We happen to be in the Strawberry plaza in San Jose looking for a spot to eat for dinner. We decided to check out Tomi Sushi. We arrived on a Saturday evening for dinner recently. The Japanese restaurant is located in the nice Strawberry plaza off Moorpark Avenue and Saratoga Avenue in San Jose. Mitsuwa Market is located in the same plaza. Parking is accessible in the large parking lot out front. The restaurant has nice cultural modern decor. There are plenty of tables and booths for both large and small groups for dine in. There is a sushi bar to the right when you walk in. The atmosphere is bustling and welcoming. We ordered gyoza, chicken karaage, tako yaki, tempura appetizer, 2 sake nigiri, 2 unagi nigiri. Bbq eel roll, dragon roll, spicy salmon roll, sprite, and a glass of Chardonnay. Everything was delicious and authentic. Some of the standout dishes were the karaage, tempura, unagi nigiri, and the bbq ell roll. The karaage was nice and crispy. The tempura was tasty and went very well with the tempura sauce. The unagi was scrumptious with every bite. The bbq eel roll was appetizing and worth the price. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Tomi Sushi. The staff were nice and accommodating. We appreciated the vibe which was family friendly, authentic, and lively. The price point was more than fair. We hope to be back to try other dishes on the menu. read more

This restaurant has been on my list for ages, I finally convinced my partner to come for a date night recently. There's always a line for this place, sometimes forming right before they open. Located in the Mistuwa plaza, parking can be pretty hit or miss. We were seated at the bar, we didn't have a preference and waited maybe 20 minutes to be seated. I had the tomi special roll, while my partner ordered the chicken teriyaki and california roll bento. Wow, the fish was incredibly fresh and nicely prepared. The fish on top was seared but didn't taste heavily of gas as many other seared fish I have had. Staff was very nice and attentive. I did enjoy being at the bar because you get to see the sushi chefs making your dinner. Very nicely designed interior. My partner's bento was good too. Chicken teriyaki was delicious. Looking forward to my next visit. It might be my favorite restaurant in the plaza. read more

I came here for dinner one weekend evening around 6pm, the wait wasn't too long. Tomi Sushi has a variety of specials each day that change on their menu, when I went they had the awabi (abalone) sushi and kinmedai (golden eye snapper) sushi and ordered those items in addition to the sushi dinner, and seafood yosenabe. The awabi sushi was a bit chewy, and crunchy - with a similar texture to squid but tougher. This was okay - but was happy to try it. The kinmedai sushi had a soft fish texture with some subtle sweetness. This was fine. The sushi dinner, this is one of the items I got here previously and it was okay - nothing too special, good fish variety. It also comes with a miso soup, and a side salad. The seafood yosenabe was pretty good, it had a mix of pieces of salmon, a white fish, fish cake, tofu, shrimp, napa cabbage and carrots in a dashi broth with fish flavor. This also came with a bowl of rice, miso soup and a salad. Decent portion and great for a cold day. Overall - this time the food was okay for me. read more

Came by for dinner the other night and it was a rather mediocre experience. Parking is available in the private strip mall lot or on nearby residential streets. The restaurant was mostly empty during the weeknight. Started off with the miso soup and it was pretty watered down, unlike the ones I've had in Japan. Moved on to the Salmon Nitsuke and it was ok. The belly parts were fatty and the other pieces were rather dry...bummer. The Tomi Sushi roll was the highlight with super fresh scallops and spicy tuna topped with some raw onions and aioli. The spinach with seasme paste was lacklustre as the seasme was rather muted...bummer. Lunch bentos used to be our go to spot..first time coming back after a few years. 2 of us ordered: sushi dinner $28.90 8pc toyosu sashimi $28.90 tonkatsu meal $19.90 The sashimi spread was a bit disappointing, was hoping for better cuts. Tomi Sushi is an old school sushi joint in the Mitsua shopping center that is priced relatively more reasonably than other comparable sushi spots in the area. My preferred order here is the Unagi Don (eel over rice) but I get misc rolls and nigiri sometimes instead. The Unagi Don is pretty straightforward but does also include a couple carrots and potato section plus pickled ginger - but mostly unagi, sauce and rice. Simple and very good. And the pickup experience for takeout is very easy with the cashier located right up front by the door. Great place. read more

