Of all the locations, this might be the best! The food has always been superior, but the servers here really get things right the first time. They're all so friendly, and there's no wait like at the Irvine or Costa Mesa locations. What I got: Today I had the regular 10-piece toro with miso broth. Everything was prepared well, and they don't skimp on the meat. Perfect portion for lunch. I highly recommend this location to fellow Mokkoji lovers. read more

Came back on a Friday night and ordered our usual Flat Iron "Mokkoji Cut," one on Sukiyaki and the other on Spicy Pork broth. I wish they would go back to serving the thinner cuts of meat like before, as I noticed the fat a bit more on my portion today. A few hiccups during this visit, which is why I'm giving 4 stars. We had to ask for our rice to be served, and my veggie platter was missing mushrooms, so I had to request those separately. We also had to follow up on our edamame when it still hadn't arrived halfway through our meal, only to find out they were out of stock. We opted for the shishito peppers instead, but those were also unavailable, so we eventually settled for the cucumber with chili oil which I am not a big fan of because it almost tastes like pickles tossed in a very rich tasting chili oil dressing. When we were ready to check out, it was almost closing time, and all the servers were gathered in the kitchen. Our card was waiting to be swiped, along with the card for the party seated next to us, but no one came over to assist us for some time. We still enjoy coming here, but I hope they can be a bit more attentive with serving orders and communicating when items are unavailable. read more

Like the other locations in Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, Irvine, etc. the food is good. Orange, however, has pretty awful service. The food came out promptly which was great but too bad I had no utensils to eat it with. I had asked for a set of chopsticks twice and each server said okay and then disappeared. After another ten minutes of just watching my broth bubble, I finally got up and walked to a different table and grabbed a pair of chopsticks on my own. Nobody ever came back to give me the ones I had asked for earlier. Ordered sukiyaki and the server asked if I wanted the usual egg that comes with it. That's the best part of sukiyaki so of course I said yes. Again, after much waiting, I flagged down two different people to ask for that egg and hot drops. There were a total of three servers that I saw "working" and three tables dining in. Saw some reviews prior to my visit saying something about how everyone's just in the back hanging out. I guess I get it now. I'd be pretty forgiving if it were closer to closing time and I was a part of those annoying parties that came in during the last half hour of the closing shift...but it wasn't even 6pm yet. Of course they brought the check out pretty quickly once they noticed we were done eating though. read more

This location is in a really busy shopping center so don't be surprised if you're hunting for parking for a hot minute. Despite the parking situation this Mokkoji location is small but well spaced out, We were seated in the center most area and still had ample space and the environment was inviting and very clean! The service was polite and very quick. They were busy and that didn't not keep them from bringing out food out in a timely manner. The food was fresh and delicious I really enjoyed my torro and the miso base soup, I also like the variety of additional sauce they provide without having to ask for them. Would definitely come here again. Only note I have is I wish they would have offered us the ice cream they had as a dessert option, i didn't even realize they had it till i saw others grab it! I'm sure it was probably on the menu but they took those promptly after we ordered. So would have been nice to have been told but just a note read more

Our go-to hot pot spot! This place is consistent. Quality, service, you name it. I always order spicy miso broth and my mans orders spicy pork bone broth. We usually add 1 drop or 2 of hot drops into our pot and sauce. I love me some fatty meat, so the toro fatty beef belly's my #1 choice. Staff is attentive, receptive, and can always call them over. Something about their goma and ponzu sauce... it's stupid good and addicting. read more

Mokkoji is one of my favorite places for a high quality shabu shabu meal. I always go for the Mokkoji cut and it never disappoints. The meat is perfectly marinated, has good amount of meat to fat ratio. If you're coming with a partner or friend, the 32 pieces is plenty for two people. You will be full! The dipping sauces and sides are a great addition to eat with your meat as well as dip. The garlic and sesame sauces are addictive, I find myself dunking it in both sauces because it complements the beef and veggies so well. When it comes to finishes with noodles, I highly recommend getting the ramyeon. In my opinion, it's so much better than udon. Besides the food, waiter here are friendly and the ambiance is clean and modern. Check this place out if you're in the mood for quality shabu shabu! read more

