From the time I was a baby, my family used to go to another Indian restaurant called India Clay Oven l, which sadly closed down when I was a kid after changing owners. Finding this place brought back a lot of old memories because the food was just as good. I even got my ex boyfriend into Indian after getting him to go when they had the lunch buffet and it's a rare treat for certain friends and I as well. For appetizers, I usually go for samosas, paneer pakora, bhajia, or the mixed veggie platter. Favorite actress include Tikka masala, malai kofta, and palak paneer. The menu is at least six pages long and full of unusual choices - all of which sounds great! Very vegetarian and vegan friendly: this place has both a large vegetable section and tofu to sub out any meat choices. If you like fish, it's offered in multiple ways. This location has a meal deal daily $30 for two entrees, garlic naan, and basmati rice. It's a really good price considering you usually pay double that for two entrees! We eat Indian cuisine often, so this is a game changer. We got Butter Chicken Tikka Masala ordered hot. We thought it could be a little hotter, but the meal was still flavorful. India Gate is one of our go-to's for Indian food in Western New York. We never have to wait for a table, and often we're the only ones in there, so for awhile I worried they weren't getting enough business to stay open, but from the orders going in and out I suspect that do a lot of take-out. Located right on Elmwood, not far from Buff state, the place is decorated with statutes and black light art, so not fancy but fun. The menu is expansive but we have our favorites we keep going back to: Biryani, korma, kakhani, the classics, and we have never been disappointed. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get, especially the biryani which is big enough for two people and the naan is downright cheap. read more

I wouldn't recommend this restaurant after traveling for 3 1/2 hours to get to our hotel. We got to this restaurant and got turn away at 9:07pm as dining was closed only take out. Everything we have tried has been delicious, even though I usually stick to my favorites, saag paneer and bhartha saag. They are mouth watering!! I was disappointed with the box lunch I got yesterday. On Tuesday, May 5, India Gate advertised on Facebook: India Gate Featuring New Entrée Paneer Makmali. It will come in tomorrow's Lunch Box order online...along with the photo below of the Paneer Makmali. It was supposed to be the entrée. I didn't think to take a photo of what I received for my twelve bucks, maybe because I was in mild state of disbelief and disappointment, but grabbed the rinsed out takeout box for illustration. Rice was not supposed to be the entrée, but it was what filled the largest space. The reddish space was chickpeas. The greenish space was Paneer Makmali. $11.95. This was the vegetarian box lunch. Although I have eaten at India Gate many times over the years, this had been my first experience with take out from them during this isolation period. Initially, I said to me that I would never again get a box lunch here. But then, to be fair, I would not normally have gotten a vegetarian entrée. So, for all I know, their vegetarian entrées may always be a big bunch of rice and a little bit of the entrée. I will, probably, order a non-vegetarian box lunch--perhaps next week. To be fair. Wow! This food was delicious! I went for the daily lunch buffet (only 11 bucks!) on "snowstorm" Saturday and I have to say me and my group of friends were impressed. The buffet offered plenty of options for both meat and veggie waters and there were delicious mango milkshake and Chai tea drink options too. The Naan gets delivered right to your table top ensure freshness and the staff were more than willing to explain what things were on the menu if you had dietary concerns and my friend asked a few times. Grabbed some takeout from here yesterday! Is it just me or have the portions gotten larger? I grabbed a chana masala, chicken tikka masala and a vegetable samosa (two to an order). I love how much rice they give you with each order and that the rice doesn't clump together. I don't know if it's the oil they put in there or what, but it's just perfect. When you skip breakfast, you might find yourself at an Indian lunch buffet pigging out later in the day. That's what happened to us. The decision to have Indian food for lunch was fast and spontaneous. The price $11.95 was alright. We were seated in the corner booth under a big television. It didn't bother me because the sound was off and I had good view of my partner and the whole restaurant. Generally the ambience was nice and romantic. The food also warmed me up although there weren't any particularly spicy dishes. It was rather all about my company and spices I suppose. Regarding the food, we were not impressed. Everything was basic, predictable but generally tasty. There was mix of vegetarian dishes, chicken and only one kind of beef which was prepared in mild curry. There was extra hot sauce available on the side, but I didn't touch it. No lamb or goat was offered. It would be nice touch to have something different to choose from. Personally after mastering a favorite butter chicken recipe, my excitement to have it in the restaurant wasn't as strong as in the past. The chicken tandoori was great, moist inside and flavorful. The samosas weren't too interesting along with fish pakora, but I accommodated it with the onion chutney and dipped it into delicious raita. One food pan was never refilled, there should have been chicken in yellow sauce with onion seeds. There were also two more chicken dishes; one really sweet in red sauce and one called 'chicken kabob' which was good, but also sweet, unfortunately. I have to admit, the garlic naan satisfied my craving for carbohydrates totally. It was fragrant with butter and garlic, a tasty piece of bread. Good accompaniments to our meal were bottomless chai tea and mango milkshake. With one super sweet ball of 'gulab jamun' I hit my sugar consumption limit of the day and was ready to go. The downside of buffet food is that is not as fresh as when ordered from the menu and coming steamy hot straight from the kitchen to the table. You should be aware and expect that, especially if the place is not particularly busy. I'm not sure when our next visit will be at India Gate, but this is a great spot in the Elmwood area culinary scene. read more

