Came here for the first time on a Friday for lunch and was seated right away with no wait! It was our first time here, so we asked the staff for their recommendations and ordered the following: ~food~ - Roti Canai $7.50: I loved the one! The Roti was crisp, but still had a nice chew to it and was not too oily! Portion size was ok, I think just enough for 2 ppl to share as an appetizer! - Sarang Seafood $27.50: Interesting dish for sure! It was fried taro paste in a bowl form with a seafood stir fry inside! In my opinion, I think it was just ok! A little overpriced for the amount of actual seafood in the dish (there were about 4 pieces of shrimp, small pieces of scallops and squid). I think the dish could've used a bit more flavor and maybe better quality seafood? Overall ok! ~overall~ Service was great, very quick and the staff were very friendly! Lot of seating indoors, so would a good spot for larger groups too! Plenty of parking in the plaza as well! Overall, pretty good, I may come back to try some of their other dishes since their menu seems quite big!

The ambiance inside was dim and I found the decor to be a bit strange; I felt like I was dining at someone's grandmas house. Service was good, the staff were eager to take our order and were helpful and polite. They also checked on us regularly without being intrusive. #MalasyanEats: ~ 10. Spicy Crispy Calamari Strips - 3.5/5 Your standard Fried Calamari. I thought the Calamari could be fired a bit longer for a better crisp. ~ 115. Mee Goreng Fried Noodle - 4/5 We opted to try something different. Indian style stir fried noodles with shrimp, tomato, bean sprouts, egg, vegetables and ground peanuts in some sort of sauce. Tasty without being overly spicy. DESSERT: ~ 170. Ice Kacang - 4/5 Ummm...this thing was much bigger than we anticipated. Not as fine as Snow or Hawaiian Shaved Ice, but very tasty. Shaved ice with red bean, sweet corn, plum seeds, jelly served with red rose syrup, and condensed milk. Not too sweet either. I did find it strange that they started putting up chairs on the tables cleaning up around 7:45 on a Sunday evening when they close at 8:30. Almost like they were giving customers a hint to leave... that was weird! I'd come back and try other items on the menu.

Was in search of malaysian food and came upon this place. Very packed when we went around 1pm on a sunday. Sadly they did not have the chicken and rice dish which is what we came here for. The roti was a bit too thin and flaky for my liking and wish there was a thicker curry sauce. Nasi Lemak lacked in flavor and was just mild in all tastes. Chow kueh tow was almost like pad thai and was salty.
Pleasant surprises around every corner at Layang Layang! Walking in the first time you won't know what to think but don't worry, never had a bad dish here. The ambiance isn't anything spectacular but the service is always quick and friendly. I don't know where the recipes come from but they feel passed down through generations. Every item is a story in taste. Love Layang Layang
my in laws introduced me to this Malaysian spot, and wow their food is amazing. As someone who loves eating chinese, thai and indian food. Im shocked that I never tried Malaysian. They basically offer similar features and ways of other cuisines, so when trying their food, it felt very comforting and delicious. My favorite right now is their coffee ribs, and their migoren noodles, but all of their dishes are amazing!
After we landed in San jose, we tried this Malaysian restaurant because we were in the mood for hainamese chicken rice. Parking: plenty free shared retail parking Reservation: just walk in. Big space for small and big group. Restrooms: singles women and men restroom. Once we were seated, we ordered: Nasi lemak Char thaw we Roti canai Kangkung blachan Overall food is ok. Roti Canada is too crispy and thin, the curry sauce just plain sauce no potato. The coconut rice on nasi lemak could be use more coconut milk. Beef is great, juicy and tender. Chaw thaw we could use more eggs and better yet, flat wide noddle instead thin thai style noddle. Service is fast and nice.
Came here on a busy Friday night around 7pm, and Layang-Layang was hopping! Despite the crowd, the service was impressively attentive and efficient. We were really pleased with how quickly our food arrived--all dishes were on our table in under 15 minutes! Our water glasses were also consistently refilled, which is always a plus. Since we weren't super hungry, we shared the Char Kway Teow and the Kangkung Belacan. The Char Kway Teow was delicious, with a good depth of flavor and sizable shrimp. The Kangkung Belacan was also satisfying; the kangkung leaves were tender, and the belacan (shrimp paste) was well-balanced and not overpowering.
Love this place with a tropical vibe, excellent attentive service, and fantastic Malaysian food!! I always have a hard time ordering because the menu is so long and has so many good options, with vegetarian options are plenty and while marked. We started with tofu satay-- crispy tofu, stuffed with cabbage and smothered in a amazing peanut sauce-- yummm!!! I ordered the sizzling princess tofu-- it arrived at the table, not sure if me or the dish was bubbling more with delight! The tofu in this dish is eggy and flavorful-- I know I can't recreate this at home so it is special. My husband enjoyed his noodles-- and we even enjoyed the leftovers a day later! Plenty of plaza parking. Good for groups. No outdoor seating. We did not have to wait at 8pm on a Saturday night.

