Now that we have a new, amazing movie theater (have you tried $8 Tuesdays?), we have gone back to Nomad a few times, and I can't believe I have not reviewed it yet. The Mediterranean menu is inventive and amazing top to bottom. Start by heading to nomadsouthbay.com and sign up for their email list to get a free hummus appetizer. It's $16 on the menu and comes with a still puffy from the oven flat bread (pita). It's worth the money, but definitely worth joining the email list. After the hummus, we split five dishes for the four of us. The roasted cauliflower is straight forward and delicious, served atop a lovely tahini and turmeric sauce. The kale salad was light and delightful. The lamb kabob plate was exactly what you want in Mediterranean food. The steak atop risotto, a favorite from Jackson's (the prior establishment here), was near perfect. But the star of the show was the Salmon Esquites--perfectly cooked salmon over fresh corn, lime, crema, and pinto beans. I am salivating writhing this! And I'm going back soon! read more

I've been wanting to come here for a while and finally decided to visit yesterday. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. It was a little hard to find the entrance, but you enter through the patio area. The interior is very chic. It feels like Tulum vibes. Now, for the important part, the food. I ordered the crispy Branzino and a side of charred broccoli. I will be honest and say the presentation was a little underwhelming however, the taste was incredible! I literally ate everything! It was the best meal I've had in a while. I also had a spicy Mezcal with aloe cocktail, very good. The bartender came to my table personally and gave me this recommendation which I thought was really cool. I believe this cocktail will be on their Spring menu fyi. Overall, a great experience. I was very pleasantly surprised by this restaurant, which I had picked largely because it was close to where I needed to be afterwards. But it turns out the food was excellent, the service friendly and the dining space pleasant without being ostentatious. And it was QUIET enough to have a dinner conversation without having to shout. There was a bit of background music but it was barely audible so it did not cause diners to shout to hear each other speak. And the tables are far enough apart, so you get visual and auditory privacy. In fact, the restaurant layout is suited for privacy. It's sort of a U-shape rather than a large room, so you're not near a lot of other diners, and the bar is in a separate room, so diners don't get a lot of bar noise. Importantly, there is plenty of free parking in off-street lot. We went during LA Restaurant week and had the special menu. I had the scallops, which were elegantly served on half-shells and were cold and delicious. Two of us had the Branzino, which was served whole, batter-fried, and it was not only beautiful to look at but yummy. I had the rice pudding desert, which was excellent, with flavors I did not recognize but enjoyed. One of my companions had the flan and praised it, though I didn't taste it myself. At $45 for the three-course meal, I thought it was a steal. I had an alcoholic drink called The Heights of Machu Picchu for $17, which is a bit on the pricey side, but it was absolutely worth it. It was cool and refreshing with a flavor I hadn't tasted before. All told, this was an excellent dining experience. Kudos to server Elysia L. and her two helpers for being friendly and attentive while not being obtrusive. Now that I've discovered Nomad, I plan to go back and try some of the other stuff on their ample menu. read more

We came for Dine LA dinner last night. It was $45 for select items on their menu. (They did not offer Happy Hour since they were offering Dine LA menu.) I enjoyed everything that I ordered, from the generous portion of mussels, the crispy whole branzino, and the crème brûlée. My husband also had the mussels, the lamb shank, and rice pudding. He did not care for the lamb shank. He said it was tender, but would have preferred a different sauce. He also wishes that he got the crème brûlée instead. Our server was ok, but seemed rushed. There was a lot of free 2-hour parking when we arrived for an early meal at 4:30 pm. If there were more entree offerings during Dine LA, I'd go back again. Stopped in before a movie and happened to catch their Happy Hour. I'm vegan, so I ordered the hummus plate, guac and chips, and fries. Everything was tasty, though the portions were on the smaller side. The service was a bit unusual. It doesn't seem like you get a dedicated server --whoever walks by handles whatever you need. It made things a little confusing since the person who took our drink order never returned, and we ended up flagging down different staff members for the rest of our visit. My wine also took quite a while to arrive, even though we were seated at the bar and I noticed other drinks going out first. It may have just been an off night. The vibe is cute, and the shared parking with the cinema makes it a convenient stop before a movie. read more

