mushroom, tofu soup; Ginger slices and wasabi
Daisy Z.

This restaurant is not too far away from my new home so we decided to try it for lunch as part of our exploration of the neighborhood. We were seated right away and was told to scan the QR code for the menu. Unfortunately there was no cell signal for us so we had to ask for the paper menu. The lunch bento box looked like a good deal especially if you wanted to add on some rolls. The portions were quite good. We got the Chicken Teriyaki bento and added a salmon skin roll. Requested for the salmon skin to be crisped - which they did do. Also had the Salmon Teriyaki lunch and added a cucumber roll to that. Had an order of Ebi negiri. The bento lunches came with mushroom, tofu soup, salad, and rice. The soup was ok - a little light in flaovr and the salad dressing tasted like a mayo dressing. The Chicken Teriyaki and Salmon Teriyaki were good. The cucumber roll was ok. The roll was not a good roll so it did fall apart when you pick it up. The salmon skin roll was crisply done as requested but the sauce on the roll didn't go well with the roll. It was just OK - the flavor was a little flat unfortunately. The ebi was fresh. they also brought ginger and wasabi to the table. The wasabi was not "spicy' at all. We used quite a bit of it and there was no burn..:-( We got water at the table but did not get served any tea. This was a separate charge. Don't know that I would make this my goto Sushi spot. While I did take photos of our lunch, for some reason - I lost it so cannot post it this time. :-(

Agedashi Tofu

Fantastic sushi spot offering value omakase. Cozy restaurant with great service. Currently have a Valentine's Day promo for an Hokkaido unagi heart shaped. Restaurant also decorated with Valentine's Day theme. Started with agedashi tofu and chicken karrage. Both fried with a hard crisp. Tofu has a slightly sweet sauce. The chicken was with dry spices and has a strong cumin flavor. Baked scallop roll was also solid. The omakase was $46 for 10 pieces. Comes all at once beautifully plated with fresh wasabi. Huge fish to rice ratio. The fish is big enough to where you can take 2 bites. My favorite was the otoro tuna which was buttery. The white fishes were also tasty with good texture. Unfortunately they don't tell you which fish was given since it's chef choice daily. Would definitely come back for the omakase. Tight parking spots but has parking behind and the sides of this plaza.

I love it here! Staff is always so friendly and quick. The parking can be tough but you can check the residential area and walk. I love getting the oysters to start and the melt in my mouth roll. There is sometimes a wait on the weekends, but it's so good here! Everything tastes fresh and delicious.

Very good, light, no fluff, solid sushi restaurant. We ordered the lunch special sashimi, a roll, and the omakase. Food came out very quickly and the service was nice and friendly. It's ideal for a quick lunch with a big menu and some solid choices. The only caveat here is that it's incredibly hard to find parking, but there's always people coming and going so if you're lucky, you should be OK!

No complaints about the food but the service was bad. Some grumpy guy sat us and took our order and was just altogether not friendly. The table was also next to a cart full of dirty dishes that they kept piling into, it was off putting. The table was also closest to the bathroom. They should just remove that table, customers deserve a better dining experience.

Omakase

Amami sushi definitely has good value omakase! At its price point it is definitely worth trying. Just to note: the omakase is served all at once. But the variety and portions are amazing! Aside from the omakase, we got the hibachi and the oyster shooters. The hibachi is a little misleading - the menu pictures show caviar as the garnish but it is actually served with tobiko (the fine print says tobiko). The oyster shooters had a lot of different fish roe served with it. Despite how cool it looked, it was incredibly fishy. My guess is the oyster was overpowering the other flavors. I wouldn't order the hibachi or oyster shooters again, but I would come back just for the omakase! Parking is plentiful, parking lot and street parking available. Staff are not Japanese. The interior is cute, they have a whiteboard with the deals of the day

Quality sushi presented in a beautiful way! I joined a large party of friends and we came a bit close to last call. The service was great and they were very understanding and accommodating of our party. Definitely try coming before last call though... We got the Chef's choice omakase and each piece was generous and fresh. Would recommend getting this! The fish collar was also very tasty! Coming back with my partner soon.