Mokkoji is a great go-to for shabu shabu. Ordered the toro with spicy pork broth and everything hit. The toro presentation was beautiful, and the spicy pork broth was really flavorful with just the right amount of kick. Meats are good quality you can tell by the marbling of the meat. Lots of options for broths and proteins (seafood and meat). Decent service and casual ambiance. definitely want to come back here soon! read more

Coming here was super confusing. First timer, here! Alrighty, we came party of 3, we could either get ourselves our own meat size portions: R, L, XL, SH (share?).; or do what we did, get the beef sampler which was a few pieces of all the meat. That ended up being more than enough for the three of us. Seeing as we all got our own vegetable and udon portion in addition to rice. I really liked the spicy pork broth, though it's not really seasoned. I've been told the flavors come as you cook with the meats, so make sure you get the meat with the marinade. It was kind of pricey and you are charged an additional $ for sharing the beef sampler, but for what we wanted, it was worth it. Anyways, I was confused, but now I've eaten there, I understand the process of ordering; I think. I'd probably go again if I have someone from out of town or like a special night out. Not casual because it's quite pricey. read more

Yummy shabu bar with lots of bar type seating as well as few tables for parties of 3-4. It's quite small inside and very casual (maybe not the best for huge parties). The quality of meat is great, very tender and seasoned well. There's also healthier options including salmon/scallops/shrimp/veggies. Service was ok, there weren't many people when we came Friday evening only a couple of tables but they seemed really busy and took a bit of time to get seated. After some time, they came back to take our order but realized they forgot to give us menus. Also said something like "just remind me if I forget ur veggies" which i didn't mind much but was just a little surprised with how little customers there were. She came a bit later as she forgot which veggies we added. Our server wasn't very welcoming or nice and rarely smiled. I understand that people have bad days so didn't mind it too much. There's a lot of mokkojis around and I had better experiences at the other ones but overall the food was still really delicious and maybe it was just an off-visit! read more

I dine here when I'm in the mood for some quick hot pot. I usually go for an AYCE but was too lazy to go too far last night. I always get Toro fat belly, regular, 10 pieces, which is plenty for me as the pieces are huge. I know the price went up from $20 to $24 now. :( The food is great here. I just wish they did not charge extra for different broth flavors. I ended up getting original because there's no extra charge for that one. I just added garlic, green onions, and chili oil to flavor it up. It would be really great if they add a Szechuan broth flavor in the future because that is my go to hot pot choice. Otherwise, I think their broth flavors are too simple. read more

A great spot for hot pot if you're in the area. Mokkoji offers a range of meat, with each being such high quality. I ended up getting the Toro Fatty Belly and it was thinly sliced and cooked excellently. I appreciated how easily you can adjust your heat level on the stove becaused my broth always evaporates. I got the Spicy Miso broth which overall wasn't too spicy but it definitely made my nose run a bit. I enjoyed the udon noodles they provided and our server was pretty on top of things. Great place. read more

My wife dragged me here and I wasn't sure what to expect. I have about five restaurants I like to frequent and anything else always feels like I'm in a third world. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Definitely take their recommendations, they know what's good. We went Friday night and our reservation was for 630. We walked right in and got a table. No waiting although the place was pretty much packed. Shows how well organized they are. The beef was pink/red and fresh looking. Just the way you would want uncooked beef to look. The staff was great to give instructions and quick with refills. We will definitely be back. I would recommend the two item combo get the flat steak and the shrimp. read more

