Visited this really cool house-looking diner, that had a sort of retro vibe to it off of 3rd St., in Long Beach. Very delicious food, I went and dined here for the first time a few weeks ago. The service was great, was welcomed right away by the host who also served us, she was quick with the drinks, gave us time to look at the menu and even answered my questions about dishes. I ended up getting the Breakfast Bruschetta, which to me tasted like a parfait on a baguette slice, which was soooo yummy!! It had me wanting more. A group of us went on Saturday around 10:30 am and we had to wait about 20 minutes until the big table was cleared. I ordered the French toast with the caramelized apples... I have to say that it is the best French toast I've tasted. So warm and perfectly sweet... and can you believe I didn't even like French toasts before trying starling diner's French toast? Nice homey ambiance and the staff are friendly and accommodating. There was enough street parking on a Saturday during 10:30-11 am. Just FYI on certain weekdays there is street sweeping. I have to admit, I avoided coming back here for quite some time due to a previous experience. On our first visit we came on a "Fall Back" clock switch day, and being that it opened at 8:00 which is later than a number of breakfast joins, and add an extra hour of sleep on top of that, many people had the same idea to arrive at opening. I remember being seated in the opening group. This business is very, very small. However, we still waited for a good forty minutes before even being served food on that visit. I also had a simple granola with yogurt and berries. Steven recalls having the french toast. I was highly annoyed and did not come back for a while. Steven chose them again a week ago, and I'm glad he did. We should have come back sooner. Despite the fact that I will usually get a savory meal for breakfast, something was telling me to go for the stuffed french toast. My "go to" is usually the mixed berry option, but sometimes I am very much rewarded for trying something "different". While the banana and nutella option was also calling me after the berry option was out, I decided to go with the stuffed french toast with peaches and butter brandy sauce. Needless to say, I "hated" it. In fact, I completely polished the plate, which rarely happens for me. I loved it!! Every bite was full of flavor and cooked to perfection. Steven ordered the apple chicken sausage and eggs. (Sorry I do not remember this item name offhand but you will find it). He added jack cheese. Tip: Only do this is you are a huge cheese fan like I am, and still feel like being charged an extra $1.75 for cheese in your egg. That was a bit steep. I was going to add a side of two pieces of bacon, but not with a $5.99 price tag. I am definitely a fan now and will return to try various menu options. Just know the pricing is a little high with some stuff. We ended up spending $50 after tip for two breakfast items and two iced teas (not refilled). I love that this restaurant is tucked among apartments and homes--gives it a cozy and more local feel (not that Long Beach doesn't already feel that way). Parking is mostly ample. My husband and I shared the berry stuffed French toast, roast beef hash, and a side of lox and avocado for me. Stuffed French toast is delightful! They use a French baguette and what I like is that it is broiled and not fried (makes it SLIGHTLY less heavy). Comes with a delicious vanilla anglaise and plenty of berries. I prefer the cherry version but unfortunately, there's was a shortage at the time I ordered :,( Roast beef hash was delicious too! Though I'm not sure it is technically a hash because it is a patty of meat on top of eggs with accompanying potatoes and bread. With that being said, the meat is fabulously crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The potatoes are also divine--very crispy, tender, and appropriately seasoned. I kept stealing them from my husband's plate. The serving of lox I got for the price was appropriate, though I did feel the amount of avocado I got was a bit overpriced.. So thankful that my Yelp BFF introduced me to this place. The soyrizo scrambled eggs were AMAZING and I am still day dreaming about it. The eggs are perfectly cooked with a nice consistency and the soyrizo was seasoned just right. I also tried the peach french toast which was delicious. This french toast is particularly unique because it is made from a baguette vs from sliced bread so it was able to retain the crispiness. The mascapone inside is a bit tart for me but overall, it's a good dish to try. There isn't a designated parking area for this place so street parking is the only nearby option. I visited this restaurant for the first time on 12/31 and was excited for it to be our New Year's Eve brunch spot. We ordered the smoked salmon and capers crostini to start. When they arrived, my partner immediately commented that they smelled very fishy, and I agreed they did not smell like smoked salmon at all. I brushed off his concern, I figured they just used regular salmon and not smoked salmon and ate them anyway, which turned out to be a huge mistake. A few hours after that meal, I became extremely ill with food poisoning that lasted for the next four days. This was the only meal I had eaten that day. I was miserable and in so much pain that I was nearly brought to tears. Because of this experience, I will never return to this restaurant. If you choose to dine here, I strongly recommend avoiding anything with raw fish it simply isn't worth the risk. I wish the restaurant had opened a fresh package of smoked salmon instead of using old product and putting customers' health at risk. read more

