Food was great, not really any complaints about the ambiance or taste of the food. Although service was lacking, they didn't explain how to order even though they knew it was the first time. Also we didn't receive any tongs for the raw meat. We had trouble grabbing the servers attention so we just waited and then asked for tongs, ladle, some water etc. Service is very important and keeps people coming. read more

It was a chilly night, which was perfect for some shabu shabu. I ordered the 8oz premium Black Angus ribeye choice ($26) with spicy miso ($1) and goma and ponzu sauce. The broth was flavorful and the sauces were on point. I recommend adding 1-2 hot drops if you want a little extra kick because even the spicy miso wasn't very spicy. I like that you have the option of getting udon or ramen because most shabu places only have udon. The ramen was delicious to eat with my remaining broth after I finished all the meat. The service was friendly and you can check in on Yelp for free edamame (just one check-in per group). The restaurant has only bar seating and is on the small side so be prepared to wait. Cute and small place for decent quality cuts of meat. I came with a group of 3 on a Monday afternoon and immediately sat down. Pretty much little to no wait to receive our soups and sauces and we shared our meats to try the different cuts. We ordered Wagyu Toro, Short Rib, and the Ribeye. All the cuts were decent quality, and I definitely recommend ordering more than 4oz of a cut because it's more worth. The server who helped us seemed to be the only girl working the front. She was super helpful and accommodating to us first-timers. The only thing I would've changed about the experience would be to have ordered more of the Short Rib. read more

Slice is an OK Shabu option if you're looking for Shabu and are in the Fullerton area. I personally would rather go to Mokkoji or Cal Shabu but its much further away in the opposite direction at the time. Slice is a bit over priced for what you're getting. They didn't have many options that were better priced so we went with the Combo to try out a couple proteins. We ordered the Prime Beef and Salmon combo. This was $27 and you get about 6-7 ounces of protein by looking at it. Its was roughly 5 pieces of beef and 5 pieces of salmon. The beef did not look to be as marbled as I'm used to for Prime Beef so it could have been choice. We ordered special broth which costs an additional couple of dollars. I would normally crush this portion easily but luckily Slice gives you refills on vegetables which we ordered several additional refills of. They do offer 1 refill of rice for free. When we went there was only 1 person working so things were a bit slow. It was mid afternoon around 2:45 pm so they may have already hit their lunch rush. The server was friendly and did make recommendations but overall this may be my first and last time here as there are many other Shabu places that are much better for the price. read more

Ive been here a few times when I've been in Fullerton and overall it has been ok not the best. The meat is ok but their vegetables are very lacking. Last night we were left with a very bad taste in our mouth the staff/waitress began to accuse us of not paying before. I was not even present before and my sis and bro in law did in fact pay and showed proof through bank statements and also even paid them tip every time as he frequented the location. They did not even have record on their end bcz THEIR MACHINE has some issue. She was so rude and invasive and made us feel so uncomfortable no one could shake this ill feeling off after leaving. Never have been treated this way by a restaurant and will never be returning. My honest opinion is D-pot and Miss Shabu is better as in ambiance, service, quality and food in the area. read more

I've passed by Slice many times while in DTF, and finally made the decision to go in. They also have a lunch special where you get a couple dollars off the regular price, which was exciting! Plus you get edamame if you check in on Yelp! I was a little disappointed though. They were very, very understaffed. The two employees that were there were sweet, but they kept apologizing to each customer and repeating "I'm so sorry about the wait" over and over again. It took a while to get the food, it was difficult to get their attention if you needed anything extra, like more broth, an extra bowl, or simply needed your heat turned lower. Hopefully this isn't the norm. The food was meh. I ordered the kombu broth, which is just hot water and you're given a bottle of soy sauce to "flavor" your broth yourself, and pork as my meat. Kombu is the free broth, so many if I had shelled out more money, one of the other broths would be more tasty, instead of just soy sauce water. I didn't love my experience here as much as I wanted to, so hopefully I'll be back, and I can give it another shot! read more

