Very cute place with an outdoor seating area in the back. Line gets long super quick so definitely get there early. I didn't originally get a Texas Twinkie, but when I went back to add it, the line was out the door so I figured I'd eat it another time. The food was delicious. We split the two platters between three people and finished everything. Maple glazed ribs and the dip dip chicken were fantastic. The barbacurry beef was a close second. Coulda done without the Texas hot links and the pulled pork to be honest. The sampler was a great way to try everything. The brisket biryani and cauliflower Manchurian were just delicious! The cardamom cornbread was delicious and not as heavy as we thought it'd be. We'd definitely eat six of those in a sitting. I'm not a huge fan of meat on bones, but those ribs, WOWZERS! Lots of tasty burnt pieces and an peppery flavor that had me wanting more. The Foldie was a huge hit, and although the naan was a greasy, it was well-worth the extra calories. The barbacurry beef was a favorite of mine, you must try that coconut curry sauce. I ordered the slaw on the side and loved that they put the sauce in a condiment cup. (Whew, that slaw sauce is spicy, but pairs well with the barbeque). We also really enjoyed the ham & cheese Kolache (bun stuffed with meat and cheese); the ham was so smokey and the bread was so tender. Would love to try the cream cheese Kolache. First thing I noticed was how you order; just like in Texas you'll wait in line until you get to the meat station to make your selection, all meat servings are about 1/3rd lb. Then you move to the sides, drinks and payment. Now find a seat an enjoy. The Brisket, Sausage, and Ribs were amazing. The side were small and very tasty. You must also try the Texas Torpedo which is a Jalapeño pepper stuffed with brisket and cream cheese then wrapped in bacon and smoked. There are more tables in the back. Staff is nice. The food is amazing specifically the brisket. Its so tender. Different sauce to chose from. The other meats are good too, brisket is just my favorite. My only complaints are the price for not much brisket with a single meat combo. I get it everything is expensive so this is an occasional treat because it's just not much meat. I definitely recommend if anyone is craving bbq. I also wish you could order online. I love a good infusion of flavors and it did not disappoint. We tried the brisket, ribs, Texas hot link, dip dip chicken and barbacurry for our meats, then the cowboy Mac and cheese, chammandhi slaw, cardamin cornbread and brisket biriyani! Washed it all down with a few great cocktails, beer and bourbon. For the bourbon lovers they have a great selection! I wish I could tell you what my favorite was, BUT honestly everything was great, but the dip dip chicken and brisket will always get ordered when I go. I personally was not a fan of the sauces, but my husband loved them all. You really don't need the sauce because the rubs and smoke on the meat was so good, so I didn't miss anything not using sauce. On September 24, 2022...Food and Wine published an article entitled, "The Best U.S. Barbecue Cities." After reading over the article, I immediately realized that this article seriously needs an update. Not only should Southern Junction be on their list. But SJ needs to be the featured restaurant on that list. So until Food and Wine, add SJ to their list. I can not take any list they populate seriously. SJ is the best BBQ in western NY, and that's saying a lot for the Buffalo area. This restaurant isn't offering the typical BBQ that you get from home, or any other bbq joint in the city. This bbq is smoked with Indian spices.. They call it a Texas Indian fusion, and it works beautifully. They have different meal combinations you can choose from. The portion sizes, depending on the combo you choose. Can be shared with someone, especially the two meat combo and sampler. It can be a little confusing when you first enter because, there's two different entrances. So while your ordering your food, it can be a little congested and confusing on who's in the right line or not. There's a decent size dining area and a small section to eat outside. All meals come with two sides and a piece of Japanese sweet bread Two meat combo- (3-4 bones) of ribs. The ribs are dry rubbed with a great blend of Indian spices. You do get a choice of (amazing) sauces you can add to them. But you may find yourself using the sauce for other options on your plate. Dip Dip chicken- I normally do not order or enjoy bbq chicken. Well, that was before SJ changed my mind. The spices they use as a rub, is finger licking good. The juiciness and the balanced level of smoke flavor is top notch. This chicken was even more off the chains, when you dip your chicken in the sauces provided. Brisket (chop pieces) biriyani rice- delicious.. just utterly delicious. This review is for the Brunch menu only. A couple of friends and I went on a Sunday morning to celebrate our birthdays. Ordering is cafeteria style, in a line. They do have a full Bar and tables inside and outside. The dining room may have table service, but I am not sure about that. We tried a lot of different things(see pics.) We had heard about this place from friends so we went to check it out. I was a bit disappointed with the brisket. The fat was not rendered quite enough which left it chewy instead of melt in your mouth goodness. The sides were just ok. For the meal, I got the two meats platter with ribs and pulled pork with Mac and cheese and the brisket biriyani as my sides, with the addition of corn bread. I also got the mild BBQ sauce and the coconut curry sauce for my two sauces