 sets and feel relatively full. There was a range of dishes, of the selection the tempura and the silky eat was quite delicious. We found the Napa to be a bit floral for our taste but a perfect palette cleanser. The staff were the sweetest and combined tables together to let our party sit together. They even put a candle in the matcha tart for my birthday! read more

Yuzu Fish Katsu Sando- Filling flavorful sandwhich. The fish was crispy and not dry. The sauce complimented the fish well. Though I was not able to taste much yuzu. Suspect that is it got drowned out by all the other flavors. A nice alternative to the usual food they offer Hojicha Latte- . Compared to most places that offer this, this place is one of my favorites. I feel the quality of the tea they use is pretty good. Overall a nice place to sit down and enjoy a meal. Absolute favorite matcha in SF! If you prefer your matcha unsweetened like I do, just make sure to specify "no sugar" when ordering. My husband likes their Breakfast Gozen, which is exclusive to weekday dine-in. Yuzu Fish Sando was my absolute ultimate pregnancy craving; it was a seasonal item and glad it's now permanent on the menu. The only downside is that there always seem to be quite a few mosquitoes inside the restaurant. Maybe I'm just the only one bothered by it, but it's worth noting. read more

We came after lunch for dessert, it was a little bit busy but we got seated within 15 minutes. The waiter kind of forgot about us, so we were left sitting awkwardly for a while before we flagged someone down, but not huge deal since they were full. We ordered the matcha cream pie and the sencha brewed tea. The matcha cream pie was light and fluffy, it was not too sweet in the beginning but as you eat on it definitely gets sweeter and sweeter. It was nice sharing and pairing it with the green tea. I wouldn't say it has a strong matcha flavor more of a lighter and sweeter matcha note. The sencha was brewed in a glass pot and not a traditional kyusu that I thought it might come with. This was our second visit to Stonemill Matcha, and while the food remains a highlight, the drinks continue to fall short. During our first visit around Valentine's Day, the Chicken Katsu Sando was a standout--perfectly fried, non-greasy, and flavorful. The Strawberry Matcha Cream Pie was also excellent, featuring an airy texture and just the right amount of sweetness. On our most recent trip, we tried the new Teriyaki Katsu Sando; the addition of egg salad added a wonderful complexity to the flavor. While the original Katsu Sando this time was a bit smothered in sauce, the chicken itself remained impressively crispy. We also tried the Matcha Chestnut Roll, which was decent, though the standard Matcha Cream Pie felt much heavier and sweeter than the seasonal strawberry version we loved previously. Unfortunately, the drinks remain the weak point. Both the Ginger and Rose Matcha from our first visit and the Hojicha Latte from today were disappointingly watery and lacked a robust tea flavor. I came to Stonemill Matcha recently to try their Japanese Gozen or Japanese breakfast which is weekdays only for now. I love a Japanese meal set and this one was the perfect combo for a delicious and healthy lunch. The breakfast set came with soy marinated salmon belly and ikura, dashi turnip and pork, veggie tempura, crab chawanmushi, pickled cabbage and miso mushrooms served with seasoned rice w/crispy anchovies and miso soup. All the dishes complemented one another and the salmon sashimi and braised turnip and pork were especially yummy. I loved that overall it was a pretty light but very flavorful meal. I got a sparkling matcha with yuzu and brown sugar added to pair with the gozen which was refreshing with the hint of citrus and bit of sweetness. Definitely try the limited gozen set and try to come earlier in the day as I saw it's been sold out before 1pm before! read more

