Probably the best baked bao with the most filling on Oahu. Not dim sum level but the best for local style baked manapua

    Craig T.

Talking about highway robbery I wanted a quick snack for lunch . Came across U-Choice in located outside Don Quijote Kaheka. I ordered 1 Man Tai su and 3 pork hash my bill was over $7. I couldn't believe when the cashier told me the price . The pork hash price is $1.65 per Wow! I guess I need to go to the Manapua truck I can probably get 4x pork hash and noodles w/a drink and it will still be under $7 bucks lol . For convenience and if your at Don Quijote Kaheka and wanted to eat Dim sum than probably go for it . Other than that I would rather go elsewhere.

Great Dim Sum & Even Better Service We stopped by U Choice Inn to pick up baked manapuas and other dim sum to bring to our family on the Big Island. I called in my order for a 2pm pickup, and everything was ready and waiting when I arrived--super smooth process. I ordered: - 14 manapuas - 12 pork hash - 4 curry flaky pan - 6 gin dui - 3 duck bao (white folded buns) Total came out to $110, and it was well worth it. The manapuas were large, generously filled, and had a slightly sweet glaze brushed on the outside--really tasty. The rest of the dim sum was flavorful and fresh, perfect for sharing. What really stood out was the service. I asked if they could separate the order into individual boxes since the food was going to different households, and they were more than happy to help. One of the staff members even asked if we were taking the food off-island. When I said yes, she explained that it's best to pack the manapuas at room temperature so the box doesn't get soggy from condensation. I hadn't even thought about that, and I really appreciated her taking the time to explain it. That kind of care and attention makes all the difference. The food was solid, but the thoughtful interaction and genuine hospitality were the icing on the cake. I'll definitely be coming back.

Located by Don Quijote, U-Choice In is a walk in spot with a plethora of dim sum offerings and other Chinese food. We parked in the parking lot out front and ended up going to U-Choice In and Don Quijote. We went earlier in the morning because we heard that there can be a line as the day goes on. Eventually, a line did form and most people seemed to know what they wanted coming in. The service was swift and the prices were OK. There are some tables outside of Don Quijote if someone wanted to sit down and eat. We decided to get the steamed charsiu manapuas and some siu mai. The manapuas were good, not a huge size, but they were very tasty. Next time, we will try a baked manapua or possibly some of the their other food offerings that can be seen behind the casing when you walk into the space.

Takeout Lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... Located at the far left end of the Don Quijote - Kaheka Street complex, U-Choice In has been around for years. It's an old school, dingy, establishment (with no air-conditioning) that serves local style Chinese cuisine. The door is kept open for the line of customers. Free shared parking is tight in the front of the building, but there's also a covered parking structure across Poni Street. Service is efficient and business-like. There was a line out the door, so every worker was busy. The line on the right is for plate lunches. There were many hot entrée choices. The line on the left is for dimsum, roast pork, and cha siu. Just give your order to one of the workers and they will package your food for you and tell the cashier how much to charge. I got a custard tart, rice cake, and coconut Jin due. The custard tart was small and average. The coconut Jin dui had good filling, but the mochi layer was a bit thick and chewy. The rice cake was the best of the 3 items! Some day, I'll go back and try other dimsum such as cha siu cherng funn, half moon, and taro puff. By the way - the advertising isn't correct. I asked for shrimp and spinach Dumpling - there was none. I also didn't see any dimsum with green wrappers.

Ordered the mapo tofu and the jook.....both wonderful and satisfying. The service is always fast and the cozy nook is always full and noisy. My go to place for consistent good food and dim sum.

Take out dim sum cam be a shot in the dark sometimes. This was no blind shot. I've passed by U Choice lots of times but never bothered to try their Managua. I was missing out. I only tried the char siu sue and baked bao but both rate a solid 4 with me. The outer pastry was light and either flaky (sue) or soft ( bao). I'm more used to a pie dough-like pastry fir the sue, but this dough, more croissant-like, works, too. Both had a generous portion of chopped char siu filling, which was very moist... Definitely coming back to try their other dim Sims and their noodles, too! Great friendly service and parking in thr DQ lot wasn't bad either.

Service is quick and fast. My cousin really liked the roast pork. The manapua filling tasted alright. The har gow was decent. The rice cake was delicious! This place is a takeout option only. It is very casual. The workers were friendly and patient as we decided what we wanted to order.

This review is based only on the steamed manapua. Looking at the restaurant, it's typical for a local style take out. It has a ready made take out counter for your starch and proteins. There's a dim-sum counter to get your whole roast duck, manapua or pork hash. But, the steamed manapua. The bread is the same kind of bread like the roast duck bun. So it's not the kind of soft fluffy style you would find at dim sum. I'll just call that one the " classic " style. So it's not the classic style but the texture is smooth, firm but still fluffy. The char-siu filling is good. Moist and meaty. Not overly sweet. The chicken filling was skimpy and maybe a little bit dry. Hard to tell since there was so little of it. In a the area? It's an option.

Today was a slow day at U Choice In. There was only one person in the place when I entered and he had already placed his order. I couldn't find anyone to take my order for a few minutes. I saw a sign to ring the bell for service, but lol there was no bell. After looking for someone, I saw a lady and she asked me what I wanted. It was clear that English was not her first language. So I switched to my Chinese American terrible attempt to request dim sum. Somewhat successful because everything else I just pointed to it. I picked up a steamed Manapua for my Dad. He loved it. The char siu steamed Manapua is rated 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. I was surprised that they sold palmiers! I asked if they made it locally. She answered in the affirmative. I tried one and it was good but not as flaky and buttery as I like them. I would rate the palmiers at 3 stars out of 5 stars.

Dim sum quality has gone downhill. Baked Char Siu bao was so dry, I could have played softball with it. Please go back to old recipes.

My buddy really likes siao mai, and he said KSR has the best ones out of the places I have brought him to in HNL. On the other hand, the manapua was just okay: The ratio of meat to bao was low. I took char siu fr the platter and added it to the bao. We might have been better off skipping the baos and ordering a rice or noodle plate. The har gow and spring rolls were pretty good. The rolls arrived piping hot, and the har gow had a nice texture in the wrapper. Fourthly, the cucumber was fresh & crunchy, and had lots of garlic. I ate some with the char siu to cut thru the fat. Lastly, the char siu & duck platter was very good. They do a good job of putting some char on the bbq pork. The duck was tasty, but there were a couple of bony pieces. Regarding the ambiance, its big in here. Although they don't use carts, the aisles are wide. The servers were friendly & warm. I would def return for dim sum, but I also want to come for dinner. The food is very good, and the prices are reasonable.
