Like most Chinese restaurants, especially ones that try to be authentic yet has menu items from the entire country, the dishes that end up being good are the dishes from the boss's province. Although it's called Chili Garden, their Sichuan dishes are not as good as their Northeast dishes, which are the most authentic. After coming here a few times, I recommend the 锅包肉 (Sweet and Sour Pork) and 拔丝地瓜 (Sweet Potato). I've ordered a few of their Sichuan plates, but none are authentic enough that I can recommend. The prices are a little steep for the amount of food. Since I'm pretty sure the boss is a Northeastern Chinese, I recommend ordering dishes that are from that region, and be prepared to embrace some quirky flavors of other Chinese cuisines that aren't present in their authentic counterparts. On Sunday evening during dinner time, this mall was quite busy and most of the other restaurants already had long lines. This place was almost full but still had seats available, so we decided to give it a try. There were three adults and two kids in our group, and we ordered five dishes. Lots of dry peppery flavor in all the dishes. Mushrooms had a good black pepper taste with a light crispy batter, I think oyster mushrooms which were both airy and slightly meaty, very good. We ordered 4 dishes (wish I remembered the specific names): Lotus root, fried rice, Chongqing chicken, and a cold chicken dish (口水鸡). All were really good but my favorite was the Chongqing chicken. It was so mouth-numbing and crunchy and hot and delicious. Lotus was crunchy and fresh. Fried rice was a good counter to the spiciness. The only thing was the 口水鸡; while the chicken wasn't dry or anything, it definitely wasn't spicy which I was sad about. Service was quick and efficient. Food came out quickly. Chili Garden has delicious Chinese food with huge portions! Glad they are open late until midnight too. Really hits your late night cravings! The Lamb Haggis Soup was soothing and a great start to our meal. It had nice chunks of lamb tripe and guts. You can tell it has been simmered for a while. The cilantro on top added freshness as well. Loved the Honey Walnut Prawns and Sweet and Sour Pork! The meats were super crispy and tossed in sweet sauces. Such satisfying crunch! I was pleasantly surprised by the Snakehead Fish Fillet with Vine Pepper. The green bunch of vine peppers had numbing tingly spice. There's also chili peppers in it to bring more heat. It had lots of ingredients like many fish pieces, black fungus, lotus root, and vermicelli that soaked up the rich flavors in the soup. The Spicy Lamb Chop was very savory and so tender, literally falling off the bone. There's a side bowl of spices you can sprinkle on top for an additional punch of heat. It's topped with toasted sesame seeds that gave some nuttiness. The Snow Pea Sprouts was bright and crisp, stir fried with freshly sliced garlic. They gave a generous amount that was piled up like a small mountain. Great veggie dish that balanced out all our other meat dishes. Everything was served family style and the strong flavors paired well with rice. Fast service - even though we ordered a lot of big dishes, they had all the food out really quickly. Everything was steaming hot and fresh. They had a lively atmosphere with many customers arriving throughout the evening with excited chatter. I have to say, my experience here has improved, though not much but improved. I decided to order a to-go lunch here since today was Friday and it was pay day, but mostly because I had cash. Normally I would order online with my debit card. I just don't want the dram with the staff here. If their food wasn't that good, I wouldn't spend another second at this restaurant. I am going to start off that this is one of the rare Chinese restaurants that actually know a thing or two about customer service. We had a 7p reservation and the table was not ready. We waited 45 minutes, but during that span the staff brought out appetizers and desserts. That never happens especially in Chinese restaurants so kudos to this establishment. The food here is always consistent. My friends and I have been coming here for the last 10 years. We watched them relocate a few doors down. The new location is better. The ambiance is a step up. The service is standard to excellent. When you want something, you can flag anyone and things get done. I can't say the same at every restaurant these days. Of course what's a review without discussing the food. Sichuan food varies greatly in the US, but here in the Bay Area you'll get mostly authentic Sichuan. The standard order is the Chong Qing spicy chicken. It looks very spicy because it comes in a bed of red chili peppers but it's medium spicy at most. It's a peppery type of spicy. Their stir fried green beans go really well with any order. It looks spicy too, but don't worry it's all a facade. One new thing they added here is the Malatang. That's basically build your own noodle soup. My wife loves it. It's about $17/lb with a minimum of 1lb. A typical soup is about 1.3 lbs and you'll be more than satisfied. Their medium spicy soup is just right in my opinion. My friend also like their dry pot which is a bowl of whatever you put in there. Its spicy comes from sichuan pepper balls so it's a numbing sensation rather than flaming hot spicy. I wish we didn't have to wait for our table, but we understand when restaurants are busy. They were accommodating and that is why this is a rare exceptional review. Finally, we often come here because they accommodate large groups of 10 or more well. read more

I am honestly shocked by how authentic their Sichuan and Chongqing dishes are. I had the intestines dry pot and asked them to add potatoes inside and they did. I also had one of the bullfrog dishes. The dishes were all so flavorful and they use a generous amount of fresh peppercorn which gives it a strong spicy and numbing flavor. A lot of restaurants who claim to have authentic Sichuan cuisine don't know how to achieve this strong numbing flavor, but this restaurant does it perfectly.
