Our boss treated us to lunch for a coworker's work anniversary and he had heard great things about this place and decided to try it out. It's tucked in a neighborhood and so parking was pretty sparse but we found a spot about a block away. We came around 11:45 am during the week and we were able to get a table right away. Our waitress was very friendly and gave us some good suggestions on what to try. I ordered the roast beef and scrambled eggs-16.50, and my coworkers ordered the chorizo and apple sausage which are both $14.95. Our boss ordered for the table the San Fran stuffed French toast with seasonal berries ($14.99) to share! I really enjoyed my roast beef hash and potatoes on the side. The side of baguette bread I could have done with out since it was a bit harder to eat. The French toast was different with the baguette bread but I really enjoyed it since it didn't make the bread all soggy like other French toast can do( sad we had to share it lol).
Was surprised to find that this little diner was located in the neighborhood would've never thought it would be here. There's plenty of street parking. We came just a little before they close got a symbol, scrambled eggs and corned, beef hash and honestly, I've had better hash didn't like how this one was prepared. It was like a burger, patty and a little too done on the outside for me in greasy. Also didn't like their breakfast potatoes, which were a huge chunks of Yukon gold potatoes felt more on the heavier side. The eggs were cooked nice and fluffy. It also came with a little piece of bread with some butter on the side. My friend ordered their basic breakfast, which is basically eggs, potatoes, and bread and at first both of our plates came out a little cold so they were nice to bring us new plates that were nice and fresh. The staff was very friendly. I probably come here again to try their other items.
You need to order the French toast here. It's the best French toast over ever had anywhere omg. It's stuffed with a custard that's not too sweet but perfectly blends with the bread and it comes out warm almost every time. Also the bananas are super ripe it's so good. Their service here is also excellent they are very welcoming right when you walk in. I've been here a few times never had a bad experience. The inside is cozy small cafe vibes the tables are a little small but that's my only gripe. Other than that's this place is amazing and has a must try French toast.
We were able to arrive just before the brunch rush. We were able to try a few different things on the menu. The breakfast bruschetta was very interesting. So used to savory style but this sweet item was a treat. You can't go wrong with classic bacon and eggs. The banana and Nutella stuffed French toast was good. Not too sweet like some places. The blue crab cake and eggs were delicious by far a fave on the menu.
Cute diner in a house with great service, cool vibe and amazing food. It is street parking only, we cane a Friday at 10:30 and had a slight wait and a small walk but all manageable. We started with the house Bloody Mary which had a crab claw and a kick. The micro greens were cute but not sure they had an impact on the flavor. Big hit and we loved them. Makes me want to try some other options from their cocktail menu. The must-try hyped-up French toast was worth the glory bestowed to it! We got the caramelized apples with brandy butter. Waiter said the berry or peaches are his 2 favorites but we had already narrowed down to apples or the banana Nutella. Of those 2 he said apples so we got it! Short story they are all made with fresh baguette stuffed with mascarpone cheese topped with your choice of fruit and sweet options and fresh whipped cream. I tend to lean more savory breakfast and my hubby likes the sweet so this isn't normally my jam.... But the cheese is a perfect complement to all the sweet and is something I would get again for sure, which says a lot. We got the cheeseburger scramble which was hearty and fillings. Ground beef, cheese, mushrooms and scrambled eggs, simple, easy and yummy. I personally like my eggs salty and needed to add some but my husband thought it was perfect. It was served with yummy whole small roasted potatoes that were crispy but still soft inside, perfectly seasoned IMO. Also a small slice of fresh baguette with butter (and jam on table) was a tasty plus. In fact that bread makes me want to go back for lunch to get a sandwich. All in all it is a new top spot on our list and can't wait to go back and try another cocktail, a new French toast flavor and maybe the crab cake and eggs that I saw walk by. Great find.
Food is delectable! The diner is charming! Service is superb! The staff are hospitable and prices are affordable! EAT HERE! If you're on the fence between this place and another, pick this diner! If you're worried about parking, parking sucks everywhere! Eat here! I had their basic breakfast with a side order of smoked salmon. It was perfect. The potatoes were seasoned well, and the scrambled eggs had a nice chew. Butter on a soft baguette will always be a yes for me! I also had their stuffed french toast with caramelized apples. The best french toast I've had to date. The baguette held up so well against the tender apples and creamy mascarpone. I highly recommend it!
