I wished I enjoyed this spot more, but unsure if the price tag was worth the quality. I came here on a Wednesday morning to pick up a drink right before the workday. I was super excited to hear there was a new cafe that specializes in matcha opening around the Financial District and thought it was worth a try to walk over! The space inside is small, with only a maximum of 3 small tables for folks to sit down and wait for their drinks. Even though it does look nice inside, it is pretty compact, so I wouldn't recommend having any meetings or taking any calls in here. While I believe the service is good and they try their best to accommodate and are kind. I do believe that since they just opened, they are still on the disorganized side and are trying to figure things out. I do want to flag that when I ordered my drink, there was not a long line at all, but it did take 25 minutes to get it out. Before me, some groups ordered 6 drinks each person, which may have impacted the wait time, and I did hear the person behind me ask them to escalate their drink before mine so they could make it on time to their meeting (they did not do that, thankfully, as I was also on a strict schedule) To preference as well, all their drinks come unsweetened which is actually one of the reasons I want to come here so I can get a matcha without the sugar. That being said, I ordered a strawberry cloud matcha and was bummed out that I did not taste any strawberry flavoring and my matcha itself was more on the watery side. Since I paid $10, I wish the quality was better. Again I know that it came unsweetened but I wanted to still get some depth of flavor without adding honey or other alternatives. read more

Totally cute new little matcha and coffee shop just off Union Square. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Tiny space, but a few seats indoors and some tables and chairs on the sidewalk. The matcha is superb. All freshly hand whisked. Wonderful balanced flavor. No sugar added or needed. They also have some blended and specialty drinks I'll have to try in another visit. Make sure to pick up one of their loyalty cards for discounts and free drinks. read more

I have been so disappointed with the trend of new matcha spots in SF that look promising but their drinks turn out to be overly sweet and you can't taste the matcha at all. Thankfully Origin bucks that trend and is a great addition to this area - the staff are also friendly and the matcha is thankfully still in single digits in terms of pricing! read more

The add ons and toppings are pretty light making for a more matcha forward drink, which is good for those who prefer not too sweet and mostly tea flavor. Aside from the matcha, I really like the cute interior. The little seats and tables are great for a little chat or chill moment and the colors keep the place looking vibrant. The matcha here is not pulling punches. I saw how much matcha powder they add to the latte and it's no joke! I love that the lattes come unsweetened by default, and they make sure to remind you of that at the point of sale and ask if you want to add any sweetness - perfect execution. Loved the flavor and the cloud was also very well done. Great job! read more

Went around 4pm on a Sunday and there was no wait. I got an espresso mocha cloud with oatmilk. It was pretty good not too sweet and the foam helped balance the rest of the drink. There's seating inside and outside and sat there for a bit to recharge. I recommend this place to try and I think matcha lovers should give this place a try. read more

Looking at what's inside Origin Lab Coffee & Matcha, this vibrant café was more of a junior version of Q Specialty Coffee. Same cream cloud drinks, same coffee bean sniff bottle, and the same matcha mess! 8⁠-⁠) And of course, I'm seeing a drawn together baristas working together in one big happy family. Their cultural background songs kept the vibes of their family run café pumping! My first purchase: iced coconut water with matcha cream cloud. I might rename my first drink as Matcha Colada. Though I didn't finish the whole thing since the ice cubes blocked my sipping path, it's still a pleasant experience. I have yet to revisit Origin Lab Coffee & Matcha to try other drinks, there might be other places of interest I'm willing to share later on. read more

LOVE the concept. In a day when matcha has become so popular and every cafe including it on their menu as a money grab, it's really great to see a cafe do matcha lattes justice. Think of the good ol times when a matcha latte was strong, creamy and bright green. They hand whisk their matchas and do not skimp on the flavor since they do not use a sweetener. The thickness is perfect and does not leave you reaching for the sugar to cut it. I got the velvet matcha latte and will definitely return. I highly recommend before they become trendy or mainstream with a line out the door. Origin does not do all the theatrics that you see at all the other cafes, they rely heavily on their product, some genuine authenticity the city is missing right about now. Interior is great for sitting and chatting, with some outdoor benches to people watch. Staff is so friendly, came out from behind the bar to actually check on us and thank us for coming in. One of the staff asked me how the drink tasted but I didn't like it so I felt bad and didn't reply to her because I didn't wanna show that I didn't like it I'm so sorry queen I didn't meant to ignore you like that I came in around 4PM on a Thursday and there was no line. Their menu is only on the pamphlet so make sure not to block the front. We ordered Velvet Cloud and while the color of the matcha was a vibrant green and we knew it would be unsweetened, it just had a heavy milk flavor and the matcha wasn't shining through. The foam itself was good but the drink itself was not. read more