that came with the meal. Also if you don't know, this is BBQ food with Indian fusion flavors. Starting with the meat, both were very good but I really enjoyed the pulled pork. It was very moist and paired perfectly with the sauces. For the sides, the Mac and cheese was delicious as well as the cornbread, but the star of the show was definitely the brisket biriyani! It was so flavorful and different, and I very highly recommend it, it was probably my favorite part of the meal! Overall, this place was great! My only complaint was that it was absolutely freezing in there! By the end of the meal we were dying just to go outside because of how cold it was. They throw in a piece of house made Japanese milk bread as well which serves as a nice way to break up the heat. My boyfriend got the maple glazed ribs and he loved his too. First thing to mention is something that many reviewers point out - this place is BUSY. No pre-order, so unless you find an open spot at the bar, it's wait in line/counter service/find a table (at least hope to) after getting your food and paying. Went for dinner around 5:30-6 on a Saturday, admittedly not the time to go anywhere for a 'quick' experience - the line was several dozen customers deep & out to the sidewalk, took around an hour from getting there to ordering food, then a few 'purgatory' minutes waiting for a table to open. Worth taking into account - make sure to allow time. Fan of good BBQ + weakness for Indian flavors = I love the menu concept. Generally speaking, the execution was great. The barbacurry beef was exactly what it sounds like & something I'd return to this place specifically for. I feel the same about the brisket biryani, another imaginative fusion executed really well, and the cardamom cornbread. The "dip dip" smoked half chicken was good, spiced coconut oil elevated it, and mac & cheese got the job done as well. Banana pudding for dessert was nothing to write home about necessarily but perfectly fine. I'd probably try the sliced brisket if I get a chance to return. Girlfriend had a notable complaint that both of her meat choices (sausage & ribs) were basically room temperature. I didn't have that issue with mine, but I hear her - if I waited an hour for meat that tastes like it's been on the board for a long time, I'd probably have beef with it too (no pun intended ‍). I'm an occasional Buffalo work traveler that always feels like I'm on a time crunch in the dinner hours, so given the format here, not sure if/when I'll be able to return. The buzz around Buffalo is that this is the "it" place to eat, and the buzz is not wrong. A James Beard award winner is in the house, and our family loved what he's serving up. We'd tried to come once before and the line was hours long (they don't take reservations), so this timed we arrived a few minutes to 4:00, and made it through the door quickly. The place smells amazing even from outside with all the smokers going in the yard, and the sight of all those meats coming in straight to the cutting board was a thing of beauty. Thick, rich, flavorful char on the juicy brisket makes it the real standout of the menu. If you only get one thing make it that! However, we also tried the ribs, the pulled pork, and the buffalo sausage. Every one of them was great, it's just that nothing else really can compete with the brisket because it's so next-level. For sides we got the brisket biryani, brisket beans, Mac and cheese, and cardamom corn bread. Everything was top notch, though I did find the onions in the biryani kind of took over the other flavors, but that's probably a personal preference. You order cafeteria style, and once all your food is loaded onto the tray you can pick your table. The vibe is super casual, with banter back and forth while you order, and country music classics playing while you eat. The people from whom we ordered were pleasant enough, one was even enthusiastic, but the food was so-so, the dishes and flatware were all disposable, the seating was crowded and so noisy we could barely have a conversation. We ordered the texas trinity: ribs, brisket and sausage. The ribs were the most flavorful of the 3 meats, but very fatty so not much meat. I placed an order today at 4:37pm with and estimated pickup time of 5:07pm. My wife went to pickup the food and it took almost an entire extra hour past the expected pickup time so she was stuck waiting for the food. When the food was finally ready your staff forgot to put part of the order in the bag and didn't bother calling me to tell me until my wife was almost all the way home so she had to drive all the way back to get the items your staff did not include. The whole point of online ordering ahead is to save time so people can avoid long waits, but in this instance my wife would have been better off standing in line and not ordering online ahead because she would have gotten the food faster. I've worked food service and retail and I understand things get crazy busy etc., but honestly I don't think you should have online ordering if it cannot run more smoothly for your customers. We're big fans of your restaurant and the awesome food you make, but this poor customer service experience has really soured things for us. The staff was not helpful or at all sympathetic when she went back for the items they neglected to include either. I'm not one to complain in customer service situations and I'm usually the type to give people the benefit of the doubt, but this was really a horrible experience so I hope you will either just get rid of online ordering or improve the turnaround on it so other customers do not have the same poor experience that we did. read more
