We went at 11:30am on a weekend and were seated immediately. The food was okay, not bad but not great. My favorite dish was the Sichuan spicy chicken - it was crispy and had good heat. The Shanghai style steamed pork dumplings (XLB) had thick skin but tasted good. The wontons in chili oil didn't have much chili flavor at all. A Chinese restaurant in Castro district specializing in authentic Shanghai-style dumplings and dim sum. We found this when we were in the area and try figure out what to have for dinner. The restaurant is not that large with nice interior, bar. The restaurant serve authentic Chinese dishes. it seems the also serves cocktail as it has bar but we didn't see it in the menu. It was pretty busy and we were lucky we get table. The menu is not overwhelming and have plenty to choose from. We ordered Szechuan Fish Fillet w/ Pickled Cabbage in House Broth and Shanghai style pork dumpling. Our order was ready pretty quickly. Both dishes were yummy. I like Szechuan Fish Fillet w/ Pickled Cabbage in House Broth a lot as it is not numbing and not that sour. Regularly finding myself in both Hayes Valley and the Castro I've two observations: * The dumpling place in Hayes Valley is perpetually packed, with crowds routinely waiting for a table; and * I've never once noticed a wait at the Castro's Dumpling Kitchen. The take-away of these two facts was a (false) assumption that Dumpling Kitchen was less than good and nothing could be further from the truth. On a Friday evening my party of 3 was immediately seated and served and we liked it all: Green Onion Pancake ($8.95), well-spiced Szechuan Dan Dan Noodles ($16.80), Steamed Pork Dumplings (5 pcs., $11.80), Steamed Scallop & Shrimp Har Gow (4 pcs., $11.80), and a pot of Jasmine tea ($5.25). A solo diner beside us ordered only chicken wings about which she seemed less enthusiastic but order right and you'll leave as happy and full as we did. Service here is the sole weak link. Dan Dan Noodles came out before the Green Onion Pancake which was intended as an appetizer. One dish never came out at all (so we canceled it when asking for the check). And servers are somewhat inattentive when they're not actually serving you (i.e. you may need to flag them down). Still, I appreciated everything about this place. Quick, well-priced, accessible with little to no wait, and really good food. Dumpling Kitchen ought to be as busy as that place in Hayes Valley. read more

Came here on a cold gloomy day and it was a perfect comfort meal. I got the salt and pepper wings were super fresh literally had to wait for it to cool down. The cucumber salad was something you can skip it was alright. The corn and chicken soup was the excellent and need on a cold sf day. Over all great experience and the service was amazing and quick. Service is bad, dumplings are pretty good. Don't expect your waitresses to speak English. Simply order, savor your water and be prepared to ask for more, as it comes around sparingly. We stopped by on the way to another shop and saw this little food spot and decided to check it out. There was a bunch of people eating, but we were seated right away. The menu is QR code and you order on your phone. They have a good amount of dim sum staples. The only thing I was disappointed by was that there was no rice option. GREEN BEANS: this was delicious. The perfect amount of garlic and the beans were cooked well. Shrimp dumplings: comes in 4 pieces, but a good size. Siu Mai: also 4 pieces and a decent size per dumpling. XLB: this came with a ginger sauce. The broth in this wasn't too hot, and wasn't too full. The dumpling itself was great because the wrapper wasn't too thin where the broth and meat are escaping. SHRIMP TOAST: this was great but I did feel like it was a bit skimpy on the shrimp. The sauce on this was a good topping. Went to a pride night market in the district and there was a food stand that I got soup dumplings from to hold me over for dinner. Well they were so incredibly good that i ended up going to the restaurant which I am so thankful for. They still allowed my friend and I to order while we waited for a table since the kitchen was closing, and service was almost as incredible as every dish we got. The restaurant itself is small but they have a bar and clearly do well for take out. cannot wait to come back next time I'm in town for my next fix!! read more

