I've never reviewed a business before, but this experience was so disappointing that I felt compelled to share it. I visited Ocean Pearl with my family for dinner on Saturday, and the service was consistently poor from beginning to end. No one greeted us or explained how the seating worked. After trying to figure out where to sign up, I finally asked a staff member and was given a number. When I asked how long the wait would be, I was told they didn't know. We waited about 1 1/2 hours before our number was finally called. Even then, no one showed us to the table or greeted us, and we had to ask if the table was ours. Once seated, we waited about 10 minutes for menus and had to ask for a booster and utensils for our young child. We thought they may simply have been overwhelmed that night, so we decided to give the restaurant another chance the next morning. Unfortunately, the service was still poor--again, no greeting, very little attention, and we had to ask for basic items. The food was also disappointing; the salt-and-pepper fish was extremely salty. We didn't send it back because we didn't want to make a fuss. The experience became especially uncomfortable when we paid. My husband left a 9% tip based on the service. The waitress took the bill, looked directly at the tip, and waved the bill in front of our family while loudly saying that the tip was too little and should be at least 15% after tax. She also pointed out that we had tipped less than 15% the night before. This happened publicly in the dining room and was extremely embarrassing and inappropriate. Looking back, I wonder if that was also why several staff members repeatedly watched and stared at us during our visit, after remembering our 10% tip from the previous night. Tips are voluntary and, in my view, should reflect the quality of service. If a restaurant has a specific service charge or required gratuity, that should be clearly disclosed to customers in advance. Regardless of the tip amount, no customer should be publicly shamed over it. For future customers, I would recommend keeping your receipt so you can verify the final charge and tip. We will not be returning. I sincerely hope future customers are treated with more courtesy and respect. read more

They're so regular here they've made friends with some of the staff who let them call to make special reservations lol I've come here twice with my family and each time we've had a wonderful meal. Ocean Pearl is located in Milpitas Square off Barber Lane. It is the very last building to the left. The inside is split into 2 main rooms - the first a small waiting room with an area to order roast duck/pork to-go, and a larger dining area with big round tables, lazy susans, and fish on display. Some of the dishes I've tried: - Roast pork - this comes in a half or full order. The meat is pretty standard, slightly dry. But the skin is nice and crisp. - Cold poached golden chicken - the star is the ginger scallion sauce that comes with this dish. The chicken meat is also juicy, but lotta bones. - Salted egg yolk fried shrimp - one of our favorites and is great fresh. Good crunchy shell and tasty salted egg yolk flavor. - Salt and pepper fried fish filets - another one of our favorites. This comes with jalapeno and garlic pieces. The batter is slightly sweet but airy. - Beef chow fun - great, greasy, beefy. Can't go wrong - Special combo fried rice - this has fish roe and crab with lap cheong. It's good, but not my personal favorite. - Stir fried pork belly with green beans - great option for fatty meat and some fiber. Ordered the roast duck rice plate on Saturday evening, and it was just a few minutes wait for takeout, quick and easy. Service was standard. When I took it out of the bag, that container was heavy! We came here on Saturday dinner after a concert . It was 7:45 pm . The parking lot was pretty full and we parked a little farther than walked back to the restaurant. Inside all the tables were taken. We waited 15 minutes two tables for 10 and one table for 4 were available. We took the table for 4. Most items on the menu are delicious. This is an authentic Cantonese style restaurant. Portion of the dinner dishes were huge ! Ingredients were fresh and I admired the cooking skill of the chef ! We ordered eight treasures seafood fried rice . It came inside a clay pot and a heating pad under to keep it warm while dinning . It had shrimps , cuttlefish, etc and was stirred fry enough to get the " wok chee " 鍋氣！ I loved the steamed giant clams in garlic over cellphone noodles 蒜茸粉絲蒸貴妃蚌。