Great service. Very nice staff. This is a very small restaurant. Right now, the menu items are limited. That allowed the kitchen to make the food quicker and move the line quicker. With the Japanese chef here in the first month, the line is long. Last weekend, it was a 2 hour wait. This weekend, it was only about 1 hour wait, but we showed up earlier. Edomae: 4.5/5. The tempura was done masterfully. I would eat them quickly before they got cold. Eat the rice last with the sauce. Definitely need the extra sauce from the table! Thanks for providing the extra sauce. It also came with miso soup and ginger on the side. The only improvement I would suggest is to provide a spoon for the rice. And no, with the sauce mixed with the rice, you could not pick up the rice easily with chopsticks. Yes, will be back for udon and other items!

If you want to be the first round of tables they seat I would highly recommend to get there around 9:30am. After 10am the line builds up pretty quickly. Once they open the line moves pretty slow as they have very few tables and can only sit about 8-10 groups at a time. I was pretty disappointed that even at opening they were out of a lot of items. They didn't have any udon or unagi. All tempura bowls are pretty similar but the Ten-Bara Shrimp Tendon with Ikura bowl was my favorite since the tempura pieces were smaller and made it a lot easier to eat. Potato salad had good flavor but was such a small portion. It was also very heavy on the mayo with little potato Overall food was decent but not worth waiting a couple hours for

3.5 STARS Is Hannosuke worth a 3 hour wait? No. But, what is except a TJ's tote bag. J/k! IMHO, Hannosuke is worth a 30 minute wait...max. Waiting in long lines is a suburban Olympic sport in this area. And, we had time to kill so here we are. Soft opening yesterday, Hannosuke took over Curry Life. It's their third location in the U.S. and second in CA. It's Japanese-owned and operated by the same owner behind Tsujita Artisan Noodle in the same plaza. Walk-ins only. Inside, there's only 6 tables plus bar seating. There's two picnic tables outside but they'll only seat you there if you're dining with your dog. Fyi, no restroom onsite (broken?). We were directed to use Tsujita's restroom. Arrived at 10:30 am and we were seated at 1:15 pm (table turnover wasn't the quickest). Your order is taken while in line so once seated, your food promptly arrives. M E N U Specialty: Tendon aka Tempura + Don (Tempura Rice Bowl). Everything is fried except the grilled unagi but it was sold out within an hour. Despite what's shown on socials, NO UDON AVAILABLE yet and customers didn't find out until ordering. F O O D * "Signature" Edomae Tendon: Anago (conger eel), two shrimp, squid, seaweed, shishito pepper, rice, ontama ($26.50) - Includes miso soup + pickled ginger Unfortunately, the tempura seemed to have been batch-fried or prepared too far in advance which compromised both its flavor and texture. Also, the batter was noticeably darker than expected. The highlight was the large slab of anago - light and crunchy with a mild, flaky center. One bite of the squid, and it slid out of the thick batter. The shrimp was sad...cold and soggy. I think we received the bottom batch of steamed rice, as the texture wasn't ideal. However, breaking into that rich, runny yolk and mixing it with the savory-sweet, umami rich Edomae-style tendon tare brought everything together and helped save the rice. * Side - Shrimp Tempura ($3.95 x3) This wasn't mine but I had to try one. Unlike the tempura don, this was clearly fried to order, served piping hot. The shrimp was fresh and tender with a light, airy, and crunchy batter, tho I personally prefer a more textured, lacy coating. It was good but IMHO, nothing special from what you can find at plenty of other Japanese restos...without having to wait hours in line. They charge $1 for tentsuyu [tempura] dipping sauce which is annoying - that's like having to pay for ketchup with your fries. * Spicy Original Tendon Sauce ($1.50) Skip, not spicy at all. S E R V I C E A quiet soft opening without influencer promo would've greatly benefited the small staff because they were completely inundated. Communication and line management was poor - there was only one staff managing the line, handing out menus, taking orders, AND answering questions. Many people behind us waited for hours only to eventually be turned away. Overall, Hannosuke has potential but needs improvement in figuring out how to ensure every customer receives tempura and rice at peak freshness. Giving them grace cuz it's a soft opening after all...3.5 stars rounded up for the friendly staff and dog-friendly outdoor seating.

