The brisket was tender and had a nice crust of spice. The pulled pork was tender and the curry sauce delicious. I'm not usually a fan of baked bean, but I really enjoyed these. Good thing there were instructions posted but it still was stressful because you didn't know if once you got your food if you would have anywhere to sit, at one point we heard guys in line joking about how good thing the bathroom is big because they might have to eat in there. We finally got our food, when we ordered I said I wanted two meats (chicken and barbacurry beef) and I only got the chicken. It was too chaotic to correct them but it pretty much ruined our experience because then we only tried white meats which didn't show the true capabilities of this place. The shells and cheese were cold. The turkey was cold. The cornbread was out of this world and the pickles and rice were good. We got some cocktails too and they tasted like well liquor for $12 a piece. The hype is real! Best BBQ in WNY. Went on a Friday night stood in line for 20 minutes. You wait in line to get in and order your food which they slice and build your tray of deliciousness in front of you, then you pay and sit. Think cafeteria style. During the wait there was someone that came out to answer any questions. We also spoke to some customers that said they had been there more than 10 times as they lived in the neighborhood. I had ribs and brisket that were smoked to perfection. Sides of Mac n Cheese and brisket beans. They make three different sauces each day. The meats didn't need any and had a nice dry rub. So worth the 20+ mile drive. BBQ is such a regional favorite throughout our country. But this place takes it to the max. The style is " Texish" which for brisket is generally, simply salt & peppered, cooked low and slow and let the quality of the beef flavor shine. Which we felt was a home run. We got 3 each with our order - both of us tried the biriyani brisket rice, and cardamom cornbread and my wife got the smoke/roasted cauliflower and I got the mango slaw. These took a good meal to a whole other level. The rice & the cornbread were awesome. I enjoyed the slaw but I have to admit I'll be getting the cauliflower next visit because it truly hit my flavor spots. The portion sizes were generous and the pickled red onions and bbq sauce were nice flavor enhancers. The packaging was solid. Now in case you haven't already read about it this isn't set up like a regular restaurant we're all used to. First, it has limited days and hours of operation. Next, the menu apparently changes regularly and in order to know what is available you need to checkout their website. You also should place your order as much ahead of time as you can as there's no servers, hosts, bar etc. While this might seem a bit unusual I truly applaud it. Look folks, if you don't already know a great bbq business is a bit harder to run than most as the cooking processes are so long. I've waited in very long (hours) lines only to find out when it's my turn they're out of this or that and usually exactly what I was waiting for. This is the best solution I've ever seen. You know what's on the menu, you pick a date and time that works for you and you'll get exactly what you want when you want it. I walked in and my food was waiting for me fresh and hot. My order wasn't ready exactly when I was there, which I didn't mind at all, but they kept checking and reassuring me that it would be out soon. They even threw in the chicken, which was very spicy. After waiting in line for over an hour, watching them switch food on and off my plate several times before closing it and handing it to me I thought I would go home and eat. to my surprise, they gave me such a small portion of brisket ( which cost $3 extra) for $31 I got 2 rib bones and 1 slice of brisket! not worth it. the atmosphere was loud and noisy and not handicapped accessible,. My husband and I visited this establishment earlier today at 27 Chandler St. It's with a conglomerate of other small businesses in the same building. Signage helps to point you in the right direction, and you can smell the smokey-deliciousness throughout the first floor. Staff is welcoming and attentive, and willing to describe what they have to offer. We ordered: *Beef brisket platter with two sides. We choose brisket biryani and Manchurian cauliflower. *Mesquite smoked chicken with hot bbq sauce on the side *Brisket biryani rice bowl The beef brisket is thick slices of fork tender, juicy, smokey, but not overly so yummy beef. The crust is nicely seasoned, a little spicy and delectable. The brisket biryani rice has bits of the brisket throughout a colorful spiced rice. You can taste the Indie spices such as cumin, cardamom and turmeric in a flakey basmati rice. If you like Indian food, get extra of this rice. It's that worth it! The Manchurian cauliflower is covered in curry-like spices with a strong smokey flavor. I can't pin point if I just simply like it, or love it. It has me a bit puzzled, but it is delicious. I would definitely order