I had this place bookmarked for a very long time. Finally got the chance to try it. I heard that they are very popular for their French toast. So of course we gotta try it. The French toast here was very different from the ones I normally get. They used baguettes for their French toast. We got the Caramelized apples with Brandy butter. The apples were caramelized perfectly. It wasn't so sweet like other places that I have tried. Also, it was nice that there was still a crunch to it. The apples were not super soft and mush like most places. The mascarpone or cream cheese for filling was simple but yummy. Although, they executed this item well I still prefer the original French toast breads. I like my French toast on the softer end. Baguettes required more chewing since it was not as soft. Overall, I don't mind eating it again lol We also ordered the Egg Benjamin. This was a salmon Benedict without the biscuits. I do prefer it this way. They provided a bread on the side instead. It came with some potatoes. I like the potatoes they used, but I do prefer it to be steamed. The exterior was somewhat hard. I got tired of eating it. We tried the blue crab cake as well. It was yummy, but prob something to share. I usually prefer lumps of crabs in my crab cakes. The flavor was good, but we got sick of it quick. Not sure why. Maybe too creamy?? It was good tho. Coffee was good. Normal & fresh Service was ok Parking was not bad.
Cute little diner tucked away on 3rd Street. Find street parking in the area, be sure not to block people's driveways! They have outdoor and indoor seating. Been here a couple times. They have a variety of teas, coffees, sodas annnnnnd ADULT COCKTAILS. I've had their basic breakfast which is really good, their scones are house made so they're very soft in the inside. Their blue crab cakes are good BUT their French toast is AMAZING. Not too sweet, just the right amount of fruit, we got one for the table to share and I'm pretty sure I could have ate that all on my own. They're only open til 3 and it gets crowded on weekends so hurry over!
Delicious breakfast spot. It was super busy Sunday morning. Wait time was around 30 mins, however it's the spot to eat. They serve wine, beer, coffee and fresh drinks. I really enjoyed their water with the mint leaves it made my water really refreshing to drink. The food was delicious and the service was excellent!
We got there early for a weekend breakfast a few weeks ago, just before they opened, we sat inside. Friendly service that was attentive. The place has a cozy, homey cafe vibe. The stuffed french toast is made with a baguette and was exceptional (5/5): fluffy, creamy, pillowy in all the right ways; the version with fresh berries was excellent and enjoyed by both adults & little kids. I had the slow-roasted pork scramble with caramelized onions (4.9/5): flavors were deep and rich, potatoes were flavorful, and almost perfect if the portion was a little larger. One item that missed the mark for us was the Breakfast Bundle (3.5/5) We asked our waiter for an explanation but he didn't really explain that it's basically a very small wrap. The wrap itself was reasonable, but nothing interesting; the simple mixed green salad that came with it was quite nice. The gravy had a slightly weird flavor (too much white pepper, or thyme, or something else?) that made us happy that we got it on the side. Neither adults nor kids really cared for it. Sorry, wouldn't order that one again. Overall we found enough to enjoy that I look forward to coming back to enjoy this nice neighborhood spot again soon.

