Very disappointing experience. I ordered nasi lemak rendang, but it was packed together with the chicken rendang and other sides instead of being separated. Everything arrived mixed up and messy. Both were good! The char kuey teow is sweet, smokey, and a little bit of wok hei. It also includes cuttlefish and shrimp too for those who have seafood allergies! Chinese sausages were a nice touch too. The egg scramble chow fun has a sauce that's runny but well seasoned (a good amount of pepper). Malaysian food is some of my wife's favorite cuisines, and in our experience we've been underwhelmed about a lot of the places in the Bay Area, but Mari Mari was a pretty good experience. We met up a friend at Mari Mari which is a complex in Milpitas. We went on a Wednesday night and the restaurant seemed pretty packed, but we were still able to get seated right away. We ordered some of our favorite Malaysian dishes: Roti Canai, Kyow Teow and Belacan Kangkung. All were pretty good. I also ordered their coffee ribs, which were pretty flavorful and was not bitter, they probably didn't put that much coffee in it. The nasi lemak was super fun to eat with all its different pieces that complemented nicely. This is a great spot if you're craving Malaysian food--the menu is decently expansive, with many classic.dishes you would expect of a Malaysian restaurant. Note, there is only one piece of napkin per person at the table, so if you need more, you will need to ask. Very solid Malaysian food! I can see why this place is packed because both the service and the food was top notch. The space is a bit small and relatively harder to accommodate for larger groups but they were still able to seat our group of 6 just fine. We got a plethora of dishes and our favorites included the coffee ribs, roti, and the bak kut teh. Coffee ribs- You can definitely taste the coffee flavors in here. There is a slight bitter flavor to it from the coffee but it is immediately balanced out with the sweet sauce. The bitter taste fades away almost instantly and actually works quite well overall. The meat is not tough at all and overall I'd get this dish again. Roti- This was my mom's favorite dish. Bursting with flavor from the curry sauce, the roti was nice and chewy, yet soft enough and almost flaky to a point. The chicken and beef in the fried rice were done really well. Loaded with meat but the meat was so tender. Even the shrimp was plump and flavorful. The char teow looked burnt when it came out and we were about to say something but it was actually just the coloring from the sauce. And it ended up being one of the family's favorite of the night. "Mari mari" in Malaysian translates to "come,come" .. essentially it is a warm invitation. When you dine here, it feels like you are being invited into someone's house for some comforting home cooking. This spot just opened up a couple of months ago however, it seems like half of San Jose just found out because this place is POPPIN. We came on a Saturday at 5:20 pm not at all expecting a wait since it was early. When we arrived, it was a completely full house. We waited no more than 3 minutes and were seated by the windows. The menu offers a huge selection including a lot of Malaysian favorites like rendang chicken, hokkien mee, and chicken satay. The menu can be quite overwhelming so take your time and bring more people so you have the opportunity to try more dishes! The interior is clean and well spaced out. There is a good amount of large tables that can be assembled together to accommodate larger parties. * Curry mee- we ordered this dish with the two types of noodles: egg and rice noodles. I found the egg noodles to be more preferred in this soup because of the chewy texture and delicious eggy flavor of the noodles. The soup was slightly spicy with a coconut base. The toppings included eggplant, okra, tofu, potato, and chicken. The chicken was super tender and soft. If i were to order this again, I would ask for just the egg noodles. * Roti canai- the roti was a popular item among the tables in the restaurant. However I felt the roti itself was dense and lacking in that airy light texture. It was on the tougher side and didn't really show the flakiness roti is typically known for. I would skip it next time. * belacan kangkung- don't forget to eat your veggies! The dish itself is cooked perfectly with the strong briny flavors of the shrimp paste. If you aren't a fan of shrimp, I suggest ordering something else. For me, this is a staple dish. * char kuey teow- Honestly, this was my favorite CKT in the States that I've found so far. The noodles are soo chewy and soft with a strong wok hei essence. The flavors are great and can be enhanced with a little bit of sambal. What stands out about Mari Mari is the kind, lightning fast service we received. The server was incredibly personable and friendly. I kid you not, the food came out piping hot within just a few minutes after ordering. The portion sizes are large and great for sharing among a group of people. We came here and it was pretty busy, so I was glad my friend was able to put our name on the waitlist. We ended up waiting about 40 minutes before getting seated. We ordered the Hokkien mee, stir-fried kangkung with garlic, chicken rendang with a side of rice, and roti canai. The roti canai was definitely the highlight, it was so good and paired perfectly with the dipping sauce. The kangkung was also really tasty. My girls actually enjoyed the Hokkien mee, although they did mention that it was a little too saucy for their liking. Unfortunately, the chicken rendang was very underwhelming. It lacked the flavor I was hoping for, and I ended up pouring some of the roti canai dipping sauce over it just to give it a little more flavor, which actually helped. Overall, the food was just okay. This is still a fairly new spot and has only been open for about four months, so hopefully they continue to improve and find their footing. Decided to come on a whim on Friday evening. The restaurant is located on the first floor in the same plaza as Koi Palace, which is the plaza next to the big Ranch 99 plaza. There's lots of parking but on Friday evening, most of the spots were taken and you had to go way back. There happened to be one table for two left when we got there around 6:00pm, so we got seated immediately. I did see a line form outside the restaurant while I was inside. The restaurant itself is quite small but it seems they allow bigger groups as well, as there was a table of 8 people dining at the same time. The menu has your typical Malaysian cuisine, like nasi lemak, char kuey teow and hainanese chicken rice. We ordered the roti canai, prawn noodles and kari pearl noodles with chicken. The roti canai was fresh and crispy, although personally I thought it was a bit thin at parts. It comes with some curry to dip in, which was tasty but quite mild. The prawn noodle soup was very flavorful, but also mild in its spiciness, which is not what you'd expect from the bright red soup. I appreciated the fact they added both vermicelli and egg noodles (the best way to eat it in my opinion). The kari pearl noodle soup was flavorful and had a lot of toppings, like fried tofu puffs, beansprouts, green beans, eggplant, potato and okra. It felt more like vegetable and chicken curry that they made soupier and added the noodles to. Personally, I prefer a simpler dish (chicken, beansprouts, tofu puffs), but this is still a good dish, although I do think it could be spicier! We compared to our where we frequent for Malaysian food, Ipoh Garden in Milbrae. Overall Ipoh nails the taste more but this is still a solid newcomer. Finally another Malaysian restaurant, and one of the very few that serves Kuala Lumpur style Hookien Noodles! This restaurant replaces the Szechuan rice noodle place before and has around 5-6 tables. We waiting a bit before getting seated (around 5 min ish). The place is freshly renovated so it's clean. Service was timely and the food arrives fairly quickly despite being full. The Hokkien Noodles were quite authentic, the Char Kuey Teow tastes great, and the curry laksa noodles is creamy and tasty with plenty of curry chicken. If I'm being a bit picky, the stir friend noodles could use a bit more char/heat (wok hay in Cantonese). Except for he curry laksa noodles, food portion appeared to be not very consistent (our noodles had smaller portion than other tables).
