I am so happy and mad at myself for just finding out recently that there is an Ubuntu in DTLB!!! How did I not know this all along? I asked them when did they open and they said last year! Last year!!! Nonetheless, if you have been to any of their Ubuntu cafes, especially the one toward Belmont, you would know how great of a cafe this is. The interior is always so beautifully crafted and I love how green every location is! I love all the plants they have at their cafes. The food is good and the coffees are great! I am taking all my coworkers here, this will be the place I will walk to during the week at work!!!

Went for a quick lunch and was super happy with the service and food. Loved the look of the restaurant, very comfy. I got the salmon salad and it was so good! Good portion size. Sauce was delicious! Makes me want to come back for dinner.

Please do yourself a favor & try this establishment! We walked in on a Saturday afternoon 20 minutes after brunch & were WARMLY greeted by Dani. She was soooo kind & walked us through the menu sharing that a few items were her family recipes which is AMAZING. I ordered the breakfast chilaquiles, my man got the avocado toast & the Millionaire bacon. You guys... I've had MANY a chilaquiles in my life & when I tell you this chilaquiles was the best I've had. I got it with braised short rib ugh ABSOLUTE chefs kiss! The chips I could tell were made in house, the short rib was perfectly tender/seasoned, & the egg was perfectly runny. My boyfriend's Avocado Toast was also really good & the avocado was like whipped & fluffy which he loved. AND the Millionaire Bacon WOW she was a thick body & the perfect balance of sweet & savory! Oh lord it didn't even stop there... Dani was so sweet she literally brought us the cheese bread out just to try it AND the guava/passionfruit mousse. I just have to say that is my new favorite dessert ever it was so refreshing but also not overwhelmingly sweet. We sat out on the patio because the weather was perfect but the restaurant itself is so cute & has an intimate kind of feel. I have to say that everything tasted like it was made with love & good intentions & that really came through in the food! We can't wait to come back to try their dinner menu!

Fig and Plum Toast

Met my friend here for brunch right after we flew into LA area for a visit. We were looking for something with vegetarian options and the menu looked very interesting. When I first walked up I noticed the outdoor area looked very cute. There was a covered front area for seating that was covered in vines and would be a really nice place to relax with friends in the summer. Inside there were tall ceilings and a few tables but the interior wasn't super big. I was surprised that you actually ordered at a counter and were given a number, I hadn't picked up on that reading the reviews previously. The menu looked a little pricey so I kind of expected table service. They had very unique brunch options. My friend got their Fig and Plum Toast. It looked good but for $17 I don't think it would have filled me up at all. I opted for their famous scrambled eggs. It was very tasty but it was basically a pretty standard soft scrambled eggs. I think the novelty is that not many places offer soft scrambled eggs. The potatoes that came with it were very crisp which is just how I like them. It was a good dish but I was still a bit hungry after. We also tried some of their drinks which were very good. I would recommend any of their cocktails. The food came within a reasonable time, and they did have waiters coming around to refill our water and take additional drink orders so that was nice. Overall worth a try.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Another great experience at Ubuntu Cafe in Long Beach for Mother's Day brunch! Absolutely love this place. I can't get over the outstanding hospitality you get from the entire staff. The ambiance is super welcoming full of positive vibes. The food was fantastic! And drinks were pretty delicious as well. I'm going to try dinner service next! Two thumbs up!

YES YES AND YES! This place was sooo good I went back twice. Isabella was fantastic and very down to earth. She provided us with some great recommendations based on our preferences. Her kindness and generosity makes you want to go back and the food is a given. Everything I had was delicious and that lavender mimosa was . I also had a salad that with a Dijon mustard vinaigrette that I wasn't too sure about but when I tasted it chefs ! My only regret is that I didn't go back a 3rd time. The atmosphere gives chill vibes mixed with custom kitchen, and a little taste of home. We need one in Texas!

$5 for a small lemonade is crazy, but I was so dehydrated that it was worth it. The server at the register was nice. The place inside though was super cool.

Have been here several times the last week! It's that easy to keep on coming back to. Service is nice, friendly, quick and efficient! Shout out to Sam! You can never go wrong with Ubuntu food - filling, fresh, clean and just overall YUM. My favorite is the avocado toast (brunch) and the ahi tuna salad (lunch) and they also have one of the best flat whites in the neighborhood. Not all coffee shops know how to make an actual flat white and happy to report Ubuntu sure does know how! Welcome to DTLB! So happy you guys are so close now :)