This is really weird but... can I do a review for the best Cesar salad of my life? Like, seriously. I'm just as shocked as you are. Popped into Nomad for lunch with my boss and while the service was a bit slow and absent minded--had to send back my wrap for being the wrong protein but it was cheerfully replaced, and the restaurant got crowded really quickly--and I was impressed with the cool laid back ambiance with a more dignified menu. I ordered the Cesar salad almost on a whim. Needed some roughage to go with my carbs I guess. Dude, what? How am I in love with a salad? It was incredible. No soggy iceberg or wilted romaine, the veg was crisp and fresh. I can't remember if it was bread crumbs or croutons but I do remember the FLAVOR and the CRUNCH were top tier. But the true star was the dressing. Creamy, tangy, FLAVORFUL. It was amazing. I filled up on salad and fries and brought my wrap home where my dog promptly stole it from me. But I'm not even mad. We love Nomad, especially during Dine LA where we get to enjoy a 3-course meal at a set price. By making it a date night, we get to experience 6 different items with flavors and ingredients from different parts of the world. My favorite today was the sea bass, it was beautifully served, raw, I was very pleasantly surprised. I almost asked for chopsticks until my wife reminded me this is a Mediterranean dish. I forked it and it was amazing, fresh and tasty, highly recommended! The short ribs is usually favorite, it came out nicely, falling off the bones, only thing was the sauce was a bit salty for me. I wish there was a side of rice or bread, ha ha. May be I will ask the polenta to be in the side in the future. My wife had the Hummus Meeze board, we loved everything on it and wish there was a bit more bread to help us finish every bit. Global spot that is a hidden gem. Came here for brunch with my family and we made a reservation online in advance. It's located by the movie theater and there was plenty of parking. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Our waitress was friendly and we were able to promptly place our orders. My boyfriend and I split the chimichurri steak and eggs and the French toast. My sister ordered bacon on the side for her French toast (extra cost) while my mom had the enchiladas. They're vegan friendly and my dad had the Mediterranean kebab which was vegan. Nice ambiance (open architecture) and pretty prompt service but the kitchen took forever (like closer to 45 minutes) and the place isn't slammed nor even that full. My friend and I decided to try Nomad for dinner tonight. The restaurant is modern and decorated very well. They were serving their regular menu plus a prix fixe menu for DineLA week. I decided to try the prix fixe - Course 1 - Burrata & Pistachio Pesto, Course 2 - Filet Mignon Lomo Saltado, Course 3 - Creme Brulee. My friend had the Nomad Hummus and Grilled Loin of Lamb. Our waitress was super friendly and helpful. The food was flavorful and great quality. Initially, I was going to order the Balsamic Braised Short Ribs, but unfortunately, they had run out. The filet and lamb were both tender, juicy, and flavorful. The Creme Brûlée was excellent, though I would have wanted a thinner burnt sugar layer. It was still so good. Scott, the owner, came to our table to chat with us and ask us about the food and how we found them. He was friendly and grateful for our patronage. He shared how he came up with the concept of the restaurant. We really enjoyed the conversation. I went for dine LA on 1/25 and had a 3 course meal for $45 which was quite a deal. Since there was 3 of us, we decided to sample 3 different appetizers consisting of 4 scallops with Serrano chile, mussels with fries and burrata cheese with grapes and toast. All were very tasty. Two of us got the lamb shank with risotto and one for the branzino which was flash fried and with a somewhat sweet Asian (?Thai) sauce. Both were amazing and generous in size. We were greeted by the manager and then ignored for a good 20 mins before anyone came to check on us to see if we were ready to order. Ambiance was nice, with indoor heat lamps and a cozy feeling. Met a friend for an early lunch. Free parking is available for 90 minutes albeit I don't think it's a problem unless it's super busy. The restaurant is on the backside of Rosecrans, catering to the office and businesses in that location. Nice ambiance, good service, but boring food. If the owners' aim is to showcase some international favorites I suggest they go and revisit some restaurants that feature some of their dishes. The papaya salad was bland and the papaya did not seem super fresh. The shrimp on the side was a boring presentation. The lamb shishkabob platter was a nice presentation but the lamb was not grilled. It was soft and not fatty at all but again, so tasteless. Not for me. read more