Wandering around San Francisco you will sometimes run into something new along the way . When I run into a new place especially it has something I enjoy I get the shiny ball syndrome. A lot of what is praised as new today has something Artificial in it. Yes the field of Artificial Intelligence for over a decade has always been intriguing to me and being part of it living in the city of San Francisco. You will run into AI labs around the city in the downtown area of San Francisco. What I really do enjoy is something new and real. I enjoy new real food that is farm to table. What I do appreciate most is a place that sells matcha which is real and not artificial. Especially when the matcha has real flavor for Don Juan de la matcha in SF. There is a new lab in downtown creating real matcha with no syrup or artificial flavors. It's on Sutter street and it's called Origin Lab Coffee and Matcha. On a Spring day on Sutter street I hit the lab. It wasn't an AI lab but a Matcha lab called Origin Lab Coffee and Matcha. I walked inside and it was a part coffee and matcha lab and part cafe. You will see lots of books related to coffee and matcha inside . There are a few pastries inside like Cheese Danish and croissants flakey like some in SF. They also have bags of roasted coffee for sale. It was cloudy in the city and I wanted a spark so I got the Spark Matcha Cloud. It had cold lime mineral water at the bottom with light matcha cloud on top with a shaved lime on top. It was not too sweet and tasty. Although it was a little bitter like some in SF the addition of matcha and sparkling mineral water made it so smooth and refreshing. Like having a Matcha 7up. Next time I stop by the lab I will try the Velvet Matcha Cloud experiment. Don Juan de la Matcha likes to keep it "real" about his favorite drink matcha topped with a twist of lime" peel" because Don Juan de la matcha likes matcha because it has properties that "heal" matcha is like having both a liquid physical and "mental meal" Don Juan de la Matcha doesn't like performative flexing for the cameras that is "superficial "I like to keep it real and keep it so "official" because technology should be the only thing in your life that's "artificial " because real ceremonial matcha in your life is very "beneficial" read more

the service is great and the staff were extremely nice, but unfortunately, I would not recommend the drinks here. firstly, I noticed they store their matcha in a transparent container, which subjects the matcha to oxidation very easily secondly, the whisk holder was upside down, so the chasen (whisk) wasn't properly stored. they use crafti matcha which I personally haven't tried but I know is pretty affordable. however, in the velvety matcha cloud ($7.50), it tasted extremely earthy and astringent, followed by bitterness and sourness. overall the drink was milky and the matcha was weak but the matcha wasn't all. the banana cream cloud ($7.95) was basically banana milk :( there was barely any espresso taste. the drinks are aesthetically pleasing so it's a pity! read more

Super cute cafe that's open early which is perfect on a Saturday morning before exploring the city. The menu had a lot of unique options for matcha and espresso drinks- mostly iced with a flavored cloud. The barista suggested a strawberry matcha for me. Presentation was quite nice and IG worthy! The matcha itself wasn't as exciting though, esp for the price point and flavor ($9ish for the drink with $0.75 oat milk sub). The cloud itself was really nice- flavorful but not overly sweet. The matcha flavor itself was a bit muddled, not bold enough to be rich and savored. Would go back to try a hot matcha or coffee. read more

This is the first time I had to throw away a drink after 2 sips. Second one for good measure. Extremely watered down and bad matcha quality. I ordered the Yuzu Matcha Cloud--no traces of yuzu. First impressions: Owner is very friendly and welcoming! Cute vibes inside, though quite small. I ordered a matcha strawberry nimbus and it soo pretty. The matcha isn't super strong but you can definitely taste the earthy notes. Very refreshing to taste it's authentic flavor without the usual syrup. The strawberry flavor of the foam was very light but added a nice sweet note to the drink. My total came out to $8.42.. WOW that's pricey. I had the unsweetened iced matcha latte at Origin Lab and it was AMAZING. You can actually taste the matcha because they're generous with it, unlike a lot of places. The service was incredible too. There is indoor and outdoor seating; I was able to grab an empty spot late in the morning on a weekend, but I don't think seating is always readily available. It's not a huge space.

This is one of the first coffee shops I've been to where you can actually taste the notes in the coffee beans. Like somehow the flavors weren't diluted or reduced. The Flat White was well made and the Iced Vanilla Paste Latte was smooth and bold with the vanilla paste adding a deeper richness and aromatic sweetness that was super enjoyable. Such a wonderful spot!

The layered coffee / espresso cake is excellent, just the right amount of coffee, sweetness and cream. It's subtly sweet and just the right harmony of bite through the layers. It's a little small portioned but love the sleek rectangular slice. They often have seasonal, Asian inspired flavors such as sesame Kouign Amann. For holidays, order ahead, and arrive early. I went to the Folsom St location and, honestly, it was one of the most accessible coffee shops I've been to, especially in SF. Very wheelchair friendly, including a clean bathroom, and the space was big enough that even once it got busy I didn't feel in the way. Also appreciated that it wasn't all high tops and tall seating. Coffee was very good. We did the flight, which was a fun way to taste how differently the same bean could show up. Pastries were good too. I got my Dandelion fix with a cookie, and the ham and cheese croissant was solid. Also took beans home and made a really tasty pour over. Definitely on my must-visit-again list.
