Egg yolk in the center of the lion head meatballs
    Annie T.

The menu is huge! Talk about authentic Shanghainese cuisine! The service was quick, and we got our dishes right away. We were in and out for lunch in an hour. My favorite was this fish dish, which is easy to overcook, but they didn't! It was tender, flaky, and flavorful. The lionhead meatballs tasted great over rice. The only reason I docked one star is because the prices were a little high for a "dive-y" place (ie, menu specials printed and taped on the walls, disorganization, not super clean), but the food was delicious so I'm not complaining. My friend and I were fighting over who should bring home the leftovers!

Ordered Sauteed Prawns, Filet Fish in Wine Sauce, Crabmeat Ball, Preserved Vegetable with Bean Curd Sheet, Bean Curd with Vegetables, Happy Family Clay Pot, Seafood and Tofu Pot, and Soup Dumplings. All the food was good, but my favorites were the clay pots, bean curd with vegetables, and vegetables with bean curd sheet. The service was quick and attentive. And the ambiance was casual.

The environment and service were decent. I ordered three dishes, and the disappointing one was a cold appetizer--Shanghai smoked fish. The fish was over-fried, making the meat too hard, leaving nothing enjoyable to eat. My favorite was the Sauteed Shelled Prawns; the shrimp were unexpectedly tender and delicious, resembling the texture I had in Shanghai. As for the Yangzhou-style bean curd and dry shrimp, it was just so-so. Essentially, it was dried tofu strips, shrimp, and vegetables cooked together in a broth.

Shanghai Delight is a small, modest restaurant located in a strip mall shopping center. My family and I arrived at around 11:30am on Saturday, which is right before the lunch rush. Thus, we were seated right away. However, it was pretty packed by the time we left. My family got a few items to share including the Shanghai style noodle soup, Shanghai style pork fried rice, fish fillet, and pork belly. Overall, the dishes that we ordered were simple, but done well. It felt homey and I wouldn't mind getting any of these dishes again. Of course, next time, I'll have to try some additional specialty items because the tables next to us had me craving more!

Meat balls with egg yolk inside, chicken dish, and tofu puffs with squash and pork.

I liked the meat ball with egg yolk stuffing, that dish was delicious. The chicken reminded me of orange chicken, was ok for me. The tofu puff was delicious, but the pork that came with it was a bit too salty for me, other than that, the dish was good as I really liked the squash that came with it.

Second time here in less than a month. Ate the fish with wine sauce and braised cloud's ear and sautéed eggplant. Easy ordering system by QR code on the table or placing the order in Chinese with a waitress. Food comes piping hot to the table. Appreciate their good service and great food. Look forward to our next meal here!

Great food, would come back to try more dishes! *** A M B I A N C E *** Very homestyle restaurant vibe. There isn't anything special about the interior. The chopsticks looked a bit worn out, so we asked for disposable ones. The ceramic plates and bowls looked okay, but I noticed that some tea cups were slightly chipped. *** F O O D *** Bean Curd with Vegetables YangZhou Style Bean Curd and Dry Shrimp Grouper in Sweet and Sour Sauce Dried Stir Fried Lamb with Cumin I liked all four of the items we ordered. What you see on the menu is what you get. I specially really enjoyed the Grouper in Sweet and Sour Sauce. The presentation of the item didn't look amazing but the taste was absolutely 10/10. The Dried Stir Fried Lamb with Cumin was also very flavorful and paired well with rice! *** S E R V I C E *** The food came out pretty fast. If you have leftovers, they would pack it for you.

Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Ambiance 3/5 Solid 4 Stars! Food was so yummy. Ordered Dry stir fried lamb with cumin and I believe Home style sautéed pork with vegetables. And side of rice. Delicious lamb dish. Enough food that we had it for dinner as well. Service was fast! This is far from my house but I will drive for their delicious food! Can't wait to try other dishes that I've marked on their menu.

Mapo tofu Cabbage with mushrooms Soup

This is one of the perfect 3.5 places, iykyk. My coworker and I are trying ever place in the plaza as there's so many we haven't tried. Starting from the left Shanghai was first. The best recommendation I can give to a place is that I want to take my mom there. They definitely get that stamp. I'm a little disappointed we didn't bring more people as there's so many items we can't wait to try. Since it was our first time we went simple. With beef wrapped in bean curd, mapo tofu, and cabbage with mushrooms. The blend of these items was incredible. There are so many options on the menu and we can't wait to try them all. Service is what you would expect in a place like this and I wouldn't want it to change. Everything is clean inside, but not much space. I'm giving it a 4 star to not throw off the metics but if you read this you know they hit it out of the park.

    Sweet and sour spare ribs
    Kevin T.