The Char Kwai Tiew was very good with a good "wok hei" though a little small for the price ($19.50). That said, eating out these days is expensive everywhere with inflation. The roti was good. They have an extensive menu and I'd like to come back and try their Princess tofu and which is made in house and some of their other dishes. Service was friendly and efficient.
this was a pretty underwhelming experience. ordered the hainan chicken but it was pretty flavorless. usually i like the rice to have more flavor. sauce options weren't that good. i have had much better hainan chicken. also my chicken was sooooo boney. every bite i had to rip my chicken apart and spit out the bone. pretty disappointing. typically you would want a more meaty chicken for this type of dish.
This was the first time I dined at Layang Layang and had a wonderful experience. The staff were so incredibly nice and checked up on us frequently. The menu is a bit daunting but I loved everything we got. The seafood chow fung, fried fish, calamari, and roti. The fried items were perfectly crispy. I brought home the leftovers for my husband to try, and although soggy, he said the flavors were great. I'm super excited to come back and try other items!
I've been here twice. I'd give 3.5 stars. Service here is really nice and food comes out fast but the dishes are either super hit or super miss. It's never crowded when I've gone and there's a lot of space to sit. I got the roti canai which was really good - not too oily and curry was spicy. I actually think this was so good it could bring my review up to a 4. Must try. I also got the princess tofu (veg). This is house made egg tofu and I love egg tofu and the crispiness was done really well but I didn't like the sauce that it came with at all. I ended up just eating the tofu and not the curry/sauce. Also even at spicy the flavor was kinda off and not spicy. I've also tried the pad thai - this was fine it tasted good 4/5. I got the malaysian iced tea - it's mainly sweetened black tea with milk.. it was strong but overall just tasted like black tea, I would skip. I do like how extensive the menu is. so I would consider coming back here to try other things but unsure if I would go out of my way
It was awesome We went there with a bunch of us and we tried a lots of things and they were all fresh and delicious. Beff was super tensor and we love the authentic aroma of the dishes. Entrees were of good portion and it was very reasonably priced read more

Malaysian food always hits the spot, and this place does it right. A large location (looks bigger on the inside than the outside), this is a good place for large group gatherings and smaller catchups alike. We came here as a group of four on a Saturday afternoon before a movie screening and every dish was pretty good, the standout being the bird's nest (nest is edible), fried tofu, and noodles. Next time I want to check out some of the desserts as well, but unfortunately we were too full to even fathom another bite. A good problem to have! Service is friendly and parking is abundant. This is located in a very popular strip mall with a ton of options, but I would recommend coming here for a taste of authentic Malaysian cuisine. read more

