Before coming here, I'd heard from two individuals that the matcha is not good here, so I was hesitant to try, but I had to give it a go anyway. Honestly, I can understand why they weren't a fan because the base unsweetened version of the drinks does taste more milk than matcha forward, but I don't think it's quite as bad as friends said. We got the seasonal mango cloud matcha and classic velvet matcha cloud drinks with oat milk, neither of which were pre-sweetened. They seemed healthier than a standard matcha latte loaded with sugar and were closer to something I would consume on a daily basis rather than something I would consider a weekend indulgence. Still, it's a bit annoying that they charge extra for sweetener if you want to add it. The drinks are already pricey, given the location and aesthetic, that it just feels like they're squeezing the margins.
The drinks were very big as pretty in person as in the pictures! The place was small but mighty. I got mine half sweet with agave. Absolutely enjoyable and worth a try if in the area.
Pretty good option in the middle of downtown SF. Barista recommended to try their banana hojicha. I enjoyed the texture (cookie sprinkled on top and the banana chips). Will come back to try the matcha drinks next time.

We came on a weekday afternoon and there was about a 20-minute wait to order and get our drinks. I ordered the Pure Matcha Lab ($7.20), which comes unsweetened. The staff mentioned that you can add agave or vanilla if you prefer some sweetness, and that they were no longer serving honey when I visited. The matcha flavor was decent, although the drink was a little milkier than my personal preference. We also tried the Matcha Strawberry Nimbus ($7.95). The matcha was pretty similar to the Pure Matcha Lab, but I really liked the strawberry cloud! It was super creamy with a strong, natural strawberry flavor. Once mixed together, the drink was pretty enjoyable, although I did notice a slightly chalky texture at times. We probably could've mixed it a little better though. Overall, I have mixed feelings about the drinks. I think they're worth trying if you've been curious about Origin Lab, especially the strawberry cloud, but I personally wasn't blown away enough to wait in a long line for them. The cups also felt a little small for the price. I'd be interested in coming back during a less busy time to try their coffee drinks. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and I appreciated their recommendations and the heads-up about the drinks being unsweetened. Seating is pretty limited, so I think it's better for a quick chat than studying or working. There's garage parking available nearby. I would give this a 3.5 if I could do half stars.
Found the spot on a whim after looking up some coffee options in the area. They appear to be newer, and I liked the variety of both coffee and matcha flavors here. It's hard to tell the style here because my drink lacked sweetness, and my husband's drink was super sweet. I ordered the hojicha strawberry, which was really pretty. If you are familiar with hojicha, it's not very sweet to begin with, but I was thinking that the strawberry cream on top would add some sweetness. Once you finish the cream, the strawberry flavor really isn't very present in the drink itself. My husband ordered the Amber velvet cloud which was caramel based. Like I mentioned it was definitely on the sweeter side, but I did like that for this drink. It was very smooth and creamy. Lines were super long here and it was really crowded for a Saturday afternoon. Parking is pretty tough in this area so if you are short in time, then you may want to skip on the spot.
A good spot, but not so much my favorite. The service was great & the drinks are decently pleasant. I got the citrus wave matcha cloud, I wanted to try something different and I've never heard of orange juice with matcha. I thought the matcha cloud itself was good, creamy, and tasty without a grassy matcha taste! The orange juice itself was also a really good, tased fresh orange juice!! But the two combined... all I tasted really was the orange juice lol. Wasn't bad! Like I said it was really good expensive orange juice with a slight hint of matcha and creaminess. I think the acidity of the orange juice just over powers the flavor of the matcha cloud. May have just ordered the wrong thing for myself but also tried the mango matcha nimbus which was also decently pleasant but not my favorite. This is definitely a good place to try out though! You may like!