Came here with my friend earlier today to take advantage of the soft opening and had a great experience. The place opens at 11 a.m., and we got into line around 10:15-ish; by then, we were probably 28/29 in line, and by 1100, there were easily another 40 people behind us, and we were seated by 1130 or so. Even so, the line moved well; however, it is a small space with limited tables, so it's easier to go alone with just one other person (I think there are only 7 or 8 tables) and offer to sit at the counter. The food was excellent - as was the service. The tempura came out quickly, was light and crunchy, tasted great, and the sauce was great. I opted for the Yuzu glazed chicken tendon and my friend got the same thing - spicy version. Both came with miso, sauce, and ginger. The bowl also had a poached egg to mix with the rice, which had a sweeter sauce mixed in. Overall, the experience was great! The only negative is that parking is rough in Strawberry Park, so best to come early and during the week if you can, since it's generally a literal nightmare on the weekend. Another good tip is to come with a friend; one person can wait in line while the other picks up a snack or coffee at the different shops in the center, which makes waiting a little easier.

Went on opening day for dinner and they had already run out of udon. So if that's what you're coming for, definitely go early! Located in Strawberry Plaza, so parking is free, but I can see it getting pretty busy on weekends. We got in line at 4:20 PM and didn't get seated until 5:37 PM. While waiting, they gave us the menu and had us mark down our order, so by the time we sat down, they were already prepping our food. Pretty efficient! The staff was super friendly and attentive. They also gave us stickers as a little gift for coming on opening day. The restaurant is pretty small -- about 5 tables inside, 6 bar seats, and 2 outdoor tables. We got the Edomae Tendon ($26) and Ten Bara Shrimp Tendon without ikura ($22). Both came with miso soup, which was just okay. The tendons were tasty, but I do think they're a little pricey for the portion. 8/10 for me. I'd probably come back once the opening hype dies down because that wait was definitely a long one. Overall, worth trying if you're in the area and don't mind waiting!

I'm so excited that this famous Tokyo tempura restaurant is finally here in San Jose! They specialize in Edo-style tempura bowls (tendon), so I tried their signature "The Edomae Tendon," and it totally lived up to my expectations! It came with a whole jumbo anago (conger eel, sourced fresh from Toyosu Market), fresh shrimp, squid, seaweed, and shishito pepper over rice, topped with a rich soft-boiled egg that you mix into the rice. It's also served with miso soup and sushi ginger. Such a hearty meal with a generous portion at a reasonable price! Surprisingly, it didn't feel as heavy as I expected for a deep-fried dish. The tempura batter was honestly quite light, and the flavors were well-balanced with all the different ingredients in the bowl. I also added a mini udon bowl, and I loved the springy texture of the udon and the flavorful broth. Such a perfect combo!

The store is a bit small, but aside from that, everything looked very nice and clean. We came on their soft opening day, so our wait time was about an hour before we were seated, which honestly wasn't too bad. The food overall was amazing. I had the Ten-Bara Shrimp Tendon, while my wife originally wanted to try the udon. Unfortunately, they were sold out, so she went with the Edomae Tendon instead. The Ten-Bara Shrimp Tendon was genuinely impressive. Having all the vegetables, prawns, and squid cut into bite-sized pieces and tempura-fried was a genius idea because it maximized the surface area for that delicious crunch. I also went with the spicy sauce version, and it was definitely worth it. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience I give this place 9.2/10.

[Food] Grand opening - Potato Salad ($9.50): Creamy, delicious, and light! Their homemade aioli mayo pairs well with everything. I've never had potato salad with a soft boiled egg and I must say it's a game changer. It is a bit pricy, but I would order this again. - Maitake Tempura ($1.95): Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside with a light batter. Don't forget to dip it in some of their tendon sauce. - Edomae Tendon ($26.50): This is their signature bowl with includes anago (conger eel), shrimp, squid, seaweed, shishito pepper, and a soft boiled egg. After setting aside some of the tempura on the extra plate provided, spread the soft boiled egg over the fluffy rice and enjoy! The portion was huge and was basically 2 meals for me. Would order this again! - Ten-Bara Shrimp Tendon w/ Ikura ($25.50): Instead of serving the ingredients as a whole, this came with bite sized shrimp, squid, pumpkin, eggplant, sweet potato, soft boiled egg, seaweed, shishito pepper, topped with ikura, which made it a little easier to eat. I do like the whole ingredient tempura too, depends what you're feeling for. [Service] - Fast, friendly, helpful - Arrived on a Tuesday at 11:20am for 2 and was seated an hour and 20 mins later during their soft opening. - We were given a number after about 30 mins of waiting in line, then given an order sheet to ensure we got our food shortly after being seated. [Ambiance] - Small restaurant with indoor tables, bar seats, and a few outdoor tables. - Parking can get packed as it is in the same plaza as Mitsuwa. [Overall] - Their tempura was fresh, light, and wasn't too oily compared to some restaurants that do offer tempura. The sauce was delicious, but I'm hoping I can ask for them to have the sauce on the side as I like my tempura more on the crispy side! - Would love to visit again when I'm craving tempura and udon! - Unpopular opinion/hot take: Those complaining and giving a low rating based off wait time and not getting food because they ran out is a bit crazy to me because this is a soft/grand opening.. they are still figuring things out and I honestly feel like people are being too harsh. I've experienced all of that before from other restaurants but I never base my reviews off their initial opening. If people didn't want to wait during a restaurant's first few weeks/months of opening they should've stayed home and waited till the hype died down or come earlier.

