This is a tough review to process as our night started out in the 5-Star range and much of the food is very good, but our server ruined our night, she was horrible. She may have been new and very inexperienced, but either way, we're local and were very excited to eat at Toranj, but she ruined our night. Our server was a nice person, but simply horribly trained, or just a person that had no clue how to be a good server. And a bad omen? The host, she was on the phone we walked in, no "hello" or any acknowledgement, she ignored us for 5 minutes, not even, "I'm so sorry, I'll be with you in a minute" ... finally after a long wait, our server happily seated us. Oddly, others behind us with 2 people were offered a 2 or 4 top, we were only offered a two, as you'll see as we go on, the theme of the night, we were simply treated horribly. A few highlights, the rice with raisens and more was delicious, the filet and ground beef kabob's were very good. Some of the areas I hope the restaurant will look into and you sould know if you get our server, you should know. 1. A pretty horrible margherita, how do you make a bad marg? - but they did ... SUPER SWEET and weird flavor and we ordered a good tequila. 2. When they brought the bread, maybe a nan, it was delicious and warm .... but we ordered some dips, yoghurt and the eggplant, which were good, but by the time they came, our bread was cold, we had to order a fresh batch. 3. Our server suggested medium for our meat, against our better judgment, most chef's suggest medium rare, and we were right the meats were tasty, but horribly overcooked. 4. Generally speaking, food was pretty good. 5. The rosewater ice cream was not to my liking, but I guess if you like rosewater you might like it. 6. The Greek Salad, WAY too tart, WAY ... ! Couldn't eat it. If they call it "Greek", why not make it greek, simple cucumbers, tomato, onion, pepper, olive oil, salt ... not some unknown TART ewww. The bad: Again, as much as our server was a nice person, I could write a novel on how she ruined out night. - She almost never came around to check on us. - All our food came out super quick, no spacing between salad and bread and meal. - She never cleaned or even asked if we were through with our salad, apps, bread, just left it all on the table, it was one big nasty crowded mess. I had to eat my fine "filet" alongside my messy salad on the same tiny messy plate, as she never offered a new plate. Our table was so crowed I had to put stuff on the floor to make room - how could she not notice? Not once did she ask, "are your finished with the salad and other items so we can make room for your main course", or "can I get you clean plates and slivewear"? She must have passed our mess at least a dozen times without checking in. - She also tried to snatch my cocktail, (as horrible as it was) before I finished it. - We just went from pretty tasty possible 5-star night to a horrible night. - When we asked for our leftovers to be boxed, she brought us plastic cups with lids and noted what should go where. No bag, we sat there, spooning our own food out into tubs, she didn't offer to clean the other stuff off, and gave us no bag to carry our our mulitple items. A nice young man did give us a bag and suggested two and was nice and bagged things for us. - The real kick in the face, exactly right next to us, our server cleaned our neighbor's table spotless, boxed their food, provided a bag ... why did she not do the same for us? We also noticed about 4 couples come and go in literally 1/2 the time we sat there with no attention. We again are locals, probably the best dressed folks there, and were treated like well ... I won't use a bad word. Please train our server to learn how to take care of all customers, not just some, be attentive and maybe provide some fresh plates and clean our table. Again, food .... mostly good, but the entire experience made a good restaurant horrible. I think there's hope and could have probably been a 5 star review with a 5 star server ... it's a shame she ruined our night. I'm a huge Persian cuisine kinda guy so I wanted to sample a variety of food. We opted for Family plate 3 so that we could taste kebabs galore. The chicken and filet kebabs were succulent and flavorful. Likewise, the chicken koobideh (ground chicken) was delicious with an easy to digest texture. The beef koonideh (ground beef) was a bit under seasoned imo. The plate is complimented with a generous portion of rice. In addition, it comes with salad. However, we upgraded to Shirazi salad cuz that's just what any Persian food lover would do. Shirazi is fresh and lemony. I love to consume and compare fesenjoon stews. This one was a little more liquid phase and tart than I am accustomed to but tasty nonetheless. Eggplant appetizer had nice flavor and perfect to dip the bread in. The bread is massive and the portion generous. I'm used to the eggplant served as a dip but this was served as disc that had a cat food vibe about it. Had such a great experience at Toranj! The food was honestly amazing--everything we tried was full of flavor and beautifully presented. I snagged an early Valentine's Day dinner reservation for 3 of us. I think we were seated at the best table in the house, I'll commit it to memory for our next visit. Mina was our server. She was a gem putting up with our questions and desire to learn some Persian words for our favorite dishes. Let's just say my new favorite is: Kashke bademjan. Boom! That was just a few minutes into perusing the menu - we dove in: hummus, olives, yogurt, falafel, lentil soup, tabbouleh, spritzy Raspberry refreshers and Rombauer Chardonnay. Filet mignon shish kebab, Juicy chicken (their signature dish and they had me at "Cherry rice"), and Lamb shank. Again, all yummy delicious. Yes, leftovers for sure. The setting is pleasing...a bright but understated esthetic. Except for the amazing aromas nothing screams restaurant in the dining area. There's a small bar, 4 seats - perfect for a quick bite or a full meal. Staff was friendly and happy to share their favorites and answer questions. Parking is tight, the small lot will of course get full during the prime dining hours. I saw only 1 space for disabled parking. Street parking can get difficult. Tonight was lively, the restaurant was full but it wasn't overly noisy. Dishes were served clean and perfectly placed. A single dainty pink rose was placed on top of some appetizers and drinks, so sweet. As we left the restaurant, red roses were offered to those who wanted them. Here are some suggestions for improvement: - tip suggestion amount should not be calculated inclusive of tax - if someone swaps an appetizer (and never actually gets it), it should be removed from bill - server should put leftovers in boxes (not customer) if I am paying $40 for an entree - to go bags that are the same size as a Ralph's grocery brown bag are not a great look - floor of bathroom covered in soap is not ideal and dangerous - getting apps before drinks - dropping a carafe of water and not pouring water for guests - not getting menu suggestions or ideas Minor stuff, yes, but easily fixable as the food is actually tasty. The inside of this place is clean, elegant, and lit well. The portions are huge, the menu is vast, and the service is fast. We got a meal for two and had leftovers to take home. The chicken and beef were so juicy. The tomatoes and onions had a great char. The basmati rice soaked up all of the flavor from the meats and vegetables, so flavorful. Their garden salad was a hefty portion. It was refreshing: light lemony dressing, crispy iceberg/romaine lettuce, and chopped into bite sizes. They also give a complimentary piece of flatbread when you sit down. This was paired with butter, but it did not need it because it was already flaky and buttery. All of the staff were friendly and, although we didn't get any dessert this time around, they kindly offered the dessert menu many times. We will definitely be back! read more