Lucky enough to stay so close to Origin Lab in our most recent visit to SF! I had my eyes on it as I'm a matcha lover and appreciate high quality matcha. The menu has so many options with clouds and nimbus options too - I ordered a strawberry matcha - added vanilla because their drinks don't come sweetened unless you ask for agave or vanilla. Strawberry matcha with oat milk was fantastic! I went the next day and ordered a mango matcha - excellent again. Maybe even preferred mango to strawberry. Both are well done! Plan to wait 10-20 mins for your drink but it's worth the wait. Staff are super friendly. They have a breakfast menu available all day! Apparently they're open very late too! Beautiful decor, some seats inside and some out. Overall, loved this spot!

When it was my turn, I showed the cashier a photo of the strawberry matcha I wanted to make sure there was no confusion about my order. He then asked whether I wanted sweetener, so I asked how sweet their matcha typically is. I felt that his response was dismissive, as he simply stated that it had strawberry in it rather than explaining the sweetness level or letting me know that their matcha is intentionally unsweetened. I later noticed that this is stated on their menu, so I take responsibility for not reading that beforehand. However, I do wish the cashier had been more helpful when I specifically asked about the sweetness because I would have ordered it differently had I known. My boyfriend ordered the same drink, so the cashier confirmed that he would make two. However, he initially prepared three drinks, and I had to correct the order. The wait was approximately 15-20 minutes, which I did not mind on its own. Unfortunately, the combination of the long wait, confusion with the orders, and lack of helpful customer service made the experience less enjoyable. As for the matcha itself, it simply was not to my personal taste because I prefer a sweeter matcha. I understand that this is a matter of preference and that I should have checked the menu beforehand. However, I think the ordering experience could have been handled more clearly and professionally. Based on my experience, I would recommend being aware that their matcha is intentionally unsweetened and making sure you know exactly how you want your drink before ordering.
Came to try Origin Lab Matcha on a Saturday morning and was excited to get their matcha after seeing a line out the door but I have to say I left disappointed. I got the matcha cream top coconut water and my friend tried the sparkling water matcha and strawberry cream top. Do they look cute and aesthetic? Yes! Would I call it a true matcha drink? No. I could barely taste the matcha in the foam when I had a taste of it before mixing and once I mixed the cream top with the coconut water all I tasted was milk. There's nothing wrong with that but as someone who enjoys the flavor of matcha this was super disappointing. Service was nice and friendly. I'd round up my 3.5 stars to 4 given they're still fairly new.
Small store with a couple of tables for casual conversation. Bathroom in the back. Long line and wait during the weekends! I waited about ~15-20min for my drink. Staff is very friendly. I got a simple matcha that was alright if you like more of a lighter, floral taste. All the matcha comes unsweetened, but 1 pump of agave was really enough for me. Though it was good, knocked a star off bc it is on the pricier side - this simple drink was ~$10.
Karl the fog used to be my favorite cloud before this- it was 7:45 am on a Sunday and I had to teach hot yoga at 9 am. Usually, Karl rolls in to greet me in the morning. But today, this little cutie came to say hi c; Firstly, I was not sleep deprived, I woke up incredibly. Next, I accepted her for as sweet as she came. With expectations removed, I was able to appreciate her for as she was *happy cries*: She had no fizz but she was bubbly. Her clouds were so light that they rolled in my mouth. She did not carry any baggage in the cream or the matcha. Instead her lightness allowed me to carry more on my own. We should demand less from others so we can provide more ourselves! What a pleasant, peaceful way to enjoy my Sunday morning. Sweetness & hella caffeine really fill your physical needs, but today this sweetheart filled me spiritually. Would hug her again c: Velvet matcha cloud with almond milk, no sweetener. $7.95.
I've been looking to try a new matcha spot, and this place popped up on my Reel, so I saved it right away to try! And of course, I had to get their viral strawberry matcha. I mean, just look at how pretty the drink is! But honestly, it tastes even better than it looks! They have so many different matcha and hojicha options, along with other drinks too, so there's definitely something for everyone. I loved it and can't wait to come back to try more! The cafe is so cute and cozy, making it a great little spot to have a quick chat while enjoying a delicious drink. Definitely adding this to my matcha rotation!
My third time coming here and I love it more & more :) I always get the banana cloud latte and it's my favorite! So creamy and smooth, and the banana flavor is amazing. They also do decaf which is awesome!