I've been to India Gate a handful of times over the years, and each time I visit I remember why I haven't rushed back in. India Gate is just okay. It isn't bad, but also isn't remarkable. Prices are like most places now, with most meals $15 and up per person. At that price, I hope for a decently pleasing meal, and India Gate barely makes that cut. Last time we were in, I ordered a paneer dish. The paneer was good enough, but was a fairly skimpy portion in the sauce cauldron. So you're mostly getting just sauce and rice, not even any vegetables. So $15 for basically sauce and rice is a tough sell to come back anytime soon, if the sauce isn't super-spectacular. And it wasn't. It was fine, but definitely not markedly delicious. So every now and then we'll likely end up back at India Gate for an impromptu dinner when we are in the area and it is convenient. But we won't go out of our way to eat here. read more

Was craving Indian cuisine and India Gate has some of the best. I brought a couple of my friends for their first time this past Saturday. It was a very quiet evening but the service always seems to be on the slower side, so keep that in mind if you stop in on a tight schedule. I ended up ordering a chicken and mushroom entree while my friends shared a lamb curry dish (they are brave and ordered it spicy) . Ordering naan is a given and the garlic naan is your best bet, it is super flavorful. Check in on Yelp and get a free glass of wine (we chose a Riesling) . Our food came out after 30 or so minutes and thankfully they were in generous portions, we were hungry! The food did not disappoint, I like that India Gate uses white meat chicken and it's tender not dry at all. They really liked the lamb too , and the server brought us more rice upon request. My dining companions tried the green chutney and were not fans of it, but since it was free to try, they were not too disappointed. The final bill was $33 and we had leftovers. If the service was faster and more attentive, this would be a 5 star review. Still my favorite Indian cuisine in Buffalo though . read more

One of my absolute favorite places to come and eat, with a very Zen like atmosphere. The food and staff are always phenomenally awesome. I came here for their lunch buffet and what a great variety of vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian and carnivorous options! The smells are enough to send you into a flavor frenzy, but once you taste the food your mouth and belly will thank you. I'm not going to try and name all the wonderful things I ate, but just know they were DELICIOUS! When you first sit down you have the option to pluck from regular naan or their garlic naan ...go garlic! Their samosas were huge and jam packed with robust and specific flavors. The rice was perfect. Even their chutney was super fresh and amazing. I enjoyed their salad as well ...YES! Even those salad is good, haha. They have a few options for dressing as well ..try them ALL! The chickpea masala, fish, samosas, veggie fritters and the curry were probably my most favorite item in the menu. I have been to India Gate several times over the years. Have had mixed experiences, so this review is based on my last visit. I went on a Tuesday afternoon for the lunch buffet. I had a feeling it was under new ownership from the last time I was there so I was excited to try the dishes. We were seated at the booth and were given the option of garlic or plain naan(an option not available before.) We chose garlic and proceeded to the buffet. The buffet looked delicious! There were 4 appetizers, 2 types of rice, 4 vegetarian curries, 1 chicken and 1 beef curry. Of course they had the usual tandoori chicken and all the accompaniments that go with Indian food. They also offer chai and mango lassi as part of the buffet, which is awesome. I tried everything. The spinach with paneer(cubes of homemade cheese) was my favorite. The creamyness of the spinach and paneer was so delicious with the sharpness and crunchyness of the garlic naan. The chicken dish was delicious as well. Most buffets tone down their recipes to suit an American palate, here it was a nice balance. The Indian restaurants in Buffalo have definitely uped their buffet game. I deducted a star because I didnt see any vegan options for the main dishes. A lot of vegans like to go to Indian restaurants because they can enjoy a hearty meal and not worry about making sure its vegan. So I feel they should have had at least one vegan dish. Also, no lentil dishes, which was odd. That being said, India Gate definitely is among the top 5 and I am sure I will return again. read more