Here's what we ordered: Chicken and Mushroom Melt - 4/5 - come with house salad or chicken and rice soup. The sandwich was good and baguette bread is soft!! Soup is good as well! Chimichurri Pork Bundle - 4/5 - everything about it is good! Stuffed French Toast - 4/5 - not overly sweet! It was good but enough to feed two people before going into a diabetic come! Review is from April 2024. This is our second time visiting Starling Diner. My husband and I came around 11:30AM on a Sunday and waited about 30 minutes before being seated. The restaurant feels very homey but it's very loud inside.. Service is quick and friendly, our dishes came out quickly as well. We ordered: 1. Starling Cooler: Cranberry juice, orange juice, and sparkling water, this drink was super refreshing. 2. Breakfast Bruschetta: The mascarpone was creamy, berries were sweet, and the drizzle of honey was the perfect topper. I really enjoyed this dish! 3. Roasted Mushroom, Spinach & Monterey Jack Egg Scramble: This dish came with potatoes and baguette. My husband earned brownie points for this find.... Great diner. When you walk in you feel a part of a community and the food reflects it. Has early bird specials until 9am and menu serves dishes that bring you back to home-cooked meals with an updated take. I stayed with the classic breakfast but potatoes were herb roasted. Nice touch! A diner with a wonderful atmosphere, delicious food, and excellent service. My friend invited me there for the first time, and we had a wonderful time. Later, I moved to the next street, and we often go there for breakfast or lunch; it's one of our favorite places in Long Beach. The salmon scrambled eggs, eggs Benedict with potatoes, and fish are all delicious. The diner is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. On weekends, you might have to wait to get a table. I've cycled past this place a gazillion times but finally made a point of stopping in this past Sunday. What a treat. We put our bikes on the rail and sat outside. Table service is quick and friendly. You may need to let them know if you got a table outside as there is indoor dining which gets pretty busy. We ordered the Classic Breakfast, large side of berries and coffee. Simply marvelous. My companion loved the thick applewood bacon and potatoes with their spice blend. I loved the fruit which was fresh and sweet. Coffee was good too. This place is understandably a neighborhood favorite serving breakfast and meals till about 4pm. People just walking over; I think some in their PJs! Family run it's super friendly but also efficient. They don't bog you down with endless chatter while your food gets cold but kindly respond to your questions. I don't eat breakfast out a lot so I'll have to pop back by for lunch. read more

01/20/24 Have not been here in years. Probably close to 8. It has the same local diner/cafe vibe. I assume since it was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, their popularity looks to keep them busy. I got there around 9:45am and there was a party of 2 ahead of me on the wait list. I consider myself lucky because after my friend and I were seated after a 10 minute wait, it's like they put out a free food sign outside or something because the front door was bombarded with people. I wanted to order everything. Especially the San Francisco stuffed French toast. From their website: VOTED "BEST FRENCH TOAST" BY THE OC WEEKLY TAKE FRESHLY BAKED BAGUETTES & STUFF 'EM W/ SWEET CREAMY MASCARPONE-Y GOODNESS, DIP IN CRÈME ANGLAIS THEN BROIL, NOT FRY. The Starling Diner is a much loved neighborhood spot. It's surrounded by cute houses with neighbors out walking their dogs. The feeling you get is homey Americana, first half of the 20th century vibes. The food is immaculate. They have well deserved awards and newspaper articles on the walls. We got the roast beef hash and eggs and the stuffed French toast with berries. As well as the citron press, an effervescent minty lemonade which was exceptionally refreshing. As all the reviews have said the French toast is absolutely fantastic. Sweet and crunchy and not remotely heavy. It's balanced and delicious. I've never had roast beef has before but it was really good and well seasoned. I appreciated that it was crunchy on the edges and tender shreds inside. Portions are good but won't leave you stuffed. Could definitely have added a breakfast appetizer which was a new thing to see on a menu. Breakfast for two was in the $50 range. I came here on a weekday for lunch with a couple of my girlfriends. One of my friends said she had seen an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives that featured this restaurant. I had the BLT with a cup of split pea soup. Both were very good. The bacon was thick cut and the sandwich was well constructed. The split pea soup was delicious. One of my friends did not like her tuna melt. She said it was the cheese, but I wondered if it was the capers. It looked good to me. My friend who chose the salad said it was very good and it looked nice and fresh. The service was excellent. Our server's name was Victoria. Walked my dog over to this hidden Belmont Heights diner. It is literally smack dab in the neighborhood and is such a secret treat. Today I ordered their smoked salmon caper crostini and it is delicious. Now, the salmon is quite 'fishy' so warn whomever you are dining with lol. And 'fishy' means good quality. Time to glaze this place because I have