My friend and I showed up on Saturday, 9/12, at 10am and we were the third party in line. So, an hour early. We got the numbers 6, 7! So, already off to a good start. We ordered the Edomae Tendon signature bowl to share which comes with a miso soup. We also ordered edamame and sides of maitake/mushroom and sweet potato. They sadly did not have broccoli or chicken as a side option today. We could have ordered a bowl of tempura chicken, but apparently not as a side because we were told it is saved for the bowls of chicken. Also, no udon at all. These missing options were a bummer. With that said, we enjoyed what we ordered. The soft boiled egg was perfectly prepared and when broken, greatly enhanced the experience of eating the rice. The stand out tempura were the shrimp, eel, and shishito peppers. The tempura was light, crispy, and hot. The miso soup was made with a fresh umami miso paste. The sauce for the tempura was excellent and on the table. The restaurant was clean and the service was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our meal and will be back to try the chicken. They took our order while we were in line and after we were seated and ordered drinks, we were brought our hot food. They had an orderly, efficient process, and the food was tasty. I definitely recommend checking it out!

Service was nice, the only items on the menu were the rice bowls for soft opening (udon not available yet). The food was so-so, rice was cold cold and barely enough sauce. The tempura was alright but the rice should at least be warm. I would come back to try the udon later but sadly this was a miss for me so far.

How exciting we got Kaneko Hannosuke now to come to the Bay Area. For quality of this caliber, it's not crazy expensive and fair overall. There was a huge line for soft opening today that winded around to Bandai. They are a globally known restaurant known for Edomae tempura. There are many locations globally so that's amazing San Jose is now one as the other California location is in SoCal. Quality is authentic Japanese flavors, and they use traditional cooking methods. Team is wonderful and friendly, and the ambience is modern. The traditional Japanese music adds a nice touch.

Arrived around 11:30 on a Sunday and waited one hour or so to be seated. They gave waiting tickets and menu so you order before being seated. Food arrived 5 mins and noticed the food was not hot and crunchy. Only the miso soup is hot. Egg is overcooked, not runny as the video showed on screen. Too steep for the price with the serving small.

I and my husband went last night. Since they opened September 3id, there is long line, waiting time about 1 hour. We ordered seafood tendon. It was good amount and tastes good.

We accidentally showed when they were closed (our fault, didn't properly research), took some time to shop around, came back around 5PM by happenstance (no line at the moment) and were seated quickly with excellent service. A nice waitress took our orders, ice-cold water was given by a nice waiter (a pitcher of water sat beside us with chopsticks, spoons, and a napkin dispenser for convenience), then our food was promptly brought out by the waitress and waiter. Even faster than fast food service. Staff was incredibly polite and informational to my mother who had questions. They were very observant and aware of everything not just at our table but others and got us the check and a container for leftovers. Excellent customer service. Drinks and glasses served cold were a nice touch, water as well. The karaage (four pieces) was served first. Juicy and hot chicken thighs, nicely crisped up. Came with an excellent sweet sauce and lime to pair. Shortly after, my spicy tuna bowl. The spice and the taste were seemingly mild for my preference (however as I ate it with my spicy tonkotsu ramen broth, it became the perfect match), rice was perfect and the portion was heavier than I assumed which was a happy plus as a ricer lover. Personally love the seaweed bits. Whilst we began to eat the karaage, the waiter came and set our bowls of spicy tonkotsu ramens onto the table. We were able to take our time to eat our chicken, since as we eventually began to eat our noodles, they were still firm and the soup base was hot but not too hot to eat and enjoy right away. The egg is prepared absolutely perfect, the best I've had yet. It's the type of egg made for ramen. Broth was milky and delicious. I asked for extra woodear mushroom and menma on the side, as I do at every ramen spot I encounter, however I shouldn't have here because the topping portions were generous in-standing. However, I did still spoil myself to the extra toppings, so not a total loss since I really love menma and mushroom. I was also impressed by the spicy paste on top, actually felt a kick as someone who enjoys extremely spicy food. I overheard customers ask for "extra firm" noodles, so I might do so but the noodles were still wonderfully firm. Our order altogether came out to $89.98, not including tip. Overall, a wonderful space to frequent if you enjoy ramen and fast service. I'll have to come back with my brother :D

