Don't let the unassuming parking lot front fool you, hidden behind it is this gem. Situation: Went for dinner with a large group of 10. Been trying so hard to find a place that caters to both meat lovers, pescatarian/vegetarian (i.e. I wanna eat Asian but not so oily) alike. Tip: 7 course beef dinner for the former. Cute spot for dinner. There's an area in the back with an open fire and custom built-in round tables that guests can be seated around during a chilly night. I came here with a girlfriend for the first time to try Tamarind Tree's take on a few of my favorite dishes. The server introduced us first to a unique appetizer called: Chả quế cớm xanh ~ Cinnamon pork rice balls. Oh they were so interesting and delicious! It was crunchy and resembled a lot like a deep fried shrimp ball but with tamarind sauce and a hint of sweetness. Really enjoyed that dish. Other dishes we tried: Bánh bèo chén ~ Huế steamed rice plate. I would've given it a 6/10 since there was too much rice batter in each and it lacked the Đậu Xanh. We ordered the Mực nhồi thịt ~ Stuffed squid dish and that was amazing. Very flavorful, good texture and prepared very well. I recommend it. Lastly (I know this is all for two people) we ordered the Bánh cuốn dặc biệt ~ Special steamed roll. I enjoyed this dish the least because the steamed rolls were very bland and dry. The grilled pork really lacked flavor and it was very tough. The Tamarind Tree has been a Seattle gem since 2004. There is no other Seattle restaurant that serves such an expansive Vietnamese menu. The quality has not dropped in the 30 years it has been open. Oh my goodness, where do I begin? So, I went there with my local friend on a recent visit... I always trust his judgment on good Vietnamese food. Also, the menu was gigantic. I had to order the nem nuong cuon (spring rolls with pork sausage) and try the cinnamon pork appetizer (so yummy and different!). Also had the banh xeo and banh trang. It was rainy in Seattle on my day of arrival. When it rains, I always have craving for noodle soup. I checked Yelp for bun rieu and this place popped up. My first impression of the place was that the ambiance was very cute but there was not a single Asian person dining at the restaurant, at least on the day that I came in. Price wise, it was slightly higher than the standard mom and pop place. I ordered the bun rieu and the Vietnamese crepe. The broth was just okay, it wasn't that strong in flavor. The crepe was huge and the shell was crispy but the filling inside were below average. The crepe was $23 which for what it was really overpriced and pretty bland in flavor. The service took forever. This place was pretty disappointing. The only positive thing was the jasmine tea that they brought was very good also there was tons parking which made it a lot easier on a rainy day. read more

Really good Vietnamese food! I came with a big group of around 10 people, and we were able to get seated pretty quickly. Their menu is huge -- I felt like I was scrolling forever through it trying to decide! Since I wasn't too hungry I decided to go with the tofu spring rolls. They came presented nicely and there were a lot more than I expected! The tofu was nicely cooked, the crispy bits added a nice texture, and the rice paper was perfectly chewy as well. I also really enjoyed the dipping sauce. My friend got the braised pork, which I tried and thought it was super good. Tons of flavor, and a bit similar to the Shanghainese version. Service was honestly pretty bad today. We waited about 15 minutes to order and then another 40 to receive our food. They took orders of 3 tables together (including us) and the other 2 tables got their meals a while before us. The appetizer also came with the meals instead of before. For the noodle soup, it was bamboo broth and there were some bamboo shoots with the noodles but nothing else. Duck salad was the star of the show. The cabbage was thinly sliced, duck was tender and well cooked, and the pickled onions were amazing (and I don't even like onions). Took my vietnamese dad here to try it out and I agree with his summary of "too pricey for too small of dishes that aren't even good". We came here specifically for their seven courses of beef but were told they were not preparing it due to being understaffed. Instead we ordered the braised fish pot and the canh chua. The shrimp on coconut rice cake appetizer was not what I was expecting it to taste like but it was novel and well received! The salad and the vermicelli bowl came with tons of fresh Thai basil, mint, and other cut veggies. I love these additional features that