This restaurant is serves great food. The meat for the shabu shabu is great quality and can be prepared plain or with garlic soy seasoning. I personally like to get plain broth and seasoned meat. Once the veggies and meat are cooked in the broth, it becomes so flavorful. The meal comes with two types of dipping sauces. My favorite is the creamy sesame sauce. The service here is friendly and helpful. The restaurant is clean and has a quaint vibe. Get here early to avoid waiting during busy hours. read more

Came here for lunch with my coworkers. The guys working today were so helpful and patient. We were a group of 7, including 4 people who never ate this before and several with dietary restrictions. They sat us at both sides of the bar so we would be able to face each other and they were so patient explaining how shabu shabu works and what everything is made of. The lunch special was a really good deal at around $22 for 10 pieces (plus soup base charges). I like the meat seasoned with garlic, green onions, and sesame oil. My cousins brought me here to celebrate my 25th birthday. I love shabu, and I have yet to try this spot out. Parking: They're located in a medium sized plaza, and there's plenty of free parking. Ambiance/Environment: It's very clean inside. There's a decent amount of seating. We visited on a Thursday night, so it wasn't too busy. Service: Our server was efficient. We didn't catch her name, but she was knowledgable about the menu when we asked questions. Throughput was under 15 min after ordering. After receiving our orders, our server checked on us a couple times. Soup & meats: My bf and I ordered the 'specials for 2' and went with the shared brisket set. The soup was decent; wasn't too salty. My favorite part were the briskets. It came with a generous amount of briskets. The toppings were also fresh. This special included beers and desserts. read more

I discovered Mokkoji Shabu Shabu through a social media recommendation, and I'm so glad I did! The food is absolutely delicious, and I love the personal, customizable dining experience. My husband and I tried the spicy pork broth and ordered the 32-piece share portion of the toro fatty belly, which was melt-in-your-mouth tender. You have the option to receive your meat marinated or as is. We opted to have it marinated. It came dressed with garlic and scallions. Each set comes with two sauces: one is a creamy, sesame-based sauce, and the other tastes similar to ponzu, though I couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was. The sets also include rice, udon, and a vibrant veggie platter with bok choy, enoki mushrooms, broccoli, Napa cabbage, kale, and a slice of kabocha squash. The broth was incredible--each vegetable added sweetness and depth, making it even more flavorful as the meal progressed. Even my husband, who isn't a big fan of vegetables, was happily enjoying the veggie-packed meal. We also ordered the assorted pickled vegetables, which I highly recommend. The variety included pickled jalapeños, cucumbers, radish, and kimchi, all of which added a refreshing acidity that perfectly balanced the richness of the fatty beef. Beyond the food, the service was attentive and friendly. The ambiance is cozy and a modern. Great for a date night or casual outing. We left feeling completely satisfied! I'm looking forward to sharing this place with friends and family who are visiting. read more

OK, I don't really like hot pot, but this place is an exception Their food is solid, and that's not deception make sure you get their marinated meat because that's the best I love this place over all the hot pot rest. They're super clean and the wait staff are super nice But mind you, it's kinda cold in there, kinda like ice (not that bad, just needed to rhyme ;) I really like this place. They have a long bar in the middle, with some tables that seat four on the left side. They have size portions that are S, M, and L, but there's also a "SH" which means sharing. When asking for the meat, they'll ask if you want marinated, which you should say "YES" because it's delicious. If you like spicy, they'll come around asking if you'd like some drops. Apparently these drops are super powerful. My wife does two drops in her sauce, and 3-5 drops in her soup. But mind you, it's really spicy. read more

This is still by far my favorite location. While all the branches are great, this one really stands out because the meat has always been perfectly prepared--never frozen and stuck together like I've occasionally experienced elsewhere, which can make shabu shabu a bit tricky. I always order the toro belly with the spicy pork bone broth, and it never disappoints. I usually visit on weekday afternoons when it's quiet, so I'm seated immediately and the service is excellent. I enjoy the ambiance at the high counter seating, but if that's not your preference, there are also a few tables available, which are especially convenient for families with kids. read more