Those folks have never encountered the true shabu experience. If want that melt in your mouth shabu experience... go elsewhere. Think!!! Go look at the many shabu restaurants around us ... go to Little Tokyo, west La, downtown La, Rowland heights, San Gabriel Valley-- anywhere--- and see how it's done. Redesign your bar for comfort and practicality. (Instagram post worthy? Heck no) 2) Meats: Your angus prime ribeye tasted completely dry and not worth 33 bucks for 8 oz. Totally not! When I came here a couple years ago, I was disappointed with how much I paid and how little I got. However, as a newfound vegan I was pleasantly surprised with the things I was able to eat. I came in with a friend around 5 on a Monday and although it was raining it wasn't as busy as I was expecting, we were able to chose where to sit. I ordered the vegetarian broth and veggies which was 15 dollars total and my friend got the toro beef which ended up being around 20. For me, I really enjoyed what I ordered, it came with a ton of veggies, veggie dumplings, tofu, two sauces (the gomu sauce I think it's called was delicious) rice, and lots of garlic, green onion and chili oil. It was a lot. I also enjoyed the hot drop our waitress gave to our broth. My friend was also impressed with how much meat she ordered and said she would opt to get the 4 oz instead of the 6. I also overheard the waitress say that they used to charge based on sizes but now they charge based on ounces. It was a very fun interactive meal and you definitely are paying for the atmosphere and hot pot experience. After this experience I really view this place differently. My family decided to give this place a try on a Friday night after seeing it around for so long, and we were all craving shabu. the ambiance was quite nice when we arrived, but started to go downhill after that. The service was extremely slow (perhaps they are understaffed). But more importantly, the quality of the meat and veggies did not match up to the price they are charging. $3 extra for a flavored broth is excessive, considering they're already charging on average $30 per person for their combos. The meat itself was meh - we all got the premium ribeye - felt like it had been frozen for awhile and the pieces were not consistently sliced. My daughter was also ticked off about how stingy they were with the habanero oil she asked for. She asked for more, but the waitress barely gave her 3 droplets. Next, my wife asked for more ponzu sauce, but the waitress disappeared for about 5 minutes and by then the need for ponzu had already soured. I would recommend this place if you are into a trendy setting. But for quality and value you will need to look elsewhere. read more

The veggies here are given sparingly unlike other shabu places where they load up the veggie bowl with tons of lettuce. Here, you get a giant piece of lettuce, a couple of smaller pieces of lettuce, two carrot slices, a little bunch of enoki mushrooms, and some sort of green veggie leaf thing. A little disappointing, but whatevs. They do provide you with two types of noodles - udon + egg - which deviates from what I'm used to. For a regular order, you get 6 slices of angus beef. I thought the beef was a little too chewy for my taste. I made sure not to overcook it, but it was chewy nonetheless. The broth had good flavor. It got a little frothy toward the end, but it was good for what it was. The space is cool - you can't miss it. The restaurant sits on the corner of Wilshire and Harbor and the entire restaurant is encased with glass. Would I come back? Maybe, if only to try a higher grade of beef. read more

Came to this place this week with my friends. My friend had called prior to ask if we needed a reservation for a party of five and we were told we weren't and we would be able to walk in. Nowhere in that phone call was he told that for parties of 5 there would be an automatic 20% gratuity. Nowhere on the menu did it state that so you can imagine our surprise when the check came out and the gratuity had automatically been charged! Our server was NOT attentive to our party and she was overall rude as in one instance when she was placing the bento box down in front of my boyfriend she raised her voice at him and demanded he move his napkin. While he was removing it she was giving him the dirties look as well!! I can't even mention her name because she never introduced herself to our party. If you're a regular you will probably get good service but if you're just dropping by for a taste you will not get good service. We saw other parties receive significantly better service than us as well as revive much larger portions than we did. Lastly our server didn't even bring out our bill to us another server brought it out to us! Overall would not go again, there are better hot pot places to try!! read more

