Old School still here in Kaimuki and it sure is Happy Days more known for their dim sum which I've enjoyed in the past but tonight I was my own for dinner and just wanted something hot and comforting so here I am in Kaimuki where parking can be the trickiest issues though lost of metered parking is available most are taken and on this busy Waialae road it does get kinda crazy sometimes. Municipal lots are available as well as they do have direct entrance from the back lot for convenience but I was fortunate to secure a street parking so running i was fast and easy...much easier than deciding from their massive menu so I just kept it simple with their Oyster Sauce Chicken with Cake Noodle. The staff there is very friendly upon taking my order and as I waited for my order it was nice to see the classic vibe of staff making wonton during their down time amounts the hundreds of seatings they still have to this day is so nostalgic. As I enjoyed my dinner at home it was so warm and delicious just as I've always enjoyed in the past like nothing has changed just the comfort of what I grew up in Kaimuki. Thank you! read more

The Honolulu Fire Department responded to Happy Days Chinese Seafood Restaurant on Waialae Avenue shortly after 1 p.m. "I spoke to some of the people that were eating, and they said they were able to move out of the way," said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Jacob A. Pekelo. "It wasn't like a sudden boom. It was more of a gradual -- it happened, then other pieces started falling, so everyone self-evacuated." Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said four women in their 80s were evaluated at the scene. One woman suffered lacerations and was taken to an emergency room in stable condition. Three others suffered minor injuries but declined transport to a hospital. The cause of the collapse is under investigation. Police closed 11th Avenue between Waialae and Harding avenues, and the eastbound lane of Waialae Avenue between 11th and 12th avenues to allow first responders access to the area. Happy Days in Kaimuki is a long-time Chinese restaurant with dim sum offerings. Their dim sum is okay but their siu mai, ha gao (shrimp dumplings) tend to be smaller than other competitors. I really liked their boneless chicken cake noodle dish; crispy cake noodle with chicken, sautéed greens, and thickened sauce was a perfect blend of everything. Overall, its survived the test of time and a good place for dim sum, although I've had better from other options in Honolulu area. read more

We were figuring out where to eat for lunch and ended up at this Chinese restaurant that also serves dim sum! We always passed by it when we're in the area but never did stop by to try until today. The food was good. Our only con is that it takes a bit of time for the dim sum carts to come around especially since it was busy and lunch hour. We were always left waiting for more. Some items weren't available in the carts and we would have to order them instead which took even longer. When this place gets busy it can get pretty tight inside with the tables and chairs being a little too close to each other. Would we come back? I think Happy Day's has decent dimsum! it is definitely not bad at all! However I would say it is just okay. overall, I believe that the pricing is overpriced for dimsum. The flavor is average, not too much and not little, the standard dimsum you can expect. They give you hot sauce and vinegar in small containers when you get takeout. It's been awhile since I had dim sum and my family wanted to have our monthly dinner at this location. They do have good customer service even though it felt at one point we were being rushed. The wait for the food isn't long and when your order comes in, it seems like everything comes all at once. We barely had room on the turnstile (lazy susan) on our table. We ended up having to put some other dishes on an empty table. The portions are plenty. We had more than enough leftovers to pack for each family. They did great accommodating a party of 20. First lunch with the family outside the house! After a wet morning doing New Year's grave visits we met my aunty and cousin for lunch. Mom had a hankering for dim sum and this is one of our go-to places. So little tip, if you go later (1:00-ish), its not as busy... but you will risk that some items are sold out. Also, ask them to cut stuff in half so you can try more things! We got there around 1:30 or so and got seated pretty quickly. within 2 seconds of sitting down a cart comes by (with all the sweet stuff). We got the taro ball and the last order of egg custard tarts. We also got jin dui with an inside and with pork inside. Cause desserts are always first. Then we got a shrimp and spinach, beef bean curd, charsiu bao, shu mai and mochi rice (always a favorite). They kept coming around with the carts but by then we had so much food. we had also ordered beef chow fun and cake noodle with chicken and choy sum.One lady kept trying to give us more items but we just wanted water and tea refills. I really appreciate the frequency of their visits but then I realized it was cause lunch hour was finishing up. I watched the staff roll the carts around the restaurant hitting up all the tables that came in after us until there was just a handful of people. Thank goodness it wasn't busy cause they let us sit and talk and finish eating until we couldn't move! Surprisingly for what we got our bill with tax was just abut $100. Happy Days is a pillar of the community and the best dim sum you'll find in Honolulu outside of