D1 always with a list of matcha places she wants to try. Next up Stonemill Matcha on Valencia St in San Francisco. Thankfully we found parking right away. Her friend marked this in her top 5 matcha spots in San Francisco so we had to give it a try. The cashier was either in a bad mood or she's just like that, but we weren't impressed. Her presence and attitude already put us off. Anyhow we ordered 2 strawberry matchas and a hojicha palmer. Everything tasted watered down. And the hojicha palmer was more lemonade than anything. First time trying this location and had high hopes because I've heard the quality of the matcha is amazing. However, in terms of experiences, I've heard very mixed reviews. One of my friends went a couple months ago and ordered a drink where they do the beautiful presentation of creating the drink in front of you. She recorded the presentation but when the server delivered the drink to her table, he slammed the drinks and said "Next time, ask before you record." She was in shock and apologized and deleted the video. However, when she went on their social medias, she saw that Stonemill Matcha had been actively reposting and promoting customer-recorded videos of the same presentation....... So upon hearing this, I kept my expectations low when I went to try this location. I ordered an Iced Ginger Matcha and Iced Strawberry Matcha. The wait was not too long (~5 minutes). However, the pickup experience was off-putting. The customer in front of me came up to the pickup window because she heard her name called and she received the email saying her order was ready. Unfortunately, there was another customer by the same name who had ordered food, and that was the order that was actually ready. It was a misunderstanding, but the server at the window snarkily said "This order is food." Even though the girl only came up to the window because her name was called and she received an "Order Ready" email.... Oh the cherry on top was that my ginger matcha was made wrong and had no ginger! LOOOOL. I gaslighted myself into thinking the ginger was just really light or something but upon reading reviews, customers were blown away by how strong the ginger was. Went on a Sunday noon and it there was a good amount of people. We did dine in and the wait was around 10 minutes. They have a lot of space in their dining area and a great place to relax. We ordered the rose matcha latte, matcha cream pie, and pork katsu sandwich. Rose Matcha Latte:4/5: The matcha overall was really good and you can really taste a hint of rose. The place is called Stonemill Matcha so I should've got some matcha or latte, but I digress. I've heard this place has one of the best katsu sando around and as a lover of Katsu, I couldn't skip it. There's some good places in SF like Cafe Okawari. But Katsu is really becoming the new hype of the day for Japanese food, following the Sushi, Ramen, Japanese Curry, Katsu trend. So I came in with a critical view. I feel like Yoshoku in general may be next but I yet again digress. The box sandwich came in a cute little box. The inside was packed so I couldn't get a chance to fully appreciate the cafe, but the service was nice though the pay line may have moved slower than hoped. I'll say this. This is "the" best katsu sando in the bay. The katsu is crispy, but little on the softer side. But this hardness matches perfectly with the absolutely tender, soft, juicy pork wrapped inside. I'm looking at the menu again and it all makes sense. The pork has been in shio koji, making the meat ever so tender while adding the subtle but complicated marinated flavor. The cabbage is plenty, but not over packed to take away from the main Katsu flavor. What really perfects it for me, was not only the sweet and savory katsu sauce, but the mayo with dash of I think a karashi mustard. That slight tingle, the perfect kick gives a powerful awakening of flavor that really sets the it apart. This is art, an artisan. Culinary art is the refuge no raging rampant AI slop "art" can ever hope to touch. Until the day we get some cyborg implant to our brain into gustatory, olfactory functions. Even then, I don't think any tasteless tech bro are hopeless to create anything unique or beautiful. read more

This spot is infamous in SF for matcha, and I finally got to try it while in the Mission one afternoon. There was a long line to dine in, but takeout did not take long. I got a matcha latte with oat milk, less sweet. The drink was really rich with a deep matcha flavor - super good! I did think it was missing a little something but overall was really great quality. One of my favorite cafes in San Francisco and the best place for a katsu sando! I brought a group of out-of-town friends here on a Saturday morning and we waited about 30-40 minutes for a table. It was a lot shorter than the estimated wait so we were quite happy!! We each ordered a drink, some of my friends got strawberry matcha or hojicha, and I got the black sesame latte. HIGHLY recommend if you like black sesame, the flavor was spot on. We also ordered both the pork tonkatsu and chicken katsu sandos to split, so each of us could try a little of everything. Everything was so tasty and the portions are very generous. My friends raved about the sandos for weeks afterwards! Each sandwich has a unique flavor profile so definitely try both as they are different! My friend who ordered her matcha with oat milk did say it was a bit grainy, do keep that in mind if ordering a drink with alternative milk! read more

I love the Matchazuke here! I come here literally for that every time and it taste so good. It's so comforting and nice. The salmon is so soft. I also ordered the strawberry yuzu lemonade and it's really yummy. Perfect amount of sourness. You can ordered to go outside or order first then get seated inside. The food and drinks here are good, but they're a little pricey and dining in is always kinda hectic. Chicken katsu curry - comforting and stays hot in the thick bowl, the curry is a little thinner Chicken katsu sandwich - pretty big, cut into 3 sandwiches Strawberry yuzu-ade - love this drink Black sesame cream puff - the puff part has crispy edges and the black sesame cream is good, but pretty pricey at $8 Since it's always busy, there's going to be a wait and I feel like the setup isn't optimized. There is a station where you can grab your own water and utensils, so you would think when you grab your water that you're supposed to get your own utensils too. However when our food came out, they brought out utensils so now we had extra utensils wasted and taking up space on our small table. Also their reusable water cups are tiny, so you either have to refill more times or take a larger plastic cup, leading to more plastic waste. Even with at least 6 people working in the front on the weekend, it seems like they're always running around because they're so busy. read more

Came on a Monday around 11:30am by myself. There was no wait to sit inside. Ordered the Matchazuke and Hojicha Palmer, 25% sweet. **Matchazuke** -- Well-seasoned salmon over rice with savory umami matcha-dashi broth. The rice-to-fish ratio was a bit high, and the rice quality could've been better. There were nice bits of toasted rice on top - wish there was more of that! A bit pricey for what it is. Would've been nice if there were side pickles to accompany the dish. **Hojicha Palmer** -- Refreshing, sour-forward drink. Didn't really taste the hojicha mizudashi. Maybe I could've gotten 50% sweet to balance out the sourness. Probably wouldn't get again. I'd come back to try other drinks/dishes with friends if I'm in the area, but wouldn't make a trip out of it. FYI there is no public wifi, so it's not quite a work/study cafe environment. read more

they don't have it this year yet - the rep said they are unsure whether they will roll it out and mentioned to check Instagram for any updates. as of now, they do not have a set schedule or plans to offer this item.

For me, its always busy weekends with a line out the door. Pretty slow on weekday mornings with empty tables

Not really...usually super busy and during busy times they have a rule where you can't use a laptop. Maybe during their "slow" times but they've been so popular, I haven't been when it's slow.