This is probably the only Shabu place that I would travel far for. Their sauces and meat are unlike other places. I like the selection of meats that they have and size portion option. I've tried the pork bone and the sukiyaki here and both broths are good. I've never had raw egg before with my shabu before slice but woah~ the egg compliments well as a dipping sauce for the meat. I like that everything comes in a box so you don't have to play Tetris trying to fit the plates on the table. Since covid and out door dining restrictions happened they have about 3-4 tables outside. I'm not a huge shabu fan, but this slice shabu location is within good distance from me and offers a daily lunch special for $12.98. Yes, including weekends, from 12-4. For me, the portion size is just right. It comes with vegetables, meat, noodles and rice. You can choose from 3 different soup broths, 5 proteins, 2 side sauces, rice that comes with 1 free refill, and noodles. I really like the Tom yum ponzu sauce, perfect for any meat choice and a nice tangy taste. The vegetables are basic and the typical ones you'd expect. If you're a noodles person, you're not gonna get a lot here. And to be honest, the soup broths are not at the top of their game. I wish there was more selection, I also just get the spicy miso and add 2 drops of hot oil and continue adding my onion and garlic for more flavor. Even without lunch prices, you might just enjoy yourself. Their portions and choices are of course better outside of the lunch menu but you're always paying for the protein. If you don't mind basic, content fill of shabu, then try coming for lunch. The glass windows make it a nice dining experience being able to look out into down town Fullerton and all the passerby's. Sakura Shabu-Shabu ~ Having recently moved to Fullerton, I'm officially on the look out for good restaurants. I do not know the area well, so I will be relying (even more) heavily on Yelp for the foreseeable future. I've come across this place a few times and decided to give it a try Sunday night for dinner. It was A-OK. This restaurant is basically one huge wrap-around bar. I do not believe that they have tables. Once seated, the first thing you'll notice is the individual stove tops at each seat. These are located inconveniently far from where you actually sit, making it somewhat hard to reach your food. It's a stretch. No problem, I got this. Maybe I've been spoiled lately in terms of Shabu, as I've been frequenting a lot of great spots, but nothing really stood out to me here. I ordered the large angus ribeye, priced at $20.50, with spicy miso as my soup base. This comes with white rice, and a bowl of extras including udon noodles, egg noodles, mushrooms, onion, spinach, and more. I decided to go with a $4 extra udon dish, which was substantial. Check in on Yelp for a free edamame! The food was pretty decent, but definitely not the best. I have to give this place a 3 to be fair, as I've given places like Jazz Cat, which I like a lot more, a 4. Prices here are on the pricier side, but you will most likely leave feeling pretty full. I was stuffed. Service was friendly, but refills on drinks were non-existent, which was a bummer because I was extremely dehydrated when I went. Really enjoyed this Shabu. Nice selection of meat and the way that they provide the veggies brought out for each person and refereshable is a great way to address COVID concerns. Service was prompt and pleasant. I also though that the way that they set up the hanging plexiglass partitions was quite well thought out in that they separated parties but were movable to easily accommodate parties of different sizes quickly. I like shabu shabu (Japanese hot pot) and I have not picked a favorite place yet. Sakura is definitely not on top of the list either. The decor is pretty cool in here though. I always drive by and look at everyone eating inside since their walls are replaced by huge windows. They have restrooms in the back of the restaurant. I like that they offer different portion sizes of meat. You can get regular or large size, but you also have to pay for a different broth. Chicken is $1 and beef is $2. Original (water and a piece of seaweed) is free. They have two sauces: sesame and ponzu. Their ponzu is so citrusy. I know some people like it that way but it was too acidic for me. Tip: add garlic in your ponzu sauce! I got the regular size premium angus beef, which was perfectly enough for me. Their veggie bowl includes udon and ramen noodles, so it's pretty filling. (They also give you a bowl of rice.) I like that they have tofu and squash. I think they could have added more cabbage or different types of mushroom. I got the beef broth, and it tastes exactly like pho broth. I think that's why it smelled so strongly when I stepped inside the restaurant. Service is good here. I think I would come back to try a different broth and maybe if they have different versions of the ponzu sauce. read more

