Watched Niners Dallas game here last Sunday, and it was so much fun, first time there and I was greeted with enthusiasm and friendly high fives (I wore the right tee shirt: 49ers!). Service was great and everyone seemed to know eachother, and seemed to be from just about all walks of life, I hung out with a CFO, Med School professor, a City Prosecutor and an IT guy.....had a blast and will be back! Whenever I have an event to attend to, my husband just so happens to conveniently schedule a boys night out on the same date. This is mainly to ensure that 1) he does not have to socialize at whatever event I'm going to and 2) that he has a guaranteed ride home as I am almost always the DD. So by the time Friday rolled around and I had just finished up my event, I checked-in with my husband to see where the boys were and he informed me that they were all at a bar called The Nighthawk. As I had never heard of the bar before, I did a quick google maps search and asked friends for a ride over on their way home to which they graciously accepted. For those who have never been to The Nighthawk before, it's on South King Street in between where Smith and Kings was (is?) and Walmart on Fort Street. You can easily miss it if you're not specifically looking for the bar as the outside of the establishment is quite unassuming in nature but once you enter it's a whole other ball game. I don't know what I was expecting from The Nighthawk but I can definitely tell you that immediately upon walking in I felt like I was immediately transported somewhere off island. The overall ambience was inviting with dimly lit lights, brick walls, dark wood accents, and the low mumbles of conversation between different groups of patrons. It was quite a handsome bar that provided an intimate setting so that even though the bar was decently full, you never felt that you were crowded. It also just so happened that the boys were right by the entrance so I didn't have to go far to find them lol. While I can't say much about their drink options since I was the DD and only had a couple of green tea shots, I did end up ordering a Chicago Dog and let me tell you...I was not expecting my mind to be blown once I tried it. For those who are not familiar, Chicago Dogs have a little bit of everything--mustard, onions, relish, dill pickle, tomatoes, peppers, etc. Never have I ever had a better hot dog elsewhere and if you want my honest opinion, had I been in better attire (shorts and a t-shirt), I would've asked the kitchen to keep those dogs coming cause they were THAT good. In addition to their nice bar area, they even have a cute little outside courtyard that's perfect for taking a breather or just some quiet time. I actually stumbled upon it accidentally while on the way to the bathroom and the boys and I had even migrated there for a time since it was a nice night out. Perhaps the best selling point of this bar though is Eddie, the Owner (and bartender?), who was not only kind whenever I would ask for water to keep the boys hydrated but had even told me that the boys were a good time when I apologized for how rowdy they were being. At one point, while on one of my many trips back to the bar area to bring back used cups, Eddie had lightheartedly scolded me and told me to have a good time instead of worrying about the dishes. And even though I didn't listen since I felt bad, he didn't berate me whatsoever. Apparently, Eddie's wife is also the Chef too (and also took care of my boys), so it just makes me love this bar even more. Overall, if you're in the area and looking for a lowkey but great bar with good food, good company, and good drinks, I would highly recommend The Nighthawk. Eddie and his wife have truly made such a beautiful establishment that brings out the very best in their patrons by focusing on the connections you make in life. It's a special connection that I myself value a lot more since the pandemic and something that I can tell you that Eddie and his wife have been able to master through their phenomenal business. read more

If you like awesome bar food, a bunch of good beer options, pretty much any kind of liquor drinks and a fire playlist of music in a clean, brand new bar, then me thinks you're going to enjoy the Nighthawk. The vibe- what you make of it. This place is big and clean inside, with a bar if you want to chat with a cool guy as he makes drinks, a communal table in the middle (if you fancy meeting new friends) or side tables for you and your crew to have a space to yourselves. The food options are classic bar munchies that pair with being a few (or a lot of) drinks in... that a lot of other bars don't offer in Hawai'i. Cheese curds? If you don't know, you better try some. Hot dog dressed to the nines. Tater tots with the fixens. Fried pork belly?! You gotta be kidding me!! Prices are reasonable for Honolulu, which makes me like this place even more. Pau hana TGIF with coworkers. We parked in the municipal parking in the same building for $3 flat rate (enter from Bethel Street). I've been wary of Chinatown over the last 2 years but fortunately this is on the fringe of the scum line. The bar is in a historical looking building and was formerly called Dumb Coq but I never got to go there before it closed. We walked in at 6pm and all the tables were available. Nobody asked for vax status which I don't give a crap about. (People need to take responsibility for their own safety-if you are scared or high risk, stay home). So if you are sensitive about that stuff, don't come here. It seems people who came here also appreciated the relaxed vibe. The bartender was super nice and attentive too. Good selection of liquor. I drank vodka soda and had plain tater tots. The food menu is pretty limited but everyone said it tasted good. We liked the throwback music, lots of James Taylor type songs even Air Supply. I suppose the crowd is 40ish age group. Not a hipster bar. Kinda a new dive bar feeling. We had 6 people (one didn't drink alcohol) it was $219 and we had a bunch of drinks, soju shots (try the green grape), and bar food. Wish they had a litte more variety on food like perhaps hummus or unfried nibbles. Would come back for pau Hana again. read more

