So let's talk about Tamarind Tree! I really want to give this place a 4 but ended up giving it a 3.5. As we walk in the restaurant, we were there for a birthday party of 10 we were immediately greeted. The bring over a fresh pot of tea and we wait for the other party. We look at the drink menu first and the waitress mentions that Tamarind Tree is known for their cocktails"top ten in Seattle". We order lychee martini, basil martinis and a cumquat one. The lychee and cumquat were good but the basil was not up to par. Our party showed up and we began to order a bunch of appetizers. From the egg rolls, to spring rolls, beef roll, mushroom satay, egg plant satay. Each was good but had a big hint of lemongrass. For the main course I order the beef salad it was 75 percent cabbage and 20'percent beef . All of the food here was okay. It was a great birthday, decent food and good service. I think I just found my go-to to get my Vietnamese food fix!! For the table we got banh beo and banh khot and they were great!! I'm actually surprised to find these dishes right in Seattle as these aren't the most staple Viet dishes lol. For myself I got hainan chicken because I have been craving that for MONTHS now lool. It definitely satisfied my craving, but I will say I have definitely had better homemade chicken rice and ginger sauce. I love Vietnamese food and Tamarind Tree has been on my list to try for a while, especially since looking at the reviews and pictures! We decided to swing by and check it out on a Thursday around dinnertime (6:45pm) and had not wait time to get seated. As other reviews have mentioned, the restaurant is hidden away behind a shopping center and the parking lot next to it is a bit worn down - Would just note to be a bit mindful if you are planning on driving and parking. The ambience of the restaurant is nice and definitely gives good quiet date night vibes. There were so many options to try as the menu was quite extensive, but I'll review the two dishes that we got below: Cinnamon Pork Rice Balls: The pork rice balls were tasty and had a good strong porky flavor - you can also taste a bit of rice vinegar in the meatballs that complements the pork profile. I am a fan of the popped rice crust as it gives a slightly sticky aftertaste texture sensation that is pleasing and the shredded coconut was also a delicious garnish to the appetizer both in terms of flavor and texture. Broken Rice: There was a good variety of stuff to enjoy on this platter! The pork chop had good barbeque flavor and you could definitely taste the smokiness - only thing that I wished was that it was a bit more hot. The egg cake was tasty and had a light and slightly spongy texture. The pork rind had the most interesting flavor out of everything on the plate, it was slightly spicy profile that you could feel in your sinuses - kind of like how eating wasabi feels. The egg was fried nicely, had a good crust and runny egg yolk. A decent amount of food if you are looking to fill up! For the two dishes above, it cost about $31 - which is a bit on the pricier side, but I would personally say Tamarind Tree is one of the more solid Vietnamese options that I've tried thus far in the Seattle area. This glossy Vietnamese restaurant is tucked back into a far corner of an otherwise rather grungy-looking Asian shopping center. Not your pho and banh mi lunch counter, this has real dishes of real cuisine, well made. I tried an appetizer of baby clams on cracker, which turned out to be a dish of clams mixed with peanuts and seaweed(?) and what else, with a cup of dipping sauce and a very large cracker that you might, or might not, put the clam mixture on. For an entree, beef short ribs, which you usually see at Korean places, but these Vietnamese do them much the same. I ordered this as a rice plate, and that's where the typical Vietnamese counter food style came out, because besides the large hunk of rice there was a salad - different ingredients shelved separately - and a fried egg on top. read more

I ordered the cơm đặc biệt which included most food items in a broken rice dish except they usually serve it with traditional rice. It came with grilled prawn, steam egg meatloaf/ chả trứng, egg roll, chạo tôm, grilled pork or skewer, fish sauce, and vegetables. The egg roll tasted different from usual Vietnamese egg rolls I've tried, it's similar to the one from Costco. The food was just okay. I think the food they cater is more for parties/ the bar and non-Viets. The customer service was good though! What a great first experience eating Bun Bo Hue! My wife and I came on a Friday night, and needless to say, business was a-boomin'! We had to wait quite a while, but the waiters were kind and courteous and gave us periodic updates on when we would be seated. Given the dark days of COVID, it must be hard working a bit understaffed while juggling a packed house, so kudos to them. My wife and I ordered 2 bowls of Bun Bo Hue and the lemongrass beef satay. I love (emphasis on the LOVE) pho, especially on a cold day, but I heard so many great things about the BBH that I felt compelled to try it. The satay? Meh. I could pass on it. It's really gingery, which is fine for some, but not really for me. It was three small pieces of meat, which I think was not worth the price. I'll probably go for the crepe or egg rolls or spring rolls next time. The BBH was great though! Not too spicy, yet had a nice kick to it. The broth was so hearty, and the noodles and meat paired well together to form a delicious heart-warming (literally) experience. My only qualm was that I wish they put a bit more meat. I think I only had 2 slices of beef, so that was a bit underwhelming. But the rest of the dish was great, and it was definitely a hearty meal. Overall, my love and obsession of pho would trump BBH, but Tamarind tree serves a mean BBH, in all the good ways. read more