Although it is a parking lot, it was very busy -- lots of businesses nearby and had to loop/drive around to find parking. Even entering the parking lot felt like it took awhile. This is a small ramsn shop inside, not too many seatings and may be difficult for large parties. There's table seating and bar seating. If i would to guess, it might fit 30-50 people tops or maybe less. We ordered the food and felt the food came out very quickly. We ordered both the chashu ramen and tonkotsu ramen. The portions felt small, broth isn't bad though. I enjoyed it. However, this place is very different than the tsujita annex in socal. I thought the portions were bigger at the annex. So in comparison, I prefer the tsujita annex over this location. This place overall isn't bad but not sure if I would return.

The main room has a lot of 4- and 2- person tables, but we somehow lucked out and got a tatami room to ourselves. Unluckily, the AC was broken and it was a 90 degree day, but they did their best with box fans. We had the pork and salmon donburis and they arrived quickly and were amazing! No complaints.

Anywho, we ordered a variety of items to try: new stamina don, clam chowder croquette, kani chirashi bento, and a salmon kama bento. Regarding the food: New stamina don came with slice beef, sliced beef tongue, braised pork, poached egg, and kimchi over rice. The sliced beef was cooked to rare, and the braised pork was very tender. The rice also came with the poached egg, kewpie mayo and a lemon, mixing it all together with the rice made it have a nice creamy flavor. Clam chowder croquette was something I have never heard of before, so I definitely wanted to try it. This was delicious, would definitely get it again. A fried crispy croquette with clam chowder in it but also some mashed potatoes and tonkotsu sauce on top. Kani chirashi bento had snow crab, fish roe over rice, rolled egg omelette, sashimi, fried boneless chicken, and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The sashimi came with 4 pieces, 2 tuna and 2 salmon. the tuna was a little fishy but the soy sauce helped. The salmon was actually pretty good - good fattiness. The fried chicken was fine, a few pieces were dry. Overall this bento was good. Salmon Kama bento is salmon collar over rice, fried boneless chicken, takoyaki and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The salmon collar needed some salt in my opinion. For the food overall, it was a little bit under seasoned for me but for portion, price and quality are good.

The restaurant was pretty full so not sure how long it would take if we waited. The restaurant is inside a plaza with some other stores and restaurants but there was plenty of space even in the evening. They have a happy hour menu from 7 to 10 pm on Saturdays, but they differ depending on the day. They have some appetizers and drinks on the happy hour menu, so we tried the gyoza, mochi and side tempura. The mochi had a house made sauce glaze that was sweet and salty, and came with nori as a wrap. The texture of the mochi was really soft and chewy. The gyoza were really crispy with a soft interior. We ended up ordering a second round of them. The tempura was nicely fried with not too much batter. The shrimp was really succulent and I liked that they have mushroom tempura too. From their regular menu, we ordered a bunch of food. I tried the yaki-onigiri ochazuke with salmon, fried chicken skin, the eggplant and various skewers. The fried chicken skin was really nice and crispy, and came with a ponzu sauce and mayo to dip in. The yaki onigiri was nicely grilled and still had crispy bits when submerged in the soup. I was really excited that they have shishamo/smelt. It was nicely roasted and didn't have any overtly fishy flavor. Everyone at my table really enjoyed their food. I'd definitely come back here to try their other dishes!

The menu is built around yakitori, grilled seafood, fried dishes, and other small plates meant to be shared over drinks. We had the kurobuta pork sausages, grilled whole squid, chicken thigh skewer, shishito peppers with bonito flakes, grilled corn, and crispy panko-fried shrimp. Everything was simply prepared, properly cooked, and excellent. The squid was beautifully charred, the sausages were plump and blistered, and the shrimp were exceptionally crisp. We washed it all down with a bottle of chilled junmai sake. A nice touch: they bring over a basket filled with mismatched ceramic and glass sake cups so everyone can choose their own. Excellent food, comfortable atmosphere, and a welcome reminder that Japanese cuisine offers much more than sushi and ramen.
