This was the first time we've been to Southern Junction. We ended up ordering the 2 meat platter with pork and brisket, milk bread, cardamom corn bread with brown butter, potato salad, coleslaw, a barbacurry foldie and banana pudding. Where do I begin? The food was excellent and the flavor combinations brtween the smoked meats and Indian spices were amazing. I never thought brisket with coconut curry would be so good. The coleslaw is delicious with roasted chopped peanuts on top giving it an extra crunch and nutty flavor. The cornbread was so tasty and not dry, especially when you dip it into the brown butter. The pulled pork has an extra seasoning sprinkled on top that gave it another layer of flavor that complimented the smoked meat well. Both the pork and brisket were moist and tasted even better with the hot bbq and coconut curry sauces. My husband enjoyed the potato salad more than I did only because it had a strong mustard flavor, which is personally not my favorite condiment. That's just my taste buds though! First, I have to say the cinnamon rolls are to die for! I'd absolutely make the 45 minute drive solely to eat the cinnamon roll again. Soft, warm, gooey, the perfect cinnamonyness and topped with drizzle, fresh whip and crumbled pistachios. Drool worthy! You don't have to get "the works" on top, but I highly suggest you do. Now on to the rest of the review. We visited for Sunday brunch, which starts at 10am. We arrived about 10ish minutes early and there were already about 15 people waiting in line before us and several that arrived to be in line behind us before the doors opened. So I suggest you get there early. I was planning on ordering the brunch sampler and making my friends share that with me, but unfortunately it was not on the menu anymore. We each got our own "real" food: a brisket foldie, brisket breakfast sandwich and a burger... And we split the cinnamon roll. I really liked that you could choose between lean or fatty brisket. I went lean for my foldie (their version of a taco) and it was delicious. Perfectly smoked and tender brisket with eggs, pickled onions and curry sauce on the side. My friends enjoyed their food as well. I think we all enjoyed the cinnamon roll the best. There may or may not have been a cinnamon roll ordered to go. One member of our party went with a brisket sandwich, and the other threee (myself included) split a trinity platter, which turned out to be a wonderful introduction to most of their menu. This place continues to do well and rightfully so. The owner has really perfected his skills, and rightly deserves all the awards he has won. My wife and I are fond of the brisket, the brisket biryani, the and everything else. There might be a hint of Indian touch to it, but I think people make it sound more Indian than it is, and its another reason Ive heard people stay away from it. If you want Indian food, go to an Indian restaurant, but good luck finding red meats there. If you want a prefect brisket, perfect spareribs, other meats you would find at a bbq establishment, but with their delicious proprietary dry rub (influenced with a few Indian spices like pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, etc), a sweet and peppery kick to it, and unique flavors, visit this place. We came to Southern Junction for the first time tonight and were extremely impressed. Sometimes highly talked about restaurants disappoint, but this did not! We ordered take out on the website and arrived a bit early (4:15 on a Saturday). We grabbed drinks at the bar and they were delicious! I especially loved the drink I had with smoke infused rye! If you order takeout, note you can go right in and up to the register (you don't need to wait in line). The line formed and was outside the door when we arrived! The food here is insanely good, which was a huge relief. ​My Matt and I went here for our anniversary. We walked up to the meat carver's station with no one in front of us. ​The menu was clearly posted right above the carving station, but my anxiety meant I genuinely couldn't process it in the moment, even though we weren't being rushed by anything. I kept asking the carvers questions that were answered right on the board in front of me, and they kept a very friendly face and powered through with patience. There isn't a ton of space inside, but they have a giant backyard with a bunch of seating. They will slice the meet right there and will give you almost everything or, if not, they'll bring it to you. If you dine in, then to find your seat. It's not a table service kind of place. I am not a massive fan of BBQ food but Southern Junction really changed my mind. I was on a work trip with a colleague and he really wanted to come here. I was a little hesitant, since I am not the biggest fan of bbq, however I am glad I came. This is by far the best bbq I've had in America. I will always be coming here whenever I am in Buffalo and recommend it to everyone. I'm from Texas and this felt like a little slice of home. From the decor to the true bbq, they nailed it. We got the flat iron, the turkey, mac and cheese, brisket biryani, coleslaw, the burger, and bread. The top things I would recommend are the flat iron and brisket biryani. The brisket biryani had excellent flavor and the flat iron melts in your mouth. The rest was very good but those were just my top 2. We went on a Saturday and thought we could beat the line being a little early. We got there at about 3:55 and there was already a line of about 15-20 people. Even being 5 minutes early from opening and only about 20 people in front of us it was about a 40 minute wait. The interior was really small with limited space to order your food so it fit a few people who were ordering and the rest of the line stands outside. The line moves extremely slow. I think they could find a better/more efficient way to order the food. I will say it's nice because you get to watch them cut up your meat, but it is a slow moving line because of it. The people that helped us were very friendly and knowledgeable. After you order your food you find a table. There were outside seats on a patio but in the colder weather we preferred an indoor seat. Luckily we found a seat inside but there's really only enough space for like 7ish groups. Because of the limited seating I also felt pressure to eat quickly so other people could sit inside as well. The small interior was a bit stressful for me which is why I took a star off. But I would absolutely come back for that flat iron meat. Definitely come here if you're craving some good bbq, but just be prepared to come pretty early to avoid a cold wait outside in line and then you don't have to worry about seating as well. read more