While located in a sketchy parking lot, this place actually has really nice decorations and ambience, most notably a waterfall. I went here for lunch and was pretty quiet; what's even better is that the menu prices are at least a dollar cheaper for lunch than for dinner, for an exact same dish! A nice touch is that they gave me both hot tea and cold water, instead of having to choose one or the other. The tea is slightly strong, although did not carry a strong tea flavor. Regardless they are both complementary which is great. I got the Bun Bo Hue which has chewy noodles in a slightly spicy tangy broth which has beef and pork slices, shrimp patty, and meatball, all of which make the noodle soup a satisfying and filling meal. The soup is more mild than other Vietnamese places, though my sample size is less than 5. Regardless, it's a nice dish for the cold weather. The menu is so large and they have everything you can think of in terms of Vietnamese cuisine. It's honestly pretty hard to pick a few out of such a menu, but I think from what friends and other reviews say, you can't really go wrong. read more

I haven't been here in forever but have been here several times in the past pre-covid. We picked up to-go orders from here last week because we were craving Vietnamese food and the parking situation here is just a lot easier to manage than other places in Chinatown (they have an actual parking lot!). We ordered a vermicelli bowl with pork and added a fried egg roll and also got the grilled pork fried rice. Both were very tasty and big portions as well! We shared both and ate maybe 2/3 of the fried rice and ate the rest as leftovers the next day. They are also open for indoor dining and I would say this is one of the nicer Vietnamese restaurants with nice decor and dimmer lighting for dinner. Growing up on Viet food, I'm very particular about viet cuisine restaurants. That being said, this food was tasty, filling, and had very bright and rich flavors. Wowowow quite possibly my new favorite viet restaurant in Seattle area. I'm no expert in viet food authenticity but what I love about this place is there's soooo many different viet dishes. I love pho and Bahn mi but I also love that this place offers more than the traditional dishes you see in most viet restaurants. The waiter recommended the seafood noodle soup dish and we also got the shrimp and coconut rice cakes and grilled pork chop rice. All were sooo delicious and the noodle soup was bomb!!! The menu is not very friendly for a person who is trying Vietnamese food for first time. Also, it does not specify that food is going to be ice cold and nothing will even be warm in that entire dish. I ordered veg noodles with fried tofu and felt like it just taken out of a freezer and served to me. Friends ordered chicken satay which were very chewy like a rubber and burnt, pole bowl was average, pho had chewy chicken pieces, Tamarind seafood plate was also below average with burned meat pieces and to top it fried egg roll was so chewy that I started having pain in my gums and came at the time of cheque after main course was done! Although a bit on the expensive side ($14 for 2 spring rolls) , the portions are larger than most other Vietnamese spring rolls you find in the area. The meat is flavorful and well marinated. It comes with vermicelli noodles, fried wonton skins and lettuce inside. The one thing that I wish was different was their sauce. After that, it took another solid bit of time to order - the menu never ends. They have so many options and they all sound delicious. But with the recommendation of the waiter I got the grilled chicken vermicelli bowl. Then it took a solid bit of time to eat because there was so much food. We are out of town just coming back from a Cruise trip. After a week of not eating Vietnamese food we were all ready to have some of our flavors. This place I would have to say service was great which I normally don't expect from an Asian restaurant and all the food was good. We've eaten here multiple times over the years, and always have had a good experience. The menu is extensive with lots of Vietnamese specialties, including some very interesting items. This is way more than just a pho restaurant. The kitchen knows what they're doing! Service is friendly and efficient-and the restaurant is kept nice and clean. Also got the green mango salad with freshly pickled jicama carrot, roasted peanuts, and fresh herbs served with tamarind sauce and grilled chicken; and the duck salad with shredded cabbage, carrot, and fresh herbs, pickled onion, roasted peanuts topped with skinless/boneless duck in house dressing served with ginger sauce. Had lunch here today with my girlfriend and our parents. We used to come here and the prices now are just ridiculous. Service was not great as our female server was not shy about showing her lack of patience while she was taking our orders. And she was rude when we confirmed if we got the right dish. The worst of it is when the bill came and we noticed that there is a mandatory 20% gratuity already included.