Got to try this establishment on a Saturday afternoon with a friend who was visiting from out of town. You can tell this was a house turned into a restaurant and that's what makes this place more special and family-like. Wait times can be a bit of a weight although, it's worth every bite. I got to try the chorizo bundle. It came in a burrito form so I was able to try the plate by bites. It comes with a side of sour cream so you get the balance of cool and slight spice. I got the "hand carved" turkey sandwich with a side of barley soup: I thought it was going to be actual Turkey but instead I got 2 thick slices of really cheap deli meat which completely ruined the entire sandwich. I ended up returning it and got a BLT instead. The barely soup was way too overpowering with rosemary and was a bit on the sour side. But if you need convincing , here I am, Starling has good food, good vibes, and a decent location. I would also fight a rabid raccoon for those double cream scones! Picked up my BIL who lives a couple blocks away. Decided to walk down and have breakfast. Was seated real quick, and noticed that they were featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Limited seating inside, and a few tables outside also. Thought I would try a few different things. Started with the Bloody Mary. It was delicious. Wonderfully fresh with a perfect amount of horseradish. Beautifully placed crab claw that was perfect. Next we ordered the scones. Perfectly cooked, nice and crumbly. Buttery and delicious. I then decided to order the Soyrizo scramble. I was not disappointed. The Soyrizo was perfectly seasoned and remarkably textured. Virtually indistinguishable from actual chorizo. Potatoes were a nice side, well seasoned and just the right size. Not too thick and not too thin. I would definitely try this place again. Delightful hidden little gem hidden in belmont heights. I decided to try it after driving by it and seeing the patio full of people. We came in and decided to sit outside to enjoy the neighborhood. I love getting the crab cakes breakfast usually, but settled for a scramble this last time since we were both curious about the salmon bruschetta, which was delicious. She got some eggs with meat, I think it was roast beef or something and she said it was delicious. I shared a bit of my scramble with my 3 year old. She also enjoyed one bruschetta bite. What can I say? She's one fancy toddler. We ordered the French toast last as a breakfast dessert and split it. Super bomb! Can't go wrong with that pick, EVER. Parking can be tricky in this neighborhood since it's residential: house all around with a couple apartment buildings. Be prepared for long walks during the weekend. Came here for brunch on a rainy day. Only street parking is available, which could be a headache on a rainy day, but not a deal breaker. It is a small hole in the wall gem in Long Beach. There was no line when we arrived (lucky us). I was told that only bar was available, and took the bar stools. Server was friendly, attentive, and service was prompt. I don't know what has happened but the staff here needs a kick in the pants! The last few times we have waited up to 30 minutes just to get our check. They were busy so we gave them a pass. Today, it was me and my wife and 1 other table of 2! There was more staff than customers and they were spending the whole time joking with each other and ignoring us. My wife literally had to yell across the restaurant just to get some butter after I had tried waving at them for about 5 minutes. I've been going to Starling Diner for more than a decade. When I have out of town guests, Starling is where I've taken them for a lovely breakfast. The food has always been great, as has the service. While I'm not what one would be considered a regular, I have brought a good deal of business their way over the years, and have suggested Starling Diner to several of my friends. So, why the one start review? I've always brought my dog with me, and we've always sat on the patio. Today I showed up with my dog, and was told dogs aren't allowed, even on the patio. I asked "Since when?", and was told they'd had "an incident". I was not given details about what happened, so I can only surmise that someone who had a poorly trained dog either bit someone or got into a kerfuffle with another dog. I'm a former restaurant manager. Some of the restaurants I've managed allowed dogs on their patio dining area. While we did have the occasional issue with a poorly behaved dog, the responsibility fell to the owner for any damages or injuries incurred, and we simply let the owner know that while they were welcome to come back, it would have to be without their dog. Perhaps California laws have changed in recent years, but as far as I knew several years ago, the restaurant was not liable for what a guest's dog did: the owner was. Ban the dog who caused the problem, not all dogs. Sorry Starling Diner, you've lost a customer, and I won't be sending anyone else your way. My trained and very well behaved dog will go to The Attic or Ubuntu from now on. I'll miss your French toast the most. read more

Drive all the way down from West LA to try THIS place only to be told that no dogs (even small, well-behaved pups) arent allowed in their sidewalk dining. Parking was OK but the 'welcome' was such a turn off. We ended up trying Zuzu's Petals just down the street and couldn't have been happier with the greeting, service, and food which ultimately made the drive down worth it. read more