complemented the dishes! The lemongrass pan seared scallop salad was a little uninspired with only three tiny scallops sitting askew in the box but the surplus of lettuce for wrapping made this a fun dish to eat with additional fish sauce. My most favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the area. My history with the tamarind tree goes way back when my aunt actually owned it when way when. I spent a lot of my childhood at this restaurant and was sad when she sold it. I'm so glad the new family who took over kept all the food as great as it was, or even better at times! Depends on your taste preferences, some can be average but most can be very great! During my first visit, I had pho, banh beo chen, banh uot dap, hen xuc banh da. The second visit, I had bun bo hue, bun thit nuong cha gio, and flan for dessert. Pho (5/5) - it was very tasty and on point Banh beo chen (4/5) - quite heavier than usual with too much toppings but I enjoyed it. Banh uot dap (2.5/5) - not what I was expecting. The sauce saved it. Hen xuc banh da (3/5) - average in my opinon Bun bo hue (4.5/5) - spicy and tasty! The noodles were too soft (perhaps it was over-heated?) Bun thit nuong cha gio (4.5/5) - a lot of meat for sure! Cha gio is average though. Flan (4- good but quite pricey ($5.50 for one I think) The place is located in a quite sketchy area. Parking can be bad sometimes. The place was hard for me to notice at first. Google maps showed me that I was there but I could not see the restaurant because a car semi blocked the name of the restaurant and then it was located sideways. read more

Very good food here and fast and quick service. I was shocked at the quality here. They are super busy pretty all day it seems, but I got seated quickly. They churn people in and out quickly. Everything was clean, the venue was large, seating for mostly smaller groups but I saw that they do push tables together for larger groups. Dimly lit but pretty noisy, not really a spot for dates. You see all sorts of people here not just Asian. I got the Banh xeo which is a crunchy Viet crepe and it was good! Filled to the brim with proteins like shrimp, beef, squid. The only down side is it was very oily but to be expected as it is fried to get as crunchy as it did. Also got the clay pot fish which was tender and melt in your mouth. Came by here to try some Vietnamese food after having been in Vietnam for 1 month. Seriously craving some Bo Kho (similar to a Chinese Beef Noodle Soup but with a twist) and Bahn Beo (little rice cake thingies with fragrant stuff on top lol). (8/10) - The Bo Kho soup was a lot thinner than I had expected but still very tasty although I feel like it was missing some lemon grass or something. It was a bit TOO similar to the Chinese version. But the meat!! Was amazeballs! Tender! Flavorful! (8/10 for taste, 6/10 for what I was looking for..) - Bahn Beo. Usually served in little sauce dishes, this one was served in deeper tea cups and as a result the rice portion was too thick for my liking. Toppers were phenomenal but the rice was too thick, not fragrant and almost mushy. (3/10) - Che Ba Mau (three bean desert drink). Very tasty! Beans were sweet and coconut milk was very smooth. Growing up with amazing homemade Vietnamese food growing up, I have been curious about Tamarind Tree for awhile and how it compares! Tamaraind Tree has been recommended to me by a couple please and I finally got to try it. It is pretty spacious and there is both indoor and outdoor dining. Came here on a Thursday evening and our party of 4 was seated inside right away. The ambiance reminded me of my childhood because they played Vietnamese instrumental music I remember my mom would play as a kid so it definitely felt like home! Their menu is extensive and has so many Vietnamese dishes that not all Vietnamese restaurants have. From noodle dishes to rice, banh xeo (Vietnamese crepes) to banh beo (steamed rice cakes). I had a hard time picking but decided to go with the Bun Bo Hue which was delicious. It was flavorful, had a good amount of spice, and came with the right amount of meat. It didn't come with the traditional pork blood that most bun bo hue has, but that's fine with me. Their prices are on the higher side and I'd say their portions are decent. Service was pretty good, they got fairly busy a little while after we came in so it took some time to get our water and check when we finished. Overall I had a good experience here and will definitely be back when I want some authentic Vietnamese food! Tamarind tree is located in a strip mall in Little Saigon so parking is free, plentiful, and easy to find.