This is the portion of only 2 giant clams . The juice were sweet and intensely aromatic. We ordered the French style beef cube . The sauce was super sweet ( sugar ) that I didn't prefer . The beef was tender and I could taste the baking soda they used to tenderize the beef . This was my least favorite dish . I loved the cooked vegetables pea sprouts tips in minced garlic and covered with dried scallop gravy. It was delicious and healthy. Huge portion. Good local spot for traditional Cantonese style flavors as well as roasted duck, pork belly, and soy sauce chicken! I've been here a handful of times and usually order the same dishes. Here's what I would recommend: ginger scallion lobster (they usually have a deal for 2 - 1lb lobsters for around $40+ dollars), salt and pepper chicken wings, pan-fried noodles with seafood, beef stir fry with mushrooms and bell peppers, seafood clay pot, side order of roasted duck or pork belly! They also serve complimentary sweet green bean dessert at the end of your meal. Overall prices are $25+ on average per dish, good portion for sharing with family, but yes on the pricey side. I like coming to this restaurant because it's smaller than most other Chinese restaurants, the max occupancy is about ~100 people. The quick rundown for you: + Sichuan string beans with pork belly is a generous portion with lots of meat and not overly spicy where my 11yo daughter can eat it (5 stars) + Beef with mushrooms and bell peppers were my kids' favorite because their meat is tender and cooked medium rare. The kids didn't eat the veggies but they devoured all of the protein. (5 stars) + Seafood fried rice has a salted egg flavor with lots of shrimp and assorted seafood. Great Cantonese style restaurant my family likes to frequent! They have a deli in the front and their restaurant behind. The staff is attentive but it can get pretty busy especially on the weekends. We usually order an assortment of dishes family style, usually vegetables, meats and noodles. Their ingredients are always fresh and served hot. My gf and I stopped by after visiting my parents. We've been here before and it's become one of our favorite Chinese bbq spots that we find has great value, taste and quality of food, and great service that deserves a 5 star rating. Our latest visit to Ocean Pearl unfortunately left us quite disappointed. We were immediately seated around 11:30am and were provided tea. Ordering and asking for any help was a bit inattentive even for my standards. The wait staff was forgetful and seemed to prioritize other guests. Besides us, there were 4-5 other tables dining before the busy lunch rush. We ordered the bbq rice plates that come with the soup of the day and some boiled bok choi. The soup of the day was a tofu shrimp soup, which we were fine with. Our preference is the soup that had pork bits, veggies, and was much heartier than this one. My gf's order came with soy sauce chicken and roast duck. Mine came with the Macau roast pork and soy sauce chicken. We immediately noticed the significant drop in quality and quantity of food. Both orders of soy sauce chicken were skinny with no meat and had little to choose from. The roast duck didn't have a good fat to meat ratio (mostly fat). Finally, the Macau roast pork wasn't made well with skin that says it was from a super market. It seemed like they cut regular square pieces of the pork into halves to save costs as well. The tastes of the proteins were closely compared to a super market as well like 99 ranch. The price per dish was about $16.99 and goes up or down $2.00 if you decide to have more meat options. A price we welcome unless they cut down on quality and quantity of the proteins. Overall, we had a pretty disappointing meal at Ocean Pearl. What was once our favorite restaurant to get Chinese bbq is now somewhere we would only consider if the conditions to our needs were dire. While I'm sure the other food options on their menu might warrant a visit, their Chinese bbq selections will be a hard pass for my possible next visit. With so many other Asian restaurants in the same plaza, it'll be hard for us to make another visit any time soon. They have a custom-made tea-pot instead of the standard no-brand porcelain ones, also a nice touch. We had a great lunch. They were classic Cantonese style Chinese foods and everything was well-made, services prompt and friendly too. I was quite happy for the meal. And even happier at the price. Disappointing Experience with Pressured Tipping and Poor Attitude I had a frustrating visit to [Ocean Pearl ] recently. Our waitress provided service that started okay but turned uncomfortable at the end. . When it came time to pay, I sign the bill and gave $10 tip for my lunch..She took the bill and take look, put down the sign bill than she strongly pressured me to leave a high tip, claiming that giving a lower amount would be "illegal." She also became rude and gave me a bad attitude when I didn't immediately agree. Same as the other table next me , she hold up the bill and look up as how much tip customer written down. Tipping is a voluntary way to show appreciation for good service--it's not mandatory or illegal to choose your own amount. Being told otherwise, combined with the negative attitude, left a bad taste after what should have been a simple meal. I won't be returning if this is how customers are treated over optional gratuity. read more