Just found one of the BEST spots in Chinatown to eat called the Nighthawk. We passed by it the night before on our way to see the Leslie Jones show at the Hawai'i Theater, and decided to give it a try the next day. Love the ambiance, lots of space, great bar, wonderful and friendly service. What helped make it feel even welcoming for Gen Xs like us was the YouTube 80s culture flashbacks on tv, so we plopped right down at the bar to enjoy. My girlfriend got the bacon cheeseburger, and I got the Italian beef sandwich. This is honest truth: one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time, and my girlfriend's burger was one of the best I've tasted in a long time. Sadly I only got one bite of hers, but I'll definitely order it for myself next time. My sandwich was perfect with the soft bread and juicy meat, with sides of crinkle fries, dip, and giardiniera to add some crunch and spiciness. I took a bite and simply froze in my chair, chewing slowly to allow all that messy goodness hit my taste buds nice and slow. Damn. Good stuff. Worth the price, as there are few meals that deserve that description. Next time I visit I want to try that pork belly. I had the mai tai as well, nice tall tasty drink, but could've used a little more alcohol, which may be a look into some personal issues of mine, so don't let that sway you from ordering one for yourself, it might be perfect for you. Parking is typical in Chinatown, you may get lucky with streetside parking (those meters charge way too damn much and force you to rush), there's also Mark's Garage and the Chinatown Municipal, both being only a couple blocks away. Came here for a happy hour with friends. Very happy with the choice. The menu had something for everyone, and plenty of choices for beer, too. (It is only served in bottles.) We parked at one of the Chinatown garages for $2.50. Easy peasy. The food was really good. We started with a couple of appetizers for the table - cheese curds and brisket nachos. Both were excellent. I'm normally a fan of purist nachos - chips, cheese and jalapenos only. This was the exact opposite - sour cream, brisket, BBQ to go with the brisket and not much cheese. But it worked and was delicious. The curds rocked the table, like mozzarella sticks only better. BF and I split the brisket sandwich and grilled cheese (both were Tuesday specials). We got one with fries, and the other with coleslaw. Brisket was good, not tough at all. Grill cheese was excellent. I don't normally order this out, as I make a good grill cheese, but it had plenty of good quality cheese inside and a nice toasted outside. Fries were very thin, crispy and not greasy at all. Coleslaw had way too much dressing. It was just a mess; it tasted fine, but was so liquidy it almost needed a spoon. read more

My BF and I were walking around downtown to find a dinner spot and passed by Nighthawk. We decided to have a cocktail before heading somewhere else for dinner. SO GLAD WE STOPPED BY! We ended up staying the whole night! Eddie was AWESOME. I knew I wanted a vodka drink and my BF wanted a whiskey drink so Eddie whipped up something delicious for us both! We also sat at the bar right in front of the alcohol selection so we tried shots of different bourbons and whiskeys. It was so fun! And Eddie was super cool and helpful. Service/Environment- Like I said.. Eddie was awesome!!! Every person that came into the restaurant seemed to have been there many times before and knew Eddie. It was nice seeing that he had repeat customers especially since he opened earlier this year when things were becoming uncertain. He also had a great playlist going with some great oldies playing. Definitely not like other bars in Hawaii which I absolutely loved. Food- We ordered the cheese curds, Kung Fu Ham, Chicago Style Hot Dog and Italian Beef Sandwich. Everything was delicious!!! I went to school in Chicago so the food definitely brought back great memories and tasted just like when I lived in Chicago! The cheese curds were probably my ALL TIME fave because you don't see cheese curds too often in Hawaii. Worth the $$$- YES! Everything was SO WORTH IT. Went to this bar after another establishment, and this is where it's at. I don't have any pictures of anything because I was too busy enjoying myself. The inside is nice, clean and spacious, with just enough lighting to see everything and the music was just loud enough to enjoy without having to yell. The food menu is basic but everything was delicious . The food came out hot and fast. And although there was only one bartender, we didn't have to wait long for drinks, like some bars that have three bartenders but take forever to make a drink. Visited The Nighthawk, our favorite bar and grill Tuesday night, August 29th, joined by a good friend. They featured an amazing special, and it truly was. Micki, Chef Extraordinaire, created a new twist on their fabulous cheeseburger. She topped the already loaded giant with Mac and Cheese, which she