Honestly, I'm still processing how good this meal was. I almost don't want to write this because I want to keep this place all to myself, but the food is too good not to share. Delicious Indian inspired BBQ, great cocktails, yummy sides! Bartenders were kind and helpful. Once seated service was very fast. There was a huge line outside and as we sat eating, they continued to run out of a variety of meats which would be disappointing had we waited in the long line only to not get what we wanted! Thankfully, we snagged a seat at the bar and were served promptly! I will say, the 3 meat platter is overpriced if you get brisket and flat iron. They upcharge by $6 EACH and it's not much meat. I'm from Texas and this felt like a little slice of home. From the decor to the true bbq, they nailed it. We got the flat iron, the turkey, mac and cheese, brisket biryani, coleslaw, the burger, and bread. The top things I would recommend are the flat iron and brisket biryani. The brisket biryani had excellent flavor and the flat iron melts in your mouth. The rest was very good but those were just my top 2. We went on a Saturday and thought we could beat the line being a little early. We got there at about 3:55 and there was already a line of about 15-20 people. Even being 5 minutes early from opening and only about 20 people in front of us it was about a 40 minute wait. The interior was really small with limited space to order your food so it fit a few people who were ordering and the rest of the line stands outside. The line moves extremely slow. I think they could find a better/more efficient way to order the food. I will say it's nice because you get to watch them cut up your meat, but it is a slow moving line because of it. The people that helped us were very friendly and knowledgeable. After you order your food you find a table. There were outside seats on a patio but in the colder weather we preferred an indoor seat. Luckily we found a seat inside but there's really only enough space for like 7ish groups. Because of the limited seating I also felt pressure to eat quickly so other people could sit inside as well. The small interior was a bit stressful for me which is why I took a star off. But I would absolutely come back for that flat iron meat. Walking through the short "alley," which adds to the atmosphere we came face to face with BBQ heaven needing to make difficult choices because everything smelled so good! In line I was asked "wanna a 'TWINKIE? '" Sure ... Little did I know that was going to be one of the best culinary decisions of my life! The 'TWINKIE' is a BBQ dream version of a jalapeno popper filled with brisket and cream cheese wrapped with a thick slice of bacon and given the BBQ treatment. Smoky and flavorful and OMG goodness. I so wanted more and could not stop thinking about this delicious bite! My brisket was melt in the mouth OMG deliciousness with a perfect smoke ring. Stopped by on a Monday around 5 PM and only had a short wait with just a few people ahead of us. It's a walk-up counter setup, and you can see them slicing the meat fresh right in front of you--which definitely adds to the experience. Prices were a bit on the higher side, but the quality made it worth it. The brisket was the standout--incredibly tender and practically melted in your mouth. This is THE place to make a point to go to. Whether you're in from Canada to try it, coming from a different state, and definitely when you're local. As a BBQ connoisseur, this is arguably the best I've had. The perfectly cooked meat with the unique Indian flare is something to behold. The brisket was melt in your mouth tender; the ribs were succulent and tender (and that maple glaze omg). The dip dip chicken was phenomenal and so moist. The cardamon cornbread just may be my favorite cornbread I've had. Even their house made milk bread was excellent. The Texas Twinkie was the size of Texas itself, HUGE. My wife got 3 (THREE!) banana puddings, she loved it that much. The small place gives off classical bbq shack vibes, with a nice separate bar room that we will sit at next time. I will say that the order first and seat yourself after order is definitely not the most efficient way, but when you're selling only what you have made for the day I get it. Plus there's no waitresses so it eliminates some overhead. Staff was very friendly and fast. Wow - I'm so glad we finally made it here after multiple recommendations from a bunch of different people. Our only hesitation coming here was that the line used to be out the door so you'd have to wait a really long time to order and find a table. Thankfully we stopped in on a Saturday night after an art show at The Crucible across the street and there were only five people in line, so we didn't have to wait long and were able to find a