We came here on a Thursday and were seated immediately. The servers were all super attentive and friendly! This was my first time eating Malaysian food and it was yummy. My favorite two things that we ordered were the roti and the chicken/potato curry. FYI the chicken is drumsticks! read more
Finally tried this little gem in Milpitas! I had heard good things about this place before, so I was really looking forward to checking it out. The service was very attentive and friendly. Food was yum! The noodles were seasoned well and the tom yum chicken was flavorful. However the tom yum taste does get a bit overwhelming after eating a lot, so I think it's definitely meant to be more of a sharing dish. The pearl mee was well made but the noodles caught me off guard! Next time I would probably order the chow kuey teow instead because Im a big fan of rice noodles Service was really good! They were super attentive and really nice. I was surprised by how attentive they were and their quickness with everything. Besides the delicious food, I would come back to eat just because the service is great. Store ambiance is like a casual restaurant. Very homey and feels like a mom and pop shop. We went to lunch with a group of friends, so it was nice to order some familiar dishes, as well as, new dishes. One friend had been here many times, so he recommended a couple of his favorites like, which was new to me. The new dishes were... Mee Goreng Fried Noodle: Indian style stir fried yellow noodle in special mild sauce with shrimp, tomato, bean sprouts, egg, vegetables and ground peanuts (4/5). Flavorful because of the curry and soy sauce. Sizzling Beef: Stir-fried sliced beef with green pepper, onion in black pepper sauce served on sizzling plate (4/5). The beef was tender and the black pepper sauce was done well. It goes well on steamed rice. String Beans, Eggplant, and Okra in garlic sauce (4/5). This combination of vegetables was delicious and simple yet tasty. Not too oily. Malaysian Fried Rice: Malaysian style fried rice with shrimp, chicken, egg, basil, and vegetables (4/5). Full of flavor with a nice smoky taste. We ordered a couple of our favorites like... 2 orders of Roti Canai: Homemade Indian style pancake with curry dipping sauce (4/5). Sarang Seafood: Fried taro nest topped with shrimp, squid, scallop, corn, snow peas, black mushroom, and cashew nuts (4/5). Good as usual. This is one of their signature dishes. Malaysian Ice Coffee (4/5). Subtle, and creamy. The service was very good. They, all were friendly and attentive! A good sized restaurant but only two restrooms for the entire place. Plenty of parking available as they are located in a fairly large plaza. read more
I've never had Malaysian food before, so I was excited to finally take a visit. Service and ambiance were good, they were polite and checked in on us. They gave us recommends such as the seafood sarang and coffee ribs. The roti canai with the curry sauce was delishhhh. I loved it! Deep curry and coconut flavor. The laksa was also pretty good, warm and hearty. The coffee spare ribs were okay, I didn't enjoy the flavor and there were bone shards throughout. The seafood sarang was visually very appealing. The flavors were good. The down sides were that it was warm, maybe even lukewarm. If the taro base was freshly fried and the seafood sauce was more abundant, I could've given it a 5/5. But it was very luke warm and a bit stale. The food all came out relatively fast, so that could've been a sign that most of it was precooked. I would go back if the food was heated properly. read more
I was trying to go to super potato next door but it was closed for the holidays! So we decided to try out Layang Layang next door- which was a great decision! The food was flavorful and the service was great! My water glass was never empty! It felt like a family owned place that had some regulars which is a great sign! Once we ordered the food came out pretty fast. I tried the Malaysian ice tea- kind of tasted like a milk tea and not too sweet which I liked. Our roti came out first which was super light and airy and crunchy. Dipping it in the curry sauce was so good! I wish we ordered more but we had three more dishes coming haha. Then the prawn mee noodles came out- loved the broth it had a nice kick (spicy) and tasted delicious! Next came the chow kueh teow kind of like a skinny chow fun noodle fried in a wok with plenty of bean sprouts for texture. Our final dish was the sizzling lamb the meat was very tender and had lots of black pepper flavor! Every dish we had was great! I would definitely recommend! read more
Roti 5/5 - this was my favorite thing here. Taste is very consistent compared to other places. The curry sauce is very good and flavorful. It's more on the thin side but taste is good. But the only con is how expensive it is! $10 for a small piece of roti Chicken satay 5/5 - this was also very good. Chicken wasn't dry. Sauce that it comes with gives it a nice flavor. Bird nest looking dish 3/5 - this wasn't that good. I was curious about this dish because the reviews say this is good but I thought it was alright. Nothing special about it. read more
one of the spots that my family loves to go to if we are feeling tired of the other food that we get. it is a lil on the pricier side but I do think it's so worth it. my grandma who's from indonesia even said it's pretty accurate and the food is all so so good. the service was good too. nothing really to bash and it was kinda quiet but nonetheless we felt welcome def coming back!! read more

My BFF and I went here and shared Roti, Kang Kung, and chow kuay teow noodles. The roti was ok, I wish the curry was warmer (it was cold). The Kang Kung was good, but you have to like shrimp paste. The belacan flavor has a very strong shrimp paste taste. I loved the noodles, it had a lot of "wok hay" as Chinese people would say. I plan on coming back with my family. read more