I think I've found my fav matcha spot in the city! Decided on their velvet matcha cloud and was very impressed with the quality of the matcha. It was smooth, rich, and creamy, exactly how they described it. The matcha foam made the drink taste even better because it was airy! I opted for agave instead of vanilla, so I can taste more of the matcha. The employee who took my order was nice and friendly. Loved the cozy atmosphere and service. They also serve coffee for all the coffee lovers. Would love to try the Nimbus drinks next time I stop by. read more

I tried the new banana matcha! This is probably one of the better matchas I've had in the city. The banana cloud is very light and refreshing. It does not have a super creamy texture. The matcha is flavor is nice and strong. I got my drink half sweetened with agave and it's perfect. Not too sweet. Overall it's a solid 8/10. I visited on a Friday at around 11 and there was no line. Parking is very hard to find so be prepared for that. read more
Origin Lab always seems busy, so I finally made a point to try it and while the service was fast, my matcha experience was a little underwhelming. I got a matcha latte with soy milk and one pump of agave. The matcha is pre-batched and in an ice bath, the soy milk was very soy-forward and ended up overpowering the matcha, which left the drink tasting more like soy than matcha. I was hoping for a bolder, more matcha-driven cup, so that was the main letdown for me. The space is small, with a few chairs inside and two tables outside, so it's more of a grab-and-go spot than a place to settle in. Good to know going in. I can see why Origin Lab has a loyal following, especially for their cream tops and syrups. I'd be willing to give it another shot to try those, but I'd likely go with a different milk for the matcha next time. read more

Matcha and coffee shop in sf with their on matcha and coffee. Their default is no sugar in drinks but they will offer agave or vanilla as their sweetener. Small store with few seatings inside and outside. Can see them whisk and make the drinks at the counter. Came late in the day and most of their matcha cream were out. They only had the strawberry matcha left. The drink looked aesthetic topped with matcha powder and dehydrated strawberries. The foam was light and soft. Tasty strawberry flavor. The matcha was solid and I liked the profile of it. Creamy and slight nuttiness to it. Would come back to try their other flavors. read more

Love that this place is so close to my work! I found this place online and wanted to check it out because of their different cream tops. I also love all the different combinations you could essentially make. The workers are all super friendly and nice! Sometimes it gets busy but they make all the drinks as quick as possible. I've tried the hojicha with strawberry cream, matcha with yuzu cream, and matcha with strawberry cream. All of them are super tasty and always keeps me coming back! I feel like places only have certain cream tops or they don't allow all the different combos. There's definitely endless possibilities here. They also have a stamp card as well so I always bring my coworkers here too! read more
Stumbled across this cute spot while walking and was intrigued by the crowd but the drinks were pretty disappointing. We got a hojicha latte and banana latte. Both were not good. The hojicha was unsweetened by default but I had the choice to add either agave or vanilla. Seemed weird to me that those were the only options but I chose agave since it was more neutral. Unfortunately the agave flavor did not blend well with the drink and the hojicha was quite grainy without much toasted tea depth. A simple syrup or even honey would have been a better choice. It felt like this place was trying hard to be authentic by emphasizing how their drinks came unsweetened but missing the mark in terms of quality. Also the banana latte tasted heavily of artificial flavoring like banana laffy taffy. I would not recommend it at all. read more
I was in SF shopping around and I stumbled upon this place. Very small matcha shop. I went on a Saturday and it was packed. I ordered the matcha and it was quite good. One of the better matcha's I've had in SF quite frankly. Will definitely be back when I'm around the area. The lines were long but they were able to process and drink in a timely manner and the services was good, very straightforward. Overall I give this matcha spot a solid 4/5 review. Cute and modern little joint, I loved the moon art fixture on the wall. There's a tiny bench inside so you can wait for your order, but all of the seating is mostly outside and there's a tiny plant on each table. I ordered the Matcha Strawberry Nimbus and was a bit disappointed. I'd like to think of myself as a matcha connoisseur, but this one missed the mark. It just tasted like water with matcha powder and did not have the coffee consistency I was hoping for considering it looks like the same exact one from Q Specialty Coffee. I personally prefer Q. But maybe I just need to try one of their other coffees, because my coworker said it wasn't too bad. I'll give it another shot next time. read more