Tempura

We've been to Amami a few times and typically enjoy our meal. This time around our food fell a bit flat. The tempura was heavily battered and not our favorite. The omakase was good but not great. My partner wanted extra protein and got the chicken teriyaki, wouldn't order again. The seafood udon had a generous amount of toppings paired with a light but tasty broth. I did enjoy this dish. All in all, our meal was OK. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for me, for freshness.

Whole Squid

Got the omakase, salmon lover roll, and squid. Truly was unimpressed by the omakase nigiri. I liked the cut and portion of the fish but the flavors were just not there. I wouldn't say getting omakase here was worth it. I had to dunk it in sauce for more flavor. The salmon lover's salmon skin was too overpowering. It was unexpected that the skin was in there but it didn't work as a whole. As a fellow salmon lover, I was not in love. The squid was slightly burnt. Waiters were attentive and provided great service. It's a small restaurant and good for casual dinner.

Was recommended to try this place with a group of friends who raved about this restaurant. Compared to the other high end sushi restaurants I've tried, the experience at Amami was okay. The deluxe is priced decently for omakase (chefs choice) which is what we ordered. Also tried the Uni on top of seared toro. The presentation is beautiful with slender cuts of fish, but the quality of the fish is not as fresh as I would've liked. Restaurant does get busy so even with reservations we've had to wait longer as it during their peak time on the weekend.

We chose appetizers off the specials board since they intrigued us! Lovely calamari! Friendly staff, and they were prompt on taking our order. Plenty of seating, for small of larger groups. We just had 2 people and shared most of our orders so the table filled up a bit since we had sharing plates. But once a plate was empty, staff was there to remove it.

first time to Amami sushi in Stevens Creek Their sushi was probably the best I've had in the south bay. The service was really good. They kept checking on us to see if we were doing fine. The ambience is a sit down Japanese restaurant and we were the first ones to be sat

Vanni T.

My friend took me here for my birthday dinner. Food was delicious but service was not up to par, especially on such a slow night. A few of our items arrived lukewarm, even the soup. Definitely worth a revisit however, especially for the sake.

Ask the Community - Amami Shima Sushi

Can you do take out for the omakase set?

Yes we do.

Do you have outdoor dining?

I am afraid they don't offer outdoor dining.

Is this Amami in Cupertino affiliated with Amami Sushi in San Bruno/Daly City/San Francisco?

yes

Will you ever reopen for lunch? Please bring lunch back - I used to come here 2x a week for lunch for years, haven't been able to find anything even close to comparable in quality and value.

We will open for lunch soon because we are short staffed now, but we have already arranged. Hopefully we could reopen for lunch shortly! Thank you for your support!

Is this location still open for lunch? The grub hub take out is not working. And hours listed only list dinner now.

We are still not ready for lunch yet! Sorry for the inconvenience!

I would like to know if I could call for a pick up order? Or can I be there to make a pick up order? Went there one Thursday night and the waiter said they don't take togo order.

During busy hours, they do not accept to go orders. I'm not sure why this is the case if ordering through apps still allow take out ordering. It just doesn't make sense.

Hello owner, I love your sushi and would like to order for pick up. But it's scary when one of the review said the Sushi chef doesn't have mash on. Would you help me to verify it ? so I will be a happy return customer. Thank you

Have they raised their price for the Omakase during Covid or do they just upcharge for it on DoorDash?

If you call in for pick up it will be the same price as usual. If you order from DoorDash or GrubHub the price would be different because they change our menus prices. So I would recommend if you pick up by yourself just order by phone better… Read more

Are they currently open for takeout?

Will open for takeout on next Wednesday April 1st from 4:00 pm to 8:30pm.