I've passed this restaurant multiple times and finally got around to trying it on a Friday night. We waited 10 minutes for a seat at the bar. The inside is quite packed and very clean. There are many tables and 10 or so seats at the sushi bar. Upon sitting, we had our drink orders taken immediately. There are daily specials posted on the board, one paper menu for nigiri, rolls, and hand rolls as well as a regular appetizer and entree menu. I ordered the sushi special which was an assortment of nigiri with a fatty tuna roll. Every slice of fish was fresh, buttery, and had the perfect amount of rice. The bluefin tuna nigiri melted in my mouth I wish I ordered more. A standout for us was the Toni special roll which has your choice of fish inside with seared salmon and scallop on the outside. Needless to say, the service, the speed at which the food was served, and the quality of fish were fantastic. Easily one of the best quality sushi spots close to me. read more

Tomi Sushi is my go to when craving sushi. Good quality and the service is the best. Maki is the G.O.A.T. She always puts a smile on my face when I see her. Their lunch menu is slightly different from their dinner. From prices to portions. They also sometimes serve salmon soup instead of the typical miso soup for lunch. I like it, it's a nice change. They're closed on Tuesdays, and closed everyday between 1:30-5:00. It's a small restaurant and there's often a wait. If you ask me, its worth the wait. read more

They always have a wide selection of fresh cuts of fish, and I love how appetizers and dishes are written out on paper posted on the walls around the restaurant. We ordered the omakase nigiri set. It comes with a bowl of miso soup, lightly fried shrimp head, and 10 pieces of nigiri chosen by the chef. We also ordered sliced mackerel and a grilled yellowtail fin. The miso soup had a really rich sweet dash broth, and the shrimp was fried perfectly. My favorite nigiri was the thinly sliced engawa, halibut fin, which was lightly salted with lemon on top. It had a light crunchy texture while still being fatty. The anago, eel, was really fresh and flaky. I also really liked the smoky char on the grilled yellowtail, dipping it in soy sauce. read more

The vibe is no-frills: a couple rooms, sushi bar up front. Service is hit or miss, but if you go at dinner, check out the specials by the door. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, especially the hamachi toro and toro, which were rich, buttery, and honestly the standout of the night. We also ordered the aji, caterpillar roll, spicy tuna roll, seaweed salad, and miso soup. The caterpillar roll was super satisfying with great texture, and the spicy tuna actually had flavor instead of just drowning in sauce like a lot of places do. Even the small details were done right. Came here for a sushi lunch for 1 and had a good experience. I ordered a few random nigiri pieces and a roll for lunch. The lunch came with miso soup, which included a chunk of salmon. The soup was excellent, however, the salmon was very bony and even after picking most of bones out of the soup and off the salmon, my mouth still found one. That said, the nigiri was excellent! The only real negatives of the experience were the bone and the parking! Strawberry Park has notoriously bad parking, so if you have a reservation, try to show up early. read more

The fish was fresh, no fishy taste. I really enjoyed the yellowtail and I usually don't like it so I was pleasantly surprised. Parking was not difficult to find. I enjoy coming here, and I have been here multiple times over the recent years. The food has been pretty spot on, and prices are expected. But last night I came by and ordered the tempura dinner and it came out looking burnt. If you look at other photos of the tempura, the batter looks fluffy and well done. But my tempura was over fried and just not very good. Besides that, the sushi is decent and recently went up in price. They have rotating specials and the servers are generally very hospital. I am definitely coming back and I am sorry to leave a negative review, I only hope my review is seen and quality is enforced. Next time, I will be sure to complain. read more

