The toppings on the rice are good. I can even smell the fragrance from the salted fish. They don't allow this salted fish with pork to be a combo (due to salted fish flavor) and it has to be ordered as a standalone claypot. Soy sauce is served on the side. We ordered two bowls of soup: - Watercress Stewed with dried Duck Gizzard 西洋菜炖陳腎 - Sea Coconut And Pear Stewed Wpork 海底椰雪梨炖瘦肉 Both soup are delicious. They're served piping hot and very flavorful. His go-to is the pork ribs in black bean sauce clay pot rice and my mom likes the preserved meat clay pot rice. For soups, we usually get the Sea Coconut & Pear Stewed with Pork and watercress stewed with dried duck gizzard. I usually like drinking the soups because I love Chinese clear soups and they taste really light. I rank this place a 3/5 because everything is pretty oily in my opinion even the soups. I always notice the layer of oil in the soups and then it's very obvious for the rice and noodles as well. The rice is somewhat understandable because it helps with crisping up the rice for the hard crunchy bits but the beef chow fun is so oily that it coats my lips. Like many other reviews, you have to watch out for the many tiny bones especially in the soups and in the rice pots. Overall, still decent food but wish it was less oily. Lies. You walk up after seeing pictures of claypot rice on their menu posted on the window and expect a claypot served, but no. It's in a paper takeout container. After ordering at the counter (this place is totally self serve), we take a seat and pour our own water. When our "claypots" arrived, we were startled to see it in the paper bowls. The guy explained they are prohibited from serving it in a claypot as it is a cooking instrument and cited FDA regulation. Not believing it was a federal regulation, I asked if it was a Milpitas regulation and he confirmed, but I still don't believe him. Considering that the Chinese restaurant in the Ranch 99 Plaza next door serves their entrees on sizzling iron platters and the Korean restaurant at McCarthy serves their Bibimbap in Dol Sot (that hot stone bowl), it is a lie. The bowl itself was decent, even though it lacks enough scorched rice that is softened by this format. It is a disappointing experience as a result and I will not revisit. I feel the decision to serve it this way and the self service is a finance decision, which is detrimental to customer experience resulting in lower sales leading right back to finance. I was told 15-20 minutes and arrived 20 minutes later. Paid in cash but they weren't ready yet so I wandered to check out the new to me drink places in the plaza before returning. I returned and boy were these babies heavy. The bowl looked small but they are indeed packed with rice, meat, and 2 pieces broccoli. The spare ribs were tender and I counted 10 pieces. I wasn't going to use all of the sauce but accidentally poured it all in before I noticed. It seemed not too salty but I also only was able to finish half before lunch was over. I usually order a soup and the Preserved Meat Clay Pot Rice bowl to go. I've tried a few soups now and they've all been really delicious and remind me of homemade soup I used to drink regularly growing up. I also genuinely love their preserved meat clay pot because it has delicious Chinese sausage and the rice ends up always being perfectly crispy on the edges. I always get the side of scrambled eggs and long beans on top of the bowl. It adds a little bit of extra volume to the rice bow and also complements the dish perfectly. Crunchy rice? Yes please! Unfortunately they are still only open for take out, no dine in yet. The Rice House serves up a variety of Bo Jai Fan also known as clay pot rice. For those who have never had it, yes the rice is supposed to be crispy or burnt on the bottom, it is purposely made this way. So yay! Finally a place near home that makes this dish well and even for take out the rice was crunchy on the bottom. Not too many places around the area even serve clay pot rice and the ones that do, don't really cook the rice long enough to make it crunchy. We tried 3 different toppings including the preserved meat (Chinese sausage and Chinese bacon), pork spare ribs, and special beef. All three were tasty and surprisingly the rice was cooked well even for take out. Most of the varieties cost $11.99 there's a few that cost $12.99 including the beef and duck. They only serve one size of the dish, but give a lot of meat on top. Untraditionally they serve all the pots with American broccoli instead of Chinese greens. Also only give 2 pieces of broccoli in each order. They serve the sauce in sealed packets on the side for to go. I think they're orders are meant to be single servings but one pot is enough to feed 2 people. They had a few other items on their menu but not a lot of other dishes. Maybe a few veggie side dishes or soup dishes. The service was a bit slow, we went in to order just a few minutes after 5:30 pm since they don't open for dinner until then. They close between 2:30 and 5:30. They also won't answer the phone until after 5:30. We were told it would be ready in 15-20 minutes. So we went to walk around outside for a bit and went back in 20 minutes later. Our order wasn't ready and actually took about 45 minutes to be completed. They did apologize for it taking so long, but shouldn't quote 20 minutes if it's going to take double the time. A lot of take out orders and delivery service orders were being picked up and my guess is they gave one of our items away to the delivery people since they were waiting and we were walking around outside. It would be nice if they opened a little earlier for dinner service as it seems they had a bunch of orders to fill right at opening. Being so busy, opening at 4:30 would be ideal. Many people were waiting to pick up orders that were probably all placed for the earliest pick up time available. I'd go back again but would probably order before 2:30 just because we usually like to eat dinner early. The food was yummy but expect to wait. Hopefully they open for dine in soon or change their hours to open a little earlier for dinner. Also a tip, if you order in the restaurant or phone in your order it's cash only, no credit cards. My friend and I had lunch here the other day. Both of us ordered the combo claypot rice (preserved meat with pork ribs). My friend had described this place as a "food court". You order your food at the cashier, pay and then pick a table to sit in. If you want water, that's self served. There's water dispensers and paper cups on each end of the store. When the food arrived, it was placed in take out containers. A tray, packets of soy sauce, disposable utensils, and a to-go bag were also given. After you're done eating, you clean your own table. This place is pretty dang authentic when it comes to Cantonese style clay pot rice bowls. The principle behind clay pot rice bowl is to cook the rice like you normally do, but to let it heat up enough to where you can add the meats on top to cook while the rice on the edge of the clay pot begins to get crispy brown. If it's your first time just go with the chicken and mushroom. My personal favorite is the chicken and preserved pork sausage. The pork ribs are good but you'll have to deal with small pieces of bone. Noticed this new eatery where years ago Bolanza occupied this store front. The offerings here are the traditional chinese clay pot rice which consists of various meat cooked in small individual serving clay pots. Being that we decided to dine in their nice spacious dining room, we ordered at the register and informed them that we would be eating in. I did notice that they had a table with napkins, paper water cups and a water dispenser. To our surprise, the worker brought over our order wrapped up in a plastic bag and the two rice dishes in a plastic container.