Is it the same as Amami in South City & San Bruno?

I would like to know too 🤔

Is this place run by Japanese?

No, they are not Japanese.

Can you get omakase as takeout?

Yes, I've done it on a few occasions!

Do they charge for use of a private room?

The restaurant is pretty small. I don't think they have private rooms available.

Is it closed until Jan 9th?

Yes. They are closed till Jan 9th. Will not open till the 10th

I got the Kiwami Vegan extra spicy and my friend got the Kiwami Tonkotsu spicy (adding spice costs 50c more) and we received our food after 20 minutes. Kiwami Vegan (5/5): This was delicious! The curry broth and the plant based meat were well seasoned and the yuzu gave the dish a nice citrus kick. I love spicy food and usually feel like ramen is not spicy enough, but this was the perfect level. Noodles were tasty and there was a good noodle to soup ratio. My friend gave the Kiwami Tonkotsu a 4/5 and said it could be a bit more flavorful. She tried some of my Kiwami Vegan and said she would order that next time instead Overall, amazing vegan ramen! Although there isn't a vegetarian option, the vegan option is plenty flavorful on its own and I didn't feel like I was missing anything. Ramen Hajime now joins Marufuku Ramen in my list of favorite ramen shops in the bay. I would definitely return!

Definitely not a standout dish, but the rest of the meal was delectable. Sometimes, you don't need vegetables during dinner. Had to order the hamachi carpaccio, unagi meshi, and green tea creme brulee as per usual, but the Nikomi hamburg was a pleasant surprise! The flavor profile is deeply reminiscent of a HK pork chop baked rice if juicy pork meatballs were used. The service is always friendly here and our food came out quickly! My only minor gripe was the pacing as we had 3 dishes on our small square table at one point in the meal. I understand though, since they clearly had a busy night ahead as the restaurant filled up quickly after 7:30 PM. Ambience is kind of loud due to the chatter and closely spaced tables. They really try to maximize the seating here. Make sure you wear socks in case you end up being seated in the carpet area.

My aunt asked if we could sit at a regular table instead, and the hostess asked whether we had any medical reason. I felt offended at that moment, and I also believe it's inappropriate and potentially unlawful to ask that kind of question. On top of that, while we were still eating, they brought us the bill halfway through the meal. Even though we understand there is a 90-minute dining limit, the whole experience made us feel like they were trying to rush us out. This is definitely not a place we would come back to or recommend to friends.

We ordered our favorite appetizer first and then placed the rest of our order. There were both a female and a male server, and neither of them made us feel welcome at all. The male server did not write anything down while taking our order and barely responded when I spoke. He gave no acknowledgment whatsoever, so I honestly could not tell whether he even heard me. It felt like the staff simply wanted us to leave as quickly as possible because the restaurant closes at 8 PM. We even rushed through our meal and made sure to leave before 8 PM out of consideration for the staff, yet we were still treated like an inconvenience the entire time. What shocked me the most was the hygiene issue. The black-haired female server at the counter near the entrance dropped a small stainless steel basket used for checks onto the floor, stepped on it with her shoe, then picked it up with her hands and placed it back without cleaning or sanitizing it. After that, she never washed or sanitized her hands, yet continued touching napkins, utensils, and setting tables. That is completely unacceptable, especially in a restaurant. To make things worse, my husband ordered a soju cocktail, and the male server placed the alcoholic drink directly in front of me even though I am visibly 9 months pregnant with a very large baby bump. He said nothing and walked away. Not once did the staff say "enjoy your meal" when serving our food. They never checked on our table even once afterward, and we never received any water or napkin refills. The only time the male server came back was after cleaning the restroom to tell us the kitchen was closing. If customers arriving after 7 PM are such an inconvenience, then please put a sign on the door telling people not to come in after that time. And most importantly, please teach your staff proper hygiene and basic customer service. This was one of the most unwelcoming and unsanitary dining experiences I have ever had.