I had dinner on Saturday evening around 6pm and we found easily a table for me, my husband and our daughter. We ordered the dumplings boiled fish and chive (delicious and my favorite) steamed chicken and shiitake baos (really good) and the black truffle and beef fried rice (good also this one and also my daughter ate it). We didn't try anything else because the portions are really good, so we were already full. But a friend of mine told me that their sesame chicken is a must have, so next time. SOOOO good. Had a work trip in Sacramento and made the drive here just to eat and do a turn around trip. My fave were the pan fried pork buns. I wish I would've just ordered multiple of that. Honey walnut prawns were delicious but literally came with only 12. When she served it to us it looked like someone had eaten 1/4 of it already. Fried rice with chicken was also good but barely had a few bits of chicken. XLB was juicy but just ok. Had to circle a few times for metered street parking. I was there with five friends on a Saturday evening. We had a reservation and was seated promptly. Our order was taken promptly. But when it came time to serve our food the service sucked! The first person got their food. A few minutes later the second person got their food. A few more minutes and we got our appetizers. Few more minutes and the third person got their food. A few more minutes then the fourth person got their food. I waited and waited till I finally had to get a waiter's attention to ask where my food was. She checked and said it would be a few more minutes before. I ordered combination chow mein. Not a complicated dish. Always a solid and delicious spot, this place never disappoints and its easy to get reservations for large parties unlike dumpling home. A good spot for out of towners/visiting friends. Came here during the recent Castro night market and was not disappointed. Walked in with party of 4 and we were all ready to eat, getting ready for all the walking. We were sat immediately since they just cleaned and prepped a table as we walked in. The restaurant is small so take out might work if it's busy. We ordered the sizzling beef, kingpin chicken, Shanghai noodles, scallop and shrimp har gow and pan fried dumpling. The sizzling beef was sooo good and went well with the noodles and some rice. The chicken was great, the dim sum we got, we had to fight not to order another because it was so good. Overall, this place is definitely a great addition to the Castro! I came here for lunch on a Saturday and it was moderately busy, but there was no wait to be seated. I had the five spice beef stew noodles and the soup dumplings. The five spice beef stew noodle was less than average. Of all the beef stew noodles I've had in my life, this was the least seasoned and had the least fixings. As for the soup dumplings, the attached photo should tell you all you need to know. Of the 6 dumplings, only 2 had barely any soup. The other 4 dumplings were dry and ruptured on arrival. The taste of a "soup dumpling" is there, but leaves much to be desired. For $12/tray of dumplings, it was an utter failure. I think I'll stick to Dumpling Story/Home. While I'm not a fan of soup dumplings served in aluminum trays at Dumpling House, even those soup dumplings were better than these. read more

The fried dumplings were pretty tasty, though. The chocolate dumplings were interesting but pretty much just seemed like it was Nutella stuffed into a soup dumpling skin. Dumpling kitchen has been a family favorite for years but this is my first time at this location. We ordered shen jian bao, xlb, string beans, chow mein, salt and pepper fried fish, and dry fried beef. First thing I noticed is that you don't get sat with tea, which is what I'm used to from the original location. You actually have to pay for it here but I guess this location isn't typically Asian so they felt the need to do that here. Another thing I noticed was that they didn't have the same garlic chili oil. This location has straight chili oil, just the oil no chilis or garlic in it which was....interesting. The garlic chili oil at the other location is one of my favorite chili oils in the bay so that was a lil disappointing. On to the food. It was good!! Same quality and taste as the original location. The only new thing we ordered was the dry fried beef which was SO SO SO SPICY. The Szechuan peppercorns should've given it away but it had a good flavor! Just a tongue numbing experience if you eat the red peppercorns as well. read more

The menu also offers chocolate XLB, which i did not see at the other location (i haven't been recently to see if they added it). Unfortunately, they sold out of the chocolate baos when I arrived :( the food is always good and the service was nothing to complain about. The only downside is that your food doesn't come out all at once. Sometimes we found ourselves with a meat dish with no rice/noodles. Nevertheless, this place is delicious and will always hit the spot. I recommend trying the sizzling beef. 9/10 and i'll definitely be back. read more