table no problem. The service here is really unmatched - you can tell everyone loves working here and wants everyone to enjoy their food to the fullest. I took the recommendations of some of the staff and I'm glad I did. The turkey was a real highlight, as were the beans and Mac. We hit this spot at around 5:00 on a Friday night and got there just before the big dinner crowd! We waited in line for about 10 minutes before it was our turn to order. We both ordered the 2 meat plate with ribs and flat iron beef (on the recommendation of the server/carver of the meats)... we did get different sides: baked beans with brisket on top, biriani rice with brisket on to, slaw with crushed peanuts and cowboy mac with candied jalapeños on top... We watched while our food was being plated with our mouths watering... I had to wipe away drool... The food was amazing, tender, flavorful and generously portioned... the flat iron was mouth watering and tender, the ribs had a smoky goodness to them and were fall off the bone tender... the sides were really, really good... unique, tasty and even a little quirky ... Last time I was in this location it was still The Black Sheep restaurant. Now, it's all about smoked meat. People love this place. It's actually "a fusion of Texas barbecue techniques and South Indian flavors". Three of us shared the prime brisket, pulled pork, ribs, sausage, chicken and four sides. We enjoyed everything. The brisket was at the top of my companion's rating. The pork ribs had mixed reviews, but we all loved the Dip Dip Chicken. Don't ask about the sausage/kielbasa. It was good, but my Polish standards are very high. The pulled pork was great, especially covered with one of the BBQ sauces. It's worth mentioning that the beef and pork (at least the brisket and pork butt) come from Creekstone Farms in upstate New York. They are proud to offer an exceptionally high-quality product. The Chammandhi Slaw side had a very unique and outstanding taste. Delicious! The food was served on trays. I would have preferred to use a plate, especially if sharing with more than two people, but there were none available. This was my first time at Southern Junction. If there is a next one, I will know better how to handle my order. For example, I am not sure what happened, but we did not receive a slice of milk bread with one of our plates. Also, I really wanted to try smoked cauliflower, but due to someone's mistake or misunderstanding, I got beans instead. It was busy, but not extremely. This is definitely a place to visit. Owner Ryan Fernandez has been recognized and honored by the James Beard Foundation. He was one of the finalists for the 'Emerging Chef' category in 2024. He is continuing to be amazing and can already be seen on the 2025 James Beard Foundation Semifinalist list for the 'Best Chef'! How awesome is that?! What's more, in August 2024, Texas Monthly magazine released a list of the best Texas-style barbecue spots outside of Texas, and Southern Junction ranked sixth in the top ten! Anyone who could put Buffalo, New York on any map of recognition like that is our hero. The bar room had a fun and lively atmosphere. We just walked through it on our way out. Everything about this place is an experience! We came for Father's Day and needless to say no wine was out the door! Strangely, the line took a while and seemed to move very efficiently at the same time. When you get to the front of the line, everyone is amazingly helpful and eager to show you what they have and what the options are you come here knowing you're gonna spend a lot of money and knowing that you're gonna have leftovers for days! My cousin was in town and wanted to try this place cause she saw it on IG. Even though I live in Buffalo, I have never been to this place before. We went right at opening and there was already a line out the door. We waited about 15 mins. You order and pay at the counter and find a seat. Indoor seating was full by the time we ordered so we just sat outside. It is a cover area outside. It may not look like it's a lot but it was filling. We shared this btw 3 adults and one toddler. BBQ with a unique flavor that just works! Operating hours here are weird so we FINALLY made it, as this place is closed in the middle of the week. Had the Texas Trinity, which is three meats and two sides. Gives you a great idea of what Southern Junction is all about. The BRISKET- Star of the show. It's basically the to gift that keeps on giving. It's perfectly cooked- great temperature, char, and color, with a melody of flavor that provides a mouth watering adventure in each bite. The balance between the meat and fat both coupled with this frosting of sorts on top, becomes a tenderized, savory dream. Definitely my favorite. Not everyone knows how to do brisket so it's