After a visit to Malaysia last fall, I've learned to truly appreciate Malaysian food, and it was great to find a malaysian restaurant here. The tastes of the food are overall authentic, as much as they can be in the west. I had the nasi lemak and my friend had the char kway teow. The nasi lemak tasted good, and its core flavours are there. Obviously it cannot compare to the best in Kuala Lumpur, but this one is not a bad substitute. You can tell that the owner of this restaurant has a good knowledge of malaysian cooking style from the way our dishes were prepared. Tom Yam Chicken - The flavor is of tom yum, but it's a little too sweet and sour for my taste. The chicken and vegetables are cooked really well. Definitely get a spare rice with this one. This is my family's usual go-to order for a party of 6, we usually finish everything and leave with little to-go boxes. Came here on a Sunday around 7pm. The restaurant was packed (good sign cause it usually means people love it here!) but we were seated within 10-15 minutes. There was a group of 10-15 people and they were accommodating to the size of the party, so it's a good place for larger parties. I also saw that they accommodated people requiring space for a wheelchair. The staff were very nice and were very attentive. The hainanese chicken didn't even taste like hainanese chicken. The rice we ordered to eat with the chicken also just tasted like regular rice that's yellow, and not the typical flavor that comes with hainanese chicken. The spareribs were also tough to eat. I've had Layang Layang, growing up in the Bay Area and I really missed the Cupertino location, but luckily there is still Malaysian food in the Milpitas are. For positives, the food is really good and authentic. My favorite apps are the Roti Canai and the Satay Chicken. The roti was crispy and soft with an amazing sauce that is my childhood fave. The Satay Chicken is really juicy and fresh with the crunchy cucumber side and peanut sauce. My friends and I also shared the 23. Sarang Seafood which had a great presentation: seafood on top of a fried taro cake. We also had the 98. Malaysian Fried Rice and my favorite vegetables: the 67. KangKung Belacon. The entree I liked the most was the veggies because it's served in a shrimp paste sauce and is so good simply with rice. For a family meal, I think sharing a seafood either noodle or rice and getting the KangKung veggies is a great choice. Service was fast and respectful, and the atmosphere was spacious and relaxing. I think my one sad qualm is how pricey the Bay Area has gotten and I guess somewhat understandable.. but I was a bit shocked on how much the prices have raised, esp for the veggies dish. Rather, it has to do with the boss lady's LACK OF ATTENTIVENESS TO ALLERGIC CONCERNS! *** One of my friends had been wanting to take us to try some Malaysian restaurants in the Bay. I love trying new food places and also supporting local businesses. We ordered the the following: 1 ) $6.25 Roti Canai 2 ) $13.50 Satay Chicken 3 ) $15.50 Egg Chow Fun 4 ) $14.50 Hokkien Mee 5 ) $11.50 Ice Kacang (A.B.C.) We ordered items 1 to 4 first with waiter #1 and told him that someone in our group had a peanut allergy to make sure that none of the food contained peanuts so that our friend can eat it safely. The Satay Chicken description said it had a peanut sauce, but we made sure that it comes on the side and that the actual food item would not have peanuts in it. After finishing our food, we wanted some desserts and saw a picture of a shaved ice called "Ice Kacang (A.B.C)" with the description "Shaved ice with red bean, sweet corn, plum seeds, jelly served with red rose syrup and condensed milk." We ordered that with waiter #2 thinking that it would not contain peanuts. The shaved ice came and it looked very appetizing. All the toppings were buried under the shaved ice and it looked exactly like the picture we saw earlier. We started digging in and enjoying the dessert. It was then the friend that is allergic to peanuts spit out a piece of peanut not sure why it was in the shaved ice. We called one of the waiters over and asked if it contained peanuts and he said yes. We were VERY CONCERNED because it was never in the English description that it contained peanuts and it is a very common allergy. We were not aware that "Kacang" actually means peanuts, but people who are not familiar with the language should NOT be expected to search up every single thing and their meaning considering how common this allergy is. The waiter wasn't sure what to do so he said he will let the boss lady know. The boss lady came over and rather than apologizing to us, she BLAMED us for not clarifying that our group had a food allergy. We told her calmly that we did clarify it with one of the waiters in the beginning when we were ordering the first 4 items. Then, she proceeded to say that but they had multiple waiters and blamed it on the waiter. We told her that she should have clearly stated this nut allergy in her menu in the description, because someone could've actually died from this if they have a severe peanut allergy. Thankfully, our friend who is allergic noticed the peanut before actually eating and swallowing it or else this entire thing could've gone really wrong. What made us the most unsatisfied was the boss lady's INABILITY TO ADMIT TO FAULT AND APOLOGIZE SINCERELY for almost accidentally sending our friend to the urgent care. She had that attitude that was like "ok so what do you want me to do now? remake your dessert?" We asked if they had other desserts so that our friend could enjoy it safely and one of the waiter later came back with a different dessert that was on the house. Since nothing bad actually happened, I think apologizing and admitting that it was their fault for not clearly stating the word "PEANUT" in the description would suffice and was the least the boss lady could do. I really hope they would be clearer in their description and be more careful with food allergies so other customers would not be at risk of accidentally eating something they're not supposed to eat. read more

Parking is a plus and the restaurant never seems to be crowded, which I'm ok with since there's no wait time. My go to dishes are: Singapore chili prawn, seafood tom yam soup, Princess tofu, calamari, coconut rice and the crispy fish (I eat this with the Singapore chili prawn sauce and it's so good).