Overall, a decent spot to grab Malaysian food. There is a HUGE menu, so there's definitely something for anyone. Lots of seating inside and it's a cozy family restaurant. I got the Chow Kueh Teow, which tastes quite similar to a Chinese chow fun. But once I added the chili sauce given, it had a lot more flavor! A little spicy... Noodles were great. The squid was cooked perfectly. The shrimp could have been a little better... they were slightly cold(?), but I would order this again! Not bad. read more
Had a very good time at Layang Layang. Firstly, the service was awesome. The staff was friendly and the food came very promptly. It was hot and fresh. Now, this was our first time there and also with Malaysian food. We ordered a sarang Mango chicken, which turned out to be our favorite. We also had the Assam Noodle Soup. The waiter advised us to try another one like it which tasted less fishy but we didn't listen to him. We should have because this one was a little strong for us. Last one which turned out to be our least favorite was Number 91. It seemed that the vegetable was still uncooked or not very fresh to begin with. It was too chewy for our liking. Both the drinks were awesome. We will return to try more dishes. read more
Layang Layang used to be super popular with multiple branches but now the Milpitas one is the only one left. Compared to many other Malaysian/Singaporean restaurants here in the Bay Area this is definitely one of the upper echelon. The Hainan chicken is really good but it's super super annoying that they constantly run out so if you want to eat it you may have to call ahead to make sure they reserve it for you. The Roti Canai is also tasty and freshly made. I like that you get a completely different flavor as you devour it because it goes from chewy to crispy as it cools. Coffee ribs is not as good as another place I've had but decent. The seafood in a nest is so so. Sizzling beef is tender. What I think they should improve on is Singaporean chili prawns which is too sweet and not as good as I've had in Singapore. I wish they have chili crab or black pepper crab but I guess the lack of the Sri Lanka Crab may be why. They made Chow kway Teow non spicy which took away the soul of the dish. I wish they didn't. I do like the pearl mee (mouse tail noodle too) Once again I wish they would offer more Hainan chicken especially letting you choose leg or wing portion. They Chicken Rice needs improvement as it's not aromatic or flavorful. Service is good as they have more waiters than most Asian places so you can get someone to help you with things but the place itself is just a space with some Southeastern decoration. The following is from my review before: I used to come here often before the pandemic and also when it used to also have another location in Cupertino so I'm glad I get to try it again. The food is still good and if you miss Malaysian/Singaporean food this is probably the most authentic and down to earth restaurant to have it. I love the thin roti, the hainan chicken, and chow kueh teow (pan fried noodle). In fact almost all the fried noodles are good especially the mouse tail noodles . read more
After a visit to Malaysia last fall, I've learned to truly appreciate Malaysian food, and it was great to find a malaysian restaurant here. The tastes of the food are overall authentic, as much as they can be in the west. I had the nasi lemak and my friend had the char kway teow. The nasi lemak tasted good, and its core flavours are there. Obviously it cannot compare to the best in Kuala Lumpur, but this one is not a bad substitute. You can tell that the owner of this restaurant has a good knowledge of malaysian cooking style from the way our dishes were prepared. Overall, this was a staisfying meal for a reasonable price! read more

I took my mom here for an early Mother's Day. She's from Malaysia and she likes this place. The only other Malaysian restaurant she went to was Banana Leaf and of course that place isn't that good. * Chicken Satay - $15.50 for 5 pieces of skewers with a side of peanut sauce and diced cucumber and onion. I felt it was delicious but she said it wasn't that great. I felt she was critical of the sauce and felt it wasn't that much better than peanut butter. * Spicy Crispy Calamari Strips - $17.50 - came with sautéed red and green peppers. That sauce had a great kick! My mom loved this! * Mee Siam - $17.50 - My mom said this wasn't authentic and not even close to Mee Siam. See my picture. * Nami Lemak - $18.50 - On point! She loved this. * Princess Tofu - $21.50 came with 6 pieces of fried silky tofu and some baby corn, carrot, mushrooms, shrimp, and calamari. I thought this was a little bit pricey for what it was compared to Chinese Braised Tofu with seafood and mushrooms. My mom liked this. read more

Ordered the Princess Tofu, Large tomyum soup, Hokkien mi, Thai chicken, Malaysian fried rice, and Ying Yong noodle, crispy calamari. This is my family's usual go-to order for a party of 6, we usually finish everything and leave with little to-go boxes. Today was an exception though, everything was just so salty, especially the hokkien mi. We were quite disappointed, we ordered side bowls of steamed white rice to help balance out the saltiness. Love Layang Layang. Their food is always so tasty. Just have to be aware that it leans towards the spicy side so go for mild or not spicy if you are like me. Haha Service is always good and they are very attentive so you don't have to worry about anything Place is located in a busy place so parking, even though it's abundant, might be scarce during busy times. read more

This is my goto spot for Malaysian food because they have so many dishes to choose from, service is quick, and the food just hits the spot. If you come here you have to order the roti because that's a classic dish! I also really like their noodle dishes. So far I've tried the Chow Kueh Teow Fried Noodle, which is kind of similar to a pad see ew, and the Mee Goreng Fried Noodle. Both were delicious! I'd say the Mee Goreng noodles are more firm and have a bouncier texture compared to the Chow Kueh Teow noodles which were torn into small pieces during the cooking process. We also ordered their beef rendeng which I really liked because the texture of the beef was so soft (kinda like shredded beef). For veggies, I would recommend their Kangkung (ong choi) which was flavorful and had a light crunch to it. The mango salad was very tangy due to the sauce and it also had a bit of a kick to it. They are closed for good. The owner told us they are retiring and wants to travel.