usually not my thing, but here, it'll probably be the only meat I order on future visits. The SAUSAGE- very good. Tender and good flavor. I personally didn't like the skin and would pull it off to focus on the meat, other than that, really good. The RIBS- were good. Not the best I've ever had, better than ok. Good flavor. Not falling off the bone, but tender enough. The SIDES- Very Unique...and I think this is where the Tex-ish comes from. Had the Brisket Biriyani- it was so very different with a long grain rice and flavor that surprises in a good way. Can't really compare it to anything. It's its own thing. Also had the Brisket Beans which were good and had unique flavor. Tried my husband's Smoked Cauliflower- it was cooked in onions and peppers, thick cauliflower with a slight kick...,good. Lastly the two BBQ sauces we chose was one that was HOT...like peppers on yes with a slight tang and the other mild, sweeter with a little tanginess as well. We wanted to cross the border back into the US before finding a place to eat. We searched around and found this place with good reviews and wanted to give this place a try. The restaurant is more of a long bar, with the dining area being in the very back. The place is themed after Texas, with the state's symbol and various items like album covers and posters adorning all of the walls. The bar in the front was packed when we went, but it was relatively quiet in the back dining area where we sat. The restaurant is small, though that may be because the place is split up by multiple white walls. We sat at a 4-person table, which was situated next to three green booths. In front of our table was one of the many white walls and beyond it were a few more tables that ranged from 2-seaters to 4-seaters. The restrooms were located in the very back and are dark. We got here on a Sunday and was told that they were serving brunch and that no other items were available. That was fine. We got the Sunday Brunch Trio for $20: Carnitas - smoked pork, chiles, cilantro, orange, red onions The Bird- spicy smoked chicken, spinach, butter chicken sauce and queso TVM Central - barbacurry, masala potatoes and mint sauce Daughter said she liked all three tacos but her favorite was the TVM Central because of the mint sauce. Hubs thought all three tasted similar but he agreed with daughter. He said that the mint sauce separated the flavor from all three of them making it slightly different. The barbacoa was softer. He thought that the Bird was a little overcooked, though. We all got aTexas sized cinnamon roll, which is homemade milk roll with cardamom whipped cream and candied pistachios. Daughter and I loved it a lot. She wanted to keep eating it but she had to stop. LOL. We also got a Brunch Foldie, which is pastrami and kielbasa with salsa, cheddar. Went to Southern Junction for an early dinner this week on a Monday at about 4:30pm and definitely just beat the rush! I'm a fan of BBQ and I just love Indian food, so we decided to check this place out. When you walk in, you go up to the serving area, tell them which meat you want and they plate it up for you after you tell them what meal you're having. You let them know what sides you want, drinks, etc. The food gets put on a cafeteria tray and then you choose your seat. They had fountain drinks that you get yourself.m, you can get water off the soda fountain as well, and then they have a case of some canned and bottled drinks, appeared to be some choices of beer. A relaxed atmosphere, some seating inside and there is a full bar in the front although I did not check that area out at all. The seating outside had both covered and uncovered areas, was a little disappointed they stopped the outside cooking when we started eating though! Was looking forward to the scent of the BBQ. I had the barbacurry beef which is a tender shredded beef with masala spice and ciltatro. I opted for the mild barbecue sauce to add to it because they said the beef was a little spicy, wanted to be safe, however, I didn't find the beef that's spicy. Having said that I am fairly tolerant of spice. I would definitely try the hotter barbecue sauce next time or perhaps the coconut curry sauce. I personally find the combination of barbecue sauce and cilantro very yummy so I really enjoyed this. For my sides I had the cardamom cornbread, which was subtle but noticeable and very moist, which is nice because a lot of times cornbread is dry. Would definitely get the cornbread again. My other side was the cauliflower. I would not get this again. Not that it wasn't cooked well with good flavor, it just wasn't for me. It was a little bit too much smoke flavor, more than I like. The Hawaiian bread was very good. I did not end up finishing it however because between the cornbread and the banana pudding I got