free will. This review is going to end up pretty dookie ngl because there isn't much to say. Starling is really popular and an awesome brunch spot in Long Beach. This place is a safe option I would say if ur looking for brunch spots or somewhere to eat in general. Their hot chocolate is presented super nice and tastes great. The vibe inside is charming and kind of eclectic, like a little neighborhood gem. Service was friendly and relaxed, and the menu's got a solid mix of sweet and savory options. Nothing too crazy, but it's consistent and reliable, which counts for a lot. Parking takes 2 seconds find which is a huge dub since it's on the street. Absolutely a 10/10. I do not have a single complaint about this place. Everything we ate was extremely tasty! We were sat, served drinks and food with no wait time. Everything was fresh and hot. The potatoes were crispy and flavorful. The coffees were beautiful. I highly recommend this place! We had multiple people check in on us that were super friendly.... And not annoying at all! 11/12/23 Best breakfast experience in town! It's like "Cheers" where ...Everybody knows your name...and they're always glad you came . Alfredo gives us this big Kool-Aide smile and says, "Hey! How are you guys doing?! Long time no see!" Then hugs us. There's no feeling like this anywhere else. Of course the food is amazing--our usual order: my Eggs Benjamin (I added a side of apple wood bacon coz bacon makes everything better lol) & Hubby's chorizo & eggs with tortillas + his oat milk latte. This is one of the very few places, too, that I order a cup of coffee because it's always great. Do not forget the basket of scones-this completely finishes this wonderful breakfast meal. Relaxing place to enjoy delicious breakfast with prompt and friendly service. I tried the breakfast Polenta, I was a bit surprised it came out like a nice dessert, ha ha. I enjoyed it very much. My friends had the twice baked granola and omelettes, they liked their dishes as well. It was a reunion breakfast, and we were there for a while (90+ min), the server came by many times to top our coffee which was very nice. Parking: avoid Thursday morning if possible, no street parking on one side of the street due to street cleaning. Mist of my party had to find spaces pretty far away. My husband loves "Triple D" (Diners, Drive-ins and Dives) spots when we travel, and I picked this gem. Cute place with outdoor seating. We were told it was going to be a 15 minute wait, so we walked around the block. Cool neighborhood and neat vibe! When we got back to the restaurant, we were seated quickly, outside. Amazing food choices. Husband picked stuffed French toast and salmon crostinis and I had to try the "amazing" scones that I had read about. It was absolutely delicious. The best scone I ever had with an epic orange custardy spread. The French toast and crostini were pretty amazing too! Great service and fun ambiance. Had breakfast on Thursday December 12th with three of my golf Buddies and we had a great time. Wanted to bring my wife back today Friday and OSCAR would not let me see it by myself and wait for her even though she was in route to have a cup of coffee. He told me that everyone must be present even though there were empty seats all over. When I told him I was here yesterday and they sat us at different times, he said that he could not remember. I then said well can I have a cup of coffee while I wait for my wife and he said yeah but she won't be able to join you. Really wtf? Last time! Last time! Customer service is number one these days. Anybody can make bacon and eggs anywhere but absolutely ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous, that I can't be seated and order for both my wife and her without her present. Never again! Save your money and go elsewhere. Million places here in Long Beach Belmont Shore area and only came here because it was near the golf course ... but again as you can see half the place is empty. Great portion sizes and a lovely ambiance. The drinks were delicious and food came out within 5 minutes of ordering. Couldn't believe how fast service was. Parking was plentiful in the surrounding neighborhood, and we were surprised that there was no wait at 10:30 on a Saturday morning. Scones - came with a lemon sauce and butter. They were clearly fresh and very filling. Texture was a bit more biscuity however. 7/10 Pork sandwich - Came with chimichurri and a salad. The bread was super fresh, and there was a really nice balance of acidity, savory, and richness. 8.5/10 Stuffed french toast with caramelized apples - This was to die for. Very nice restaurant nestled in a cute Long Beach neighborhood. My friend and I arrived around 12 noon on a Sunday. We waited briefly for our table but food arrived fast. As of a month ago, no dogs outside on patio due to an incident they had.

Unfortunately no. Despite what their Yelp page says, it has not been updated to reflect they no longer allow dogs on the patio.
Will you be open on New Year's Day?
What vegan options are there?
They have a granola, or you can order a lot of the salads without cheese or meat on it. Not a ton of options, but there's still ways to work around it.
Do you really have vegan options? The last comment about vegan options was three months ago it stated there were no vegan options but the yelp pg says there are. I will be there in April with a group of friends so just want to know my options?