In line I was asked "wanna a 'TWINKIE? '" Sure ... Little did I know that was going to be one of the best culinary decisions of my life! The 'TWINKIE' is a BBQ dream version of a jalapeno popper filled with brisket and cream cheese wrapped with a thick slice of bacon and given the BBQ treatment. Smoky and flavorful and OMG goodness. I so wanted more and could not stop thinking about this delicious bite! My brisket was melt in the mouth OMG deliciousness with a perfect smoke ring. Stopped by on a Monday around 5 PM and only had a short wait with just a few people ahead of us. It's a walk-up counter setup, and you can see them slicing the meat fresh right in front of you--which definitely adds to the experience. Prices were a bit on the higher side, but the quality made it worth it. The brisket was the standout--incredibly tender and practically melted in your mouth. This is THE place to make a point to go to. Whether you're in from Canada to try it, coming from a different state, and definitely when you're local. As a BBQ connoisseur, this is arguably the best I've had. The perfectly cooked meat with the unique Indian flare is something to behold. The brisket was melt in your mouth tender; the ribs were succulent and tender (and that maple glaze omg). The dip dip chicken was phenomenal and so moist. The cardamon cornbread just may be my favorite cornbread I've had. Even their house made milk bread was excellent. The Texas Twinkie was the size of Texas itself, HUGE. My wife got 3 (THREE!) banana puddings, she loved it that much. Wow - I'm so glad we finally made it here after multiple recommendations from a bunch of different people. Our only hesitation coming here was that the line used to be out the door so you'd have to wait a really long time to order and find a table. Thankfully we stopped in on a Saturday night after an art show at The Crucible across the street and there were only five people in line, so we didn't have to wait long and were able to find a table no problem. The service here is really unmatched - you can tell everyone loves working here and wants everyone to enjoy their food to the fullest. We hit this spot at around 5:00 on a Friday night and got there just before the big dinner crowd! We waited in line for about 10 minutes before it was our turn to order. We both ordered the 2 meat plate with ribs and flat iron beef (on the recommendation of the server/carver of the meats)... we did get different sides: baked beans with brisket on top, biriani rice with brisket on to, slaw with crushed peanuts and cowboy mac with candied jalapeños on top... We watched while our food was being plated with our mouths watering... I had to wipe away drool... The food was amazing, tender, flavorful and generously portioned... the flat iron was mouth watering and tender, the ribs had a smoky goodness to them and were fall off the bone tender... the sides were really, really good... unique, tasty and even a little quirky ... Last time I was in this location it was still The Black Sheep restaurant. Now, it's all about smoked meat. People love this place. It's actually "a fusion of Texas barbecue techniques and South Indian flavors". Three of us shared the prime brisket, pulled pork, ribs, sausage, chicken and four sides. We enjoyed everything. The brisket was at the top of my companion's rating. The pork ribs had mixed reviews, but we all loved the Dip Dip Chicken. Don't ask about the sausage/kielbasa. It was good, but my Polish standards are very high. The pulled pork was great, especially covered with one of the BBQ sauces. It's worth mentioning that the beef and pork (at least the brisket and pork butt) come from Creekstone Farms in upstate New York. They are proud to offer an exceptionally high-quality product. The Chammandhi Slaw side had a very unique and outstanding taste. Delicious! The food was served on trays. I would have preferred to use a plate, especially if sharing with more than two people, but there were none available. This was my first time at Southern Junction. If there is a next one, I will know better how to handle my order. For example, I am not sure what happened, but we did not receive a slice of milk bread with one of our plates. Also, I really wanted to try smoked cauliflower, but due to someone's mistake or misunderstanding, I got beans instead. It was busy, but not extremely. This is definitely a place to visit. Owner Ryan Fernandez has been recognized and honored by the James Beard Foundation. He was one of the finalists for the 'Emerging Chef' category in 2024. He is continuing to be amazing and can already be seen on the 2025 James Beard Foundation Semifinalist list for the 'Best Chef'! How awesome is that?! What's more, in August 2024, Texas Monthly magazine released a list of the best Texas-style barbecue spots outside of Texas, and Southern Junction ranked sixth in the top ten! Anyone who could put Buffalo, New York on any map of recognition like that is our hero. The bar room had a fun and lively atmosphere. We just walked through it on our way out. Everything about this place is an experience! We came for Father's Day and needless to say no wine was out the door! Strangely, the line took a while and seemed to move very efficiently at the same time. When you get to the front of the line, everyone is amazingly helpful and eager to show you what they have and what the options are you come here knowing you're gonna spend a lot of money and knowing that you're gonna have leftovers for days! BBQ with a unique flavor that just works! Operating hours here are weird so we FINALLY made it, as this place is closed in the middle of the week. Had the Texas Trinity, which is three meats and two sides. Gives you a great idea of what Southern Junction is all about. The BRISKET- Star of the show. It's