for dessert I did not want to eat that much food. Pickles and pickled onion were good as well. I had the banana pudding at home. It was very good. My mother had pulled pork. She said that was very tasty. She really enjoyed the potato salad as well. The coleslaw was slightly too peppery for her, but she's very sensitive to pepper, I ended up eating it instead, and it was very, very good. I would definitely get the slaw again. My boyfriend brought me here for our anniversary, and it did not disappoint! The only sad part was that they were sold out of ribs and sausage--but that was on us for going around 6 PM. So if you're planning to visit, go early! Also, dress warm (if winter) because the line will be out the door. Thankfully, they have heaters closer to the front. We ordered two double meat sets, and we're so glad we did because it came with a lot of food. We went with the staff's recommendations, and they picked well! So if you're in Buffalo, and you haven't tried this BBQ yet, you're not only missing out, you're behind the times! I said it last time and I'll say it again: This is one of the best BBQs I have ever had. I went in and was fully ready to wait in line but there wasn't a huge wait which I thought was a sign that I was supposed to go. (It was also Halloween so I think I just got lucky everyone else was out and busy) When I got to the front of the line, I already knew I was going to get the brisket again. But I changed up my sides this time. I love the cardamon corn bread I tried once from here so knew to get that and the shells and cheese (gotta bring home some for my son) this time. My wife got the foldie again with the barbacurry and a side of the shells with cheese too. The food is absolutely incredible here. Ryan and his team do a great job with their service and their food prep to make it run smooth and taste delicious. The place was steady with customers and it was nice to see the outdoor patio being used on a warm Fall night and there were plenty of tables available. Top 3 BBQ joints I have had in the country and its a lot of BBQ joints tested. The ribs are the best I have ever had....good crisp bark, bite on the bone and tender meat...the perfect bite. The sausage was quality meat ratio with a crisp casing, the brisket was really good and my buddy got the turkey and that was great too, ton of flavor. Sides we had were the Brisket Biriyani, had so much depth in flavor, some nice kick and my favorite of the sides we ordered. The mac n cheese has some sharp flavor to it, which is a huge plus for me, and it was saucy and delicious. My buddy got the brisket beans and they were really good, you can tell the beans arent canned and have a good chew to them. I've been to Southern Junction several times, and I must say that the food is absolutely exquisite. Our party of 4 split two platters, and we still took food home. Here's the set up: 1) You stand in line, no matter what time you get there, but the food is absolutely worth the wait! You can get their early and stand in line until they open, or you can get their after they open and wait until seating is available. 2) You order at the counter and then find a seat. If there are no seats, you can order it to go. 3) Eat the food--amazing! 4) Leave when you're finished so others can have a seat. What to order: 1. Brisket, brisket brisket! This is the showstopper. I have never had better brisket, and I've had a lot of brisket in my life. 2. Brisket biryani. If you like biryani, you will love this. 3. Cardamum cornbread. A unique twist on a Southern staple. 4. White Cheddar Mac n Cheese. A high-quality side. 5. Other meats: The ribs are very good. I'm originally from the St. Louis area, so again, I know ribs. These are juicy, fall-off-the-bone tender! Sauces are served on the side. They are good, but I like the meat flavor itself, so I generally don't use any. The turkey breast was tasty, probably the best I've had (given that most turkey is dry and overcooked). It was perfectly cooked, smokey, and moist (sorry if you hate that word, but it's apt in this case). If I had never tasted the other meats at Southern Junction, it would be a go-to for me, but in comparison to the other meats, it's down on the list, maybe #3. The sausage is also smokey, very good. In short, there is nothing on the menu that I don't like. Now, the ambiance. It's reminiscent of roadside barbecue places in Texas. There's nothing fancy about the decor. Seating is limited, hence the line. Ideally, people eat and leave, which frees up tables for incoming diners. There is also outside seating in warmer months. We've never had trouble getting a table before because you can also sit in the bar and order food. Anyway, I hope you eat at Southern Junction soon and get some of the best food Buffalo has to offer.
