So if smells like a tourist trap, barks like a tourist trap, and appears like a tourist trap. Then it's probably is! Look I would've given this place 3 stars, but the customer service and wait time was ridiculous. Hear me out, this is my experience from last Saturday. So first it can be challenging to find this place, since the pier has so many level to it. Look for the elevators. When you get there, for the first time, you see a main line, well for what? Then you see other lines, well for what? Then you see an oyster line, oh. In order to determine what each line is for, you have to do independent research. From whom? Well the employee, who do not show case any form of customer service. There were so many people lost and confused. To break it down, each "Order Here" has their own area of what can be ordered by the pound and/or cooked. So not all lines are equal. There is a crab line, seafood boil/pre-seasoned seafood, oyster, clams, I think I saw fish and fried platters, which was the longest. So after much deliberation, an employee managed to wrangle the customers to form a line. Although his mannerism seems like I'm just done with this place. One might consider ropes to further avoid these mundane confusions... I got Ana's seafood boil mix, $99. It came with a lobster, dungeoness crab, peeled shrimp, clams, sausage and potatoes. The employee told me about 10 mins. I'm like okaaaay, only 10? I walked to their souvenir shop, nothing crazy or must haves. Just cheap Chinese things with their name printed on. I return in 10 minutes. The guy doing prepping/expediting the pick order was in a frantic state. Older white male, white mustache. He was running around, mixing orders up, couldn't even tell what customers had what. The employee that wrangling folks came to help him collect himself. So 10 minutes wait turns to 15, 20, then 30 minutes. I had 2 other employees check up on my order, they said it's not ready. Okay. Finally about 35 minutes it's ready. He didn't even call out my order, I had to wave my ticket. The first rule of speed of service, never over sell the time. If it's gonnabe 30 mins plus, say 40 mins, gimme a bs reason, short handed, etc, I don't care!But why would you tell me it'll be 10 mins?! So finally got the food. Flavor was pretty good. Lobster, was okay. I wished the shrimp had the head on. Clams were big. Sausage was good. Potato seemed like the diced ones from a can, they were so small. The crab, however, is the driest. Yep, for a place that exclaims "Quality Seafood," it was kind've of a let down. They taste like the bottom batch of the crab at Las Vegas buffet. You know the batch that sits on the bottom, they don't ever rotate because the employees don't care. So it's just marinating in its own dry filth. The crab was so dry I could put that in an Advil bottle instead of cotton. So now if you ask me, would I come back? Maybe, just maybe. Anytime soon? Nah, not right now. I've only had the pleasure of having the following items below, but I'll be back in the coming years to try more. - Calamari [7.7/10]: regardless of what size you order, the portion is generous. This place doesn't overdue it with the batter and lets the flavor the fresh squid shine - which I adore. Only giving this dish its rating because there are a few Italian spots in Torrance that have my heart when it comes to the best calamari. - Fish Tacos [8.5/10]: Every bite gives a nice crunch of both batter and fish. I've had unpleasant experiences where I've had pockets of crispy batter, here the fish tacos are so great it actually doesn't need much support from lemon and/or tartar sauce. Be sure to order a couple of these bad boys during happy hour for $5 each. - Clam Chowder [8.3/10]: This place hits the mark on the texture of a classic chowder. Admittedly my cup could have used a touch of salt. I would have liked a bigger portion for what I paid for, but if you're in the mood for something hot to compliment your fried seafood - this is worth getting. For my most recent visit, most of my order came in and my garlic fries came in last. Hands down the best fresh seafood place with reasonable prices in California! You have to visit if you're in the area, better than piers in Santa Barbara and San Diego and any in the bay area. They cook all the seafood for you without extra charge. They have any seafood you can think of from crabs to oysters to lobster and sea urchin! Also have the classic fish and chips / paella / steamed clams / mussels. Lots of space to sit and eat, parking is very easy at the pier. Only a few dollars for each hour. I highly recommend the Santa Barbara Female Crabs for 9.99/lb. It frequently comes with crab roe, and the meat is sweeter than the dungeness crab! You can rent hammers for peeling crab and get your money back if you return it. The sea urchins are HUGE and so delicious. The freshest ones you can find. Oysters are on the pricier side, expect 3-4 dollars each. Clam chowder is delicious, lots of clams and toppings. They are crowded on weekends, so come during a weekday night. They shuck them and put them on ice with a side of lemon, horseradish and a few hot sauce options all super fresh very clean flavor. At 5 dollars a piece for something that fresh? It's the best. They have tables and seating very close by, it's in an area with other smaller markets as well. But we had no problem waiting for them to prepare our food. You can pick your seafood and have it steamed fresh on the spot, which makes everything taste incredibly fresh. We tried sea urchin, oysters, and a few different steamed clams, and everything was great for a casual meal by the ocean. The Dungeness crab with garlic butter was definitely our favorite. One of the highlights was the pick-your-own pearl oyster experience nearby. For $15, we opened two oysters and got one pink pearl and one double gray pearl, which made the visit even more memorable. You actually pick the seafood and they will cook it for you, steamed, grilled or even sashimi or ceviche style plates at your service. Price varies depending on the type of seafood and weight, so I chose the clams, steamed fresh and served with a tuna ceviche. Wow, it does makes you feel like you're in the middle of the sea. I had swordfish grilled and showered with fresh lemon and bam, this was glorious to the roof, it tasted like butter running through your throat. I also had the ceviche tuna and shrimp and whoa, the seasoning made it taste like cotton sugar, the one that's rolled into a stick sold at carnivals and fairs? I had a light beer and my Labor Day has never been the same. Parking is about $2 an hour and there's lot of place to see after your dinner. Around a 40 minute wait even on a Monday night. Lobster Lovers Bucket: 5/5. 