For lunch, I chose the $100 Omakase. Given my personal preference--unless I am absolutely starving, I only eat sushi with akazu rice, the Edo-style--I opted for the sashimi-focused course. At Tomi Sushi, the shari is not Edo-style red vinegar rice, so sashimi was naturally the better match for me. The sashimi was in the "fresh-forward" style: pristine sourcing, precise knife work, and careful temperature control. The expression is clean and direct, without the layered fatty aromas and umami depth that come from aging fish. Portions were generous, and the ingredients themselves were of high quality. Among the other dishes, the Makini stood out as the highlight. The simmered fish carried depth yet remained light on the palate, with a well-judged balance of sweetness and saltiness. The finish was lingering and elegant--proof of skilled technique and a strong command of fire and seasoning. Visited during the middle of lunch crowd during the weekday. Sat at the sushi bar. Lots of menu options: omikase, special of the day & regular menu. Including a descent selection of plant forward items when wanting a break from animal protein. 3 sushi chefs and 2 wait staff managing busy lunch crowd in dimly lit restaurant making me feel I'm dining in an old fishing hut in Japan. Colleague ordered bento box and a california roll, portion was enough for her to make two meals. I thoroughly enjoyed my plant forward selection of steamed spinach with bonito flakes, vegetarian roll (surprisingly much pricier than other rolls), and the grilled eggplant. One of my favourite date night is four dollar sign omakase. But obviously that's not realistic on a frequent basis. When I'm craving for one of those date nights but don't want to spend four dollar signs, we go to Sushi Tomi!! We always know that we'll be happy because that's what Sushi Tomi is - reliable! We always ONLY get their nigiris (from their a-la-carte nigiri menu, not the sets) and we sometimes think that the freshness of their fish rival other high end sushi restaurants. IMO this is the best way to eat here - only get their nigiri's and try your best to order from their handwritten special fish menu. They probably make less money from fresh nigiri than a cooked bento box so that's why I think it's a better bang for your buck!! Their scallops and tuna are very good - the baseline for a good sushi spot ;) Uni can vary sometimes but still very good for a day to day spot. We also love the Eel Roll!!!! We get it each time and I always alternate between the nigiri's and the eel roll for the perfect bites! We've never tried their omakase as I enjoy selecting my preferred nigiris instead at a place like this. Before going, set your expectations and know that it will usually be at least a 30 minute wait for weekend dinners. Though annoying, I think it's a testament that I'm not the only one that think this is a great place! There is no online waitlist, you must be physically present to put your name down. I find that the wait here is shorter than the Mountain View location and the atmosphere is more comfortable as it's more spacious and quiet. While I love the nigiri's, a growth area for them is their service. They can be slow at times with getting items (such as chopsticks or refilling tea) but it doesn't stop us from thinking that's it's one of our favourite spots! read more

Miso soup is always served least 10min before actual entree being served. Then one order comes and the other is brought almost as the other person finishes the food. I didn't know this was related to a popular sushi spot in Mountain View called Sushi Tomi. When I lived in the area, it was my go to spot in town as it had a good balance of fresh fish and delicious sushi options for the right price. The trade off often is the line you had to wait if you didn't just order pickup over the phone. This was true here at Tomi Sushi (confusing right) too. This is not to be confused with the AYCE Tomi Sushi Buffet which friends from outside often get confused with due to google and such. Anyways, if you have been to the Mountain View location, then its more or less the same. If not, its a slightly larger location but still very much busy. They have their usual menu and paper menu to fill out as well as specials on the walls you should look out for if you want a hidden find. The staff are all super friendly. All the reasons why Mountain View location was great translates here as well (including the busy parking lot :)) read more

Mine comes with salad . Both lunch comes with soup ( today is salmon soup with fresh vegetables) , rice and fruit . I enjoyed the grilled Saba . It was seasoned with and grilled to perfection. Today I got a big pieces of fish like 8 oz . It was delicious. However there were tiny bones on the side . You must be careful not to swallow any . I love the salmon soup more than the regular miso soup . There was big bones inside too and needed to be careful as well . The tuna and salmon sashimi were fresh and delicious. I got 6 thick pieces and was very full. My friend loved his chicken , it was tender and flavorful. Larger portions than usually . It was probably 10 oz of chicken. Both lunch bento were $19.99 each . Craving sashimi, came for early weekday dinner, surprised how many customers were already seated. Then I was not really surprised, Tomi Sushi has always been a local favorite. Craving sated with Chirashi bowl. There are 3 versions and I picked the middle one. Good fish selection and rice seasoned just right. The shrimp tempura was excellently balanced with veggies and starch. The tobiko sushi and spider roll were basically desserts. :-) The house white wine was, I think, Sauvignon Blanc. I had chicken and my friend had a sushi bento, which he liked and said he was hungry. His bento had miso soup and rice. My chicken was well cooked and I asked for teriyaki sauce on the side. Ambiance This place is packed and I had a small chair and table with my friend, it was a little bit tight. Service This was fine. I think they closed at 1:30 so we got kicked out at 1:45 ish, which was a little annoying since I know people tend to have late lunch and it opens at 5 again. Hidden gym! Wifey and I had 6 orders. The combo was ok. The ala-carte was awesome. I suggest ordering off the NIGIRI and sashimi checkbox menu, fish karaage was unique and perfect, super cold junmai daiginjo was outstanding, & loved the nigiri and sashimi. They are real pros. Can't wait to go back and explore more menu items. Thank you for not allowing hairy pets in the restaurant like others in valley fair area. Be ready/aware of long lines at Tomi. Restaurant insider secret: restaurants next to quality grocery stores have a lean inventory system because they can. If they run short on inventory, just walk next door to the Japanese grocery store.