Asked for everything to be vegan and without cilantro. The guy said that can be done. Chana masala, had cilantro and was very salty. Dal, watered down with mixed cilantro. Gobi paratha, smothered in cilantro. Rice, dry. Samosa was the only thing that was decent but greasy. They also included a rice pudding of some sort, it's made of milk (therefore, not vegan). The food was good and plentiful. A little more mild than most Indian food I've had, but still tasty. The paneer chili was good, a little on the sweeter side. They India gate special had a ton of food, would be more than enough for two people and comes with a few pieces of each meat. The overall place is very nice and inviting, you wouldn't know it from the outside because they have curtains up. I will probably stop back and try their lunch buffet. read more

Update: While India Gate still holds a special place in my heart (I have so many happy memories of dinners with college friends there in the early 2000s), either the food quality has declined or my tastes have just become more sophisticated. If you're looking for great Indian, I would recommend Taj Grill in North Buffalo instead - it doesn't have India Gate's prime Elmwood location (it's actually located in a bland strip mall on Delaware), but the food is incredible. India Gate is still solid; it's just no longer my go-to. read more

I LOVE this spot! I went here twice last week and was extremely happy with both meals. The first meal I got the Chicken Tikka and garlic naan and found it unbelievable. I liked it so much, especially the ability to choose spice level, I asked my parents to get takeout when they came up later in the week. I got the Chicken Curry this time and was equally as pleased. This is the worst Indian restaurant I've ever been to. It's shocking that it would get so highly rated, it really shows what a lack of an Indian community there is in Buffalo and how the people there don't know the difference between good and bad Indian food, or restaurants in general. The only good thing I got in this restaurant was the appetizer platter. The rest of what I have to say is the longest list of complaints I've ever had about a restaurant: -The food was extremely bland, Indian food is supposed to be literally the most flavorful cuisine in the world and this food was bland and almost flavorless, the portions that I took home I had to add spices to. -I asked for a dark beer and got a light one -One of my dishes was under cooked and thus some parts were hard and inedible. -1 dish was missing one of its 3 key ingredients, which was one of the reasons I had ordered it. -We ordered multiple dishes that we were supposed to get condiments with but we only got condiments with one of them. I said "Aren't condiments supposed to come with these too?" And the waiter said "yea but its the same thing as that" and didn't bring me more. So when they were gone we had to order more. What a racket, we were ordering a lot of food and it wasn't cheap, as if they couldn't afford to give us the condiments that are supposed to come with the dishes. -The waiter is completely clueless and can't answer a single question himself, and not only that but he is unprofessional as well, and dresses like he works at a biker bar. -The tables all around us were left dirty and it wasn't even closing time or anything, but all the tables around us for almost the entire time we were there were filthy and a real eyesore. The waiter just couldn't be bothered to clear them. And it wasn't even packed or anything! We were one of literally 4 tables! There was a table that left shortly after we arrived and it was left dirty the entire time we were there, which was a long time. -There's no gluten free bread available like there would be at any other Indian restaurant that has breads made of rice and lentil flour and other such flours. And when I asked if they had one of them (utthapam) the owner said he had never heard of it. He runs an Indian restaurant and he said he didn't know what it was! He obviously has no business being in the Indian food business with such limited knowledge! No wonder the food here sucks! -Worst of all, one of the most unprofessional things that has ever happened to me in a restaurant happened here. The waiter actually ate something off of my plate while he was bringing it to me. I literally couldn't believe it. He served it to me while chewing on something he had taken and eaten from my plate! And then spoke to me with his mouth full! I was shocked! This is what I mean when I say that Buffalo people obviously don't' know the difference between good and bad if this restaurant has almost a five star rating. This is a very bad restaurant. The food is bad, the service is bad, there's almost nothing good about it. The appetizers were good but it's not enough to get even one star. I'd give this 0 stars or less if I could. You Buffalo people need to really learn about food and what is good and what isn't, and raise your standards of professionalism. This was my first time visiting India Gate! It was definitely a great decision. The restaurant was clean and orderly. We were seated immediately with a reservation for 10. The smell in the place was heavenly. The food was so dope! I opted for a menu item rather than the buffet, but I kind of regretted it. The buffet was filled with very quality food. I ordered the Chicken Makhani and it came with basmati rice. When our table was finished, I was thinking of asking for more rice since the proportion of how much I ate was off. I've been coming here for about 10 years. I live in Detroit where good Indian food is nonexistent. We come here every Thanksgiving when we visit family. ANYWAY, some restaurants decline over the years. Not India Gate, its actually gotten better. Food and service is fantastic and bonus points for the new black light posters on the refresh.