Brazilian Cheese Bread

Located on the Promenade in downtown Long Beach, in the space formerly housing Michael's, Ubuntu Cafe is the second location of this popular cafe. It is a great location, with a beautiful interior, reusing a lot of what made Michael's so nice (including their brick pizza oven). It serves up a focused but eclectic menu, using very good ingredients for a premium overall price. Ubuntu (both locations) are two places that are part of the Resy network of restaurants (another one is the Ordinaire further down the Promenade). Since our credit card gives cash back if you dine at one of them, I've been trying to frequent them. We came from a walk on a Tuesday afternoon around 1, and the place was still relatively busy. Don't let the cafe name fool you....it continues to be a big space, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. It seemed fully staffed. You are requested to order (and pay) from the front counter first. I had already looked at the menu on-line (their website is very good), and knew what I wanted to order...this was going to be our main meal for the day, and was hoping for leftovers. Unfortunately, because of supply chain issues, the new york steak was not available (only told when I excitedly ordered it)...which did put a damper on things. Per Octavio's suggestion, I ended up getting some pop-overs (Brazilian Cheese Bread) instead. Short Ribs Chilaquiles ($25) - I love braised short ribs (galbi-jjim, anyone?) so had to get this, especially with another favorite: chilaquiles. I thought this was good, each tortilla chip covered in a creamy queso fresco (instead of the typical salsa that other places use). Strangely, that made it quite heavy for me. The braised short ribs had been cooked all day, so were extremely tender, and had good flavor. Just wish there was more of it. Side of Parmesan Fries ($7.50) - really well done shoestring potatoes, perfectly deep fried. Could have been served at any cafe with pride. Brazilian Cheese Bread ($14) - it was good, just delivered fresh so was piping hot. They are baked with tapioca flour so gluten-free, and you can get an actual good version from Trader Joe's (my wife craved them from her trip to Brazil a while back, so have gotten them multiple times). When you first rip them open, it almost seems underbaked (i.e. raw), but that's not the case. Service was great, except for the delivery of the cheese bread...it came a good 20 minutes after the first plates had come, and we were done with our food by the time they came. It would have made a great starter. That's one problem with prepaying...can't really cancel these misses without a big hassle. The space is very conducive to conversation, and my wife and I ended up staying a bit longer after we had finished. We got into a nice conversation with Octavio about the short history of the place. It was a pleasant way to end the lunch.

This is such a hidden gem!! We came for Father's day around noon and there was no wait. The inside was very welcoming and there is a patio area as well. The service was so nice - they gave us complimentary flan :)) The menu has something for everyone, and is well priced for Long Beach. The drink menu is vast and unique (alcohol, coffee, juice, etc.). I definitely want to come back for their dinner menu!

Tried the other location in LB over a year ago now, only to have recently found out this just popped up a couple blocks away from me! The owner and staff are always kind, the food is fresh and great quality, and the vibes are just what DTLB needed. Highly, HIGHLY recommend the Spanish Latte (with their homemade almond milk), as it's rich, slightly cinnamony and always perfectly sweetened with condensed milk. A bad latte can easily taste bitter, burnt, or acidic, but Ubuntu's espresso is always so smooth and balanced. Better yet, their almond milk is PERFECTION and not at all watery. It's quickly become my go-to order and easily my favorite treat. ***Bonus: The team even waits to make my latte when ordering ahead until I've arrived to make sure it's hot when I receive it! The ham and cheese quiche is also a go-to order! I'd recommend ensuring it's nicely warmed up before eating (per the owner's recommendation!) as the crust gets crisp and flakey. Love u Ubuntu!! ***Note: Urth Caffe claims to have invented the Spanish Latte, but after trying both multiple times, I can easily say Ubuntu's is FAR superior. (Urth's was extremely acidic, watery, and burnt-tasting.)

Angry Chicken

We only went during Happy Hour. It was good but not quite as good as I thought it would be. Just a few tweaks and they can be really great. The Burger is solid, really delicious, and a great bang-for-the-buck during happy hour. No notes! If anything, just keep it up. It almost reminds me of the burger at Everson Royce Bar back in the days. The fries are good, but please please double fry the fries, so they get really crispy! Serve them with the aioli and ketchup and I'm sold forever. Angry Popcorn Chicken was crispy and nice, but not my favorite. When I hear "popcorn" I expected more Asian/kaarage-style chicken you'd find in a boba shop. This was more like Buffalo chicken with nice crispy bits. But, I'd prefer something with more punchy acidic flavors with some savory crispy chicken--especially if it's called "angry." The aioli it came with was nice though. Crispy Pork Belly isn't that great, sorry, especially when you compare it to a lot of other pork belly dishes--like Filipino Lechon. I wanted the skin/fat to be thick and crispy. It was only a thin layer of crisp. Also the menu listed out that it came with white giant beans, but it was served with lentils. Big WTF?! The mini personal-sized pizza during happy hour was good! Nice doughy, tasty, crispy, and good. Delicious red sauce for the Margherita. Service was good. Atmosphere was pleasant. Overall, this place has a ton of potential and I want to go back for the full dinner and try a few of the main dishes. They all sound delicious. And I wanna try the other location on the other side of LB too, at some point.