Toranj is a major letdown after the closure of the reliable Seaside Palace, in Torrance. After one dine-in and five takeout orders, the quality has only gotten worse. The food is overpriced and poorly made. The rice is consistently undercooked, oily, and flavorless--completely unacceptable for a Persian restaurant. The chicken koobideh is bland to the point of being inedible, and the fish kebab has no flavor while being priced like a high-end South Bay spot. If you're new to Persian food, don't judge it by this place--it's not even close to the real thing. read more

It was our first time trying Persian food and everything we got was good. The presentation and ambiance of the restaurant is amazing, perfect for date night. The plate portions are shareable if you order appetizers, we ended up with leftovers enough for a meal. Out of everything we tried, I liked the Boneless Chicken Thigh plate the most. It was juicy, tender, and flavorful. I wish the plates came with a side salad and some sort of sauce. It felt like those things were missing, but next time we're order those to try. They have a super small parking lot, so we ended up doing street parking. The workers are very nice and friendly. They have lunch specials, definitely want to come back for that. The service here is very lack luster which is why I have to give them 3 stars. We were seated and not offered any water. They started cleaning the restaurant with guests still there like they were all in a rush to get home. The smell of fabuloso ruined my appetite! The decor was beautiful and there was a live guitarist on Friday night. At 9 he packed up pretty quick and left and there was no soft background music or anything to keep the atmosphere pleasant. The best Tahdig I've had and I've tried many. Crispy and evenly cooked. The beef and chicken Koobideh was well seasoned and juicy. The eggplant, Kashke Bademjan, was beautifully presented and had the perfect balance of flavors. Service was excellent and it was a busy early Saturday dinner. The only issue is parking. The moment the filet mignon kebab touched my tongue, reality shattered. The perfectly charred exterior gave way with the gentlest pressure, releasing an explosion of smoky, caramelized notes that seemed to echo through every corner of my consciousness. The meat--impossibly tender, bathed in saffron and butter--melted into nothingness, each fiber surrendering completely. Waves of umami crashed over me like a tidal force, while the subtle kiss of flame added a primal depth that awakened something ancient within my very soul. But there was no time to recover. The sea bass arrived like a silver warrior on the battlefield of flavor. One bite and I was underwater, surrounded by the pristine essence of the ocean itself. The flesh was so delicate it seemed to dissolve into pure taste--sweet, clean, with a buttery richness that defied logic. Herbs and citrus danced across the surface like skilled swordsmen, each note perfectly balanced, each sensation building toward an impossible crescendo. After Seaside Palace closed, my family and I had been missing local Persian food since getting up to Westwood isn't always an option. The good: the ambiance is wonderful and the food was delightful. We had the grape leaves, hummus, signature juicy chicken and lamb shank. The lamb was perfectly prepared. The bread was hot and fresh. The chicken platter was large and my mom and I couldn't finish it even though we shared. We wanted to try the tahdig, but they said no more for the evening :( So why the three stars? Service. We had a reservation for 6 PM on NYE. We arrived at 6. The woman running the hostess stand was clearly overwhelmed. I wasn't even able to check in until 6:15. But then she told us "hold on." Finally, after 15 minutes, I asked if there was an estimate and she said a few minutes and we were seated around 6:35. I'm not sure why check-in took so long... even busy restaurants on a packed night can usually take your name quickly and proactively know how long until they will be able to seat you. 35 minutes after reservation time is quite a bit and thankfully we were somewhat flexible with time. Once we were seated it was marginally better. Our server was very friendly and helpful, but our table was often overlooked. Multiple times we had to wave someone down to get attention. I don't know if it was the location where they seated us, just still working out new location logistics or what, but the experience was disappointing. I will definitely give them another shot, and am really hoping this was just new restaurant glitches. read more

I was finally able to visit Toranj after giving them the necessary time to open and adjust, as it can be a learning curve, especially in a new area. I'm pleased to share that I had a wonderful experience. The staff were very friendly, especially the busboys. They were polite, respectful, and attentive. We opted for family-style dining, as it's always the best bang for your buck and allows you to try a bit of everything. The juicy chicken was my favorite.
