We've been coming to Shang Cafe regularly ever since we fell in love with the same group's other spots -- Hunan Impression, Eastly, Ping's Bistro -- and this West San Jose location holds its own just fine. What keeps us coming back is how well they balance heat and flavor. The spice here never feels like a stunt -- it builds alongside real depth and seasoning. The Qiao Jiao Niu Rou (跷脚牛肉) is a standout -- a Sichuan-style boiled beef dish served in a rich, aromatic broth that somehow lands the spice-to-savory ratio perfectly every time. The Shui Zhu Yu (水煮鱼) is also worth ordering; the fish is decent quality, silky in texture, and the numbing chili oil broth does its job well. The restaurant ambient environment is ok and does get crowded often, but honestly that's just a symptom of being good - this place has built a real following in the South Bay. The Orchard Farms lot outside gives you plenty of parking, which takes some of the stress off a busy weekend dinner. One thing to flag: they now auto-include an 18% gratuity on the bill by default, so keep that in mind when you're reviewing the final check. My new go to spot for Sichuan food in the bay area! We ordered all of our dishes EXTRA HOT so it was VERY spicy. The standout dishes were the couples delight, kungpao chicken, and the cabbage stir fry. Since all the dishes are pretty spicy, I recommend ordering some non spicy dishes as well to pair with the spice liked fried rice and steamed egg. The spice level is probably one of the most intense I have tried to date out of all the Sichuan spots I have been to, but as a spice lover, its great! But probably not a place to go to if you can't tolerate some heat. They also ask if you need to adjust the spice level if needed, but I feel like the flavor wouldn't be the same if you did. Service is friendly and efficient. Our group's favorite meal of the night was the Spicy Crispy Pork Ribs by far. Perfectly crispy and flavor impressed all of us. Second favorite was the Dan Dan noodles! But overall we enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered, but definitely need to order a vegetable dish next time to buffer the spices . read more