Delightful discovery of their affordable Shanhainese dishes, but also strangely some stuff with a good amount of heat too. Almost like it were masquerading as a Sichuan place as well! Either way hit this homey mom & pop joint if you want to good quality authentic Chinese eats. Being situated in Milpitas square helps the parking situation as it's generally easy to find something regardless of the time. Although seating is only indoors, it was generally pretty spacious and staff were quite friendly in our brief interactions. The menu is pretty large (large enough it'd be prohibitive to post all the pages), but helpfully has lots of big photos of their dishes to give you an idea of their offerings. They also have some nice takeout combo deals posted around the place (mom & pop right?). My group opted to get a nice spread of their offerings, some sweet, some spicy, just to get a sense of their strengths and generally I was pretty happy with all of them. It's not top of the line in every regard, but cozy and well done with no major shortfalls. ==Chongqing Fried chicken [4.5/5]== Actually spicier than the last place I went to for lazijiding that was focused on spicy foods! Well balanced on the use of peppers and mala and quite flavorful. The veggies could've been stirfried a smidge longer to get rid of all the rawness from the onions, but generally a fan of this take. ==Sweet & sour ribs [5/5]== Pretty good rendition. Couple smokey bits, but very fragrantly crispy (stayed that way for a while too) and lovingly coated with a clingy sweet and sour sauce. Sauce was also well balanced and complimented the fried ribs. Was quite a fan of these. ==Mapo tofu [4/5]== Spicier on the capsacin/pepper front than mala, but pretty tasty rendition of the classic dish. Tofu was nice and fresh, though the sauce could've used a bit more oomph in my opinion. Perhaps for the better there wasn't too many super salty dishes on the table though, so as a whole I didn't think too much of it. ==Shanghai style fried rice cakes [5/5]== Solid rendition; veggies were fresh and the chicken was nicely moist/bouncy. Rice cakes were all tender and chewy in the right ways and seasoning wasn't too heavy either.

    Erica W.

Cai fan is consistently good (still too much salt); however, some terrible dishes ordered to the point where I don't want to order anything else. In general, they use too much salt on their dishes here. The yuxiang eggplant was covered in a disgusting sauce... had to throw it away. Portions for takeaway can be sparse.

Star of the show, the sweet & sour pork spareribs.
    Tom S.

Sweet & sour pork spareribs are solid, and probably the star of the show here. We ordered their sweet & sour pork spareribs, pea shoots, Shanghai chow mein, and the XLB. Sweet & sour pork spareribs: Again, solid. Get this if you're craving it. Good color, doused in the sauce, excellent overall. Pea shoots: One of my favorite veggie dishes to order in Chinese cuisine. Compliments the S&SPS above. Garlic taste, clear sauce. Very good. Shanghai chow mein: Chewier and thicker than more commonly eaten chow mein in American-Chinese cuisine. Another one of my favorites. XLB: In attempt to use a phrase very common among zoomers, this was very "mid". While it certainly looks the part, it lacked any punchy flavor in the broth. I've been looking for my next XLB place ever since my favorite place closed down several years ago. I'm still trying to find that next best place. They also have killer lunch specials, I'm coming back for that next time.

Shanghai-style Meatballs with salted egg yolk inside
    Flora Z.

I haven't visited this restaurant for a while, so I wanted to give it a try again. The service is good, as the waitress was very fast to serve the table. The menu is nicely printed and is also available by scanning a QR code. The food is still so so. Overall, the food is somehow missing flavors. For example, the Shanghai meatball doesn't have a taste of meat. But the food presentation is up to standard. The restaurant is down to earth so it has a comfort and homey feeling.

Service is adequate but takeout portions noticeably smaller than dine-in. Like, literally several spoonfuls. Quite ridiculous.

Shanghai Style Fried Prawns - 3/5 There are two options: one with regular prawns, and one with river shrimp. We chose the river shrimp. The overall flavor was much milder than the authentic version--it lacked sweetness, and the dish didn't have the rich red and glossy look it usually should. Bean Curd with Vegetables - 5/5 This dish was a pleasant surprise, capturing the taste of spring--very light and refreshing. Lightly drizzled with sesame oil and chilled for a while, every bite felt fresh and cleansing, with a lingering aroma. Shanghai Veggie and Pork Rice Cake - 5/5 Highly recommended. The rice cakes were stir-fried to a perfect soft and chewy texture. The combination of vegetables and shredded pork brought out a deliciously savory flavor.

Definitely above your typical market rates, but I promise these will be true to the OG flavors. It's mostly a food pick-up type of service where you walk up to a shared space and ring a doorbell to have an aunty bring out your stuff. Online ordering was how I did it, but you can also call/text an order over the phone. The ordering process is a bit unusual in that you have to plan these ahead of time (by about 3-days or so depending on time of week) then wait for a confirmation text on the day of. Unfortunately, impromptu cravings must likely be held at bay. Sometimes you can short-notice stuff if they have leftovers, but that's defintely a gamble. With either planning or luck, you'll then walk off with a hefty bag of deliciousness. You can have the option of getting them freshly cooked or frozen (for stocking up). The zongzi are well packaged and tightly wrapped with color-codings to the string to separate the fillings from each other. It's a bit cryptic, but you'll notice those correspond with the pictures on their ordering site. Descriptions of the fillings are true to their amount and pretty well packed with goodness (none of the mostly-rice-zongzi here). After cracking the first one open and taking my first bite, it was like that Ratatouille moment with Anton having flashbacks to his childhood (but like the Chinese version). Filled with delicious aromas and rich succulent glory, with not a dry spot in (culinary) sight. If that hasn't convinced you to at least try these buggers, I'm not sure what will!