it again. The smoked chicken is spicy, smokey, and juicy boneless skinless chicken breast. By itself, it's pretty darn good. But dipped into the hot bbq sauce takes it over the top. The bbq sauce is slightly smokey, sweet, spicy and vinegary all at the same time. If Southern Junction sold their bbq sauce I'd definitely purchase it. And, to be honest, I'm not usually a fan of bbq sauce. But it's that good! The brisket biryani rice bowl has the same thick-cut brisket atop the flavorful brisket biryani rice, but it's paired with pickled red onion, cilantro, a soft boiled egg and a spicy mint-cilantro sauce. If you get nothing else TRY THIS BOWL! The red onion and the spicy sauce pair perfectly with the rice, and the egg has a soft, creamy yolk that makes it a beautiful palate cleanser to the rich brisket. All together, we spent about $50. My food was well packaged for my travels back home. Now the food!! That is where the "WOW" comes in!!!! It was soooooo goooood! I just called the number on the order confirmation and they were out within 10 minutes. I ordered a full rack of ribs, Mac and cheese, chicken, brisket and cauliflower. The brisket and cauliflower were the stars of the show. The brisket was so tender and cut perfectly. The cauliflower was crispy and flavorful. The chicken was juicy as well! The ribs were not the best, I wanted to love them but they were extremely TOUGH. I'm not sure if it's the cut of the meat or they weren't in the pit long enough but I wouldn't order them again. After noticing some of this place's mouth-watering IG posts, I knew I couldn't put off trying it for very long. I've been pretty into any sort of southern style BBQ lately, so the timing of this discovery couldn't have been better. Southern Junction brands itself as "Texish" BBQ. After chatting with the friendly employee while getting takeout, I learned that the owner implements Indian cuisine into more traditional, Texas BBQ. The first thing of note to mention, is that you'll want to keep an eye on their Facebook page or website before planning to get food. The menu changes frequently and oftentimes (but not always), you are advised to schedule an order ahead of time for pickup. Though, when I went last Sunday, they were taking walk-up to-go orders as well. Another thing to mention, is in regards to the location. The address is on Chandler Street, though you'll most easily find it and access it from Grote Street, as it is located in the back of a large building. There is ample parking off of Grote Street. Finally - I'll talk about the food! I can, without exaggeration, say that this was some of the best takeout food I've ever had. Easily a top-5 takeout experience to-date in Buffalo. I got a Sample Platter and a brisket breakfast taco. The taco practically melted in your mouth, one of the best tacos I've ever had (albeit not a traditional one). The platter consisted of brisket, Mac and cheese, brussel-sprouts and a "Texas Twinkie." Now, if you're like me and wondering what a "Texas Twinkie" is, I wouldn't blame you. This wonderful creation is essentially a stuffed jalapeño wrapped in bacon. Yum. Everything to eat was amazing and of a freshly prepared, high quality. What excites me most about this place is their menu, which often seems to offer different and delicious sounding options. We are from Texas by way of Kansas. We grew up eating the best BBQ in the US so we are picky and hard to impress. Southern Junction exceeded our expectations with every dish. The ribs, turkey, and brisket were all tender. The flavor profiles were complex, unique, and delicious. The brisket beans were flavored with a subtle smoke and huge chunks of brisket. The Mac n cheese was deliciously creamy. The Manchurian cauliflower had just the right amount of heat to make it a great compliment to the meat dishes. The cardamom cornbread was off the charts good. Texas-ish BBQ here in Buffalo? Yes! We picked up some brisket, ribs, cauliflower Manchurian and Texas twinkees (jalapeño poppers) this weekend and it was on point! The brisket was tender, well seasoned and did not require sauce! The ribs were huge and flavorful. They did not fall off the bone until I bit into them and they were perfect! We loved the texas twinkees and they were spicy and creamy wrapped in bacon with brisket. Cauliflower was spicy with heat and flavorful. It took us weeks since the ribs kept selling out before we checked the website.... but we got a great Easter surprise by getting ribs this past weekend! We've been to some of the country's best BBQ joints (Oklahoma Joes, Stellar Hog, the Salt Lick), but Southern Junction packs a great flavor profile by mixing in the Indian influence. The ribs had a really great peppered, but caramelized flavor and my favorite part was the textured bark. The cardamom cornbread was super flavorful as were the chickpeas. The Mac and cheese could have beena bit more creamy/cheesy, but I LOVED the kick of the jalapeños. Yum! Pick up has always been great and easy. Just pop the trunk and it comes right out. Amazing!!!