basically the to gift that keeps on giving. It's perfectly cooked- great temperature, char, and color, with a melody of flavor that provides a mouth watering adventure in each bite. The balance between the meat and fat both coupled with this frosting of sorts on top, becomes a tenderized, savory dream. Definitely my favorite. Not everyone knows how to do brisket so it's usually not my thing, but here, it'll probably be the only meat I order on future visits. The SAUSAGE- very good. Tender and good flavor. I personally didn't like the skin and would pull it off to focus on the meat, other than that, really good. The RIBS- were good. Not the best I've ever had, better than ok. Good flavor. Not falling off the bone, but tender enough. The SIDES- Very Unique...and I think this is where the Tex-ish comes from. Had the Brisket Biriyani- it was so very different with a long grain rice and flavor that surprises in a good way. Can't really compare it to anything. It's its own thing. Amazing taste! This is a bbq spot that offers Texas bbq with an Indian twist and wow it's wonderful. When you walk in, there's workers freshly cutting meats and glazing with sauce. 1st off this place is amazing I was in town looking for some good bbq and this place was definitely that. They were super welcoming and engaging and the food was amazing. Went to Southern Junction for an early dinner this week on a Monday at about 4:30pm and definitely just beat the rush! I'm a fan of BBQ and I just love Indian food, so we decided to check this place out. When you walk in, you go up to the serving area, tell them which meat you want and they plate it up for you after you tell them what meal you're having. You let them know what sides you want, drinks, etc. The food gets put on a cafeteria tray and then you choose your seat. They had fountain drinks that you get yourself.m, you can get water off the soda fountain as well, and then they have a case of some canned and bottled drinks, appeared to be some choices of beer. A relaxed atmosphere, some seating inside and there is a full bar in the front although I did not check that area out at all. The seating outside had both covered and uncovered areas, was a little disappointed they stopped the outside cooking when we started eating though! Was looking forward to the scent of the BBQ. I had the barbacurry beef which is a tender shredded beef with masala spice and ciltatro. I opted for the mild barbecue sauce to add to it because they said the beef was a little spicy, wanted to be safe, however, I didn't find the beef that's spicy. Having said that I am fairly tolerant of spice. I would definitely try the hotter barbecue sauce next time or perhaps the coconut curry sauce. I personally find the combination of barbecue sauce and cilantro very yummy so I really enjoyed this. For my sides I had the cardamom cornbread, which was subtle but noticeable and very moist, which is nice because a lot of times cornbread is dry. Would definitely get the cornbread again. My other side was the cauliflower. I would not get this again. Not that it wasn't cooked well with good flavor, it just wasn't for me. It was a little bit too much smoke flavor, more than I like. The Hawaiian bread was very good. I did not end up finishing it however because between the cornbread and the banana pudding I got for dessert I did not want to eat that much food. Pickles and pickled onion were good as well. I had the banana pudding at home. It was very good. My mother had pulled pork. She said that was very tasty. She really enjoyed the potato salad as well. The coleslaw was slightly too peppery for her, but she's very sensitive to pepper, I ended up eating it instead, and it was very, very good. I would definitely get the slaw again. I broke my arm,so typing this one handed bc it's that important. Just go. Order one of each. Live blissfully. We're texans and the only thing we miss is brisket, tex mex, and family. This place is legit. It reminds me of my favorite, salt lick. We waited for 6 hours for Snows. I'd wait 7 for Southern Junction. Loved the people, the bar, and everything we consumed. My boyfriend brought me here for our anniversary, and it did not disappoint! The only sad part was that they were sold out of ribs and sausage--but that was on us for going around 6 PM. So if you're planning to visit, go early! Also, dress warm (if winter) because the line will be out the door. Thankfully, they have heaters closer to the front. We ordered two double meat sets, and we're so glad we did because it came with a lot of food. We went with the staff's recommendations, and they picked well! If you go, the brisket and coconut curry sauce is amazing and a definite must. One thing I noticed was that even though every table looked occupied when we walked in, somehow, the timing worked out perfectly. People left right as new groups came in, almost like it was all in sync. So don't stress about finding a seat it all works out, and you will get a seat, and great food! read more

So if you're in Buffalo, and you haven't tried this BBQ yet, you're not only missing out, you're behind the times! I said it last time and I'll say it again: This is one of the best BBQs I have ever had. I went in and was fully ready to wait in line but there wasn't a huge wait which I thought was a sign that I was supposed to go. (It was also Halloween so I think I just got lucky everyone else was out and busy) When I got to the front of the line, I already knew I was going to get the brisket again. But I changed up my sides this time. I love the cardamon corn bread I tried once from here so knew to get that and the shells and cheese (gotta bring home some for my son) this time. My wife got the foldie again with the barbacurry and a side of the shells with cheese too. The food is absolutely incredible here. Ryan and his team do a great job with their service and their food prep to make it run smooth and taste delicious. The place was steady with customers and it was nice to see the outdoor patio being used on a warm Fall night and there were plenty of tables available. The bar had some folks in it too and it just felt like a nice cozy spot to eat. Do yourself and your tastebuds a favor. Check out this spot and become a regular.
