That is to say, there's something here for everyone. We came midweek for a late lunch; the restaurant was quiet and beautiful and there were tempting aromas from the kitchen! It just seemed like one of the thousands of Indian restaurants that time had passed by and when I did go in, was met by a shabby buffet table out of business and heavy, almost gothic colors. But, she's been there for decades so assume many locals know it. The indoor decor looks like the original style from maybe the 80s? We were the only eat in diners. They average 150 take out orders a day, but only 3 or 4 tables eat in. Ever since covid, they stopped their buffet due to the takeout preference. We ordered: Paneer Pakora (fried cheese) and Aloo Tiki (friend mashed potatoes) for apps. The India Star special is a nice sampler sizzler. We got chicken vindaloo, saag paneer, and butter chicken with garlic naan. The butter chicken was the favorite dish....despite my youngest being initially deterred by the bright blood red sauce. I was going to use restaurant.com certificate but it's been so long I didn't understand how it worked so I paid out of pocket. I started with lentil soup and gobi pakora (fried cauliflower). My main dish was shrimp madras curry Shrimp cooked with fresh tomatoes, onions, and fiery hot sauce ordered it hot and it didn't disappoint. It was sneak up on you spicy. Service was fine I was the only one dining. Dessert was also delicious Chai tea and rasmalai house made delicate, sweet cheese patties served in sweet creamy milk sauce and garnished with crushed pistachios. The food all came out timely and hot. It was a very good meal. I enjoyed it and plan to return after the season ends. I did notice that they did a large amount of take out always a good sign. Came here on a Tuesday evening for the buffet and definitely enjoyed it. Service was friendly and I was greeted warmly and with a sense of humor upon arrival. Buffet prices are reasonable at around $12.99 per person and the buffet has all that you would expect: butter chicken, tandoori chicken, beef curry, chana masala, matar paneer and more. The buffet comes with either a standard or garlic naan and the naans here are definitely some of the best out of any of the Indian restaurants. Watch out for the spicy sauce. It is hot. This review is way overdue, as this has been our favorite Indian restaurant in Buffalo for years now. They have been a particular staple for us during COVID-19, and I can't say enough good things about them. For one, ordering is always extremely quick. We use Door Dash typically, and food from India Star seems to arrive quicker than any other restaurant, even the ones that are closer and technically "fast food." So while speed isn't my top priority, it's so nice to know that these orders are always coming quick. The food is always packed really well, packed in styrofoam containers and then wrapped well with cling wrap. While I'm not a fan of styrofoam in general, and hope they can eventually transition to more eco-friendly solutions, I'm not going to quibble on that point since we're in "unprecedented times." The food itself is tremendous. The samosas are enormous and the best I've had. My kids tend to default to tandoori or butter chicken, both of which are always terrific, but I've bounced around the menu quite a bit and haven't had a bad entree. Most recently I had Lamb Madrasi, medium spice, which was perfect. The lamb was very tender, and I feel like lamb is a crapshoot at a lot of restaurants. We also like the naan and the onion kulcha, and their raita is thick and creamy. I'm also a fan of their baingan bharta. Last, but not least, they give you enough food to feed an army. I can make a single entree last 3 meals, easily, and we usually end up with more rice than we know what to do with. So not only is India Star reasonably priced, the food is an incredible value. This was my first experience here since I usually frequent another Indian Restaurant. BUT this was in between the few hours that they're closed during the day and I just couldn't wait. I ordered an exact duplicate my fav dish Chicken Biryani with Garlic Naan. Immediately I noticed how much more you got for around the same price as the other one. The flavor was SPICY just how I like it and the chicken was perfect. This version had larger chunks of onions and peppers which we're delish but not nearly enough in it, and it still seemed like something was missing. This is my favorite Indian restaurant in the Buffalo area and one of my favorite restaurants in general. I dine here, or get take-out, pretty regularly. I always feel very welcomed by the woman owner, and I should probably know her name by now. This place feels like a visit home for dinner (I'm hypothesizing because my mom didn't cook). I've had so many wonderful dishes here it would be silly to try and name them all; it would be easier just to point you to the menu. So let's talk about the buffet: for lunch every day and Tuesdays for dinner. There is always a nice selection of [I believe] 10 dishes. Some of them vary and others seem to be staples such as rice, Samosas, Tandoori Chicken, Aloo Gobhi, and Butter Chicken or Chicken Makhani. A smaller station offers a variety of chutneys (try the tamarind), kheer, and a few other selections. The buffet comes with your choice of regular or garlic naan which is outstanding. Useful information if you tend to fall on the fence between spice levels: when ordering from the menu rather than the buffet, they do not hold back on spice here. At most Indian restaurants, I find that I prefer my dishes at medium spice to get what I like. But at India Star, mild is just right for me. read more