Worth trying, might not go back. We have been waiting for origin lab to open and stopped by to try a drink. We got the midnight mocha cloud. I believe alternative milk options are extra and the drinks automatically come unsweetened. If you want sweetened, you'll need to ask. The drink itself didn't wow us but it was cool to try it. Found this place online and wanted to try it out! Waited about 20minutes for our drink and long lines were forming so definitely something to keep note of on weekends. The strawberry matcha didn't really have a strong matcha taste and the strawberry was a bit artificial. I do wish my matcha was sweeter but I should've known after reading the note that the shop doesn't use any artificial sweeteners. On the bright side, service was nice and understanding due to the wait time for the drinks. read more

The wait felt long the first time but as I visited more times, it becomes part of the experience. Once the new opening craze passes, the cafe might reach its intended peaceful atmosphere with the wooden accents and the white and green walls. While waiting in line, one of the staff members who also takes orders comes by and hands menus to review. The menu is separated into different main drinks per page: espresso, matcha, and hojicha. The drink has a fun flair: it's cute to look at and the texture is different from the generalized matcha lattes. Each of the drinks come with a foam and this foam is thickly whipped, so on the first sip, sometimes I only get the foam. There are also different foams to choose from; I tried the strawberry and the matcha foam and they taste delicious. I also tried the yuzu foam, but I felt this was puckering sour. I have yet to try their coffees or the combination with the foam and coconut water, so that will be my next time menu decision. read more
I placed an online order for pickup at Origin Lab Coffee & Matcha since it was on my way to Union Square and I was craving an iced matcha to enjoy on my walk. There was a steady line of people out the door and it was pretty crowded inside with people waiting for their orders when I arrived (around 1pm on a Friday). It seemed that drink is hand whisked to order and therm 4-5 ppl working behind the counter had a good organized system going so the wait wasnt too long despite the long line! Service was super nice and friendly too, and the inside is cute and bright with a wall of short stools and a few chairs by the window. I got the mango cloud matcha and it was exactly what I was looking for - the mango cloud had the same flavor as a mango pudding and added just the right amount of sweeteness to the matcha latte which itself tasted unsweetened. Checked out this cute cafe after work with my two gal pals. They don't have many tables inside, but there are a few outside the cafe that we were able to get. I got the strawberry matcha and it was pretty sweet, while the taste of the matcha itself was faint. I would say the matcha soft serve did taste better than the drink I got. You can really taste more of the matcha in the soft serve. read more

Located on the corner of Kearny & Sutter Street, this spot has joined the plethora of contenders in the Chinatown/FiDi/Union Square area. Unlike most spots, Origin Lab Coffee & Matcha has 0% sweetness as its default, which allows the coffee, hojicha, matcha, and fruit flavors to shine through. Agave, honey, and vanilla syrup are available for no upcharge. It was quite packed inside and there was a line forming outside. A staff member passed out menus to customers waiting in line. Order w/the cashier and wait for your name to be called. Unfortunately we might not have picked the right time and the right drinks because everything was bad. It didn't seem like it was that busy but they were so backed up with drinks and there didn't seem to be a process. One person was making drinks and the matcha, which she kept running out of and having to go back and forth to make. While you had FOUR OTHER workers just standing around, yappin, looking confused when they tried to help with something. It took over 20 minutes to get our two drinks. During that time our cup filled with ice was melting and I didn't realize the sparkling matcha and strawberry drinks were 90% lacroix lime. Went here on two different days! First time on Fourth of July, when it was packed and busy. Baristas and everyone working that day was very professional and patient with each order. The barista also gave me suggestions for my sweetener, which ended up pairing up well with my midnight mocha cloud. On our second visit, we got two kinds of matcha, which tasted fantastic. Velvet matcha cloud was foamy and umami and absolutely loved the texture. We will definitely be back when we are in SF again!! read more