I'm generally very meh when it comes to shabu, but I can def say Mokkoji is my FAVORITE place for shabu now!! It's so good I'm still thinking about it a week later. I hateee waiting, but there was no wait on a Friday night at this location. Our party got seated v quickly. Minor caveat to everything is that you have to pay for your broth selection, which I haven't seen at many places other than Haidilao. I got spicy pork broth and it was v good tho. I got flat iron cut and everyone else got toro. The meat quality is SOOO good. That's what sets this place apart from other shabu restaurants. And you have the option for your meats to come marinated, too. We each got a large meat selection and it was a decent amount of meat. Not sure about rice, but veggies were refillable. I'm def looking forward to my next socal trip so I can come back :) read more

I came here on a Sunday evening and it wasn't packed at all. Maybe 2 other tables besides up. I usually go to the Garden Grove location but this location was on the way. We got the dinner for 2 with the beef sampler. I got the spicy pork bone broth and my friend got the fire crab. Both broths were flavorful. The meat and veggies were nicely displayed and the servers came around often to check up on us. The restaurant was clean and I liked the chic decor. Towards the end of the night, however, the servers were nonexistent. When we asked for more broth, the server said they have already closed the kitchen without any notice. They gave us the check and we never heard from them again. We even had to go to the back kitchen to ask for take out containers for our leftovers. And they never gave us the dessert that is part of the dinner set. Since the service was so bad, we didn't even notice until we've left. I love mokkoji but I wouldn't recommend this location. read more

Mokkoji is a Shabu Shabu that stands the test of time for me. I have been coming back for years and years and I am shocked at how good it is every time I come back. Though this place is not Ayce and only offers two dipping sauces (goma - sesame sauce and ponzu), the meat quality is stellar and you can always ask for more veggies! Also you can choose to make porridge at the end of your meal. Normally, I order the large size of the beef belly marinated and it fills me up completely. My boyfriend and I went last weekend and the service was abysmal. We walked in and there was only one other table that had guests yet the front desk girl was too busy gossiping and chatting with the girl who was obviously her friend to even notice us. We stood there for a good 4-5 mins waiting for her to acknowledge us at all. And when she finally did she gave us an attitude. When it came time for our order she still had the stank azz attitude for no reason. Would also like to note that the center bar and table to our right sat dirty for about 15-20 mins before she even bothered to clean it. Not sure why you're working in hospitality/food service when you can't even greet the people coming in to your establishment. The food was mid, we both got the miso broth and it was flavorless. Definitely wouldn't come back due to service and food. read more

We've been eyeing this spot since living in irvine and one day in orange we saw there was a location here and decided to check it out. I normally get the sukiyaki and usually its sweet and salty but i felt like here it tasted almost tasted like bitter. My husband got the spicy miso and it was okay for him too. I do say their meat quality is really good. The one with garlic and green onion dunked in your broth and sauce delicious! I thought after cooking the meat and veggies the broth would taste better but it honestly didnt. Wife and I have been to the Irvine and Garden Grove locations and this was our second time at the Orange one. They ALL provide a consistent experience and of course exceptional food as well! I stopped in last night for dinner since it's been awhile. We ordered their usual toro fatty belly, which as a beef belly enjoyer, is by far THE BEST slice of meat they offer. However, my wife and I never noticed they offered a shareable portion which is ENORMOUS. Literally maybe half way through our meal it looked like we didn't even put a dent in it. I wasn't shy about digging in either! Service was excellent too! One of the girls said the most hot drops they've seen was 15, so naturally I asked for 16. But then at the end of our meal, it turns out someone else has done 20!!! I'll be back to do 21. And for those curious, 16 was tolerable, like the perfect amount of hurt. I think 21 would push me into uncomfortable territory, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. Plus, I get to eat more beef belly. WORTH IT read more