Chinatown. This is my family's go-to spot, and while it's certainly not a 5-star dining experience, it's a solid restaurant that I've been frequenting for 20 years and will continue to come back. Some dim sum favorites are the meat gok, siu mai, stuffed eggplant, and look fun. Can't go wrong with the dim sum as long as you go late morning through lunch time. Later in the afternoon onward the selection dwindles and the food may be older, but that's to be expected. My family's regular menu favorites include the cake noodles and salt and pepper pork chops. Standard local Chinese restaurant staples done well that don't disappoint. Sometimes we'll even order a party size tray of the cake noodles and eat it for a few days straight. There's a large paid parking lot in the shopping center and plenty of metered street parking around the area. However, expect both the parking lot and the restaurant itself to be packed during peak times like weekend lunchtime and especially on holidays. The restaurant itself is a bit grungy and no frills, but that's just the way I like it. I'm not here for a fine dining experience or hipstery/Instagram-worthy decor. The workers can be a bit a bit brusque and direct, but always very friendly and efficient. Again, just the way I'd want a good Chinese restaurant to be. My great uncle is friends with him, and asks the kitchen staff to make some home style classics that you can't find on the menu, and they always do a great job with those. It truly tastes like a home-cooked meal My favorites from the menu, though, are the meat gok (it's like savory jin dui - with fried mochi outside and a filling of pork, water chestnut, mushroom, etc), the fried look fun rolls (esp with char siu! It's the perfect bouncy texture, with a lightly crisp/browned outside), the steamed fu pei guen (bean curd wrapped around a savory filling), the West lake soup, roast duck... so many good ones. Happy day is a staple in my family and is an established member of the kaimuki/waialae community and food scene. The dim sum is solid and the dinner service is everything you want in a Chinese restaurant--packed, loud, plates flying everywhere, and screaming workers. A group of us made a reservation for a private room for ten people. I was the first to arrive for this meeting and greeted. I've been here before at an after glow with two other acapella choruses. We were service by a Chinese man dressed in his Chinese red coat. We ordered the $319 meal for ten and gave choices with three or four. I was hoping honey walnut shrimp which was on the list! Don't go too late, they kind of stop making dim sum and choices get limited. Ordered the mochi rice pouch, siu mai, pork tofu skin, baked char siu bao, char siu look fun, taro gok, and the pork gin dui. Honestly, this was not their best work. Steamed stuff was the best, temperature-wise. The baked/fried items were not hot enough. I found things that we usually really enjoy like the mochi rice and char siu bao to be lacking flavor. We had to wait awhile for any kind of service - they have really pared down the number of staff, which is sad. The dining area wasn't busy, maybe 6 people dining in, so it was quiet. The lady that took my order was pleasant. The person that ordered after me got her food first, not a big problem, as their order was done first. However when my food baskets came out, another worker put them out and told another customer that they could look and point to anything they wanted. As the other customers looked at my food, one of them kept touching the basket asking the other if this is what they wanted. The worker eventually indicated that the baskets were someone else's order, the customer still continued to touch the baskets. They were not wearing masks while leaning over the food. Went in yesterday for lunch. Greeted upon entering and seated right away. Water provided and carts came immediately after: look fun cart of which we ordered the char siu variety. They fry it up and serve it with a very delicious hoisin sauce. Next was the DimSum cart where we ordered shrimp with chives, half moon, and pork hash. Last we ordered the nori seafood roll along with fried shrimp and mini char Siu bao. Everything was so tasty and hot. Delicious all around served with hot tea. I am always satisfied with the quality, appearance, affordability, and taste of Happy Days food which pleases our local palettes. Hot foods come out hot and cold foods come out pleasantly cold. I expect the staff pushing their dim sum carts from table to table to be hard pressed to serve as many diners as they can in the short lunch hour. They got an array of food stuff to advertise and sell and it's amazing how we can still understand what seems to be Chinese gibberish as they describe what they are selling. Happy Days is no different than Chinese restaurants you would find in Honolulu Chinatown. Clean enough to be clean and healthy enough to be healthy. Tables and chairs are thoroughly wiped down after each seating and floors are cleaned up constantly. The decor is pleasantly Chinese and localized. They even have a small private dining room for small parties. To avoid waitstaff from visiting our table and hovering while we make up our minds I preorder or order the food for our table when all of our guests have arrived by going up to the cashier and either speak to the owner Lisa or her daughter and place our order. Happy Days can be expected to be very busy during lunch and dinner time so we make reservations and food choices ahead of time. Constantly satisfying, it's our "go to" for Chinese cuisine. read more