Husband had a craving for Indian food, so we decided to do GrubHub delivery. I chose India Star because I noticed they offered dishes that other Indian eateries didn't have. We ordered: - Garlic naan - Bhartha paneer (eggplant with paneer cheese) - Sarson ka saag (mustard greens and spinach) - Jeera alu (spiced potatoes) Delivery was on time, and each item was carefully wrapped to prevent leaks, which I definitely appreciated. Although I generally prefer medium spice level on dishes, I requested mild for all our dishes so we could share with our toddler son. The dishes were mild as requested and tasty. I personally would have enjoyed them more if they were medium spice level, but my son happily partook (not always the case). The one disappointment was the naan, which didn't taste garlicky at all even though I could see the garlic, and didn't travel well from the restaurant, as it was cold and limp by the time we got to eat it. But the naan was still a hit with my bread-loving toddler. For him, I would just get plain naan next time since the garlic flavor was lacking. Just received an India Star order delivered via grub hub. It was quite unfortunate as I was looking forward to trying their Chicken Bryani. I ordered it mild since I was sharing it with my 5 year old son. It was so so spicy, it was completely inedible for my son. Even though I am used to eating spicy food, after a couple of bites, I even had to stop eating it as it started burning my lips And tongue. Upon closer inspection of the rice, I could see little red chili pieces all over the rice. I personally think they made a mistake and gave me a spicy version even though I specifically requested mild. Very disappointed! Per their instructions, we used the menu online at Restaurant.com (we had a certificate from Restaurant.com) and placed a telephone order. We had to go into the restaurant to pick up the order (no curbside delivery) and pay for it. After we arrived home and reviewed our receipt, we saw that we were overcharged $2.00 for one of the 6 items we ordered. We called, but were told that prices had gone up, that the prices online were "10 - 15 years old"! We asked to be reimbursed; the answer was no. We then asked to speak to a manager; we were told he wasn't in. Then we asked that he call us; we were told he would, but a week has gone by and we've not received a call. Their menu on Restaurant.com still reflects the price it did the day we ordered. Given the pandemic, we left a tip that we would ordinarily leave for dining-in, not for take-out. Since our order was almost $50, they got a great (cash) tip for ripping us off. We won't be patronizing them again. read more

I've never eaten at the restaurant but have gone there for takeout multiple times. This place is excellent. The food quality is very good and the spice level seems perfect. The portions are good sized and they always give you plenty of rice! I've tried several dishes now and I have truly enjoyed every single one. I once was involved with a Sikh Girl (total hottie) and a Hindu Girl and a Buddhist Girl at the same time. They all found out about each other because my email password was "indianchickstastelikecurry" which was pretty f***ing obvious if you think about it. The Buddhist was very forgiving, but the other two came at me with knives. So now, and I won't tell you where exactly, but I have what I like to call my little "Scar Of India." This place was named after that incident. And all the while you thought that the "Star of India" was Aishwarya Rai (or Priya?) Edit: Will have to try India Star under new owners before I give them back their 5 star. Have heard lots of negative feedback. This is not bad Indian at all, and as far as Buffalo goes, it's very good. They have a cheap and enjoyable Buffet, and their Chicken Curry and Tandoori are excellent. This is highly recommended, and is probably my favourite Indian place in the area, with Palace Of Dosas (vegetarian) second, and Moti Mahal a distant third, Kebab & Curry in fourth. India Gate & Star of India are the same mediocre restaurant, and Tandoori's is overpriced and underwhelming. This place is named after the new Ford Curry, it's amazing for getting from Ahmadabad to Bombay to Calcutta to Delhi and so on. It's being dubbed the "Car Of India". The service is absolutely lovely! They are so friendly... both the guy and the girl are adorable and warm, genuine people, which is refreshing. They are the very definition of family owned, and I am really delighted they are still here after all this time. They were the first Indian I ever tried when I first came to Buffalo. It's hard for me to rate Indian restaurants in America highly because I grew up in England and go back sometimes, where the Indian food is so vastly superior and different, that it can honestly not even be called the same cuisine. I think it's fair to say I am in love with the English version of Indian more than the Indian version of Indian (which you can get in Jackson Heights, Queens NYC), and the Americanized version (which is exemplified by Taste Of India and similar establishments). If this place was in England it would get a 3. Or maybe a 4 for being such nice people. But by American standards, it's one of the best you'll find. Canadian standards of Indian food are slightly higher, as are those in Jackson Heights. Sometimes the food here is lukewarm if you get here really late right before they close. At those times, the name becomes "Blah Of India." What takes this place through the roof as well as the price is the heavenly Garlic Naan. It's just... so... good! It's the best Indian bread you'll get. And it comes free with your food. Make sure you specify that you want Garlic! Trust me on this, it's one of the best I've ever had. Did you know they are making a movie about Blue Aliens from Bengal? It's called "Avatar Of India." Everyone likes their Chicken Makhani, and if you don't like spicy food at all, I agree that is what you should get - it's probably the best Makhani I've had but then I don't like Makhani (pronounced Mak-nee)... but I recommend getting the Chicken Madras, which is not always part of the buffet. It's just my favourite dish. If you're ever in England at an Indian place, that is what you must order! Anyway, enjoy! And by the way, if you ever want to have your own little "arranged marriage" and you're parked with an Indian girl, just convince her to slide in the rear and you can recreate the alternate name of this place: "Back Seat Of My Car Of India". Neither mountain high snow nor freezing Arctic temperatures could stop me from having spicy Indian food today! With blistering cold weather outside, I rushed in Star of India for some take out. Oh man, as soon as I stepped inside the restaurant, I smelled the aromatic Indian spices and knew the food would be good! Chicken Kashmiri ($10.95). The boneless chicken breast pieces in piquant curry sauce was exactly what I needed to chase the winter blues away. The sauce was smooth, creamy and zesty. Kofta Curry ($9.95). This one is my favorite! Imagine an Indian version of hush puppies, round balls of spinach + cauliflower + potatoes and onion in spicy, savory yogurt sauce. Just put a generous amount of that puppy on top of plain basmati rice. Holy yummy cow! I appreciated that each takeout container was double wrapped with saran wrap to spill proof them. Thumbs up!