Time/date of arrival: Saturday late evening for dinner -Parking situation: garage nearby on 3rd, and street parking -Ordering process/experience: We were seated with server, but other options are available. -Order: We ordered Brazilian cheese bread, summer pea agnolotti, mushroom and kale quiche, and the burratta and beats salad. My dad had the branzino (he's picky! This is his favorite fish). He loved it. You know he likes it when he chuckles at his food and eats in silence. He chuckled for sure :). My mom had the summer pea agnolotti. Her words: "the summer pea agnolotti the perfect summer dish -- veggie forward and delicious." When she tried my dad's fish, her thoughts were: "The bronzino was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and a succotash-like mix of beans that paired well with the delicate fish." My salad was excellent. Perfect proportions. Not a single wilty leaf in sight. My boyfriend shared the quiche with me and it was delectable! Perfect texture! -Food preparedness/freshness: everything was extremely fresh and tasty -Food experience: The food was super fresh, incredibly tasty, good texture, good portions, creative combos, good ideas, and excellent execution. Packaged/plate presentation: as you can see from the pictures, everything was beautiful! Food timeliness: food came out in about 15 minutes. The quiche took a little longer (maybe 5 minutes) but we were informed of this -Order accuracy: order was 100% accurate to what I asked for and it was incredible! Staff customer service: knowledgeable, kind, accommodating (brought my dog a yogurty treat), humorous, and enjoyable -Bathrooms: we didn't use them, but I'm pretty confident they have them Ambiance: it was perfect for family dinner. The restaurant was quiet and chill, but had a fun and exciting energy to it. Vibe/occasion: date night, lunch spot, brunch spot, family dinner. -Cleanliness: this is a fairly new restaurant so everything was spotless. I look forward to seeing them maintain this. -Price/value/serving size: expect to spend $30-$50+ per person. You'll definitely want to try the Brazilian cheese bread. Serving sizes are good. This is a good value, especially for the freshness. Though we were all fighting for the last Brazilian cheese bread! :) Recommend to a friend/come again: yes!! I can't wait to take my girlfriends here!! Take out situation: take out is available Serves alcohol: yes. Dad wouldn't have come otherwise lol Outdoor seating: yes Good for diet restrictions: vegan, vegetarian, gluten free ADA availability- ADA seating availadble

A very welcoming vibe upon entry, we were greeted by a friendly couple who answered our questions about popular drink flavors. Tons of board games, books and wonderfully mellow music helps make the experience feel comforting and inviting. Our drinks were prepared quickly and shouted at the coffee bar for pickup. The presentation was great, but the flavors, out of this world! The Cinnamon Dulce Latte was OUTSTANDING. So good, in fact, that my girlfriend stole it from me! Not to worry, her Blueberry Lavender Latte was also top-notch, with a smooth, not-to-sweet flavor combination. They coated the chicken in a chili rub that gave it a sweet and spicy flavor when paired with their maple syrup. Served on top of a waffle and topped with an egg. I loved it and would probably order again on my next visit. My wife had the American plate which was your classic eggs, bacon, potatoes, and sourdough toast combo. High quality ingredients elevated it beyond your typical diner food. Drinks were great too. I had their house made bloody mary which had a nice kick to it. The vibe has shifted toward a more minimalist coffee cafe aesthetic, and the menu has seen a significant overhaul. The Food & Value: I was disappointed to see the old favorites go. The Chicken & Waffles, previously a staple with three wings, has switched to dark meat only (thighs) with zero substitutions. As someone who isn't a fan of dark meat, that was a major letdown. I opted for the Lemon Pancakes ($21), and while the presentation was stunning, the taste was underwhelming and the portion size was surprisingly small--my son's kids' meal actually had more food than mine. The Silver Lining: The service is still the highlight here. Our server, Jorge, was absolutely fantastic--attentive, kind, and professional. They were also served in a tangy sauce that complimented the vegetable well. My friend's favorite item was the macaroni and cheese. How can you be out of the item highlighted as the special in the middle of the day? When the place is not packed? I tried to order the lobster roll and again, out. I was tempted to order their short rib poutine since in theory it sounded good, but at this point I tried something simple I would hope they have in the kitchen chicken and waffles. The plate came and it looks good. If you look at the picture at the bottom of the chicken you can see a dark something. As I lift my chicken I found a huge burnt piece of breading pictured next. On top of the chicken is green onion I think? Who eats that with chicken and waffles? If I am wrong, a garnish is totally unnecessary for this dish. The chicken was moist. There are spices in the flour breading I can see but hard to taste what it is. The waffle is a hard pass for me. The waffle was crispy which is good, but also thin and dry and I couldn't taste any sweetness until I put maple syrup on it. The syrup came out warm which was nice. It's clear watching the people at the bar this is a local hangout. The chicken and waffles were $19 which if I was in the bay I think it's about right, but I think a little high considering the level of food I got. Supposedly this place is packed specifically on Sundays. The server doesn't know why? I'm not interested to even try to come back for a second chance and just be told sold out of the menu.