I am a big fan of eating dim sum and Chinese food especially on a lovely Sunday afternoon. For some reason that particular day and that type of food both go very well together. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon of course. Parking is easy and plentiful. The restaurant is located in a nice area at the McCarthy Ranch plaza. Unfortunately we arrived much later than we were hoping to. The server informed us that they ran out of shrimp rice rolls dim sum. That's what we were craving too. I did feel like everything was so-so except the fried sticky rice. It was so damn good that my husband said we will come back just for this one dish. Two restrooms in the back - one's lock is broken. Otherwise, spacious and clean. The tables are crammed together so you would need to squeeze your way through. We ordered the 2 lobsters with noodle 48$ , lobster was fresh and delicious We loved the stir fried filet fish.. fresh and tasty! We used to be regular customers and enjoyed this restaurant. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was very disappointing, and we will not be returning. While some of the food was decent, we were particularly let down by the 蒜蓉粉丝蒸扇贝 (steamed scallops with garlic and vermicelli). We ordered two portions at $9.90 each. Unlike the menu photo and our previous experiences, the dish was not served in the scallop shells. Instead, it arrived more like a soup with vermicelli and seafood on top. The scallops themselves were wet, overly soft, and saggy, so we could barely finish the dish and left nearly half untouched. We politely shared our feedback with the waitress and explained our disappointment as longtime regulars. Rather than offering an apology or any resolution, she responded by saying we had "eaten so much already." When we clarified that we had mostly eaten the vermicelli but found the scallops unsatisfactory, she defended the dish by pointing out the "bigger" portion of noodles--which was not the key point of the dish --and made no effort to address the issue. We paid the full bill but chose not to leave a tip due to the poor food quality and service. (We have always tipped generously on previous visits.) The waitress then confronted us and yelled at us about not tipping, which only added to our disappointment. This experience with both the dish and the service has unfortunately decided us against returning. read more

Tipping culture is out of control. After an otherwise uneventful dinner here with my family, the server looked at our tip as we were leaving and asked why we tipped so little. Baffled but unfazed, we retorted whether there is a mandatory minimum percentage. The server confirmed there isn't, but audaciously repeated why we tipped so little. Eventually, we left without changing our tip, but the experience left a bitter taste that soured everything we just ate. Why is every establishment asking for an ever increasing percentage tip for doing the bare minimum these days? Plus, their "recommended" tip includes tax. Why am I tipping on the taxes paid to the government? A deceptive, but unfortunately prevalent practice. And as I'm fuming about this experience, I also want to note that this server had dropped a piece of our food as they were placing the dish on our table. And all they did to "compensate" was ask if we still want the dropped piece. What a clown. Needless to say, we're never coming back. And it's this sense of entitlement that's radicalizing me toward becoming a zero-tipper. read more

This place is great if you want some good Chinese food, big portions, and at a decent price. My family and I like coming here as we enjoy the bigger portions compared to other Chinese restaurants and it's still cheaper than those other restaurants. I am all for some salt & pepper pork chop and they give a lot of pork. There's enough for everyone to get a piece with a good chunk of meat. Their roast pork is delicious and it comes with a lot. We have had it in the past where we felt like it wasn't a good cut but we told the staff to make sure we get a good cut. And it was much better this time around. We always need a ride and noodle dish and our go to is the Fukien fried rice and the seafood crispy noodles. These were both great dishes, and again, were big portions. Some other dishes we ordered were the rice rolls with Chinese fried donut and the tofu and cod fillet. Both are great shareables for the table.
