Came here to bring back a dozen Manapua, 6 baked, 6 steamed. I'd have gotten more but a box only fits 12. Manapua is a Chinese food item called Char Siu Bao or in english, BBQ Pork Bun. In Hawaii we call it Manapua, derived from the Hawaiian words, Mea Ono Pua'a (Pork food item) In the Philippines it's referred to as Siao Pao (pronounced Show Pow) i think derived from a shortened, mispronunciation of the Chinese, Char Siu Bao, from when the Chinese occupied the Philippines. Whatever you call them, the ones from here are large and delicious. Both the steamed and the baked have a chopped or chipped pork filling which i like better than either the cubed type that most baked types have or the shredded type that most steamed types have. It has more caramelization and depth of flavor than the competition. The baked manapua here are much bigger than the ones you get at Royal Kitchen and way more stuff inside too. The steamed ones have a better filling to bread ratio than those at Char Hung Sut or Libby's and not shredded pork. The steamed ones are different from the kind you get when you go to Dim Sum, even though the bread is white, its not as fluffy as the Hong Kong style ones. Guess if you walk up to a counter and order a "Manapua" then its considered local style. If you're in a Dim Sum place and ordering a "Char Siu Bao", then its Chinese style right?! There's lots of sides to choose from although everything looked pretty greasy. I settled on the fried rice, and orange chicken and the shrimp with green beans for my sides. Fried rice was bland. I saw bits and pieces of green peas, carrots, and scrambled egg. No seasoning whatsoever. I make better fried rice at home!! The orange chicken was moist, but nothing extraordinary. The shrimp with green beans was good though. It wasn't oily or too garlicky. They also serve dim sum and strangely enough, Hawaiian lunch plates. Another convenient keto / paleo option near Ala Moana. They offer a variety of savory roast meats and vegetables. I got the roast pork and the pork bitter melon. The roast pork was flavorful and thoroughly cooked yet still moist with a wonderfully crisp skin. The bitter melon was prepared with the burnt ends from the roast pork so it had a deep grilled flavor; a slight char which complemented the bitterness well. It was the first time at Don Quiote in a while, when I was shopping with 2 friends of mine, whom happen to be incoming sophomores at the university of Hawaii. This Chinese restaurant place is reminiscent of Panda Express and it was pretty good. The set up seemed drab, but I guess it's like that. Like any Chinese fast food place, they have pans of assorted entrees to fill you up with + along with rice, chao mein or chao fun for your fancy. What I found very interesting is that they serve Hawaiian food here too. In a separate counter and a large Hawaii picture proudly displayed, they had the sample Hawaiian foods, that came with huge mounds of white rice. My friend could not finish it and had to take back to her dorm with her. While I was craving for some Hawaiian food today, I decided that it wasn't worth the price and I was kind of full at the time. The service my friend received was average, since it was just a fast food experience and not a sit down restaurant, so service was good enough. U-Choice also serves dim sum too, in the far corner of the restaurant. They have a pretty good assortment of food, but I probably won't be buying anything here, since I don't frequent the area as much as I would like. Just so happened I was shopping here and noticed this place. Located in the same complex as Don Quijote, it's the last restaurant on Kaheka Street, when you are turning into the parking lot. The parking situation can be a pain, when you come here during peak shopping times. They take credit cards, so that's the plus side for me, if I do come back. Been going here for many years. Service and food are always "hit or miss". Recently, the food has been getting worse and the portions getting smaller. With the advent of the lockdown and other problems, this chinese take out has hit rock bottom. For example, I got four steamed char sui maunapua and the amount of "filling" was about half of what other places put in. The six pork hash were rather tasteless as well. I think they use a lot of filler to use less ground pork for the hash to save money. I know that times are tough all over, but if people pay good money for something, they should not be short changed in the quality or quantity of the food they receive. Went a second time to try to get the baked chicken manapua. Sold out again. Not as surprised because this time I went around 6pm (before was at noon) and I suppose most things would be running low. As I was beginning to be disappointed I saw a