grilled to stay on top! It was a gastronomic extravaganza, and I can't believe I ate the whole thing! They offer specials on Tuesdays, so I recommend checking their Instagram or Facebook sites to see when they offer this incredible culinary "first" again. The Nighthawk is a gem. Sure, you have to brave parking, but what good thing isn't worth a little work? Besides, I came around 6 pm on a weekday, and street parking was relatively easy to find. Plus, you have a few municipal lots around there as well. It's still relatively new, so there aren't any servers. Just go right up to the bar and order from the bartender. He know what's up. My friend and I came here to seek out the fried cheese curds, since she's from Wisconsin and I've been dying to try them from a restaurant. Lo and behold--they did NOT have cheese curds last night! Something about delivery! Gah! What a disappointment! I almost fell to the floor and cried. Just kidding. Kind of. Well, we weren't going to let that (major) snafu steer us away. Chicago dog - Personally, the hotdog itself was good, but not really worth remembering. The toppings, however, were spot on. I almost wish they would swap out the dog for a different brand or something. The fries that it came with? Out of this world! SO crispy to the last one! I had to stop myself from pressing my fingers down to pick up the last few crumbs since we're being extra careful with germs, yadda yadda. But damn. Great fries. Kung Fu Ham: Fried Pork Belly - Holy hell. The meat was soft, moist, succulent, and flavorful. It's been a while since I've had pork belly cooked to perfection like this. And the cherry on top? The thai chili garlic dipping sauce. O. M. G. It was so yummy I'd cut little pieces of the pork and just dunk it in the sauce and let it sit--I mean let it bathe in there for a good few seconds to soak up all that spicy, garlicky goodness. I wanted to bathe in it myself but that'd be weird, I guess. Anywho, I would go back just for this, but now I have to go back for this AND the cheese curds that they didn't have last night! Very reasonable prices, delicious food, casual ambiance, and stellar service. You know the food is going to be legit when the menu is small. It's deep fried to a crisp and when you sink your teeth into it, it melts in your mouth. It comes with a thai spicy sauce that gives it an extra kick. And breh! It comes with skinny fries, no other place serves skinny fries or shoestring fries. Still hungry? The maxwell street polish sausage hits the spot. Went last night with my husband and a friend. We keep coming back because the place is amazing. The people are the friendliest, the food is great and the prices can't be beat. It's not a fancy place, but it's the kind of place you want to call your neighborhood bar. The bartender, Eddie, is also the owner. He's tended bar at a number of Chinatown favorites over the years. He and his family (sister Mickie, who runs the front of the house, and brother-in-law Edwardo) come to Hawaii by way of Chicago. The bar food is straight out of the windy city. Occasionally Edwardo's mom will have a Mexican themed pop-up menu. If you get the opportunity have her tamale's. She wraps them in banana leaves and they are the best I've ever tasted. My husband and I just came back from our Honeymoon and after randomly stumbling upon this place, we went back twice (once right before we jumped on the plane). After a ton of touristy venues, we were THRILLED to find this local gem - great music, best Mai Tai on the island, and awesome dive-y vibe. Was recommended by a friend to check out this new place in Chinatown. Definitely a hidden gem. We walked in with 80s rock music playing in the background and was greeted by one of the servers who happens to be the owner. Sat us down and gave us a few minutes to decide what we wanted to order. We ordered the Kung Fu Ham, chicken wings, loaded tater tots, cheese curds, a burger and a gyro (yes we were very hungry). The Kung fu ham (deep fried pork belly) was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Served with rice and that chili sauce on the side for the extra kick! The chicken wings also had great crispness to the skin which didn't go soggy from sitting out. We ordered it with the Thai chili sauce but the kitchen also threw in some sriracha bbq sauce too. Tater tots also stayed crispy, loaded with bacon, cheese, chives, and sour cream on the side. The cheese curds were great when they are fresh and hot but need to eat them fast or else the cheese won't be gooey. I personally didn't have the gyro or the burger but by the looks of my friend's faces, I could tell it was delicious. I will definitely need to try those the next time I go. The worker took our order by memory and didn't miss a beat. The food came out in a very timely manner, faster than we had expected actually. They have a nice selection of beers on tap or in bottle along with some seltzers from the local breweries. 5 stars for great service and great food! It's hard to find a place downtown that has an upscale atmosphere but doesn't charge you an arm and a leg for drinks or food. Enter The Nighthawk, where you can get reasonably priced drinks, good eats, and a good looking venue that's just a little tucked away from the other bars downtown. Although the owner says the decor is a work in progress, he mentioned that he's trying to create something different in Oahu, complete with the food menu to match. My favorites in the few times I've come here are the savory Polish Sausage, the hard-to-find-in-Hawaii Cheese Curds, and that DEEP FRIED Pork Belly.