We came here on a sunny Sunday afternoon after going to an event at the Ferry Building and needed a pick-me-up. This place was on my list of matchas to try so we decided to walk there and give it a try. For being in the financial district on the weekend, I was surprised to see that they were quite busy. The line moved at a decent pace and the staff were friendly. The wait for our drinks were less than 10 minutes. We sat outside because inside was cramped, loud, and very warm. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of my drink, the velvet matcha cloud. The matcha taste was not good. It took a lot for me to finish it. My husband got the spark matcha cloud. Aesthetic cute drinks and nice interior. Great to go with a group of friends to try multiple drinks. They ran out of matcha yuzu cloud foam, so I got the coconut matcha cloud foam which was my first time trying coconut water with matcha foam. My favorite was the banana coffee, especially with the biscoff toppings and banana coffee combination. The matcha ice cream was also really good, rich in matcha flavor. read more
The shop is tiny so they cannot accommodate for the business that they are receiving but very beautiful inside. The staff was super friendly and handed us menus while we waited outside to order and told us of the wait time before placing the order so we knew what to expect. Origin Lab Coffee & Matcha is focusing on high quality coffee and ceremonial grade matcha. The menu is focusing on Matcha cloud and Strawberry cloud, with a huge different selection. Matcha Strawberry Nimbus $7.75 I got the matcha strawberry nimbus with matcha whole milk latte topped with a smooth strawberry cloud. Wow. Hands down the highest quality matcha I've ever had in SF. Truly on par with some of the best matcha I've had in Asia. My go-to order is a hot matcha latte with soy milk (unsweetened by default). The rich matcha pairs perfectly with their creamy/smooth soy milk. Service - nice and friendly workers, with an average wait time of 10-15 minutes. Sadly, they don't have an option to order ahead online! Interior - ample seating for a small coffee shop! Inside, there are 3 small tables and 5-6 single seats lined against one side of the wall. There are a few small tables outside as well. To the owners - please never take soy off the menu! I didn't know Ibrahim was the owner as he was so approachable and humble, he gave the best service and initiates interactions with each customer as if they r his friends/family. This coffee shop is on the corner of Sutter St. and i didnt know how much much foot traffic was in the area as a steady stream of people always came in. The shop has a few seats inside and outside and they have wifi so i got to work after my dentist appt and enjoy a hot matcha with oatmilk and a little agave. I appreciated they are open until 6pm as most matcha cafes closed earlier. The service was the best and i enjoyed my hot matcha, quite strong as well. I was disappointed by this matcha. I'm not used to places where it comes unsweetened and then you pay extra for sweetener. This place is new and it can get busy, so expect to wait! There are a few tables and chairs inside and a few outside as well. They have free wifi and some outlets. It's very clean and cute inside but minimalist. Service was wonderful. I don't think I'll be back because I can't justify that cost for a matcha. read more
I was craving matcha and found this cafe through TikTok and I'm so glad I did! It seems fairly new, but it's already doing very well, with a line out the door when I visited. The menu is simple without being overwhelming, and the space feels both homey and modern. It's bright, welcoming, and a great place to relax. Ibrahim, the owner, greeted us warmly and handed us a menu right away, which made for a great first impression. I ordered the matcha with the matcha cloud, and it was absolutely delicious. The matcha was sweet and flavorful, while the slightly bitter cloud provided the perfect balance. As someone who was seriously craving matcha that day, it completely hit the spot. Looking for best matcha spots in San Fran and decided to take a stroll to Organic Lab. The coffee shop is small inside and has a minimalist aesthetic with white and green color scheme m. The green also is noted with the plants. Although the space is small, the menu is robust with multiple matcha options that aren't overwhelming and select baked goods and protein snack bars I ordered the classic matcha with coconut milk , hot. After one sip, fireworks in my mouth commenced. Smooth with the classic earthy taste that's mild. Flavorful and had me wanting more after the 1st one. The shop feel's independently owned and the customer service was welcoming & professional. I can't wait to go back to get a couple more matchas before leaving San Fran. Highly recommend. read more