Had a sister date and she picked nomad for us to meet up at. The place is tucked in the corner so it's easy to miss but once you get inside, it seems very spacious and they have a covered outdoor area that made it very nice even though it was chilly outside. We decided to go with the dine LA menu, which had three courses. Our first course came out and I had the scalloped chilies and my sister had the beef risotto. Both of them were so amazing. The flavor of the risotto with the mushrooms to die for and the beef was so tender didn't even need a knife.. We got to chatting And it was over 30 minutes when I realized that our second course had not come out. During that entire time I had not seen our waiter and they had not checked up on us, so I tried to fly down a waitress who told me she would be right with me and then never came back. Our waiter came around a few minutes later, and I asked about our food and he said that the kitchen was understaffed and they were a little busy because of dying in LA. Two other tables that came after us had gotten their food before us. And I understand that restaurants can have call out, but that would've been good to know at the beginning not after we had waited 30 minutes. It was about 45 to 50 minutes after we had our first course that we received our second course. I had the chili Reno and my sister had The lamb skewer. The food was absolutely amazing. The chili Riano was gushing with cheese so much flavor, nice and crispy outside. The lamb super tender everything was just on point. We had the tiramisu and the rice pudding for dessert to finish off our three course meal. The food here is amazing. I would come back for that alone and recommend them for that sole purpose. I do not mind waiting for my food, but we should have been told in advance that the kitchen was behind, and if they were sold behind, why were two other tables getting their food before us. Also, the fact that we did not see our waiter for that entire 30 minutes was very concerning and nobody else came to check up on us as well. There's construction going on so we actually almost missed it because it's around the corner from Orange Thorpe. Wow, Nomad is a hidden gem!!!! My friend and I visited on a whim, with a craving for some Mediterranean food. I looked at OpenTable and they had reservations, so I booked something at 6:15 (which, for future reference, Happy Hour ends at 6:00, so try to visit between 4-6 for extra perks!). The location is tucked away off Rosecrans, with ample parking in a structure behind them. It's a cozy space with seating inside or in a charming enclosed patio. The service is A-1. Highly professional, prompt, and attentive. The FOOD is equally fantastic. My friend and I lucked out with a Dine LA special menu, so we got to try a bunch of stuff for an absolute steal. Scallop aguachile: WOW. The presentation was great, but the balance of flavors was great--a nice crisp bite of jalapeño, balanced with refreshing cucumber, citrus, and of course some tasty scallop. It was awesome. Lamb kebab: fantastic! Served with veggies, tzatziki, baba ganoush, pita. The whole plate was filling but not over the top. The lamb was well cooked, tasty, and complemented well with all of the other additions. Coconut rice pudding: so good! I loved the zest of orange here and there. I'm a big fan of both pistachio and coconut so this was a no-brainer for me. Really nice way to end the meal without being overly indulgent. Overall, I'd love to come back and try more things. The steak was well cooked and high quality, and the bread was freshly baked. I asked for extra jus which was flavorful. They we nice to substitute a salad in place of fries. Service was great. This place is pretty great. It's located within some sort of living space with "suites" but unclear if it's a hotel or not. The place feels modern with an outdoor patio, greenery, and wooden studs supporting the frame. The service was good. Timely with water and food. Not much else to say. I was here for the dinela event and so I ordered the scallop crudo as an appetizer, the filet mignon lomo saltado entree, and the creme brulee dessert. The scallop appetizer was excellent with a spicy green salsa and jalapeño slice that complimented the fresh scallop, mint, and cucumber. The avocado didn't pack too much of a punch, but the combination of spicy with a bit of refreshing minty scallop was excellent. The filet mignon lomo saltado was great too. The steak was very tender and the sauce seeped into the rice well. The fries were crispy as slightly damp fries could be and the onion and tomato mixture was good. The only qualm I have is that the flavor profile comes off a bit salty. A little more kick of lime or mint would freshen it up nicely. The creme brulee is a standard one with a nice crispy top with berries and mint. No notes, this is just delicious since I'm biased towards dessert. Fruit and mint accompany the sugary innards of the brulee well. A fantastic experience all in all. Something worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

We ordered some starters and entrées to share and enjoyed everything. Our favorite was probably the steak risotto. It was one of the starter options but can definitely have that as a meal. We tried the roasted butternut squash. It was good but I didn't really enjoy the flavor and it was a little too spicy for our little one to enjoy. We got the roasted lemon chicken and the spaghetti bolognese. We really enjoyed the spaghetti with the little garlic bread served alongside. Great option for kids and adults. The chicken was okay. I don't love roasted half/quarter chickens because I feel like the meat is usually bland and all the flavor is on the skin. Came to Nolan Eatery for Dine LA and wow -- the Bouillabaisse stole the show. A generous portion packed with perfectly cooked seafood, in a rich, fragrant broth so good I didn't leave a single drop. Service was top-notch. Our server Salvatore was friendly, attentive, and spot-on with recommendations. The host kindly moved us to a less breezy table without hesitation, and the chef made the rounds to every table to chat about our meals -- such a rare and personal touch. Bonus points: free self-parking (almost unheard of in LA!) and no annoying "optional" 4% health charge. Casual dress code, fine-dining quality. Nomad Eatery is a great place to grab that uniquely flavored meal. This is a great fusion restaurant that offers a nice selection of cross cultural dining experiences. The food here is all very well prepared and it tastes great. My first experience at this restaurant was that we were driving by. We had been meaning to go here for a while, but it just seemed to be the right time to do that this a.m. I want to make sure we had a seat, so I booked a table for their 11 AM opening on OpenTable. A few minutes later we arrived, we were seated, and we begin our meal. I believe it's interesting to go into a restaurant when they are first opening. By arriving early, you get to see how prepared they are and if they're going to be able to take care of their customers. They did a great job with this. No complaints whatsoever. This restaurant has a very nice interior design. Plus, they have a nice semi outdoor patio space. In this area, they have a very nice fireplace that keeps you warm if it's a little bit cool outside. In terms of parking, Nomad is located right off of Rosecrans. Pull in off the street and the have a large parking structure near the rear of the restaurant. So, parking should never be a problem. Overall, the staff here was very nice, the food and the drink were very good, and the overall vibe of the restaurant is great. read more

I had the Shrimp Papaya Salad as an entree and it was a bit much to eat all by myself. Definitely recommend doing it as a shared plate unless you LOOOOVE papaya salad. We got the cauliflower and hummus appetizers to share and it was amazing. My coworker told me that they are great for happy hour. Was surprised with a beautiful night here for the Valentines Day Pre-Fixe dinner. The service to the food were absolutely amazing and delicious. Not sure what is typically on the regular dinner menu but ALL items we ordered were sooo good. The clam chowder was a stand out for my wife as she likes to try clam chowders. - For entrees first started off with the Filet Mignon Risotto, which was speculatar, with the steak being cooked perfectly & being a good portion. The risotto was not overly truffled, & the mushrooms were just right. 2nd entree was the Chimichurri Steak and Eggs, and again the steak was cooked perfectly! The chimichurri was delicious. - For drinks got the Sour Monkey Beer, which is probably one of the best beers out there. My wife got the Passion Fruit Spritz, but it was disappointing as it tasted more generic rather than like passion fruit. - Also got the Spaghetti bolognese off the kids plates, which was nicely simple & not over-salted. - Our server Alice was awesome & bubbly. When I was old enough to help mom with dinner, I felt an extraordinary amount of responsibility as if the taste and quality of the meal rested solely on my shoulders. My age appropriate dinner prep tasks and Mom's seemingly effortless cooking skills ensured a hearty and tasty meal every night. Judging from the empty dinner plate, Dad's robust Italian palate appeared to be replete and well satisfied any time mom was in the kitchen. That satisfied feeling is how I felt after dining at Nomad. In an instant, I was catapulted back to those amazing meals my mom would prepare for us, and all I can say is: I want more. The menu is packed with shareable, delicious options that won't abuse your wallet and all of which will tantalize your taste buds. The Nomad hummus is velvety smooth except for a sprinkling of crispy garbanzos that add a perfect crunch next to the river of zhoug. We had 2 orders. The grilled salmon esquites was exquisite - perfectly prepared, and had we not shared the dish, I would have devoured the whole thing. The lamb shish-ke-bob was super tender and was wonderfully plated with tabouleh, tzatziki, and baba ganoush. Absolutely delicious. And finally, the chimichurri steak frites were better than any I've had in Paris. Scott explained that his chimichurri isn't the runny/thin type, this one is hearty with substantial texture that clings nicely to wonderfully prepared skirt steak. Dare I say the fries were the star of the show? Maybe because these fries were stupendous, so much so, I'd recommend these as a side with perhaps a drizzle of the yummy chimichurri. The charcuterie board and scallops cevice were equally fantastic, every crumb and drop were consumed. Everything was beautifully plated - Scott understands the concept of eating with one's eyes before the food hits our taste buds. This review wouldn't be complete without mentioning Alicia's friendly and attentive service. She's a gem. We were fortunate to 'dine' with Nomad owner Scott, the conversation was epic. Just grabbed dinner here and honestly, the food was pretty great! you HAVE to get the chocolate soufflé for dessert. Seriously one of the best desserts I've had in forever. We sat on the enclosed patio which was nice and cozy, started with their hummus and fresh pita (can't go wrong there), then we went all out with lamb skewers, steak & fries, and grilled shrimp. Definitely want to give this place another shot because the food was legit, but hopefully on a quieter night becuase it was loud! Like can't hear each other or yourself think loud.