My wife and I have been going to Slice since it opened and have never experienced less than perfect service. During the pandemic we ordered from slice and received our food in a timely manner. I loved that the packaging was very clearly done with care. Unfortunately, I found that one of the bases of the lettuce had not been cleaned prior to being sent to us. I bring this up only to highlight two things: we have been loyal customers for years and bring our kids with us to enjoy now and have not ever had an issue with quality, cleanliness, or taste. Now, I called in to let them know we had the issue with the veg and without hesitation I was met with great customer service and felt completely satisfied with their solution. My wife and I will always be proud customers of Slice Shabu and look forward to many years of continued success for the owners, chefs, and wait staff. Please know that there are customers (like us) who look to your restaurant with joy and find it to be a place to create memories with our family and friends and that is purely because of the level of service and standards you have set and exceed with each visit we have shared. Big windows, revealing their bar top and display of sake bottles located in downtown Fullerton surrounded by great scenery. I knew it would be something special and it was... Right off the bat seeing they had a Szechuan broth made me very excited for my meal. I ordered the wagyu short rib as my protein and got the ramen noodles and rice with it. I also ordered a Sapporo which came out looking icy and plump and tasted amazing. Then when the broth arrived we were given the choice of adding chili power and chili oil- both of which I said yes to (bc I love spice) and then she took out this tincture bottle and asked if we wanted spice shots ...!!!?? Best thing ever- I was so happy they took spice so seriously here. I got 3 drops of it in my broth and man it was just the perfect amount of spice to get my nose running and my senses high. The Szechuan flavor was working so well with all of the toppings and the wagyu was just melting in my mouth. Veggies were cut into the perfect size to cook quickly and effectively. The Sapporo, Szechuan, wagyu and spice shots were just dancing together in perfect harmony. Oh! Almost forgot about the dipping sauces. Shabu is my fave comfort food especially during the cold Fall/Winter season. I've been to the HB location and it was really good so we decided to try this spot. They are located on the corner of Wilshire/Harbor in downtown Fullerton. Parking is a limited since only street parking is available. We came in on a weekday at 8pm and it was not crowded. They greeted us as soon as we walked in the door and we were seated right away. There are low and high bar seating. No tables or booths here. Our server was friendly and attentive. The menu is strictly shabu. For first timers, you select your shabu shabu entree in 5 steps. 1~Broth: We chose a regular Miso and spicy Miso. I think the spicy version is more flavorful. 2~Meat: 6oz 1855 Black Angus Prime Ribeye 8oz Premium Black Angus Ribeye The 1855 Black Angus Ribeye is leaner and much more tender. It depends on your preference. 3~Sauce: Choice of two. We had ponzu and goma. Add some grated garlic and green onions. The ponzu was a bit too sour for me. The goma was pretty good with the veggies. 4~Rice: I chose the half-half. I'd stick to white rice since the brown rice is a bit dry. 5~Noodles: Ramen is the way to go. Top off the shabu meal with a hot bowl of ramen. Scoop some of the broth and top with sesame + hot sesame oil. Delish! I like Slice Shabu because they offer high quality meats. The downfall is that it's a bit pricey. The meal comes in a bento box which makes easier to maneuver. Veggies include: sliced onions, Napa cabbage, baby spinach, enokitake mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, and tofu. You get a free refill of spinach and cabbage. Check in for a comp order of edamame. Sakura replaced our old favorite Mitsu E and has been thriving. We sometimes had Mitsu E to ourselves but now a wait is more the norm. Sakura has a more contemporary décor and the service is 10x better. The servers are friendly, professional, and always around. You never have to ask for anything twice. The upgrade came with a price though. The new menu easily adds $20 - $30 to the tab for our family of 4, even for base level quality beef. As a result, we don't come nearly as often as before. The menu is much expanded. There is a good selection of appetizers - tempura is delicious. The meat selection includes 4 of 5 grades of beef, lamb, chicken, salmon and vegetarian. Quality and quantity are good. You won't walk away hungry. The standard broth is kombu. Other broths are available for a few bucks extra. Fullerton is blessed or cursed with seemingly endless poke joints but only 1 shabu-shabu restaurant. As our only option, Sakura is a fine option. But I do wish there is a more economical option. read more

Broths are flavorful and they USED to have a killer lunch special which they recently discontinued which hurts a little because the prices are a bit on the high end, especially grabbing lunch during the work week. My friends and I came in on Thursday night for dinner to try it out as we've never been there before and saw that reviews were good. We were disappointed by the experience as we received poor service overall. Our server was not friendly (our server was an Asian lady) , not attentive to our stoves (servers control the stoves here), and our portions were disproportionate compared to other parties. Additionally, other parties received ladles and tongs, which were absent for us. A different server had to give us our check because our initial server was nowhere to be found. Another issue I have because of the lack of service was the automatic 20% gratuity. We were a party of 5 and there were no signs indicating an automatic gratuity according to party size. Lastly, pricing is way too high for the experience not being AYCE and lack of ACCEPTABLE service. The good reviews are likely left by regulars. Don't be fooled! DO NOT GO HERE! Keeping up with the latest COVID regulations. Outside seating: a couple of two top tables and a couple of four top tables. Due to the shabu tables needing power outlets the tables are limited to the space right in front of the restaurant. They made use of as much space as they could and I commend them for it. The tables have shade thank goodness so no roasting underneath the sun. This is how the ordering usually goes down: 1855 ribeye - moist, fatty, and tender. This my gf and my favorite ribeye to get here. There are a couple of other ribeye options and we've tried them all, but this one is the winner in our book. Beef belly - thinly sliced, fatty strips of beef belly always leaves me satisfied. Spicy miso broth gives the broth a lot of flavor and a little kick of spiciness ($1 up charge but worth it) Tom Yum Ponzu add a little Thai flavoring Goma sauce Udon noodles Hot drops because I like it spicy! There's even hotter hot drops but I like the regular one better because I taste a little more burnt roasted taste in the hotter drops. Depending on my Ketoness I skip the rice or get the white rice. If it's Sunday, why not add the bottomless mimosas (currently $9/person). I don't like the mimosas pre-mixed as I like controlling the champagne to orange juice ratio but if we're in the mood this is a good adult beverage :) Slice is has great food quality and the shabu and making the soup at the end leaves us totally satisfied.