Unfortunately a little disappointed by the items my friends I ordered for dinner here. We were in the area after our soulcycle class and was craving Chinese food so we popped in here and was seated right away. We ordered the mapo tofu, sizzling rice soup, pan fried pork buns, and wontons in chili oil. The mapo tofu was pretty good, it had the sichuan peppercorn numbing taste and the tofu was soft and silky, I just wish it had a little bit more meat in it. The sizzling rice soup was very tasty and probably my favorite dish of the night. The two dumpling dishes felt a bit lackluster than my expectations (since this place is called dumpling kitchen). The pan fried pork buns weren't bad, but I felt it wasn't as crunchy on the bottom as it could've been. The meat inside was good though. The wontons in chili oil were not good, the chili oil had no spice to it, it was a very pale orange, it didn't feel like true chili oil. This came up when I searched "cheap eats" in the Castro on Yelp. And I totally agree! I think we got 7 dishes to share - family of 4, two teens - and the bill was around $62 before tip. We all had water to drink. Overall excellent value. The Shanghai style pan fried pork dumplings were the table favorite. We also enjoyed the vegetarian spring rolls, and the teens loved the BBQ pork bao buns. The steamed Shanghai style pork dumplings were good but we preferred the pan fried. The green onion pancake was a little bland. We got boiled pork and chive dumplings which half the table enjoyed. The atmosphere here is really chill, it's often a nice respite from the craziness outside on Castro street. The servers aren't always super fluent in english but I've never had an issue where you can't easily communicate via gestures and points in those cases. They've always been nice to us at least, though on busier nights it can be difficult to get them to check on you once your food as been brought out but nothing really overtly bad with the service. The decor's super charming. The food we've generally found really solid, I'm actually of the opinion that the dim sum here isn't the restaraunt's strongest trait. It's not bad by any means but I actually find some of their other dishes a lot more consistent. Husband and I are especially fond of the Lion's Head Meatball. read more

Not a good experience for gluten free diners. Because this restaurant advertises gluten free dumplings, and was posted on the find me gluten free site, I thought they have some good options but unfortunately was wrong. Their new menu has just two gluten free dishes, two types of rice steamed dumplings. And they are good! But unfortunately there is no gluten free soy sauce for dipping, either. I asked if the seaweed salad was gluten free also because a lot of the time it is. The waitress after checking said she wasn't sure because there is MSG. And I know MSG itself is gluten free, but not sure if there was some confusion. I'm thankful she was overly cautious, but disappointed I couldn't eat it. I understand how complicated gluten free stuff is, but I would advise the restaurant to have a guide for their employees for reference for gluten free questions. And offer gluten free soy sauce, that is, if continuing to advertise as gluten free. I hate to give a low rating but I would have expected more for a business that promotes it as an option. And of course always hope this helps to improve things. As someone who is celiac I would love to eat here and support an awesome local business too, but I do have to be careful! read more

My brother took me to this place while visiting San Francisco. We went right when it opened for the evening dinner rush and was seated right away. The place is very small, but cozy and clean. Their bathroom was super clean and easy to find. The staff was friendly and explained dishes to us that were in Chinese on the menu. We ordered the soup, dumplings, steamed dumplings, and the sizzling rice soup. We also ordered a scallion pancake. The food came out at different times, which is very typical in this type of restaurant. We got the scallion pancake and the soup right away. Both were delicious! The sizzling rice soup is made with a clear chicken broth and has some vegetables. The main ingredients are chicken, pork, shrimp, and the sizzling rice. When the rice arrived to the table it was popping... And when it is dropped into the soup, it sizzles hence the name. The dumplings were very tasty. And they were a good size. The pork dumplings are very hot when they come out so you need to be careful so you don't burn your tongue. The vegetable dumplings were pretty big and packed. The pork dumplings come six to a basket and the vegetable dumplings are four to a basket. The restaurant has other items on the menu, some of which are our favorites, like honey walnut shrimp.