customer order a lunch plate. Y'know, the decide 1-3 entree styrofoam box deal. I saw that her box was really full and suddenly became hungry seeing the generous portions. I didn't know that 10% odd after 6pm was a thing but I'm glad I stopped by then. I got the maximum three entree option combo lunch plate and with the 10% off it came out to just under $10. As suspected portions were generous. Actually my third entree was served in an extra container. The server asked me if I was staying in or to go. I said stay in so she said she would fill my extra container up a little more because she didn't need to close it. I really couldn't finish the lunch plate. I got to about half then walked my food off going home. Most of the entrees had a type of liquid sauce so it did spill out. My three entree combo lunch plate consisted of fried rice, the large red pork option and chicken and vegetables plus chicken. As mentioned the entrees all had sauce so the meat was soft but kinda salty. I enjoy sweetness when it comes to those red color pork meat dishes (yes I like Panda Express) so I missed that there. The chicken in the sauce was actually very good, and not too salty. There was a little more nuance to the flavors instead of just salt. The meat was tender which was nice but also there was just a lot more bones than I'm used to. Not for fast eaters. If I am being too vague describing the dishes it's because there weren't many useful labels and I pretty much just pointed. Lastly the vegetables and the chicken dish, that was good. The vegetables were pretty doused in sauce but still managed to remain somewhat crispy. I liked the portions of my food and the price and the helpful discount and the lady who was handling the food service station (she has a stern manner but actually was pretty generous), and I didn't mind my lunch plate. But just overall want more different kinds of flavors (sweet, sour, spicy, etc) and textures (crisp and crunchy specifically). If you're very hungry there are decent options, but you will want to try to balance your options (like rice instead of chow mein if you are getting the saltier dishes) so your tastebuds will not be overwhelmed. read more

I was just griping to my friend that I hadn't found a great manapua spot along my regular beaten paths and then the same day I went to Don Quijote (by Ala Moana) and the Universe whacked me ! U-Choice In is a food spot on the exterior front left corner of Don Quijote and the steamed manapua was hot, soft, delicious, and had filling with visible chunks of char siu pork (as opposed to the char siu cat food you typically find in the 7/11 manapua). This place is pretty good for a Chinese restaurant, not the best best but certainly not the crapiest. I always get a plate lunch so im basing this review off of their plate lunch entrees. I always get, the orange chicken, beef broccoli and chowfun with fried rice. To some extent it taste better then Panda express's orange chicken. which you should try, beef broccoli is so so and the fried rice is pretty good. I am was glad that i got to eat here, which i don't get to. What got me interested was their 10% discount from 6pm-closing, which was a good plan to do. I am glad that they do this so that way we save money and are on tight budgets and don't wanna overspend too much money. Also if you use a debit card and credit card, make sure that it's over 5.00 or more. When i ate here, the food was not too bad, the least to say, especially if you wanna have something fast and easy. I do have a suggestion though, make sure that there is more meat and less fat in the charsiu, which i do love. Hopefully that the next time i plan to dine here, maybe see what kinds of offerings they have so it's not too limited and to the people's liking, like lemon chicken or mochiko chicken along with brown rice and crispy wonton along with gau gee too. My family would come here and buy Pork Hash from them all the time. Especially when we are leaving the island. We buy in bulk. And spend $100+ on Pork Hash alone for families in the mainland. We have been buying from them for years and I would usually come here when I'm near. I must say their pork hash is kinda expensive. $1.05 each. I swear it was cheaper before. My bb and his family is Chinese so I know how it should taste like but the food here is far from Chinese or good. I didn't expect that with all the Chinese people working here. They are on the far left when facing the entrance of Don Quijote. The only good thing about this restaurant is that you can dine inside away from the sun in some AC. The pork hash, half-moon, and roast pork are three of my favorites. I don't think I have ever had roast pork with skin as thick and crispy as the one at U-Choice In (except my fave place in Aiea).