2 large lobsters, 1lb shrimp, 2 large corn on the cobs, potatoes, chicken andouille sausages, and a huge piece of garlic bread, all for $90 (without tax). This includes a $4 deposit for the bucket that you will get back if you return the bucket. Rice isn't included, I just brought my own but we didn't even end up touching it! The sauce looked watered down, but the flavor was definitely there! The garlic butter sauce is not included, but it's a must order cuz it's one of the best I've ever had. Shrimp was perfectly cooked - super bouncy and juicy. Lobster was overcooked in my opinion but still delicious. The quality for everything overall was very fresh! I recommend. I haven't had it straight in the shell so this was definitely a place to do that at. After ordering, it was about a 10-20 minute wait to get our order but it was worth it. The freshness of the uni is something that every uni lover should try at least once. The price is also pretty decent where I believe it was $22.99lb and each uni was a pound. We were in town for a friend's baby shower and, after a beach day, they recommended this spot as the go-to place for seafood at Redondo Beach. The seafood itself was tasty (I've had better), but the wait was frustrating. I also tried the fish ceviche, which was fresh and delicious, definitely a highlight. The environment was jam-packed, with no real seating available. We had to send people from our group to look for tables and stand near ones that looked close to being finished, just to grab a spot. It added even more stress to the overall experience. The service experience could use some improvement as well. Most of the time was spent standing by the pickup counter, straining to hear whether our number had been called. One group ahead of me waited nearly an hour; thankfully, my order came out in about 30 minutes, which matched the estimate on my receipt. Would I come back? Possibly, but only on a weekday to see if the experience is better. As for a first impression, it left a lot to be desired. The atmosphere is casual, and can get super crowded during peak hours. It's not fancy dining. You walk up to the counters, choose your seafood (crabs, lobsters, shrimp, oysters, clams, and more), pay by the pound, and they'll steam or grill it for you right there. There's usually about a 15-20 minute wait for the food to come out. You can also grab fried seafood favorites like calamari, clam chowder, and fish and chips, plus beer, wine, and micheladas from their drink stands. You can also purchase hot butter and a crab cracker at the drink stand in which you'll get your money back once it is returned. The food is always fresh and we always get the crab, clam chowder, fried shrimp, and clam strips. This time around we also purchased the calamari and french fries, but I think we can do without these the next time. I did not like the coating on the calamari and the fries were really plain. Everything else was great. Seating is first-come, first-serve at the outdoor tables nearby, so it's best to come early or during off-peak times for a good spot. It's super family-friendly and great for groups who don't mind getting messy. Parking is easiest in the Redondo Beach Pier parking structure, which offers quick access and just a short walk down to the market. For a tourist-heavy spot where people are constantly visiting from out of state, the customer service should be much better. I should've checked the reviews before coming. We usually go to Pacific Fish Center & Restaurant on the pier -- better view, better service, and a smoother experience -- but decided to try something new with more options. That was a mistake. I've had far better experiences at the fresh crab and oyster bar in the same building. They were a bit cold at first but took care of our order properly. Well for have the word Quality in your name, doesn't equal quality food. Although the customer service was excellent, the food was not. I decided on poké and a cup of lobster bisque for lunch. The three things I was given: a cup of mushy white rice, a cup of lobster flavored bisque (zero chunks of lobster), and a cup of poké (most of it looked fresh). I've never, in my life, ordered lobster bisque that had no lobster in it talk about a massive let down. I can only imagine what the clam chowder would have been like.....(zero stars for this) The poké had nice flavor, and texture but looked like older chuncks were mixed with fresher chunks. Still, it was better than I expected it to be (3 ) The white rice.... soggy, mushy, no flavor. Hopefully the steamed crab, lobster, shrimp were better, and maybe, next time I ride through, I will try the crab boil....but I'm hesitant to pay that kind of money for the possibility of low quality flavor. As for the ambiance, there are plenty of outdoor covered seating, but the tables were dirty and covered in food particles from prior diners. Came here for lobster month because my mom LOVES lobster and they have a great special every September. The people who work here are AWESOME. Friendly, helpful. The dining area was constantly being monitored and cleaned by the team. The food was... mixed. I got the lobster roll. It wasn't great. Instead of the usual chunks of lobster lightly dressed in mayo, this was shredded and had a consistency almost like a tuna salad. If I had known, would've picked something else. My dad got the fish and chips (a dish he normally loves!). Too much breading and not enough flavor. The fries were good. There was no malt vinegar to go with it. The clam chowder was decent. My mom got the lobster special. She was thrilled with the made to order lobster and shout out to the stand for doing a bit of cracking for her as her grip isn't as tight as it once was. The corn was overcooked. I'd be willing to try again and order differently, but my dad and I weren't thrilled with ours and found Captain Kidds nearby does better on those same dishes.
