Came here to celebrate my grandma's bday. We got here about 12:30pm on a Sunday and was able to get a seat right away but by the time we left, it was packed with a waitlist. The server were great and was very attentive to my 8 month old baby and offer him water with a straw and a disposable bowl. The food was great! Everything came out fast. For 2 people we spent about 130$ the staff was really kind. Thai tea was too milky for my taste. Fresh cucumber 10/10 very flavorful along with a great crunch. Green beans 10/10 I could have just ate those and been satisfied. Brussels sprouts with truffle salt 10/10 another amazing vegetable! Ordered the usual since I love the spicy pork dumplings that are pan-fried on one side and gushing with delicious warm soup inside. This time it was meh. The pan fried side was chewy and hard. A bit overdone which affected the overall taste and texture of the dumplings. Not sure if it's worth it for the price and I ended up eating the other parts of the dumplings that weren't chewy. It is so pretty when you walk in here! The warm lighting and black and white murals make it so inviting. The open windows allow for natural light and the kitchen is open concept allowing for you to see how the dumpling gets made literally! So cool. The chili oil on the pork dumplings are delicious. I've been to their other locations but not to this one, and we all left happy and full! This Dumpling Story location is easy to pass by but deceiving in size. It's sleek and stylish decor-wise. The vibes are super casual, which is nice. They have a bar with seating, a large table in the middle, and smaller tables. We were one of the first customers, having come in at opening, but it got busy fast! Service was good, and food came out fast. We shared everything family style. We ordered: Crab and Pork Xiao Long Bao, Shrimp and Squash Xiao Long Bao, Vegetable Dumplings, Juicy Pork Bao, and House Special Sesame Paste Noodles. What I enjoy is the overall consistency and quality of their items compared to those at their other restaurants. My personal favorites were the pork dumplings we ordered. The pan-fried part was crispy, and the steamed ones were juicy and flavorful. The shrimp and squash lacked flavor, as if they were cut-up pieces thrown into a dumpling. I recommend getting their pork dumplings! If you're in the mood for dumplings in the Mission District, I recommend Dumpling Story. They have sister restaurants across the country, so it's great to see them expanding! Great food, service, and ambiance. I'd love to come back! Sleek, modern decor with a casual vibe and lots of potted plants and eclectic art pieces hanging from the ceiling. Couldn't tell if they were trying too hard to define its character to fit into the Mission, or if it added to the theme/vibe of the food experience. Anywho, we ordered the XLB, green beans, cucumber salad, and pan-fried dumplings, and everything was pretty good. Nothing to rave about, but hey there's no Din Tai Fung in the city. The soup dumplings are the specialty here and they deliver - juicy and flavorful. Fair warning though: they splatter when you bite in, so lean over your plate and use that soup spoon they give you. The cucumber salad was garlicky and a little spicy, and a nice refreshing counter to the richer stuff. Right off Valencia in the heart of the Mission, so parking can be a bit of a pain. Without intending to, I ended up at this place to enjoy my New Year's lunch. I had an enjoyable experience. The staff are friendly, and although it looks small from the outside, it's pretty spacious, clean, and tidy inside. Also, you can see the kitchen in the back and watch your order being prepared. I ordered the xiao long bao, shengjian bao, jellyfish salad, and lamb curry boiled dumplings. The xiao long bao were solid, with flavorful broth and filling. The shengjian bao were good as well, although I remember the bottoms being crispier the last time I had them. The jellyfish salad is worth trying if you're looking for something a little unusual. It has a light, refreshing texture and flavor that almost feels vegetarian despite being a seafood dish. We tried the Chicken Soup Dumpling (Xi Bao) and the Boiled Shiitake Mushroom & Chicken Dumpling. The dumpling skin here was the thinnest of all the places we tried that day, which immediately set them apart. Personally, I enjoyed the shiitake mushroom & chicken dumpling more, it had a richer, tastier bite. The soup dumplings were very juicy and felt authentic, but the chicken filling itself was quite mild. Perfectly cooked, just lightly seasoned, simple and clean, but a bit more flavor would have taken it to the next level. The food was really good. We loved the Liang Pi and Mala Xiao long bao. Would definitely come back again!
